How to feed
It’s good to invest in quality feeders and roofed bird tables, which will keep food dry and stop it going off. Place the feeders out in the open and high enough so they are out of reach of ground predators like cats. But they need to be close enough to thick cover like bushes, so that small birds can beat a hasty retreat from aerial predators such as sparrowhawks. Move the feeders to different locations over the course of a year so that you don’t get a build-up of debris underneath.
When to feed
It is fine to feed all year-round - just adjust the amount you put out. In summer, when many birds leave to breed in the countryside, they’ll need less food. And there’s a lot more food available naturally in autumn and even early winter, as flowers set seed and berries ripen. Fatty foods can go off in summer, so remove any which are past their best.
This month’s jobs Clear up fallen autumn leaves regularly. Cut back perennials that have died down. Move tender plants, including aquatic ones, into the greenhouse. Plant out spring cabbages. Harvest apples, pears, grapes and nuts. Prune climbing roses. Order seeds for next year. Last chance to mow lawns and trim hedges in mild areas. Renovate old lawns or create new grass areas by laying turf.

Volunteers aim to increase awareness and self management of arthritis by providing information about their condition, self management techniques and local sign posting. Volunteers assist on Arthritis Care stands at various hospital and community venues throughout Gateshead and the surrounding area. Vegetable Quesadillas Serves: 4
INGREDIENTS 1 small to medium-sized butternut squash, peeled and cut into 1–2cm dice 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into 1–2cm dice Kernels from 1 sweetcorn cob 1 red onion, peeled and finely diced ½ tsp ground cumin ¼ tsp ground coriander ¼ tsp paprika A good pinch of smoked paprika 1–2 red chillies (depending on heat and your preference for it), deseeded and finely chopped Light olive oil for roasting, frying and brushing 4 large flour tortillas 150g Cheddar, grated Large handful of coriander leaves Salt and pepper
Method: Heat the oven to 190°C/Gas 5. Toss the squash, pepper, corn, onion, spices, chilli and 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large baking dish. Season with salt and pepper. Roast the veg in the oven for 35–40 minutes, until tender, tossing once halfway through so it cooks evenly. Remove from the oven and turn the temperature down low, to approximately 130°C/Gas 1. Brush each tortilla on one side with a little oil and put one into a large non-stick frying pan, oil-side down. Sprinkle some cheese over one half, then the veg mixture, then a few coriander leaves. Fold the other half of the tortilla over to make a semi-circle, gently pressing down with your hands to flatten it slightly. Cook for a couple of minutes, until the underside of the tortilla is crisp and golden brown (keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn). Carefully turn it over and cook the other side until crisp and golden. Keep warm in the oven while you cook the remainder. Cut each one in half to serve.

LOCAL HISTORY
The Derwent Walk
“At its peak in 1914 the railway was carrying over half a million passengers a year” Derwent Walk was a branch railway in County Durham known as The Derwent Valley Railway. Built by the North Eastern Railway, it ran from Swalwell (now in Tyne and Wear) to Blackhill via five intermediate stations, and onwards to Consett. Constructed as an extension of the existing Lanchester Valley Railway, the Lanchester Railway Extension as it was originally known was opened in 1867 after three years building work. Four viaducts were constructed and a deep, 800-metre (870 yd) long cutting was dug near Rowlands Gill. The Nine Arches Viaduct was one of the major engineering feats of the railway. It is 500 ft (150 m) long and was built because the Earl of Strathmore would not allow the railway to pass through the Gibside Estate. At its peak in 1914 the railway was carrying over half a million passengers a year with a regular goods traffic of timber, bricks and coal to Newcastle and iron ore to Consett. The railway is notable for an unsolved murder that occurred at Lintz Green railway station. The stationmaster, Joseph Wilson, met his death on the
night of 7 October 1911. No satisfactory explanation was ever forthcoming despite one of the most intensive murder investigations ever carried out in the North East of England. High Westwood Station was closed in 1942 while the remaining stations survived into the 1950s. The line finally closed on 11 November 1963. The railway is commemorated in the Geordie folk song about an ill-fated train journey from Rowlands Gill, Wor Nanny’s a Mazer. Present day: Durham County Council have since developed the route into a multi-user path and Gateshead Council into a country park, part of the Sustrans network of national foot and cycle paths. The viaducts and bridges were repaired and the track-bed has now become a section of the Sea to Sea Cycle Route.
