Success Story: Ford

CAVA Accelerates Product Development at Ford Innovation potential for more efficient production methods has a long tradition in automobile industry. The first moving assembly line was already introduced in 1913, at that time for the legendary Tin Lizzy. One century later both automobiles and fabrication have changed a lot. But production enhancement is still one of the main subjects. A good example is the implementation of the CAVA product suite from TechniaTranscat (previously Transcat PLM), which enables manufacturers to achieve tion of CAVA at Ford Motor a higher level of capability and flexibility in doing automated Company started in 2007 and checks to reach virtual homologations. echniaTranscat has excellent knowledge in process engineering for several industries such as automobile, for which the CAVA solution was developed. This process-related software system is based on CATIA and has been designed especially for the automotive industry to support the entire process chain concerning legal compliance by displaying the requisite industry standard information geometrically in CATIA. Recently CAVA was officially approved by a passenger car certification authority for a non EU/ECE based Technical Service. The virtual homologation, which is based on CAD data, was

certified with CAVA avoiding the need to build physical experimental assemblies. Ford Motor Company uses CAVA to become more efficient in its development process. The target was to reduce costs for the in-house solution enhancements and updates of standards and regulations as well as reaching a higher level of capability and flexibility concerning more tests and verifications. Therefore, the integration with current updates of the most relevant legal provisions and in this way creates a standard application. The implementa-

ware eventually went entirely productive worldwide one year later. Today, about 100 CAVA users around the world work with the software for global product management in the US, Brazil, Germany, UK, Turkey, Australia, China and India. It is rolled out in several departments. CAVA Vision for example is used for basic design, as there is a wide range of requirements for vehicle construction with which manufacturers have to comply. CAVA Safety helps in design engineering as safety usage is increasing massively and direct safety aspects for both passengers and pedestrians play a major role in vehicle development. Furthermore there are solutions like CAVA Tools for easy and fast calculation of a car silhouette, or CAVA Wiper to control standard fulfillment of windshield wipers via simulation and visualization. The menu operations of the CAVA products correspond to the V5 features in terms of handling, so that the ease of use via

intuitive graphical user interface leads to a great acceptance across all divisions and users. CAVA really works out with regard to reducing costs as a result of process enhancement. Therefore, it can be used in an early design stage throughout development and validation, which significantly saves time and resources in product development. As the homologation division receives reliable and validated data from product development the compliance of legal provisions is ensured throughout the whole process. So the procedures of system analyses and type approval tests become much more efficient. The driver’s field of vision for

instance can be computed exactly and virtually tested. Moreover, CAD evaluation quality improves substantially. The next round of development does not have to start from scratch. CAVA uses the power of the CATIA templates for example for vision analysis, so a formerly complicated application is very much simplified. This enables efficiency in developing unique tools for vision evaluation. It is evident that legal compliance in global product development processes will play an even more important role in terms of worldwide competitiveness in the future.

What is CAVA? CATIA solutions for car design and legal compliance “CATIA Automotive Extensions Vehicle Architecture” (CAVA) resulted from a joint project by TechniaTranscat and the German car manufacturers. International rules, norms and standards are provided during the entire design process - from the concept phase to the homologation. CAVA is a feature-based and associative technology integrated with CATIA V5 and V6 / 3DEXPERIENCE. Read more at www.techniatranscat.com/cava

BVB INNOVATE opts for 3DEXPERIENCE on Cloud

Major car maker in China standardizes on Q-Checker A China based joint venture of a European and a Chinese car maker purchased 30 Q-Checker for CATIA licenses in the fourth quarter of 2015. More than 100 OEMs and 1.500 suppliers are using Q-Checker. It is the market standard for Product Data Quality assurance in the Automotive and Aerospace, but used in many other industries as well. Wherever companies define modelling standards, methodologies or 3D Master initiatives, Q-Checker helps all designers in the extended enterprise to follow. “We are very excited about every new customer all around the world” states Paolo Santarelli, heading the TechniaTranscat Software development, “Along with our network of 50 partners we ensure the successful deployment and integration to CATIA and 3D Experience anywhere in the world,” he continues.

Fast growth often goes hand in hand with the pressure from large investments to handle projects. BVB INNOVATE has now had a taste of this, with their subsidiary company Nomadic Power recently having won the bidding procedure for an EU-funded project in the electromobility sector. This is a project that requires a CAD system. In order to avoid having to invest across the entire project scope, they have opted to use 3DEXPERIENCE on Cloud. The costs for this are reasonable, whilst the scope of the solution still covers all requirements in full. “With 3DEXPERIENCE in the cloud, we can ensure that all of our employees have access to the same database from anywhere. It also allows us to present our solutions professionally and comprehensively in any location,” says Dr. Manfred Baumgärtner, Managing Director of BVB INNOVATE GmbH. Lost in Translation? Compare CATIA V5 with SMG and JT easier I

n many industries CATIA data is translated into different neutral formats to provide downstream processes with the right data. For most processes, it is important to ensure no changes are caused by the conversion itself. Unacceptable differences must be revealed before the model is used in the following process step.

