Discover: Woodlands

IN THE GARDEN

There are always things to see and do in this magical habitat, whether you’re crunching through fallen leaves or searching for shy wildlife in hidden glades. Woodlands are Britain’s richest and most diverse habitat. Much of the UK used to be covered by woodland, and thousands of species are adapted to live in them. They come in many different sizes and types, so what you’ll see will depend on where you are, what the trees are like, and, of course, what time of year it is.

Enjoy your garden This is the time of year to enjoy the colours and scents of your garden. At dusk you may notice moths visiting honeysuckle and other scented flowers. As evening begins to fall, yet more perfume is produced by annuals, such as nicotiana, night-scented stocks and evening primroses. You might also spot bats swooping over scented flowers, snapping up insects. Competition for food among birds can be intense, with so many young fledglings on the scene. It’s good to keep feeders topped up if you go away for any length of time - you could ask a neighbour to take over. Even if you haven’t got a garden, it’s possible to grow plants in pots on a sunny balcony or patio. Try

petunias, convolvulus, phacelia, or pot marigolds, and dead-head them regularly to encourage fresh flowering. You can also grow herbs such as thyme and marjoram. However, you’ll need to water all pot plants regularly in the summer - daily if it doesn’t rain. If your lawn looks brown, it will recover once it rains. You can try letting the grass grow a bit longer. If you have a patch that tends to go brown regularly, consider creating a gravel garden in this area. Applying mulch to borders when the ground is wet after rain will help retain moisture.

A huge variety of plants, shrubs and trees grow in our woodlands, all providing homes and food for even bigger numbers of creatures of all sizes. Oak trees can support more than 200 insect species alone.

VISITOR TIPS: 1. Visit early in the day when bird activity is at a peak. 2. Use your ears as well as your eyes - listen for bird songs and calls. 3. Try to walk softly and make as little noise as possible to increase your chances of getting good views of wildlife. 4. Remember to look down as well as up in the treetops - it is easy to walk past wildflowers, insects and fungi.

This month’s jobs Harvest hay if you have let your lawn grow tall. Rake up lawn clippings to keep fertility down. Dead-head flowers. Keep down unwanted weeds by hoeing. Clip beech, holly and hornbeam hedges. Keep pot plants watered. Take semi-ripe cuttings. Continue making sowings of outdoor vegetables Information and guidance provided by www.rhs.org.uk and www.rspb.org.uk

SPORTS GUIDE: JULY 2016

The Open 2016 F1 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

8TH - 10TH JULY

2013 Champion: Phil Mickelson ©David W. Leindecker

The Open was founded by pioneering golfers who had one guiding principle to crown the Champion Golfer of the Year. Since 1860, The Open has been played over some of the world’s most cherished links courses and has produced a remarkable legacy of great champions.

It is the oldest and most international championship in professional golf and the Claret Jug - first presented in 1873 - is one of the most iconic trophies in all of sport.

1860. The very first Open.

From earlier greats such as Harry Vardon, Bobby Jones, Henry Cotton and Walter Hagen through modern legends such as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, Gary Player and Seve Ballesteros to exceptional talents of today Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy, the greatest players in the world have faced the unrelenting challenge of The Open for more than 150 years.

On 17 October 1860, eight professionals assembled at Prestwick for a tournament to determine who would be the Champion golfer. The winner was to receive the Challenge Belt, a prize crafted from red Moroccan leather and worth £25. The competitors played three rounds on the then 12hole links, with Willie Park Sr beating Old Tom Morris by two shots. A year later, Prestwick announced that the tournament “shall be open to all the world.”

12

This year will be the The 145th Open and will be played at Royal Troon between 10th - 17th July 2016. www.theopen.com

The 1950 British Grand Prix at Silverstone was the first race in the newly created World Championship of Drivers. The race rotated between Silverstone, Aintree and Brands Hatch from 1955 to 1986, but relocated permanently to Silverstone in 1987. On 30 September 2004 British Racing Drivers’ Club president Jackie Stewart announced that the British Grand Prix would not be included on the 2005 provisional race calendar and, if it were, would probably not occur at Silverstone However, on 9 December an agreement was reached with Formula One rights holder Bernie Ecclestone ensuring that the track would host the British Grand Prix until 2009 after which Donington Park would become the new host. However, the Donington Park leaseholders suffered economic problems resulting in the BRDC signing a 17-year deal with Ecclestone to hold the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

DATE FOR THE DIARY: Wimbledon 2016 27 June - 10 July

RECIPE

Call us: 0191 4871834 Recipes by Kirsty Hale, Riverford Cook and www.riverford.co.uk/recipes

Summer Vegetable Paella with Saffron & Lemon

A vegetarian adaptation of the traditional Spanish dish, paella rice is readily available but use short-grain brown or Arborio if you can’t find it. Saffron threads give the dish its unique flavour. INGREDIENTS Sunflower or light olive oil, for frying 1 onion, finely diced 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped, grated or crushed 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into 5mm-thick slices 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and cut into 5mmthick slices 200g paella rice – calasparra paella rice if you can get it 100g mushrooms, finely sliced 3 tomatoes, diced ¼ tsp smoked paprika ¼ tsp paprika 2 pinches of saffron threads 1 litre of good veg stock 100g green beans or sugar snaps, or a mixture of both (if using beans, top, tail and chop into thirds) Good handful of parsley, chopped 1 lemon, cut into wedges Salt and pepper

You can use any sort of green beans in this; try double-podded broad, sliced runners or flat green beans.

Serves: 2 Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a heavy-bottomed paella pan or large frying pan or flameproof casserole. Add the onion and fry gently on a low heat for 10 minutes, stirring now and then. Add the garlic and peppers to the onion and stir for 2 minutes. Add the rice, mushrooms, tomatoes, both types of paprika and saffron. Pour in three quarters of the stock and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Keep an eye on the liquid and top up with a little more stock or water as needed (you might not need it all). The paella shouldn’t be sloppy at the end so add liquid sparingly during the last 10 minutes. While the paella is cooking, boil the green beans for 3 minutes, then refresh them in a bowl of very cold water. If you are using sugar snaps, you can simply throw them in raw towards the

end of cooking (see below). After 30 minutes of cooking, check the rice is tender and cook a little longer if needed. If there is any excess liquid, turn up the heat and stir to boil it off. Then cook very gently without stirring, to create a crust on the bottom (it’s not very easy to achieve without a proper paella pan, though). Stir in the beans and parsley. Turn off the heat and leave to stand for 2 minutes, then check the seasoning and serve with wedges of lemon.
