f you’re a frequent traveller or planning your first visit to the Kruger National Park, this is the issue for you. The Retreat team visited various towns en route to Kruger, and we showcase the best attractions, activities and accommodation in Sabie, Hazyview, Hoedspruit, Tzaneen, Polokwane and Modimolle. There is definitely more to a trip to the Kruger than just the Kruger. Closer to Gauteng we visited the Muldersdrift area for the traveller opting not to take on the long road. Located just 30 minutes from Pretoria or Johannesburg, this area offers day retreats, weekend retreats and is also perfectly located as a conference and wedding destination.

4 Letters Dear Retr eat W in n i n g H a p py S nap & L ett er

Dear Editor, I visited Pretoria recently and came across the Retreat magazine at Menlyn Mall. I loved it and had to bring a copy back home with me. I also thought of showcasing my home as I am an Cape Townian. This picture was taken when I was hiking up Table Mountain at the beginning of the year. The scenery and tranquility was great. Just listening to yourself and nature and getting away from all the noise and gelling close to nature. Overlooking the sea and the view of the mountain was just breathtaking and seeing houses of the “lucky” ones who get to live close to nature. This was one of my 2010 highlights and this picture reminds me of that. Pearl Peter

5 Letters Dear Retr eat Hi Retreat, Fascinated by Zebra tracks, all the teens draw near to Dewald who explains how to distinguish Zebra tracks from the other footprints near a salt lick on Doornkloof. Doornkloof is the game farm of the Voortrekkers between Kroonstad and Lindley, and is used for youth camps. The farm is significant because it’s the original farm of Sarel Cilliers and and it’s a Historical Landmark as the house is still standing. Good rains made the field lush and green. This photo was taken of the Grade nines attending a camp on the farm, while hiking on Sunday afternoon. Vian Roos

Hey Retreat, This picture was taken on my recent visit to Nelspruit. The Mbombela stadium with its giraffe pillars calls you from a distance as you come into the capital of Mpumalanga. I answered its call – and I was lucky ’cause the stadium is open for tours. This was just few days before the official opening of the stadium by Bafana Bafana and Thailand. Then and there I knew that going to Mpumalanga for the 2010 Fifa World Cup games will be fantastic, and I concluded that indeed South Africa was ready for the historic, mammoth and greatest football tournament in the world. Joseph Peter Kgomo Indeed, and we certainly pulled it off majestically!

Hi Retreat, I went on a birthday break with my kids to the Ranch Protea Hotel in Limpopo. It was a journey of self-discovery, enjoyment and reconnection with nature. Kgomotso Makobe

Sabie The sleepy town of Sabie, nestled in a forested valley on the escarpment of the Drakensberg in Mpumalanga, is a sight to behold. abie’s fate was decided during a hunting expedition in 1871 when a stray bullet struck a rock face and revealed a glint of gold, signalling the start of the gold rush to the area. The first inhabitants however, were the San or Bushmen people, as can be seen from cave paintings discovered in the area. The Sabie River was teeming with crocodiles at the time, and there are still crocodile farms in the area. The Shangaan people called the river uluSaba, meaning ‘the river of fear’, and this is where the name “Sabie” originated from years later. The town today is much more relaxed than in the heydays of the gold rush, and the area around Sabie has been transformed into one of the largest man-made forests in the world, truly a beautiful sight next to the majestic mountains. The sleepy and friendly nature of the town makes itself apparent with all sorts of curio shops and restaurants lining the main street. As far as activities go, a variety of walks and hiking trails are available while some spectacular natural waterfalls offer countless photo opportunities. Some of the waterfalls that can be found around Sabie, include the beautiful Bridal Falls, Horseshoe, Lone Creek and Mac Mac waterfalls. The town is also known as the place where the famous Jock of the Bushveld story originated from. Sir Percy Fitzpatrick’s book tells about the amazing adventures he and Jock shared in and around the Sabie area. With its panoramic views and friendly inhabitants, Sabie is a must see if you’re in the area.