No conversion process is 100% accurate CAD conversion represents an action of transforming a relatively complex

mathematical description into a totally different one, trying to maintain the same outcome for the user and process but under the hood, things can get messy. While in many cases the converter is delivering exactly what we need to handle our tasks, it might become crucial for us to be that 99% sure that everything we have done in CATIA V5 is processed into the new format or the other way round. All elements shall be there, have the same measurements, nothing should be missing and nothing should have been added unintentionally - geometrically we want to have the models equally. How do you track unexpected changes after data conversion?

Sure, in many cases we just want to provide a JT or SMG model, plainly to give someone else the possibility of viewing the data but...xCompare comparison ...what if that someone actually takes decisions on that basis or uses the data in his process? ...what if we want to use the data for long term archiving and need to access the model years after we have faded out our current CAD system? Typically, we ask: Do my models meet the minimum quality and methodology requirements? Has a partner modified models from the last release interchanged, and what?

“xCompare keeps you ahead of changes,”

We need to follow legal requirements! Are those translated models really accurate? We require: - B-Rep must be transformed accurately (same measurements) - PMIs must be transformed correctly (same values) - Data must be ready for the downstream process - LODs in JT data must represent geometry of CATIA V5 model

Okay, but how will xCompare help me? xCompare V5 / SMG verifies the conversion process from CATIA V5 to SMG (3DVIA Composer). Multiple criteria of a CATIA V5 model are compared to an SMG model. For the comparison, xCom-

pare directly uses the models to analyze the features as well as the geometry. xCompare V5 / JT is used for the comparison of geometric data – potential nonconformities will be shown graphically. By using xCompare, comparisons of CATIA V5 B-Rep with JT B-Rep (JT or XT B-Rep), V5 B-Rep with individual JT LODs (Level of Detail) and V5 CGR data with JT LODs can be performed. The presentation of results is available in CATIA V5 and differences in geometry can be displayed.

compare apples with oranges. xCompare overcomes this known issue and directly accesses the native CATIA V5, SMG or JT data for the comparison. The data is not transformed whatsoever and the user never has to leave CATIA V5.

How it works? xCompare accesses CATIA V5 and SMG data through the respective API and the JT Data through TechniaTranscat’s own toolkit. The toolkit, developed on basis of JT ISO/PAS specification, is also used for viewing and checking JT data in the supplier package of the DAIMLER AG.

The advantage When comparing two models of different format, the approach of choice is to convert either both different formats in a third one or at least one into the other, to gain a basis for the comparison. This process unfortunately, is adding another one or two conversions to the bill - maximizing the chances that we may

somebody for a document. It is a totally different story when there are more than 200 and the number of products keeps increasing.” “We have been working with Excel documents. We have 10-15 for each product. They need to be updated and accessible. In the end, we were overwhelmed by Excel work.” The volume of documentation has risen in recent years as Jula has opened new stores, started in new countries, and increased product range, while the demands for sustainable production and traceability have added more demands on documentation.

Jula: “We want to drive faster” - PLM as a Tool for Expansion J

ula, a multi-billion kronor Swedish do-it-yourself retailer, was so bogged down in complicated documentation procedures that they were hindering company growth. The company has almost 14,000 products, and thousands of specific product details for different countries. It was becoming exceedingly difficult to keep track of everything. Speaking at TechniaTranscat’s (previously Technia) PLM Innovation Forum, Magnus Sigurd, Jula’s Business 10

Development Director said, “We had to do something. We defined our needs, and eventually saw that PLM and Technia [TechniaTranscat] could help us.” They started working together near the end of 2014.

How were you coping before you started the transition to PLM? “We are a fast-growing family company. It is one thing when you have 30 people in the office. You can always ask © Copyright TechniaTranscat AB 2016

What does PLM do? “PLM provides us with one source of information and a structure that forms the base for processes and automation. We want this work to be straightforward and simple. Time to market is very important us. We want to be able to drive faster.” About one year after signing with TechniaTranscat, Jula is scheduled to have replaced most Excel documentation with PLM.

Have you calculated a ROI on your PLM investment? “We’ve thought about that, but it’s hard to measure the improvements only in terms of money. We get structure, processes, scalability, and less frustration. We knew we had to do this to handle future growth. Judging from what I’ve seen so far and from my gut feeling, this is a very positive development.”

About Jula Jula, a family company founded in 1979, has become one of Sweden’s fastest growing companies. Turnover doubled between 2009 and 2014 to 5.4 billion kronor, and stores have been opened in Norway and Poland.

