Above: Entry to courtyard. Opposite page: Entry to house and glass-encased steel stair.
HOUSE ROCKENFELLER Lake Constance , Switzerland Located on the shores of Lake Constance, on the swiss side, this home was created for a young race car driver and his wife. The home was designed with the idea of living on the infinite plane between a virtual and actual lake. This was accomplished by the using of travertine flooring inside and out, and a large mirrored wall on the opposite side of the lake that reflects the image of the house and the lake beyond it. The open floor plan and slim mullioned sliding glass doors create the perfect atmosphere for outdoor living and social gathers.

“RHYTHMIC CURVES AND SUN BATHED POOLS
Description of thumbnail.
CASA SON VIDA Mallorca, Spain Located approximately 15 minutes outside of Palma de Mallorca in an exclusive community called Son Vida, the eponymously named Casa is an example of design poetry in motion. The completion of this remarkable home marks the arrival of third millennia architecture on the island of Mallorca. The task at hand was straightforward: take a very un-extraordinary existing Mediterranean villa constructed in the 60s and transform it into something extraordinary. The 800 SM luxury villa transgresses the constraints of site and context, redefining luxury architecture as it is typified by the prolific faux tuscan styles otherwise found on the island.

“POETIC AND SIMPLE, YET NETZERO SUSTAINABLE. LOW ENERGY , HIGH AESTHETICS
20mm thick steel stair.
VILLA LANKENBERG Ermatingen, Switzerland This project is a compound of spaces on Lake Constance, finished by tecARCHITECTURE Switzerland and tecDESIGN Los Angeles. The structure is basically a terrace house with 4 levels overlooking lake Constance. We decided to come up with a steel/ concrete construction to maximize thermal storage, and guarantee large spans, in order to pull the outside and the breathtaking views into the building. All units share that view. Our office on the lowest level is a simple exposed concrete loft. The building faces north, so the solar impact on the glass is negligible. The Ermatingen building features state of the art sustainable technologies. Energy is being generated geothermally (we drilled 800 ft down), and solar. Heating and cooling works through activated masses - hence the concrete, open floors etc.

CLOUD NO. 7 Stuttgart, Germany When famous car designer Sergio Scaglietti was designing his legendary racing cars in the 1950s and 60s, he coined a phrase that also applies to architecture – an approach that we have adopted as our basic philosophy at our design studio in Los Angeles: It’s not only about the function of the form , but about the desire it creates. Cloud No 7 is a project whose design was developed with passion, whose shape was drawn with the heart and soul of our designers and architects, with functionality meeting the highest standards – representing the state of the art in technology in building services and sustainability.

FACADE The hotel’s facade is a dichotomy between multiple opposites. On the southern and sea side of the building, large expanses of glass open up to views of the sea. Sun shading louvers that are controlled by software to reduce solar heat gain during the hot hours of each day and completely disappear behind the white horizontal bands. Various colors of tinted film give the facade a subtle variation, and enhance the performance of the window units. All glass is Low-E, argon filled, and double glazed with a large portion of the facade being operable. On the northern, land forward side of the hotel, the facade embraces a more stylistic approach. Acting as a backdrop for evening activities, and an iconography for a grand entrance, the facade utilizes aluminum architectural screening elements. “INVENTING A NEW ICONOGRAPHIC NOTION FOR THE ‘GESTALT’
OF HI-TECH PRODUCTION AND ENGINEERING FACILITIES”
In the case of the Inotera Headquarters in Taipei this is achieved by infusing hi-tech requirements with emotional content. The all glass façade, typical for standard office buildings, is reinterpreted in light of Taiwan’s tradition of tile construction. Technology is thus explored in order to emulate cultural values and environmental aspects within a contemporary context. As there is no iconographic notion for the ‘Gestalt’ of hi-tech production and engineering facilities, the office building allows for its own expression; hundreds of shapes and colors portrait the formal complexity of natural elements such as the leaves of trees or ripples of water. An intricate assemblage of printed glass utilizing the latest glass printing technologies, structural glass and glass curtain wall systems, articulates a building that seeks to define its unique identity while assimilating local customs. In contrast to the transparent office structure, an attached fabrication facility provides a fantastic screen for a dadaesque ceramic tile composition that dilutes its scale by use of perspective geometries.

Inotera Headquarters in Taipei combined with a fabrication facility aims at creating a sense of identification, persona, and location for a new joint venture between a European and an Asian company. The structure’s working title “the culture lab” emphasizes its role in making the most of cultural differences while evoking the ambience of a social laboratory. Such use of new technology exemplifies its potential in improving our lives economically as well as aesthetically. This is key to a complex architectural approach that not only applies technological innovation but also internalizes it.

The building was completed in a record time of twelve months including its design. It was built on a very low budget, comparable to medium to medium low office building price standards within the country. The façade utilizes the latest technologies in CAD and CIM to provide a colorful , if not romantic image motivated by the colors of trees and skies. The extremely tight schedule in connection with the economically crucial ramp up process of the factory allowed for zero tolerance in design deadlines. The building has been published in countless magazines and books worldwide and was called by international press “an instant icon of modernity, showing the craftsmanship of the third millenium”.

This naturally ventilated zone acts as a climatic buffer, forming a transition between inside and outside. The building is wrapped with a system of fabric fins that not only shade the surface but also soften the contour of the building. This combination of form and texture creates a dynamic and almost mysterious appearance that stimulates an atmosphere of inspiration and lets the user partake in the creation of the company始s identity.

“ THE ART OF ARRANGING GRIDS OF CONDUCTING MATERIAL IN MULTIPLE LAYERS”
Description of thumbnail.
DEVELOPMENT CENTER Duisburg, Germany This building is a specialized studio building for designers of micro technology components. We call it the monastery of the nanometer. The microcosm of people who think in nanometers is being expressed by a Zen-like water garden surrounded by an organically shaped courtyard building. The highly specialized product is elusive and small. The art of arranging grids of conducting material in multiple layers, possibly even storing an entire encyclopedia on the area of a thumbnail, represents the key technology of the information age.

CAMPEON HQ Munich, Germany For companies today, the most important production factor is the knowledge possessed by its employees. This is what distinguishes the demands of modern working environments from the structures handed down from the industrial age. Today buildings and architectural structures are to provide employees with scope for innovation and creativity. With up to 7000 workstations, diverse office environments, a retail business, sports grounds, a civic park and spaces for the informal exchange of ideas, features of municipal structures are transferred to corporate headquarters. The division of the open spaces into, for example, park, campus, gardens, courtyards and terraces elucidates the concept of the campus town.

MARINA BAY IDC Singapore Marina Bay invites the city of Singapore to redefine itself. Running a total length of 2.2 miles, the waterfront of the artificially created marina will be developed beyond the standards of gross floor area demands and their respective costs. By adding a rich urban fabric of cultural diversity and strong sense of identity, an animated downtown environment will evolve. This operation, joined with the incorporation of the grand water surface and the generous connections between the marina’s open spaces become the means used to abolish the ongoing contradiction between the city center and its periphery

Hamburg-Harburg, Germany Part of the Ecocity development in Hamburg-Harburg, this quad focuses on residential housing. The masterplan done earlier by tec, called for integration of the historic building to the sites southern side. The design of this apartment building encompasses a courtyard. Strict acoustic regulations governed the design of the building. Within a very industrial zone, the building reacts bey creating a deep facade towards the outside. Glassed-in winter-gardens provide outdoor space for each apartment while blocking noise from the nearby railway. Integrated planters within the facade act as vegetative filters cleaning the air around them and providing a touch of nature in an industrial zone. Intensive green roofs provide communal space.