Sabi Sands Elephant Whispers Elephant Whispers is an Elephant interac on venue located on the banks of the Sabie River, just a few minutes’ drive outside Hazyview.

f you’re feeling in the mood for a close encounter of the wild kind, Elephant Whispers is the perfect place. Here guests are treated to one-on-one interactions with one of nature’s most amazing creatures. The facility has six tame elephants in total, from the massive six ton Tembo to tiny Lindiwe, each has its own unique personality. Rescued from planned culling, the elephants found a new home at Elephant Whispers where they now serve as ambassadors for their kind. One of the most valuable aspects of the tour was the information we gained about elephants, and how strangely similar they are to us. The experience of touching an elephant, feeling its rough skin, feeding it nuts through its trunk and even standing between its front legs for a photo is something amazing and really gives one an added respect for these gentle giants. Guests can choose to do the elephant interaction and/or safari, both definitely worth it. The view from the back of an elephant is spectacular and feeling the lopsided walk of these massive creatures is truly a magical experience. The famous Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve with its beau ful scenery and wide variety of wildlife is the perfect place to go for the tradi onal African bush safari.

he reserve houses the big five and is especially known for its leopard sightings. These majestic and elusive cats aren’t frequently seen in the wild, but for some reason Sabi Sands seems to be an exception, like we found out first-hand. As we were idling around at camp a call came in from one of the rangers that they had spotted a leopard. We quickly jumped into our squeaky Land Rover and set off in pursuit. Amazingly, we were able to get within two metres of this impressive cat as he was stalking a herd of some 300 buffalo crossing the road nearby. The night drives are especially memorable comprising a four hour game drive with sundowners and dinner in a traditional African boma afterwards. The highly trained rangers were able to supply us with some amazing photography opportunities and we were able to enjoy our sundowners next to a watering hole while buffalo and rhino came by to quench their thirsts mere metres from where we were standing. It’s easy to see why Sabi Sands is one of the most popular reserves in the country, delivering unparalleled levels of game viewing opportunities. T Hoedspruit The small town of Hoedspruit is situated in the majes c Limpopo lowveld a stone’s throw away from the Kruger Na onal Park. t is said that the town got its name when, after a gruelling trek, an exhausted pioneer removed his hat and threw it into the Sandspruit River. He decided to stay and the town became known as Hoedspruit. Like most of the lowveld towns, Hoedspruit has a relaxed atmosphere and friendly locals, a perfect stop if you need a break from the urban grind. The town is also famous in part for the Hoedspruit Air Force Base and the town’s Eastgate Airport has recently been earmarked to be upgraded into an international airport, which will make the area even more accessible in the future.

Moholoholo Endangered Species Centre The Moholoholo endangered species centre, situated 30 km outside Hoedspruit, is one of the most inspiring wildlife centres we’ve ever visited. Established in 1992 the day-to-day running of the centre is undertaken by wildlife enthusiast and conserva onist, Brian Jones. ildlife from all over the country are brought to the centre in the hopes of being rehabilitated and re-released back into the wild. When the extent of an animal’s injuries or other factors prohibits the animal from being returned to the wild, they are cared for at the centre and serve as ambassadors for their kind. Among the many animals now housed at the centre are lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dogs, black rhino, hyena and several species of birds.