PLM for Retail

The Right Tools for the Right Retail Process F

or retail chains, the process of introducing a new product in stores can be overwhelming without the right tools. Finding an exciting product to sell is the easy part; navigating every step that’s necessary between ordering an item and getting it on the shelves is a lot more complicated. That’s why it’s so important to have software that can help guide staff members along the way, making sure that everything is done in the right order. The right tools can help eliminate missed deadlines, duplicated efforts, and a lot of frustration.

How to keep track of who is doing what? Adding a new item to your product line can be a big endeavor. After finding the right product, retail chains must also check its quality, get background on the supplier, calculate the right order size and create a marketing campaign. It’s a complicated process, and the only way to avoid mistakes is to make sure everyone knows exactly who should be doing what, and in what order. Each staff member must be able to take ownership of their own part of the process. But when a

company has its head office in Europe, a production center in Asia and a separate marketing division somewhere else, it can be extremely difficult to keep track of what has already been done and which step needs the most urgent attention. Especially when staff are still looking at a long to-do list in a simple spreadsheet and checking things off manually as they go along.

Getting everyone on the same page With the right PLM software, the whole process can be organized in a way that makes it more efficient, faster, and with less room for errors. The key is to have a tool that clearly highlights deadlines and important dates for each different product, with visual diagrams that show exactly what needs to be done at any given time. And by using a webbased system, everyone can get immediate updates that show what other people have done, and which steps still need to be taken. Staff members can still have their own to-do lists but can also see how work is progressing on the overall product line. And if someone accidentally

www.techniatranscat.com

skips a step, the system will tell them to back and complete it first.

PLM software makes the whole process simpler By using the ENOVIA software solutions from TechniaTranscat, retail companies can regain control of the entire process. From ordering a new product to getting it into the hands of the customer, everything is easier when everyone is on the same page. Make sure your staff can switch from being reactive and constantly putting out fires to being proactive and eliminating problems before they arise. The right tools are available, it’s only a matter of using them.

Value Components are ready to go offline

I

t is in TechniaTranscat’s DNA to listen closely to customers and understand what challenges they are experiencing. The dialogue is always ongoing, facilitated at the Customer Advisory Boards, and the yearly TechniaTranscat Products Day. The customers generally have a lot of input regarding how and in what direction the TechniaTranscat Products should be developed. Over the years the most common challenges has been performance & usability. But also topics like configurable integrations and mobile support has been raised by the customer community. “Lately we have received a lot of input regarding performance problems related to high latency and/or poor bandwidth. It is also common that customers struggle with server side performance where big queries takes too long time to evaluate before even sending it to the client. Another area is user acceptance, people today are used to applications

like Facebook and they expect the same modern look and feel and intuitive experience working with PLM,” says Magnus Falkman, Director of Product Development at TechniaTranscat. TechniaTranscat did two major releases of Value Components during the autumn 2015. The new version contains exciting features like offline support of TVC Mobile. Other large improvements are to better facilitate collaboration in the application and most importantly great progress on the modernization of the current product portfolio. “The fact that any users now are able to bring data anywhere and create data offline using a handheld device is a revolution. This is something we have talked about for many years, finally we have realized the dream,“ says Magnus.

Integration

Cost Efficient and Reliable Integrations - Why is a solid integration solution so important?

E

fficient and reliable communication between enterprise systems is vital and can save companies enormous amounts of money. For example, if there is a problem with a product component, you need to correct it and rely on that the change is properly communicated and dealt with. A reliable integration ensures that the same problem doesn’t sneak into yet another product batch that drives unnecessary cost downstream.

What is the common integration use cases with PLM? It is common to integrate PLM with virtually any downstream system, most commonly Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). You can integrate it directly, or via an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). For example, it can be used to communicate product changes to the factory

floor, publish product data to be used in digital product catalogues and performing otherwise time-consuming tasks, like converting documents into PDFs.

What is the difference between a good and bad integration solution? A good integration solution is reliable, scales well and ensures data quality in downstream systems by keeping track of all integration events. All events should be logged and easily accessible for statistics and deviation follow up purposes.

In cases where security aspects and protection of core business IP is vital, secure data transfer must be possible. A good solution stays robust and stable even during heavy workloads. Best practices using common integration technologies should be built in and allow for integration setup without dependency on specific individuals. General basic competencies should be enough and allow to focus on the content, not the details of the integration protocol used. A bad solution has none of these qualities, but is clunky, next to impossi-

ble for new individuals to take over and maintain without significant instructions and handover from the author. A bad solution does not separate between content and technology. Simply switching from one protocol to another becomes a bigger task with a risk of affecting the whole solution. To detect deviations, administrators have to search through various logs and in order to fix problems information from many different places is needed. Deviations might pass unnoticed and fixes will most probably be based on incomplete information or not understanding the full picture resulting in data mismatch between systems driving unnecessary cost.

