GARDENING TIPS FEBRUARY 2015

MAINTAINING YOUR LAWN If the weather is warm, you may need to start mow. Set the cutting height at its maximum, and only mow when the grass is dry.

MOLE CONTROL

CONTINUE TO LOOK OUT FOR MOLES. THEIR ACTIVITY INCREASES IN FEBRUARY, AS THIS IS THE MATING AND NEST (FORTRESS) BUILDING SEASON. TIP: Remove the largest hills and re-firm the ground before overseeding with grass seed in spring.

Re-cut lawn edges to crisp up the appearance of the garden and save work later in the season. Turf can be laid, provided the soil is not too wet or frosty. Work from planks, to avoid compacting the soil. Do not walk on the newly laid turf and leave undisturbed for several weeks to allow new roots to establish. Prepare seed beds for new lawns to be seeded later in the spring, but only attempt this if the ground is not too wet.

MOLES LEAD SOLITARY LIVE EACH ONE IN S, OWN SYSTEM IT’S O TUNNELS F

TROUBLESHOOTING Keep brushing away worm casts, as they can be troublesome at this time of year. Fusarium patch, or snow mould, and algae may continue to be a problem.

POND ADVICE HABITAT A well-designed and maintained pond is a haven for all sorts of plants, birds and animals. It is a complex habitat full of algae and plants, scavengers, predators, herbivores, decomposers and parasites. Some species spend their whole life in the pond, for instance water snails and small crustaceans, while others use it for only part of their life cycle, such as pond skaters. All ponds, no matter how small and shallow, are a danger to young children; remember to consider their safety.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR GARDEN Make your pond as big as possible – this is better for wildlife as there will be more habitats. Put it somewhere sunny, away from trees. Ensure some edges are shallow and sloping to allow animals easy access. Stock your pond with native plants from other garden ponds or garden centres. Never take plants from the wild. Insects, amphibians and invertebrates will find your pond surprisingly quickly on their own.

HEALTH AND FITNESS

THE HOLIDAY AFTERMATH

So the holidays have come and gone, and perhaps you’re left to deal with the aftermath of all that less-than-healthy eating… Is your body is puffy and bloated? Are your joints are achy? Do your clothes feel tight. Maybe you are feeling this way right now. Below I’ve outlined the 5 steps you’ll need to quickly and seamlessly get back on the fitness fast track.

STEP ONE: GET FOCUSED. The holidays happened. You ate things from your “never eat these” list, you drank more that you should have, but now it’s over and we have the spring and summer to look forward to. Draw a line in the sand. The bad eating stops now. Don’t beat yourself up for falling off the fitness wagon this once. Simply get back up, dust yourself off and get re-focused.

STEP TWO: GET HYDRATED. While bad eating can take on many forms, the end result is most often dehydration and water retention. The only way to restore balance is to get hydrated. Your first priority in getting back on track is to drink plenty of water throughout your day. Start with a tall glass of water in the morning, and carry a water bottle with you. Don’t add artificial sweeteners or stimulants to your water – these will work against your

hydration efforts. To add flavour, slice fresh fruit, herbs or vegetables to place in your water, just like at the spa.

STEP THREE: GET PICKY.

For the next few days I need you to be extra picky about what you eat. Stick with only whole, real foods like fruits, vegetables and some lean meat. Whole, real foods will quickly help to restore balance. Don’t eat packaged foods for the next few days. This means saying no to snack foods, processed meat slices, dairy, baked goods and alcohol.

STEP FOUR: GET JUICING.

Making your own juice can be beneficial when recovering from a weekend of bad eating. The key is to use ingredients that will hydrate and nourish your body and to avoid ingredients that are high in sugar. These ingredients are fantastic for your recovery juice: fresh ginger, spinach, cucumber, kale, green apple, lemon, and celery. These ingredients should be used sparingly, due to high sugar content: carrots, oranges, red apples, melons or pineapple.

STEP FIVE: GET MOVING.

So you’ve put an end to the eating madness, you’ve hydrated, you’ve eaten only whole foods and you’ve enjoyed a recovery juice…it’s now time to sweat it out. Lace up your athletic shoes and put on your favourite gym clothes. When you start your workout, ease in slowly. Take the time to warm up and stretch your muscles before powering up to a solid 30-minute exercise routine. If you would like information on the classes that I run please get in touch.
