3. Use large logs for climbing plants. Why not use your best pieces of wood and stand them in your flower border? The more places you have dead wood, the greater the variety of bugs and minibeasts you’ll attract to your garden.
4. How to arrange your wood.
IN THE GARDEN
Bring your garden to life with dead wood
Use old, dead logs to create an inviting home and feeding ground for insects, toads and newts. You won’t see much going on at first, as these creatures like to hide in the dark. If you turn one of the logs over in the day, you can watch plenty of creepy-crawlies scurrying away out of the light. At night, look for woodlice, snails and wood mice emerging from shady woodpiles. You can build a log pile whenever the mood takes you. But you’re likely to have logs and sticks to hand in autumn and winter when you’re managing your trees.
1. Collect your dead wood.
It’s best to get your dead wood from your own garden each time you do any pruning or lopping.
You can also see if friends and neighbours have any going spare. If you get really stuck, you can buy dead wood from a local tree surgeon. But don’t just wander into a local wood and help yourself!
2. Where to put it? You can put it just about anywhere in your garden, but it will attract different wildlife in different places. If you put it somewhere shady, it’s likely to rot more quickly. Fungi are likely to arrive and mosses may grow. Put the wood in the sun, however, and the wood will turn dry and hard.
Information and guidance provided by www.rhs.org.uk and www.rspb.org.uk
6
You can just pile the wood up, higgledy-piggledy, for that rustic look. Or stack it neat and tidily – nature won’t mind. Some creatures like dead wood that is buried. So you can dig a hole and start your pile underground, so that it’s like an iceberg with some hidden below the surface. Get creative – there are endless possibilities for your designs. Sprinkle with earth or brash. You can use the soil you excavated on the top or place small twigs to give reptiles somewhere to hide – they like the intricate maze this creates. And some birds, like dunnocks and wrens, will nest in the tangle.
This month’s jobs Clear up fallen leaves especially from lawns, ponds and beds. Raise containers onto pot feet to prevent waterlogging. Plant tulip bulbs for a spring display next year. Plant out winter bedding. Insulate outdoor containers from frost - bubblewrap works well. Stop winter moth damage to fruit trees using grease bands around the trunks. Put out bird food to encourage winter birds into the garden.

THE SEASON GRINDS TO A HALT SPORTS GUIDE: NOVEMBER 2015
The 2015 Forumla 1 Schedule concludes on 29th November at The Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. The Yas Marina Circuit is the venue for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The circuit was designed by Hermann Tilke, and is situated on Yas Island, about 30 minutes from the capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi.
Yas Marina is the second Formula One track in the Middle East, with the first being in Bahrain. This month also sees the return of the Mexican Grand Prix. A return to the F1 calendar was sealed for 2015 after an injection of both private and government money. The facility has been upgraded, while the entire track is to be resurfaced for the occasion, with changes also being made to a number of corners.

12th -17th Nov: UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying play-offs The play-offs of the UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying tournament will decide the final four teams which qualify for the UEFA Euro 2016 finals tournament. Each of the four ties will be played over two home-and-away legs. The four winners will be found according to
the standard rules for the knockout phase in European competitions, and the winners will qualify for the Euro 2016 tournament. The highest ranked third placed team from the groups will qualify automatically for the tournament, while the remainder will enter the
playoffs. As most groups contain six teams but one contains five, matches against the sixth-placed team in each group are not included in this ranking. As a result, a total of eight matches played by each team count toward the purpose of the third-placed ranking table.

RECIPE
Call us: 0191 4871834 Recipes by Kirsty Hale, Riverford Cook and www.riverford.co.uk/recipes
Smoky Quinoa-Stuffed Peppers with Sheep’s Cheese INGREDIENTS 2 large or 3 smaller red peppers, cut in half lengthways, seeds and membranes removed 3 tbsp sunflower or light olive oil, for roasting and frying 1 onion, finely chopped 100g quinoa 1 garlic clove, finely chopped or crushed ¼–½ tsp smoked paprika, depending on how much you like it 1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes, or use ripe, diced fresh tomatoes, peeled if you prefer 150g Wootton White or other salty vegetarian sheep’s cheese Small bunch of parsley, finely chopped Salt and pepper
Method: Heat the oven to 200C/Gas 6. Put the peppers in a baking dish, toss with a little oil to coat, and season with salt and pepper.
Roast in the oven for about 20–30 minutes, depending on size, while you make the filling. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a medium-sized, heavy-bottomed saucepan. Add the onion. Fry on a low heat for 10 minutes, stirring now and then to stop it catching. Meanwhile, rinse the quinoa well in a sieve under cold water. After the 10 minutes, add the garlic and quinoa to the onion. Cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Add the smoked paprika, tomatoes and half a tinful of water. Season with salt and pepper. Bring the pan to a low boil, then cook for 15 minutes, stirring regularly. Keep a good eye on the liquid and the heat; you want the quinoa to absorb the liquid so you’re left at the end with a risotto-like consistency, but not for the pan to boil dry – add a splash more water if needed. Once the quinoa has cooked, remove from the heat. Take the peppers out of the oven, fill their cavities with the quinoa mixture and return them to the oven for 5 minutes to warm through. Remove the dish from the oven. Divide the peppers between serving plates, crumble over some of the cheese and scatter over the parsley.

“The festival site was created over a two-year period, on 200 acres of derelict land”
The Gateshead Garden Festival The Gateshead Garden Festival was the fourth of the United Kingdom’s five National Garden Festivals. Held between May and October 1990, in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, it lasted 157 days, and received over three million visitors. Attractions included public art displays, a Ferris wheel, and dance, music, theatre and sporting events. Several modes of transport were provided around the site: a monorail which ran between Norwood and Eslington, a narrow gauge steam railway between Dunston and Redheugh, and a road train which covered the entire site. A ferry across the River Tyne, between Dunston Staithes and Newcastle Quayside, was also provided.
The festival site was created over a two-year period, on 200 acres (0.81 km2) of derelict land, previously the site of a gasworks, a coal depot and a coking plant. The cost of reclaiming and redeveloping the land was around £37 million. After the festival ended, much of the site was replaced by housing.
DID YOU KNOW: During the five months period of the festival over 25,000 hours of events and entertainment took place, 2,500 jobs were created, 200,000 ferris wheel rides taken, 50,000 gallons of tea drunk and 1 million ice creams were eaten.