tomers can manage all common incoming and outgoing integrations through simple configurations. T

he sophisticated FACC lightweight solutions allow for safety and for the reduction of weight but also for comfort and reduction of noise in passenger, transport and business aircrafts as well as in helicopters. For more than 10 years, FACC has successfully developed and designed these highly complex composite components for the aviation industry by using solutions made by TechniaTranscat (previously Transcat PLM) and Dassault Systèmes. CATIA is one of the standard software solutions for virtual product development in the aviation industry. An essential reason for the decision to cooperate with TechniaTranscat as a partner in development and design was its in-house software development department and its solutions, the continuity for a long-term cooperation, the international presence and the short geographical distance to FACC. Additionally, TechniaTranscat is the market leader in the distribution of Dassault Systèmes solutions and can therefore offer the appropriate portfolio based on experience, new technology and innovation. TechniaTranscat are applied on the premises of FACC in various departments and fields. myPLM, for example, provides

Petra Sundström, Husqvarna:

With IoT, don’t adopt a strategy of wait and see

S

peaking at TechniaTranscat’s PLM Innovation Forum, Sundström said, “We don’t know exactly how and when, but we know it will happen based on technical developments and financial benefits. Therefore, it is extremely important that we take the initiative and move ahead.”

Why not wait and see what works? “To wait and keep talking about future business models is a dangerous course of action: We must take a more experimental path and place the technical foundations so that we and our customers can work and see how we can shape this development together.”

“IoT is a technology that will completely transform our industry.” This bold prediction was made by Petra Sundström, Senior Project Manager of the Internet of Things project of the Husqvarna Group, “We must take a more an international leader in construction, experimental path and forestry, consumer gardening as well as place the technical founcommercial lawn and gardening products and tools. dations so that we and

our customers can work and see how we can shape this development together.”

What kind of IoT systems are you envisioning for the outdoors?

gether in a system service solution. Another system service that we offer for the more professional customer is the Husqvarna Fleet Service program where smart sensors on products will help professional landscapers to optimize and manage their fleet of products and tools.”

How is PLM part of the picture? “IoT is not only a part of product development. It is also a technology that can assist PLM in general in terms of connecting products that are able to ‘talk’ and can be tracked throughout the full life-cycle of the product.”

What are the major obstacles for the development of IoT? Generally speaking, we need common standards. Another hurdle is attitude. It is necessary to understand that we are entering a world of new infrastructures. Kodak is a classic example of not understanding the impact of new technology on changing the infrastructure at large, on people acquiring new habits, and on new business opportunities. For instance, Kodak built kiosks where you could print your digital photos at a time when people found it more convenient to share photos as digital files.

3DEXPERIENCE & Trends in the Digital Era - A conversation with Bertrand Sicot, Dassault Systèmes’ Senior VP, 3DS Value Solutions Dassault Systèmes’ new Senior Vice President of the 3DS Value Solutions, Bertrand Sicot, has a long record as a champion in international sales. In his new role, he is responsible for the company’s worldwide strategy for the indirect sales network of over 500 partners in 36 countries. Jonas Gejer, CEO of TechniaTranscat, sat down with Bertrand Sicot to learn more about his thoughts on the future, benefits of the new strategy, changes in the partner landscape, and opportunities with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

www.techniatranscat.com

21

Trends

Jonas Gejer: You have worked many years in the US, what do you see as the key difference in this market compared to Europe? Bertrand Sicot: That is a very good question. In fact, a very interesting question indeed. In my opinion, if we try to compare the North American market with the European market, the main difference is the speed when it comes to adopting new technologies. In North America, they can adopt new technologies very fast because changing is in their DNA. It is no issue to change and change again. In Europe, the mindset is much more technically driven, and before we change, we want to see all the details. In North America they first jump into the water, and then they know if they can swim, if you understand what I mean. Companies can adopt new technologies really fast, and then change it to another and another. In Europe, we are much slower, but when we do change, we know why we are doing it, and we know that we will stay with it for a long time. JG: What key trends do you see in the market for the coming years? BS: The first one is mobility. It is everywhere now. Mobility is an important part of our personal lives, and has also become an important part of our professional lives too. If you look around, how many people are coming to the

22

office with different devices like laptops, PDA’s and tablets? And the more I see customers in the engineering offices, the more I see also that trend. For us, that means we need to do valuable, meaningful applications for these devices, adjusting the capabilities of the application to the capabilities of the device. Obviously, you do not use a tablet as you use your desktop computer. The second trend is clearly the cloud. The customers need to be able to login into applications wherever they are, and the cloud enables that. JG: What is your view on the merger between Technia and Transcat? BS: I am very excited about the merger. I see two very strong companies that are very complementary when it comes to skills, customer profiles, and also company culture. I know that the Swedish way of looking at things differs from the German way but I believe in richness in the cultural merger. I am also convinced that if you do it right, you can leverage values from both cultures, and it will be very valuable for the customers you are serving, and also for Dassault Systèmes.

