A closer look: House mouse This tiny rodent has greyish fur, large ears, a pointed snout and a long, scaly tail. Apart from humans, it is probably the commonest mammal in the UK. It is a nocturnal creature and is often considered a pest, as it spoils food and carries disease. Mice are quite aggressive towards each other and fights are frequent. They construct a system of tunnels to live in, which may be quite simple or more complex with several chambers and exits. Females are able to produce up to 10 litters in a year, each with between four to eight young. Within three weeks of birth, the young mice are independent.

IN THE GARDEN

Hunger strikes

Gardens can prove a real life-saver for birds at this time of year, especially when it is frosty or snowy. Birds become bolder, venturing into gardens in search of scattered scraps and well-stocked feeders and bird tables. Fallen apples can still be a good food source, which you can supplement with sliced fruit from the kitchen. You may be lucky enough to see more unusual visitors, such as fieldfares and redwings looking for berries and fruit in cold winter weather. If you walk through woodland at this time of year you might hear a woodpecker hammering on dead wood, hunting out insect larvae in the bark. If you see a flash of red it’s likely to be a great spotted woodpecker. These attractive birds may venture into larger urban gardens, especially if you

What does it eat? Grain, seeds, roots, fungi and insects. Inside the house they seem to eat almost anything! Where will I see it? Around log piles, outbuildings, patio pots; sometimes in the house. Also on farmland.

leave dead wood or provide a peanut feeder. Even if you don’t venture out into the garden, now is a good time to plan for the coming year. You could think about a new wildlife feature for the garden, such as a mini-woodland, or mixed border. As winter reveals the bare bones of your garden, it gives you the opportunity to examine its structure and layout. If a shrub looks out of place, now might be the time to move it (as long as the ground isn’t too wet or frozen). However, if you can, take care not to disturb creatures hibernating in the corner of a shed, or under vegetation. Leaves, dried stems and the seed heads of flowers provide shelter for over-wintering lacewings, ladybirds and other insects.

This month’s jobs Trim hedges if they are too straggly, only once the birds have eaten the berries. Prune apple trees. Check outdoor plants in pots, even in cold weather, to ensure compost is moist. Build nest boxes. Check birdbaths and ponds, and remove ice in cold weather. Put out fresh water for birds.

RECIPE

Call us: 0191 4871834 Recipes by Kirsty Hale, Riverford Cook and www.riverford.co.uk/recipes

Clementine Curd & Cinnamon Mess INGREDIENTS 3-4 clementines (use firm ones) 1 tbsp lemon juice 200g caster sugar 120g unsalted butter, diced 2 large eggs, beaten for the meringue: 2 egg whites 75g caster sugar 50g dark brown muscovado sugar 1 tsp ground cinnamon 400ml double cream 6 clementines

This will make more curd than you need; keep the rest in the fridge (for a week) and spread on toast or muffins Serves: 6 Zest the clementines to get 3 tbsp zest. Juice them to get 5 tbsp juice. Put the zest and juice in a heatproof bowl with the lemon

juice, sugar and butter. Place over a pan of simmering water (don’t let the water touch the bowl) and whisk until the butter has melted and the sugar crystals have dissolved. Add the eggs and whisk while heating, until the mixture thickens and coats the back of a wooden spoon. This may take a while. Don’t overheat or it will curdle. Remove the bowl from the heat and leave to cool, then chill in an airtight container until needed. To make the meringue, whisk the egg whites to stiff peaks. Add 2 tbsp sugar with the cinnamon and whisk. Gradually add the remaining sugar, whisking until stiff and glossy. Line a tray with baking parchment. Use a pallet knife to spread over the meringue to 2-3cm thick. Bake at 110°C for 2-2½ hours, depending on your oven. Turn it off, open the door slightly and let the meringue cool slowly in the oven. Transfer to an airtight container until needed. Whisk the cream to soft peaks. Chop the clementines into small pieces. Break the meringue into small pieces and mix in a bowl with the cream and clementines. Swirl through a few spoonfuls of the curd.

LOCAL CULTURE

The Angel of the North The Angel of the North is a contemporary sculpture, designed by Sir Antony Gormley. Completed in 1998, it is a steel sculpture of an angel, 20 metres (66 ft) tall, with wings measuring 54 metres (177 ft) across. The wings do not stand straight sideways, but are angled 3.5 degrees forward; Gormley did this to create “a sense of embrace”. It stands on a hill on the southern edge of Low Fell, overlooking the A1 and A167 roads into Tyneside, and the East Coast Main Line rail route, south of the site of Team Colliery.

THE ANGEL IS AS TALL AS 4 DOUBLE DECKER BUSES

Work began on the project in 1994 and cost £800,000. Most of the project funding was provided by the National Lottery. The Angel was finished on 16 February 1998. Due to its exposed location, the sculpture was built to withstand winds of over 100 mph (160 km/h). Thus, foundations containing 600 tonnes of concrete anchor the sculpture to rock 70 feet (21 m) below. The sculpture was built in three parts at Hartlepool Steel Fabrications Ltd. It took five hours for the body to be transported from its construction site in Hartlepool, up the A19 road to the site. The Angel aroused some controversy in British newspapers. However, it has since been considered to be a landmark for North East England and has been listed by one organisation as an “Icon of England”. It has often been used in film and television to represent Tyneside, as are other local landmarks such as the Tyne Bridge and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

DID YOU KNOW: According to Gormley, the significance of an angel was three-fold: first, to signify that beneath the site of its construction, coal miners worked for two centuries; second, to grasp the transition from an industrial to information age, and third, to serve as a focus for our evolving hopes and fears.