W

The escape artist One of the centre’s more eccentric inhabitants is a honey badger that is such a skilled escape artist it would make Houdini turn green. A non-profit organisation where the entrance fees all go back into the feeding of the animals and up keeping of their cages, donations are always welcome and go directly into specific vital projects. A volunteer program also exists where volunteers can stay at the camp for between 1 to 12 weeks, learning about wildlife and the African bush while taking care of the centre’s wild residents. The centre is also focused on breeding, with successful breeding programs for crowned eagle and serval, among others, having been conducted in the past. ituated in the heart of the Limpopo province in the foothills of the Wolkberg mountains, Tzaneen is a gem of a town, perfect for that breakaway holiday. The name originated from the Sotho word ‘tsaneng’, meaning ‘come together’. The town sports a high rainfall rate and as such the area is surrounded by a veritable treasure trove of indigenous flowers and trees, leading to some nicknaming it the ‘garden town’. Guest houses, lodges, game farms and backpackers dot the countryside in and around the town offering visitors a wide variety of choices. A wonderful sight to see in the area is the Modjadji Nature Reserve which contains one of the most fascinating populations of plants in South Africa. The reserve houses the largest concentration of a single cycad species in the world, the Modjadji cycad. These plants form an ancient natural forest which can be viewed in its unspoilt state thanks to strict protection by the succeeding generations of Modjadji (rain queens), whose tribe inhabits the area. If you enjoy plant life but would also appreciate a delicious cold beer, you can do both by heading over to the Sunland ‘Big Baobab’ pub. This massive boabab is the widest of its species in the world, carbon dated to be around 6000 years old. A large part of its fame comes not from its size though, but from the fact that there is a pub situated inside the tree. Able to accommodate up to 50 patrons complete with barstools, dartboard, music and a natural fridge, this may just be the most unique spot to enjoy a cold one. For an intimate wildlife encounter, Mowana Game Farm is the place to be. The farm also sports its own resident hippo, named Hippie, who has been hand raised after being found alone in the bush at a very young age. Hippie resides in one of the dams on the farm and eagerly welcomes visitors. Call Mowana lodge on 015-304-3333.

olokwane, formerly known as Pietersburg, is the capital city of the Limpopo province. The largest destination in our guide, Polokwane is recognised as a city. With enough amenities to keep anyone busy, Polokwane is also centrally located with many lodges and game reserves in close proximity. It’s also the last major city before one crosses into Botswana or Zimbabwe, making it a popular hub. One of the first things you’ll see when approaching the town is the impressive new Peter Mokaba soccer stadium. Inspired by the Baobab tree the stadium is supported by giant trunk-like structures giving it an impressive and genuinely African look. The Modimolle museum, previous residence of old prime minister JG Strijdom, also sports a rich and fascinating display. The Lapalala game reserve is a beautiful and very popular attraction in the area. The reserve has a heavy focus on conservation and today sports populations of the heavily endangered black rhino, sable, roan and tsessebe antelope, making it one of the last remaining places where one can view these animals in the wild. The town is flanked by the Nylsvlei Wetland and the Waterberg Biosphere reserves, leading to some nicknaming the town the “Gateway to Africa Eden”.

The Golfer’s Inn:

Mixing business with pleasure Modimolle might be in the heart of the bushveld, but that doesn’t mean your accommoda on should be rus c. he five-star Golfer’s Inn, situated inside the Koro Creek Golf Estate, should, for any discerning businessman or woman, be home away from home. That is if home is a luxurious mansion, with concierge service, private butler and chef creating five course masterpieces.

T

Five-star Golfer’s Inn caters to business people or vacationers looking to break-away from the big city lights, to spend a few days in a more peaceful environment. There are four rooms available, each with all the mod cons expected from a five-star institution. These can be booked separately while it’s also possible to reserve the complete house. The Inn is elegantly decorated with a subtle golf theme, although it was the many paintings, modern fireplace and 18th century liqueur cabinet that drew our attention.

Patio In the temperate climate of Modimolle we were able to relax outside on the patio, complete with braai, deck chairs next to the pool, and a lovely big-screen television to make sure we did not miss the action on the rugby field. The patio also served as venue for breakfast, while dinner was served under a marvellous glass chandelier. Five-course meal It was the five-course dinner, prepared for us by our host and London trained chef, JP Joubert, that was the hit of our weekend. Each dish was stylishly presented, with two starters, a main course and two deserts making their way to the six seater table. If we were pressed to choose, the crocodile starter would be our favourite. Crocodile can be notorious for being too dry, but these fillets brazed in cream and served with black pepper and glazed watermelon

eduction, were just about perfect. Once finished with our coffee, our slippers were heated up for us before we retreated to our room. Golf and Game The Golfer’s Inn would not have been called so if it did not involve some activity on the 18-hole Koro Creek golf course. A Golfer’s Package allows for your place to be booked on the course, with tee-off time, golf cart and score card ready when you are. The golf course also include a game park with gazelle, giraffe, kudu and wildebeest available for viewing, although a 4x4 is recommended for the drive through the reserve. The company who owns The Golfer’s Inn, also owns the local 100 seater Waterberg Convention Centre and Villa Olien guest house, making business package deals an option. As a exclusive business stop-over The Golfer’s Inn is highly recommended.