“Companies can adopt new technologies really fast, and then change it to another and another,”

Trends

So, I am very positive about the merger, and it gives a big signal of trust from your group being willing to invest significantly in other countries. It is one thing to buy a company in the same country you are operating, or in the Nordics. It is a different thing to go as far as Germany, and it is a very positive sign. JG: DS is traditionally very strong in core industries such as Automotive, Machinery and Aerospace – how do you see the growth in industries like Life Sciences, Retail and High Tech? BS: I see a very strong business opportunity, but one thing is clear to me - if you want to be successful in these new industries, we need to hire people with different backgrounds than the people we have in our teams today. By that I mean that our solutions have been successfully adopted to automotive, aerospace, and industrial equipment industries only because they is related to mechanical engineering. The people we have in our teams have mechanical background, and they know what they are talking about. When working with life science or high tech companies, we have to have people who know about electronics, life science and chemistry etc. This is a

challenge we need to address together, and make sure that we will bring onboard talents that have skills and profiles we are not used to, which I think is interesting because I am curious by nature. I am also convinced that everything starts with people. When it comes to the solutions, I see that we start aiming at good success in new industries. Now the challenge for us is to replicate. We will do one proof of concept or an example of something, and it only will be sustainable when we can replicate it. JG: You launched a new strategy for the Value Solutions Partners. Could you please elaborate on the benefits this program will bring for the end customers? BS: The benefits it will bring to our end customers will be measured in customer satisfaction. The quality of the solutions we deliver, the speed at which we deliver and so on will be measured in customer satisfaction. I believe in simplicity, and everything we can simplify will improve the perceived value of a product, and in that way we interact with the partners. JG: The 3DEXPERIENCE platform is very broad and comprehensive, what are the top 3 benefits with the new plat-

form for our customers? BS: First of all, 3DEXPERIENCE platform is a business platform for companies and enterprises. Secondly, it is a solution that will connect the people, the data, the solution, and also the ideas together. It is really connecting people across all levels in a company, and not only the people in the product design in the engineering department. Thirdly, it is an innovation platform that will help people in a single and intuitive environment to innovate. When you have the platform, you can connect everything to it. It is embracing the whole company. JG: If you look into the crystal ball and think about our industry 10 years from now, what would be the key transformations? BS: I’m convinced – everything will be digital. The customer interaction will be digital, you will see a product before it exists; you will be even able to experience it before it exists and so on. So this is what I mean with digital. The world is moving so fast, the technologies are moving so fast, that this can happen even sooner than 10 years from now.

“I’m convinced – everything will be digital,”

Reliable 3D data for the 3D enterprise Writer: Martin Nölle Martin has more than 20 years of experience in PLM software and joined TechniaTranscat in 2003. Currently he is managing the global sales team at TechniaTranscat Software for CATIA and JT.

T

he majority of product design already takes place in 3D CAD systems. The data is reused in various formats in follow-up processes and in many software applications. Drawings, usually derived from 3D, are currently still necessary for the overall development process. Initiated by automotive and aircraft manufacturers, a new trend is saturating in all industries: the use of 3D data for all users and processes. These include drawing-less manufacturing processes, spare parts catalogues, repair instructions and the closely associated long-term archiving of 3D data. These initiatives are currently being implemented in the industry under terms like “3D Master” and “Model-Based Definition”.

The right format CAD functions enable the realisation of complex design. However, their usage requires constant training. Allowing the entire enterprise to use 3D means that the systems implemented must be extremely simple to use. Archiving 3D data, which, depending on the industry, can require a period of up to 100 years, is unthinkable in its generic formats. One approach to meet these challenges are neutral formats.

3D is becoming available everywhere in the company. Purchasers see in 3D what they buy. Mobile devices provide assembling animations on the shop floor. Customers select spare parts from 3D catalogs, where they can spin and view 3D data from all angles. Neutral formats such as JT and STEP support this trend towards a drawing-less product development process - and make it easier! Selecting a format for a company and all its development partners is not an easy task. Beside the guaranteed future of the format, the technological quality also is crucial as well. Companies and associations that work with 3D-neutral formats can provide guidance in the process: In the ‘Long-Term Archiving and Retrieval’ (LOTAR) project initiated by the aviation industry, the ‘Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data’

Lite3D provides the right content and quality Originally initiated by Daimler, TechniaTranscat has developed a portfolio for neutral 3D data, today focussing on JT, but open to support other formats as well. The Lite3D product family contains: ● Viewing - Desktop and web based viewer for JT and TIF - free of charge in its base version ● Data clearing – Model simplification for better performance and IP protection ● Quality checking – Identifying defects in file structure and geometry ● Revision comparison and derivative validation – Identifying differences between two model revisions.

“With Lite3D we help customers to establish 3D as an affordable common collaboration language beyond engineering throughout the extended enterprise,”

24

(STEP) plays an important role. At the same time the use of ‘Jupiter Tessellation’ (JT) is common in the automotive industry. The ProSTEP iViP Association runs projects on the industrialization of ‘Jupiter Tessellation’ (JT), which is an ISO standard certified format now.

