ZACH KITTLEY Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks

Career Breakdown: Kittley returned to his alma mater to put together a strong debut season as the Red Raiders averaged 34.2 points per game and 461.4 yards of total offense per game despite using three different starting quarterbacks during the year. Kittley has worked with a pair of NFL quarterbacks during his short coaching career, first with Patrick Mahomes II at Texas Tech and then Bailey Zappe at both Houston Baptist and Western Kentucky.

Career Breakdown: Perry, a legendary high school head coach in the DFW metroplex, had one of the nation’s top running back duos in 2022 to go with the reliability on special teams with punter Austin McNamara and kicker Trey Wolff. Perry spent 14 years as a high school head coach, finishing 67-22 over his final seven seasons at Arlington Bowie alone. He is a former member of the THSCA Board of Directors.

Josh Bookbinder

Inside Linebackers

Career Breakdown: Bookbinder was among Joey McGuire’s first hires at Texas Tech after the two previously served on the defensive staff at Baylor (201921). Bookbinder mentored Krishon Merriweather during his debut season on the Texas Tech staff for a Red Raider defense that allowed less than 30.0 points per game for the first time since 2009. He is the grandson of legendary Baylor head coach Grant Teaff.

ZARNELL FITCH

Career Breakdown: Fitch, another onetime Texas High School Coaches Association member, is no stranger to the Big 12 as he previously served in a similar role at TCU prior to his arrival in Lubbock. Fitch has mentored 13 players who have earned All-Big 12 honors during his career, a list that features two of Texas Tech’s top returners in Tony Bradford Jr. and Jaylon Hutchings, who were one of only three FBS duos to record at least 30 pressures each in 2022.

Justin Johnson

Assistant Head Coach/Passing Game Coordinator/Receivers

Career Breakdown: Johnson is the lone new member to Joey McGuire’s staff as he arrives after spending the past three seasons at Baylor. Johnson oversaw the running backs room at both Baylor an then Houston, his alma mater, in 2019, but will return to coaching wide receivers with the Red Raiders. He previously was the wide receivers coach at Kansas in 2018, the same position he starred at during his own four-year career at Houston.

Defensive Coordinator

Career Breakdown: DeRuyter arrived in Lubbock having served as a defensive coordinator or a head coach in each of the past 21 seasons. In his first season with the Red Raiders, Texas Tech allowed less than 30 points per game for the first time since 2009 and ranked in the top 20 nationally for tackles for loss behind future NFL first-round selection Tyree Wilson. DeRuyter was previously the head coach at Fresno State from 2012-16.

Career Breakdown: Ah You mentored Tyree Wilson to first team All-America honors during his debut season on the Red Raider staff as Texas Tech, behind Wilson and the emergence of Jesiah Pierre, ranked in the top 20 nationally for tackles for loss. His hiring marked his return to the Big 12 where he previously starred at Oklahoma (2005-06) before enjoying a six-year NFL career with the St. Louis Rams.

Tight Ends

Career Breakdown: Cochran shifted over to coach the tight ends under Joey McGuire after spending the previous two seasons as the co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Austin Peay. Cochran, who was named in July 2022 to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football “40 under 40” coaches list, is a one-time THSCA member as he began his career in the prepranks at Lindale High School in East Texas.

Career Breakdown: Hamby returned to West Texas following one season at Western Kentucky where he, along with new offensive coordinator Zach Kittley, helped build one of the top offenses in the country. Hamby a Texas Tech alum, starred on the offensive line as a Red Raider where he helped lead Tech to four-consecutive bowl appearances, including two trips to the Cotton Bowl. He served as a graduate assistant for Tech from 2013-15.

MARCEL YATES

Passing Game Coordinator/Secondary

2nd Season at Tech

Game Day Location: Sideline

Career Breakdown: Yates, a former defensive coordinator at both Boise State and Arizona, mentored three All-Big 12 selections in 2022, including a second-team honoree in Malik Dunlap, as Texas Tech surrendered its fewest passing yards per game since 2014. Yates arrived in Lubbock from Oregon where he was the secondary and passing game coordinator during the 2021 season. He has worked alongside defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter each of the past three seasons at both Cal and Oregon.