Hakuna Matata

t’s a problem-free philosophy... This exemplifies the 58 hectare Weesgerus Holiday Resort, situated 3 km outside Modimolle (previously known as Nylstroom). The resort is surrounded by lush bushveld vegetation such as Boekenhout, Vaalbos, Wildesering and at least 35 other tree species.

I

Conference and wedding venue? No problem Weesgerus has a total of three conference facilities equipped with air conditioning, flipcharts, overhead projectors, TV and video, CD player, as well as a wireless microphone. If you are planning a smaller wedding with a more secluded, open-air feel, the Lapa situated at the dam is perfect. 80 guests with a dancefloor or 120 without, can be accommodated here. Activities? No problem The largest attraction at Weesgerus is definitely the heated swimming pools. The outside pool is kept at a toasty 33º C Retr eat 4

whilst the pool in the solarium is heated to a therapeutic 37º C. The kiddies pool outside is kept luke warm, perfect for toddlers and babies to lounge around in while mom keeps a watchful eye from the surrounding lawn. For older kids there is a supertube, putt-putt course, volleyball, tennis, jukskei and of course fishing in the dam (catch and release). Nominal fees apply for some of these activities. Weesgerus also has options for day visitors and special facilities for guests with disabilities. Two chalets on the resort are specially equipped with ramps and facilities for wheelchairs. Accommodation? No problem No matter what your needs are or budget allows, Weesgerus has the solution with their caravan stands, 2/4/6-bed chalets, guest rooms and an exclusive 8-sleeper guesthouse. Muldersdri : As recommended by Mrs Ples uldersdrift is a peaceful and out-of-the-way area situated close to Johannesburg. The area is filled with sleepy farms and small holdings alongside tons of attractions and reserves. The most prominent of these is the Cradle of Humankind, a renowned world heritage site focussed on giving visitors an educational and entertaining look back at our past. If you’re planning a visit to this area one of the essential things to see is the Maropeng Visitor Centre. This beautifully constructed building features several scientific exhibitions ranging from the formation of the earth to when humans first left Africa. Among the varied attractions the centre offers an underground boat ride, taking visitors on a journey spanning from the most recent ice age to the formation of the earth and ending with a dramatic simulation of a black hole. The centre won the 2008 Tourist Attraction award at the South African Tourism Welcome Awards, proving that Maropeng delivers a truly unique and rich experience. If you want a more ‘handson’ experience when visiting the area, going for a stroll through the Sterkfontein Caves is highly recommended. These are the very caves where the famous

ESTATE

‘Mrs Ples’ fossil was found, one of the oldest humanoid fossils ever discovered. The journey through the caves is rewarding both in information and in simply experiencing the extensive cave networks with their millions of glittering stalactites. Another attraction available in the area is Bill Harrop’s ‘Original’ Balloon Safaris, an award-winning balloon tour company that has been operating since 1981. With a fleet of six large hot air balloons, carrying between six and 18 passengers each, Bill Harrop’s is the place to go whether you’d like a romantic two person flight or an exciting adventure in some of the biggest balloons in the world.

he Elephant Whisperer is a riveting and emotional read, telling about the plight of a herd of elephants caught in the middle of human problems. Lawrence Anthony is a renowned conservationist and founder of the Earth Organization, he is also the owner of the Thula Thula game reserve in Kwa-Zulu Natal where the story takes place. In 1999 he agreed to accept a herd of rogue elephants from a reserve in Mpumalanga, which would have been put to death since they were so troublesome. After constructing intricate bomas and electrified fences, the herd arrived on the reserve only to smash through the man-made barriers within hours of arrival. Throughout the book we see Lawrence and the rest of the staff at Thula Thula fight a battle against nature, human encroachment, overeager hunters and even poachers, all to save a herd of confused and traumatised elephants. If you’re a nature lover, or simply interested in African wildlife, The Elephant Whisperer will quickly find a place in your heart and in your book collection. R119

