GARDENING TIPS JUNE 2015
SUMMER IS HERE
THIS MONTH’S GENERAL MAINTENANCE TIPS June 21 is the longest day of the year, and the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on an exuberant burst of growth. But this extra light and warmth also means weeds will sprout up from seemingly nowhere. Keep on top of them by hoeing regularly in dry conditions. FLOWERS Plant out summer bedding and seed-raised plants, if not already done so. Make sure they are well watered in and keep moist during dry weather. Plant out cannas and dahlias once danger of frost has passed. Gaps in herbaceous borders are best filled with annual bedding at this stage in the season. One exception is anemones (e.g. Anemone coronaria), which take about three months to flower after planting. The rhizomes are best planted now, after an overnight soaking, 5cm (2in) deep in a suitably moist but free-draining
soil or compost with lots of added leaf mould or organic matter. LAWNS Regularly mow lawns to keep them in shape - removing ‘little and often’ is the key to a good quality sward. Continue cutting lawn edges with a half-moon edging iron to ensure they are neat. Add grass clippings to the compost heap in thin layers (too much grass all at once is likely to be very wet and poorly aerated, resulting in smelly slime rather than compost). Apply a high nitrogen summer lawn fertiliser if not done last month to encourage a healthylooking lawn - always follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, as any over-use or runoff can cause water pollution. Move garden furniture and other objects regularly to allow grass to recover and prevent yellow patches. Ensure new lawns (either from turf or seed) do not dry out during hot weather, as turves will shrink if allowed to dry out, and fail to knit together.
Information and guidance provided by www.rhs.org.uk and www.rspb.org.uk
IN THE GREENHOUSE Open doors and vents on greenhouses to increase ventilation on warm, sunny days. Damp down the floor of the greenhouse regularly on hot days, to increase humidity levels. This benefits plant growth and also reduces the risk of pest problems such as glasshouse red spider mite. Give plants a liquid feed to encourage flowering and fruiting. Apply shade paint to the outside of the glass or use blinds on sunny days to prevent temperatures from soaring. Don’t forget to give greenhouse plants more space as they put on new growth. This will help to prevent disease, and to contain early pest infestations. Check plants at least every few days, to see if they need watering. Seedlings will need daily attention. Use rain, grey or recycled water wherever possible. Continue to prick out and pot on new seedlings and cuttings. Harden off half-hardy bedding plants that were started off under cover.

HEALTH AND FITNESS
15 REASONS TO EXERCISE
It’s normal to have days where you just don’t feel like exercising. You feel too busy, too stressed and quite simply too tired. And you forget about all the amazing benefits that a consistent and challenging exercise routine gives you. I’m here to remind you. Here’s a list of 15 of the top reasons to exercise. Pull out this list and read it when you’re having one of those days. 1. TO BE HAPPIER Exercise has been shown to stimulate brain chemicals that induce relaxation and happiness. When you’re having a bad day, lace up your shoes for an invigorating workout and feel happier. 2. TO REDUCE DISEASE Exercise has been proven to reduce the risk of pretty much every single health problem known to man, from stroke to heart disease to cancer and osteoporosis. Exercise is also a great defense against type 2 diabetes, one of the most widely growing diseases of our time. 3. TO LOOK AMAZING Exercise firms your muscles, improves your posture and even makes your skin glow. Looking amazing is a wonderful result of regular exercise. It’s very rewarding when the people in your life start to notice your transformation. 4. TO REACH YOUR GOAL WEIGHT Exercise burns fat and helps you keep it off. If you want to have a leaner, healthier body, exercise is your answer. 5. TO BE ENERGIZED Remember that feeling you experience after a great workout? You’re body is buzzing with energy, you’re less easily irritated and feel more peaceful. 6. TO GET BETTER SLEEP Exercise boosts energy levels during the day, but also wears you out. Recovering from a challenging workout will help you relax and reach a deeper level of sleep. 7. TO SLOW AGING Regular exercise is one of the most effective ways to slow aging. When you age your body loses muscle and bone, and the loss of both are drastically reduced with regular exercise. You’ll also enjoy a reduction in inflammation.
8. TO LESSEN BACK PAIN In most cases, the most effective thing that you can do for back pain is to move and strengthen those muscles. Always consult your physician or physical therapist for guidance if you have an injury. 9. TO REDUCE DEPRESSION Studies have shown that exercise is able to reduce depression – sometimes even as effectively as medication. Even if you don’t feel like getting up off the couch to sweat through a workout, remember that you’ll feel happier and more alive once you’ve done it. 10. TO FEEL FEWER ACHES AND PAINS When you strengthen the muscles around your damaged joints you’re able to reduce joint pain and overall aches. Remember to always consult your G.P. before starting an exercise program, especially if you have chronic joint pain. 11. TO IMPROVE MEMORY Exercise has been proven to improve memory and other cognitive functions, and seems to have a protective effect against dementia. 12. TO ENJOY YOUR LIFE Whatever it is that you love in life – your kids, travel, sports, fashion - it is all more enjoyable when you experience it in a fit and healthy body. Find the motivation to exercise so that you’re able to enjoy all the great things in your life. 13. TO HAVE FEWER SICK DAYS Studies have shown that people who exercise regularly are 50% less likely to call in sick to work. With a regular exercise program you’ll experience a reduced number of colds and upper respiratory infections. 14. TO BURN CALORIES AT REST Building your muscles through exercise means that you’ll be burning extra calories even while at rest. You’ll be able to eat more and maintain your ideal weight with ease. 15. TO BE CONFIDENT When you are fit, feel healthy and have energy, the natural result is great confidence. The results are more than worth your efforts.

