SUMMER IS PROGRESSING TIME TO SIT AND ENJOY YOUR GARDEN This is often one of the hottest months of the year and a great time to sit out and enjoy your garden. Keep plants looking good by regularly dead-heading, and you’ll enjoy a longer display of blooms. Make sure you keep new plants well watered, using grey water where possible, and hoe off weeds, which thrive in the sunshine. FRUIT TIPS n Check tree ties as tree trunk girth increases. n Water cranberries, lingonberries and blueberries regularly with rainwater. Tap water will do when butts run dry. n Complete summer pruning of gooseberries and red/white currants. n Pollinate female indoor melon flowers, then pinch out 2cm (0.75in) beyond the flower. n Pinch out the growing point of outdoor melons twice, at four-week intervals.
n Water and feed outdoor melons regularly once established.

Check clematis for signs of clematis wilt
n Pull off suckers appearing around the base of fruit trees.

Place conservatory plants outside now that it is warm
n Make sure fruit isn’t drought stressed, especially those in containers, against a wall or newly planted.

n Give regular liquid feeds to plants growing in containers. n Protect heavily-laden fruit tree and bush branches against snapping under the weight. Use a stake or prop to keep them upright.

The 2015 Ashes test series between England and Australia returns this month, beginning in Cardiff.

The venues for the 2015 Ashes series were confirmed on 22 September 2011 as Lord’s, Trent Bridge, the SWALEC Stadium, Edgbaston and The Oval. The fixtures were announced on 12 May 2014
It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London since 1877. It is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments (Majors), the others being the Australian Open, the French Open (Roland Garros) and the US Open. Since the Australian Open shifted to hard court in 1988, Wimbledon is the only Major still played on grass, the game’s original surface, which gave the game its original name of “lawn tennis”.
Starting with this series, the four-year cycle of Ashes series in England will be brought forward by two years. Similarly, series in Australia were brought forward one year beginning with the 2013–14 series. The term originated in a satirical obituary published in a British
newspaper, The Sporting Times, immediately after Australia’s 1882 victory at The Oval, their first Test win on English soil. The obituary stated that English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia. The mythical ashes immediately became associated with the 1882–83 series played in Australia, before which the English captain Ivo Bligh had vowed to “regain those ashes”. The English media therefore dubbed the tour the quest to regain the Ashes.

Broad Bean Fritters with Sweet Chilli Sauce Fresh tasting, with a kick from the chilli sauce. Serve with a salad as a main course for 4, or on their own as a starter for a BBQ for more.
INGREDIENTS 300g broad beans (podded weight) 125g self-raising flour 2 eggs 2 tbsp crème fraîche 75ml milk 2x whole sussex slipcote sheep’s cheese with garlic & herbs 6-8 mint leaves, finely chopped A few finely chopped chives Butter & oil for frying Riverford sweet chilli sauce, to serve
Serves 4 Prep Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 12 mins Method: Cook the podded beans in a pan of boiling water for 3 mins, then drain and refresh in cold water. Peel off the outer skins and discard, leaving the bright green inner bean. In a large bowl, whisk the flour, eggs, crème fraîche and milk, until you have a smooth, thick batter. Crumble in the cheese, broad beans, mint and chives. Season with salt and pepper. Melt a little oil and butter in a large frying pan. Add spoonfuls of the mixture (you’ll need to cook them in 2 or 3 batches). Cook on a medium heat on one side for 2-3 mins, until golden brown (you’ll see small bubbles appearing as they’re ready), then turn and cook for 2 mins or so on the other side, until cooked through. Serve with sweet chilli sauce.

GATESHEAD’S BIGGEST PANTO SET FOR CHRISTMAS RUN
A brand new, exciting panto is being re-launched in the Gateshead area for Christmas 2015. Nice Swan Theatre Company are behind the magical fairytale, Cinderella which we hope will be the first of many popular pantomimes being staged in a specially constructed theatre venue in Whickham, Gateshead. The new theatre setup is being created within a sports venue in Whickham School which will allow over 9,000 local residents, schools and groups to enjoy festive entertainment on their doorstep this December. The greatest fairytale of them all will run from 17 December until Christmas Eve with a number of scheduled performances for public and schools. The project is being produced by local lad Jamie Gray (25, Whickham) who has been keen to bring larger scale productions to this side of the river for many years. “I’ve been involved in theatre from a really young age, I produced my first ever show eight years ago when I was in sixth form - It was a bit ropey as you’d expect at 17 years old but

Jamie has produced pantomime in Whickham for the past three years in collaboration with writer, composer and performer Thomas Whalley (also 25 from Whickham). Thomas, who has recently finished training at Associated Studios in London, and a run on London’s West End as part of the cast of She Loves Me at the Landor Theatre, has written the past successful shows and will once again be putting pen to paper writing this year’s rags to riches tale. Tom stresses “Panto is in my blood, my grandma used to produce pantomimes back in the good old days! I relocated to London last year but I am delighted to be able to be writing and returning to Whickham as part of our new panto. I can’t wait to come home and get started; my Christmas wouldn’t be the same without it.”

DURHAM BRASS FESTIVAL
BRASS is back in 2015 with a fantastic programme of brass-inspired events coming to Durham from 16-19 July! Thursday 16 July: Swing takes centre stage when Pete Long’s great orchestra recreates that fabulous night in New York featuring In The Mood, One O’Clock Jump, Little Brown Jug, The Sheik Of Araby, Pennsylvania 6-5000 and many more classics. Friday 17 July: New Yorks’ finest ‘Fun Lovin’ Criminals’ perform an extra special headline set, featuring all the hits from three decades of platinum selling funk, soul and rock n’ roll from Scooby Snacks to Loco. Huey, Frank and Fast will be bolstered by Ron Christlow (trombone), Ed Collins (trumpet) and Jon Melville (sax). Tredegar Town Band and Cory Band. Sunday 19 July: A spectacular concert featuring sets by two of the best competition bands in the world. This brass band spectacular sees Cory and Tredegar joining forces with Durham’s Reg Vardy Band, the North East’s top competition band to form a oneoff 80-piece brass ensemble to perform the premiere of Pathways, a new work written by multi-award winning composer Lucy Pankhurst. Volunteers aim to increase awareness and self management of arthritis by providing information about their condition, self management techniques and local sign posting. Volunteers assist on Arthritis Care stands at various hospital and community venues throughout Gateshead and the surrounding area. Training will be given for this role and all expenses are reimbursed.
