IN THE GARDEN

OUT AND ABOUT

Grow Monday Where flowers bloom, so does hope... Enjoy plant-related craft activities. This is a drop-in session at the Young Engineers’ Zone. 10/04/17, 11am - 3pm, Cragside

Sowing and planting Spring is finally here as daffodils and flowering trees start to bloom, here are some tasks that can be done in and around the garden this month. Sweet peas can be sown outside this month. Plant out autumn-sown sweet peas that have been raised in pots, and prepare your wigwam supports for them to climb, using a light twine to tie the plants in. When space becomes available in the greenhouse, pot up cuttings of tender perennials taken last summer and at the beginning of this year. Bulk up plant numbers by taking more cuttings from the largest of the new plants. Plant summer-flowering bulbs, if not done already. Prepare the soil first, to ensure that drainage is sufficient to prevent the bulbs rotting. Anemone coronaria tubers, for instance, need particularly well-drained soils.

Gardener Question Time Meet the team behind the scenes and discover more about Cragside’s gardens. The gardening team will tell you all about the work they’re doing, seasonal highlights, and answer any of your questions. Meet at the Formal Garden. Every Thursday, 11.00am - 12pm, + 2pm - 3pm, Cragside

This month’s jobs 1

Keep weeds under control

2

Protect fruit blossom from late frosts

3

Tie in climbing and rambling roses

4

Plan a continuous crop of cut flowers for this summer. Perennials such as delphiniums and annuals can be grown to produce a useful and beautiful display.

Sow hardy annuals, herbs and wild flower seed outdoors

5

Start to feed citrus plants

6

Towards the end of the month, in mild areas, you may be able to plant up your hanging baskets for the summer.

Increase the water given to houseplants

7

Feed hungry shrubs and roses

8

Sow new lawns or repair bare patches

9

Prune fig trees

You can still plant herbaceous perennials such as Geranium, Astrantia (‘Burgundy Manor’ pictured left) and Oriental poppies. Check that the plants you buy have strong, green shoots and plant them into well-prepared soil.

JOSHUA V KLITSCHKO, WEMBLEY STADIUM Boxing returns to Wembley Stadium for a heavyweight bout of titanic proportions. On Saturday 29 April 2017 Anthony Joshua will face Wladimir Klitschko under the arch for the IBF, IBO and WBA Super Heavyweight Championships of the world. It will be the second time in three years Matchroom Boxing have partnered with the national stadium to bring boxing to an enormous stadium audience. In 2014 a packed house saw Carl Froch knock out George Groves in a highly anticipated rematch. Joshua was the opening fight of that memorable night as he despatched Matt Legg inside a mere 86 seconds. No doubt the current IBF World Heavyweight Champion would love a repeat of that performance on 29 April! www.wembleystadium.com

RECIPE

Call us: 0191 4871834 Recipes by Kirsty Hale, Riverford Cook and www.riverford.co.uk/recipes

Courgette, Lemon and Poppy Seed Cake Courgettes and ground almonds give this light, zingy gluten-free cake a wonderfully moist texture. With a dusting of poppy seeds inside and on top, this make an exquisite summer teatime treat. The moisture from the courgettes means it keeps well in an airtight container for several days. 1. Preheat your oven to 180oC/Gas 4. Lightly grease a 23cm springform cake tin and line with baking parchment. 2. Warm the milk, poppy seeds and lemon zest in a small pan for a couple of minutes, then remove from the heat and leave to cool. 3. Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl until pale, light and fluffy (an electric hand mixer makes life easier). Beat in the egg yolks, one at a time. 4. Stir in the almond extract, flour and ground almonds. Fold in the courgettes and cooled milk. 5. Whisk the egg whites in a separate clean bowl to stiff peaks. Add a large spoonful to the courgette mixture and stir in, then gently fold in the rest, keeping as much air in the mixture as possible. Pour into the tin. 6. Bake for about 60 minutes, depending on your oven, until firm to the touch; it should spring back when you lightly press the middle. Cool in the tin for 15 minutes, then turn onto a wire rack to cool completely.

INGREDIENTS 75ml whole milk 2 tbsp poppy seeds Zest of 2 lemons, finely grated 250g unsalted butter, plus a little extra for greasing the tin 250g light brown soft sugar 4 eggs, yolks & whites separated ½ tsp almond extract 200g gluten-free self-raising flour 75g ground almonds 250g grated weight of courgettes FOR THE TOPPING: 300g icing sugar 1½ tsp lemon zest, finely grated 30g unsalted butter 2 tbsp lemon juice 1 tbsp poppy seeds

16

7. To make the topping, sift the icing sugar into a bowl. Add the lemon zest. Melt the butter and pour over the icing sugar. 8. Add the lemon juice and stir together quickly, adding a splash of cold water if needed, until you have a thick but spreadable icing. Use a pallet knife to spread over the cake. 9. Leave for about 30 minutes if you can, so the icing can set a little, before serving sprinkled with poppy seeds.