The best ingredients for successful learning F

or more than 30 years TechniaTranscat has been teaching PLM expertise in practice-based courses. We have continued to adapt our teaching methods and content to match both developments within the industry and trends in technology. Thus, web-based training courses now form a core component of our current range of courses. In our blended learning concept, the benefits of online learning (visualization, individual learning, flexible time and location, additional access to information) are utilized in an optimum combination with the benefits of traditional classroom-based education (direct contact, formation of groups, synchronized

locations and time). Participants can, for example, use a basic online course to prepare themselves for the content of a subsequent classroom-based course in order to make sure they are at the same knowledge level as other course participants. Or they can consolidate what they have learned in a workshop by

Success Story: Parker Hannifin

How a chance conversation led to a committed, long-term partnership

About Parker Hannifin With annual sales exceeding $13 billion in fiscal year 2014, Parker Hannifin is the world’s leading diversified manufacturer of motion and control technologies and systems, providing precision-engineered solutions for a wide variety of mobile, industrial and aerospace markets. The company employs 57,500 people in 50 countries around the world.

P

arker Hannifin, a global engineering firm specialized in motion and control technologies, was looking for a vendor that could help them enhance their Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) ENOVIA space. For Parker, a multi-billion-dollar corporation with more than 8,500 ENOVIA licenses worldwide, it was crucial to have a user-friendly PLM environment that could ensure efficiency and transparency. ”The ease of use was the most important issue users were complaining about. It cost us time and tied up valuable company resources, which in turn cost us money,” Dave Bosworth, Director Enterprise Systems, Engineering, at Parker, recalls.

www.techniatranscat.com

”Technia’s [TechniaTranscat’s] agility and flexibility is what got the company through our front door, and it’s those things that will keep them the No. 1 position for us,” Dave Bosworth, Director Enterprise Systems, Engineering, Parker Hannifin Corporation, Cleveland, Ohio.

Solution: While attending the Dassault Systèmes Customer Conference in 2010, Parker came into contact with TechniaTranscat (previously Technia) whose thoughts on how to improve the group’s ENOVIA space prompted Parker to send two representatives to the TechniaTranscat Innovation Forum in Stockholm to learn more. ”We were very impressed by what we saw and quickly realized that this was not just another contractor selling services, but that it had a whole portfolio of products, including Value Components that could make things a lot better for us. So we decided to try them out on a smaller scale.”

27

Success Story: Parker Hannifin

As a first test, TechniaTranscat was tasked with training over a thousand of Parker’s European ENOVIA users. The project was a success, and resulted in TechniaTranscat being awarded yet another mission: equipping Parker with a Single Sign-On capability; a user authentification process that allows users to access multiple applications by logging in just once. ”Technia [TechniaTranscat] did a fantastic job!” Dave Bosworth says, noting that the project cemented Parker’s confidence in TechniaTranscat. In 2013, the two companies entered a partnership agreement under which TechniaTranscat became Parker’s lead ENOVIA service provider. It also became responsible for ENOVIA training and customized out-of-the-box software solutions. Today, Parker uses a full suite of TVC modules, with three of them – Structure

Browser, File Manager and Engineering Desktop for Graphical Reporting – having been deployed in both of Parker’s Industrial and Aerospace businesses. Separately, Industrial uses the Grid Browser, and Aero uses the XBOM, the ECO Manager and the MCAD, all products in the Value Components suite. The engineering unit has also implemented the Value Component Search Optimizer.

Results: Since working with TechniaTranscat, Parker’s ENOVIA user experience has improved dramatically. ”Some divisions say it has changed their lives,” Dave Bosworth says, pointing especially to the search optimizer and reporting capabilities. To illustrate some of the benefits of TechniaTranscat’s products, Parker provided statistics of the impact on the company’s ECR/ECO pro-

cess after using one of TechniaTranscat’s Value Components for just a couple of weeks in 2015. Going forward, Parker plans a company-wide roll-out of a host of new products in its ENOVIA space, including Technical Compliance, Material Compliance and Requirement Management. TechniaTranscat, which he describes as an extremely agile and flexible supplier, will be Parker’s primary partner on that journey. ”Technia [TechniaTranscat] has proven two things to us over the past four years. Firstly, it’s extremely competitive on price, so I don’t need to worry about being overcharged. And secondly, their technical expertise is acknowledged by everyone so I know I’m getting the best technical talent out there.”

PLM Services

Custom designed applications take PLM software to a new level Leading PLM software like CATIA and ENOVIA come packed with a host of standard features that meet the biggest needs of most businesses. But every company has its own unique processes, and sometimes customized solutions can help further boost productivity for an individual manufacturer.

