Make a Bird bath
IN THE GARDEN
A busy month ahead Feeding, watering and supporting your fruit and veg is vital in June. Runner beans need well-prepared ground and suitable supports, like bamboo canes, to grow up. Water and feed plants and fruit regularly once they are established. If you’ve gaps in the flower border there’s still time to fill them with quick-growing annuals grown from seed. You can also buy flowers in pots from garden centres, but they will need to be watered in well and kept moist once planted.
It is less work in the long run to opt for perennials that will flower year after year, or wild flowers. Foxgloves are one of our most spectacular native wild flowers; red campion is a similar shade and makes an ideal companion, while ragged robin is an even deeper pink with delicately cut petals that will brighten up damper corners.
Many people put food out for birds, but fewer provide a regular supply of clean water. Birds need water for drinking and bathing. Water is particularly important during the summer when water can be hard to find. There are many ways of providing water in the garden, but the simplest way is a bird bath. This is essentially a dish of water the aesthetic aspects are there to please us, not the birds! A good bird bath has a simple, sturdy construction, but is light enough to make it easy to clean and refill. It needs to have shallow sloping sides with a shallow approach to water. To allow different species to bathe, provide a sloping bath, so the water is between 2.5 cm and 10 cm (1-4 inches) deep. Make sure the surface of the bath is rough so birds can grip it with their claws, and not slip. The vigorous bathing of a flock of starlings can use up a lot of water, so make sure your bird bath is big enough! The simplest bird bath is a plant saucer with textured finish and a stone in the middle You could set several of these around your garden.
This month’s jobs Trim box or privet if it is growing rapidly, but first check there are no nesting birds. Prune spring flowering shrubs such as lilac, spiraea, forsythia and broom as soon as they have finished flowering. Give spring flowering meadows their first cut at the end of this month. Spread a mulch of compost or
shredded bark around trees, shrubs and roses when the soil is moist. Plant up containers and hanging baskets with annuals. If you have been growing plants from seed inside the greenhouse, take them outside to acclimatise before planting. Sow vegetable crops, such as a lettuce mix, or courgettes directly into the soil, and try some in large pots.

SPORTS GUIDE: JUNE 2016
ENGLAND V RUSSIA, STADE VELODROME SATURDAY 11 JUNE, 8PM
©Gilles Paire
England open Group B with Russia challenge The last time England met Russia they suffered what proved a costly defeat - they will want no repeat when the teams open their UEFA EURO 2016 campaigns in Marseille. England have some unwelcome UEFA European Championship memories of Russia to overcome as they start their 2016 campaign in Marseille. Russia got the better of England in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2008, finishing second in the group behind Croatia, who won 3-2 at Wembley in their final
qualifier to eliminate Steve McClaren’s team. England have not lost over 90 or 120 minutes in 22 EURO fixtures, going back to that 3-2 defeat by Croatia in November 2007 – since then, their record is W17 D5, although they were beaten on penalties by Italy in the UEFA EURO 2012 quarter-finals. www.uefa.com

Crushed Broad Bean Bruschetta
This makes a great sharing plate for a party or barbecue and the recipe can easily be scaled up to serve more. To get ahead, boil and mash the beans and keep in the fridge, toast the bread just before your guests arrive then mix the cheese, mint, chilli and oil with the beans just before serving. Serves: 4 as a starter
INGREDIENTS 600g young broad beans in their pods 1 lemon 4 tbsp olive oil, plus a little more for drizzling 2 tbsp grated Parmesan or vegetarian equivalent, plus more to serve 2 tbsp finely chopped mint leaves Pinch of dried chilli flakes Thin slices of sourdough or ciabatta 1 garlic clove
Boil the beans in salted water for 3 minutes until tender, double-pod, then mash roughly with a fork. Finely zest the lemon, then squeeze the juice of one half into the beans. Stir in the olive oil, lemon zest, Parmesan, mint and chilli. Season with salt and pepper to taste (you may want a little more lemon juice too). Toast, grill or griddle the bread, then rub with a cut clove of garlic. Drizzle with some olive oil, then pile on the broad bean mixture and grate over a little more Parmesan to serve.
TRY OUR FRESH RECIPE BOXES. All the ingredients for 3 tasty meals for 2 or 4 people in one box, delivered to your door. www.riverford.co.uk 14

WHAT’S ON: JUNE 2016
Buddy Holly - A Legend Reborn
Celebrating Buddy’s 80th Birthday Celebrating the 80 years since the birth of a true rock’n’roll legend, Buddy Holly - a Legend Reborn is coming to town starring the UK’s number one Buddy Holly. Marc Robinson, a winner from ITV’s legendary Stars in Their Eyes show, headlines the spectacular live production, bringing to life classic hits such as Peggy Sue, That’ll be the Day and Oh Boy. Backed by a band reminiscent of the Crickets in their Fifties heyday, Buddy Holly - A Legend Reborn is an authentic slice of rock ’n’ roll nostalgia that ensures Buddy’s incredible legacy of unforgettable hit songs lives on. Show producer Michael Taylor says Buddy Holly - A Legend Reborn features Marc Robinson,
clutching a Fender Stratocaster, sporting a pair of heavy-rimmed glasses and sounding exactly like Buddy in his heyday. Had Buddy not been taken from the world at such a young age, he would be celebrating his 80th birthday this year. Buddy Holly - a Legend Reborn takes an all-new show on the road to commemorate. Boasting a repertoire of more than 30 of Buddy’s greatest hits, Buddy Holly - a Legend Reborn includes some hidden gems as the show takes music fans back to the legendary performer’s big break. Sunday 19th June 2016, 7.30pm, Sage Gateshead, St Mary’s Square, Gateshead Quays, Gateshead NE8 2JR. Tickets: £26 Box Office: 0191 443 4661 www.sagegateshead.com www.easytheatres.com
