GARDENING TIPS MAY 2015
PEST AND DISEASE WATCH Inspect lilies for red lily beetles as the larvae can strip plants in days. Vine weevil larvae can be a serious pest of containerised plants, and become active this month. Tip out the rootball of suspect plants, and inspect for the creamy, orange-headed maggots, which tend to curl up into a ‘C’ shape. There are various chemical and biological controls available.
IT'S NEARLY SUMMER
THIS MONTH’S GENERAL MAINTENANCE TIPS Apply a liquid fertiliser to spring bulbs after they have flowered, to encourage good flowering next year, and help prevent daffodil blindness. Allow the foliage of daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs to die down naturally. Lift clumps of forget-me-not once the display wanes, and before too many seeds are released. They can become invasive if left unchecked. Put supports in place for herbaceous plants before they are too tall, or for those - like peonies - that produce heavy blooms. Harden off plants raised from seed and cuttings by leaving them outside for gradually increasing periods of time. Start with only the warmest part of the day, and build up to overnight exposure. Doing this for 10-14 days before planting them outdoors permanently (whenever the risk
of frost has passed), will reduce any check to their growth while establishing in their final position. Thin out direct sowings of hardy annuals and vegetables such as radishes. This is best done in two or three stages at fortnightly intervals. Final spacing should be between 10-20cm (4-8in), using the upper limit for tall or spreading plants, and the lower limit for smaller plants. Prick out indoor sowings when they are large enough to handle without damage.
Aphids can multiply rapidly during mild spells. Remove early infestations by hand to prevent the problem getting out of hand. Protect sweet pea plants in particular, as they can get sweet pea viruses. Continue to protect lily, delphinium, hosta and other susceptible plants from slugs and snails. Remove dead leaves from around the basal rosettes of alpine plants to prevent rotting. Top dress spring-flowering alpines with grit or gravel to show off the plants and help prevent rotting around the neck.
Hoe borders to prevent annual and perennial weeds from spreading and seeding themselves. Pinch out the leading shoots on plants such as Chrysanthemum and Helianthus to encourage bushy plants. However, if tall thin sprays are preferred, they can be left un-pinched, perhaps removing a few buds (known as ‘disbudding’) to encourage larger blooms.

SPORT
THE FA CUP FINAL MAY 30 The first FA Cup Final at Wembley was the famous ‘White Horse Final’ back in 1923 where Bolton Wanderers defeated West Ham United 2-0. The FA Cup Final was then always played at Wembley until the stadium closed in 2000 and returned when the it reopened in 2007. Last year’s final was one of the most dramatic the new Wembley has witnessed. Hull City, in their first ever FA Cup Final, raced into a 2-0 lead only to be pegged by Arsenal who then went on to win the game in extra-time courtesy of Aaron Ramsey’s goal. But who will be victorious this year?

MUTUA MADRID OPEN
The Mutua Madrid Open is one of the most important Tennis tournaments on both the male and female circuits today. It has been held in the Spanish capital since 2002 and was originally a male only competition played indoors and on hard court. However, in 2009 it opened its doors to the WTA circuit and changed to an outdoor clay competition. Since the tournament was revamped it is now a Masters 1000 event in the men’s category and a Premier event in the women’s, placed only behind the Grand Slams in terms of precedence. The Mutua Madrid Open is the second most important clay-court tournament on the calendar, and year upon year attracts the world’s best players. The list of tournament winners is spectacular, and no fewer than six world number ones in the men’s game have previously won the
12
trophy, including Andre Agassi, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Marat Safin, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. Switzerland’s Roger Federer and Spain’s Rafael Nadal are the most garlanded players with three victories each, whilst the Bryan brothers Bob and Mike have won five doubles titles. In the women’s category, the tournament has been played since 2009, but of the nine players to have reached the final in Madrid, six have been at the top of the WTA rankings: Dinara Safina, Caroline Wozniaki, Venus Williams, Victoria Azarenka, Serena Williand and Maria Sharapova. America’s Serena Williams has dominated the tournament in recent years, winning the 2012 and 2013 editions, downing Azarenka and Sharapova respectively in each of the finals.

Serves 2 Prep Time: 10 mins Cook Time: 25 mins Method: Put the jasmine rice and star anise in a small saucepan (one with a lid). Add a pinch of salt and 400ml water. Bring to the boil and cook for 5 mins, then cover, remove from the heat and leave to steam for approx 20-25 mins, until the rice has absorbed the liquid and is soft and sticky. Remove the star anise. Once the rice is cooked, put the sesame seeds in a dry wok or large frying pan and gently heat for 30 secs-1 min, stirring, until toasted. Tip onto a plate and keep to one side. Heat the oil in the wok (or pan) until smoking. Add the beef, asparagus, ginger and garlic and fry, stirring, for 3 mins. Add the hoisin and soy sauces.