A Writer: Jens Potthoff Jens has more than 18 years of experience in PLM software, specifically in the development of add-on applications for CATIA. He currently works as Department Manager for SW R&D, responsible for the development of CAD related TechniaTranscat software. The team is working on standard products as well as customer specific applications.

ll individual needs aren’t always met by out-of-the-box solutions. That’s why our Research & Development department includes a dedicated team of more than 35 developers who specialize in custom specific projects for CATIA alone. By working closely with our customers, we can help identify solutions to individual problems – and create the software that automatically implements them. Whether it’s a smaller issue like generating automatic Powerpoint presentations for certain data or bigger problems involving complex calculations like the overlapping of door seals in a car or even ray tracing for light simulation - we have the expertise and equipment to give customers what they want.

Get the full picture of what PLM software can do Our applications allow you to bring your own processes into CATIA and ENOVIA, making sure we are the only PLM service provider you need. We have years of experience working with the software

from Dassault Systèmes, and can give you the full picture of what is possible to accomplish with the suites we offer. Many companies are already taking advantage of these possibilities. Some of Germany’s top automotive companies are using customized CATIA applications to calculate complex processes for how to put together certain car parts. And if we find that the requested solution could serve a broader market, we can even turn it into a standard product. For example, our collaboration with the German car manufacturers resulted in the CAVA software for Automotive Extensions. By turning a customized application into a standard product, even the original client benefits by saving money in the long term.

Understand the process None of this is possible without a partner who truly understands your needs. A close collaboration is necessary to make sure that the finished application actually meets the exact specifications of the request. We have developed applications for CATIA for more than 20 years, meaning our developers have a full understanding of both the software and the customization process and we can help customers from all around the world. Our customers speak directly to our developers, eliminating the risk for misunderstandings and making sure you get the exact solution you asked for. For TechniaTranscat, this is about creating meaningful long-term partnerships with our clients. Only a company that understands your processes can create the applications to make them more efficient.

Simulation

I

f you’re able to, for example, do your FEM-analysis (Finite Element Method) already at an early stage of a project and perform analysis directly on your master reference model in the CAD system you’re working in, many unnecessary and time-consuming steps could be skipped. And as we all know, time is money.

Why are simulations often so time-consuming? About 50 percent of a design simulation specialist’s time is spent on just preparing a simulation; converting the geometry to fit different file types, exporting those calculations to an external system, meshing parameters, and defining restraints and loads. Depending on the complexity of the design this pre-process can take days, or even weeks.

analysis tool, you’re able to cut out all the in-between steps – where a design can be processed for simulation in just a few hours. First of all, this allows the designer to be able to test an idea very early on in a project, enabling them to also try out many different variants of a design and make fast and knowledgeable decisions. Secondly, the process of preparing a simulation becomes a whole lot easier and more accessible - designers can essentially set up some of the more uncomplicated simulations on their own since Boundary conditions are applied directly to the geometry. This means that new variants can easily be tested and the simulation specialists, who normally handle all the pre-simulation processing, can focus more on the complicated projects. Finally, the designer will have the results back much faster to be able to get on with the post-processing. They don’t risk spending valuable time waiting to know what modifications they need to make.

Software for design and simulation The CATIA V5 Analysis is scalable and provides realistic design simulation capability within the CATIA design environment, whether it’s for a designer FEM, engineer FEM or specialist FEM. This means that there are no geometry transfers to be done, and there are no gateway problems, saving huge amounts of time. Once a simulation has been programmed, the analysis can be saved and be used as an analysis template where the geometry is easily modified. The accessibility also opens for the designers themselves to set up simulation tests, allowing them to quickly analyze the sustainability of their designs and make relevant modifications – without having to call in a specialist for help. The development cycles are shortened, more geometry variants can be analyzed and compared and the results come back faster. The post-processing is also carried out within the CAD environment.

How could you accelerate the design simulation process? If you can do the simulation already in your CAD system, via an integrated

Success Story: TUI Nordic

How PLM Changed the Charter Travel Business Jessica Enbacka, Information Technology Director at the charter travel company TUI Nordic, said that PLM has enabled her company to personalize travel products down to minute details and made it easier to create new products.

“W

e can do things that were impossible before,” said Enbacka who was a speaker on the subject “Two years after the implementation of PLM” at TechniaTranscat’s PLM Innovation Forum in Stockholm. TUI Nordic specializes in providing tailor-made package tours to destinations worldwide. Traditionally, package tours have been pretty straightforward with little room to accommodate individual demands.

“Our customers wanted travel arrangements that were more personalized travel than we could provide with our previous system.” Jessica Enbacka, Information Technology Director, TUI Nordic

How has PLM changed this practice? “We have 36 points of departure in the Nordic area. We seek out suitable hotels, look for special deals, arrange transfers without delays, match activities with customer preferences, and so on. In short, we can provide highly complicated and specialized products.

How does PLM help? “PLM provides a structure for scattered bits and pieces of information. In the past, our travel products were planned and produced in several different systems, one system for every little piece in the puzzle. We had different

sources of information and the products were not connected to one another. Now, we have one source of information where we have all the products under the same roof. “We can connect travel products to each other and combine them as we like. We can send triggers to consuming systems and messages to colleagues around the world. Having one source of information also allows us to create advanced planning tools. “Another advantage is that we can recycle information in the database. It eliminates extra work and reduces errors,

which is a risk when staffers work with different versions of information.”