THE 2015 FINAL WILL BE PLAYED IN THE GERMAN CAPITAL.
Image: Pal Teravagimov / Shutterstock.com
UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL The 2015 UEFA Champions League Final will be played at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany (above), on 6 June 2015. The venue, was built for the 1936 Olympics and opened at the start of the Games. Designed by local architect Werner March, it originally accommodated 100,000 spectators. It has been the home of Hertha Berlin since 1963, when the Bundesliga was founded, and was the biggest stadium used during the 1974 FIFA World Cup, staging three matches. The ground underwent extensive renovations between 2000 and 2004 ahead of the 2006 World Cup, when the Olympiastadion held four group games – the quarter-final between Germany and Argentina, and the final between Italy and France.
14
Germany have played more than 30 matches at the Olympiastadion, perhaps most notably the 1972 UEFA European Championship quarter-final against England. After a 3-1 win at Wembley, a 0-0 draw was enough for eventual champions West Germany to progress. In October 2012 it witnessed a less happy occasion for Germany as Sweden came from four down to draw 4-4 in a World Cup qualifier. The German Cup final has taken place at the Olympiastadion since 1985, but it is a multi-sport arena. It was once home to American football team Berlin Thunder, and in 2009 the running track and infield hosted the 2009 IAAF World Championships in athletics. Source: www.uefa.com
FRENCH OPEN
The French Open, often referred to as Roland Garros (officially: Les internationaux de France de Tennis, Roland Garros; also called Tournoi de Roland Garros) is a major tennis tournament held over two weeks between late May and early June at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France. Named after the French aviator Roland Garros, it is the premier clay court tennis championship event in the world and the second of four annual Grand Slam tournaments; the other three being the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. Roland Garros is the only Grand Slam event held on clay and ends the spring clay court season.

RECIPE
www.teamvalleypublications.co.uk Recipes by Kirsty Hale, Riverford Cook and www.riverford.co.uk/recipes
Spinach Kedgeree INGREDIENTS Oil for frying 2 spring onions, plus extra to garnish 1½ tsp medium hot curry powder 1 garlic clove, crushed 4 cardamom pods, crushed 1 tsp freshly grated ginger pinch dried chilli flakes 1 tsp smoked paprika ¼ tsp turmeric 200g brown basmati rice, rinsed 800ml veg stock 3 eggs 100g beans (broad, french or runner), sliced 200g spinach, tough stalks removed 1 tbsp chopped chives Lemon wedges to serve
Serves 2 Prep Time: 10 mins Cook Time: 30 mins Method: We’ve swapped fish for spinach and added smoked paprika to replicate the smoky flavour. Non-vegetarians could add some smoked fish. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large saucepan, add the onion and fry gently for 2 mins. Add the garlic, cardamom, ginger, curry powder, chilli, paprika and turmeric. Fry for 1 min, then stir in the rice. Add the stock and bring to the boil. Cover and boil gently for 20 mins. Don’t let it boil dry top up with water if needed. Meanwhile, boil the eggs for 8 mins. Drain, then put in a bowl of cold water. Add the beans to the rice and cook for 2 mins. Add the spinach and cook for 3 mins or so, until wilted, and the rice is tender. Remove from the heat. Peel the eggs, quarter and add to the rice. Check the seasoning and sprinkle over the chives. Serve with lemon wedges.