Why did you look at PLM in the first place? It is not typically a system for the travel industry. “PLM is used by all kinds of industries, but we were the first in the travel industry. Our customers wanted travel arrangements that were more personalized travel than we could provide with our previous system. Technia [TechniaTranscat] showed us that PLM can be used to customize travel. Together with Technia [TechniaTranscat] we keep developing our system.”

The Google Way to Increased Innovation – an Interview with Annika Steiber

Innovation experts love to make lists of the world’s most innovative companies, and we love to read them. But what really makes a company innovative? We recently had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Annika Steiber, who is one of the few researchers who have studied Google and its management model for innovation. She shared her thoughts and the results of her findings with us, and how these can help companies to become innovative.

I

n today’s fast-changing industries, companies face two alternatives – to innovate or die. Obviously, the second alternative is not to prefer, and at the same time, realizing how hard it is to become the next “Google”, can be quite overwhelming. So, what can you do to become more innovative and survive? Just copy and paste somebody else’s way of doing? According to Annika Steiber, that is not the right answer to the question. “You should always create your own model for innovation,” she states. She is probably right. Still, understanding and learning from other leading companies and how they have succeeded being innovative, can help you to develop a model of innovation that is just right for you.

6 key characteristics of a high innovation company How the leading companies like Google have developed best practices in leadership, corporate culture, structure and processes, is based on a new set of management principles according to Annika Steiber. These six management principles characterize successful compa-

34

nies in fast changing industries. “If we start with the most important one, which I think is the people centric approach. These companies, they want entrepreneurs, they want really smart people, and they want to attract them and bring them in. They design the company, and the leadership after that kind of talents,” says Annika Steiber. “Secondly, they are ambidextrous. They are able to do really efficient core business, they are industrialized, in parallel with driving successful new innovation to the market over and over again. That will require a parallel structure which is hard to create in reality,” Annika explains. “Thirdly, these companies are not scared to disrupt themselves. They are dynamic in that sense that they are actively seeking what is going on, trends, and then bring those insights in, and reallocate their resources. This is what I call dynamic capability,” Annika says.

“The fourth thing which is connected to the dynamic capability is openness. These companies are very well tapped into the innovation ecosystem, not only to local but also to international. They are well aware of companies which are excellent in their area and they try to collaborate with, invest in, or acquire these companies,” Annika explains. The fifth management principle is related to the company culture. “They have a very strong culture of innovation. They embed innovation in everything they do, they live and breathe innovation, and something Annika calls a system approach to innovation. It is the engine, the key for their survival, and for their existence,” Annika says. “The sixth principle is related to how agile their organization is. Their mentality is more or less to be prepared to change all the time. For some companies this means that they work more project

oriented, e.g. work with strategically important things for the company in one project, and when that project is finished the employees might work with something completely different. You are very open to that kind of changes all the time. So the people do what is important for the company, not what they are employed for at a fixed point in time,” Annika explains.

to do it. This is the same thing, you will invest and learn how to manage innovation. It will take years to be very skillful in this,” she says.

Individuals who make difference The responsibility for innovation lies on different levels in the company. “Innovation is more or less always driven from the bottom up. It’s never from the top. What the top can do is to set some directions, some innovation domains. For example if the management say they want to go mobile and they do not know how, but they need to find innovations, it could be a new business model or just a new consumer interface. The individual is the key. On the other hand the management is also the key - in order to set the demand for innovation. So the individual is the supply, the source of innovation, the supply mechanism of innovation and top management would be the demand mecha-

How do you start an innovation program? Innovation work can be started on a smaller scale. “I recommend to start with some innovation pilots and actually learn how to do innovation work. Based on some pilots, check how the organization reacts and try to locate the problems in the organization that are hindering innovation. By doing that you will hopefully create success, buzz and lot of engagement around this. To build an innovation capability is a learning process, you start small and scale over time,” Annika explains. Investments in innovation work does not differ from any other business investments. “It is like investing in a new product area or technology, you have to do it for many years, and you learn how

nism of innovation,” Annika explains. People who can drive innovation are quite easy to spot. “I have been working in companies in many years and I could easily say exactly which 10 persons made the difference. I think that any company can do that. I am actually quite shocked by how few companies have actively been identifying these persons, and actively supported them to create new cool things that could have impact on new business and customers. Every company has a pool of entrepreneurial talent already and they could capitalize better on these persons. Another problem is that when they look at the CV of a true entrepreneur, the HR people cannot handle that kind of CV because it is too far from the traditional, standard CVs they are looking for. They perceive that it is a big risk for them to invest in these entrepreneurial people because they might not want to follow the traditional rules and routines of a larger company,” Annika states.