AMACE house numbers

12 500 bo les travel 8000 nau cal miles

ost homeowners don’t realise that it’s regulation to have their home numbers clearly visible from the road. They help emergency services reach your house quickly and efficiently when they need to. Finding a simple yet useful house number which displays clearly during the day or night is not the easiest thing but a local company known as Access Electrical manufactures the perfect device. AMACE Street Numbers is a waterproof box containing a low energy light which lights up your house number so it’s clearly visible from the street. Installing the device is very easy and it can be fitted on a wall, palisade fencing or any similar structure. During the day the device remains turned off and it switches on once the sun sets, either manually or using an automatic day/night switch. One of the greatest uses for the device though is that it can be linked to your home’s alarm system. When the alarm is activated the ACAME light will flash repeatedly, notifying police, block watch and neighbours of a problem. The AMACE Street Numbers unit is available from Access Electrical for only R200 (excludes VAT and postage). Contact Jane on 072-141-0641 for more info.

pending 128 days at sea to cross the Pacific ocean might not seem like a major achievement, but doing so in a boat made of nothing more than plastic bottles adds some weight to the effort. This is exactly what the six man crew of the Plastiki, an 18 metre catamaran did, sailing more than 8000 nautical miles from San Francisco in the US to reach their final destination at Sydney harbour in July. Skippered by 31 year old expedition leader David de Rothschild, the Plastiki expedition was undertaken to bring attention to the environmental impact of plastic bottles. The craft is made from 12 500 recycled PET bottles and held together by organic glue, ensuring that the whole vessel can be recycled, with even the mast made from recycled aluminium irrigation pipe. Powered by solar panels and windmills, the Plastiki even has a small vegetable garden onboard.

31 Traveller’s Tale

S ur v i val

Against all odds listair Gellatly, Arthur Taylor, his wife Fay and her parents Clive and Brenda Kelly were enjoying a peaceful holiday on the banks of the tranquil Zambezi river. On one of the final days of the expedition the men prepared their fishing boat to go out. After a quiet afternoon of fishing and watching the wildlife on the river the party was in high spirits and decided to go for a picnic on a nearby island. As they made their way towards the spot, disaster struck. An infuriated hippo suddenly lunged at the craft knocking everyone into the river before disappearing just as quickly. Amid the frantic scrambling and panic Arthur, Fay and Brenda got separated from the boat. Stuck in the middle of a crocodile infested river, Alistair decided to swim for the nearest bank to get help. After an excruciating swim he finally made it to the bank only to find himself staring directly into the face of danger. A large crocodile was barring his way and as he tried to scare it away it struck, forcing Alistair beneath the swirling brown waters. The crocodile would have killed him if it wasn’t for some quick thinking. Alistair clenched his fist and rammed his left arm down the crocodile’s throat, pushing down a seal that keeps water out. As the croc started to drown it released him and a badly wounded Alistair made his way out of the water. With his arm broken in three places and his shoulder ripped out of its socket he wasn’t in any shape to survive, let alone get help for the others. As night approached the temperature on the river dropped dramatically but those stuck in the river were well off compared to Alistair, broken, bleeding, bacterial infection spreading and the predators of the night descending on the scent of his blood. In the dead of night Alistair heard the sound of grazing nearby and saw a Cape buffalo metres away from him. One of the big five, a buffalo isn’t an animal to take lightly. But for some reason, perhaps it could tell that he was injured, the buffalo didn’t attack Alistair but actually lay down close to him. Reassured by the buffalo’s presence he drifted off to sleep, having lost a lot of blood, and just thankful that something was not attempting to kill him. The next morning he got a wake up call from hell as a vicious swarm of driver ants, swarming in their thousands, attacked him. The only insect known to have killed and consumed humans, the bites triggered a jolt of adrenaline through his body which allowed him to get away. Now 24 hours after the crocodile attack, Alistair was close to death. As he forced himself to the edge of the river he saw a couple relaxing on the opposite bank, but he was too weak to call out to them and they left, shattering his last chance of rescue. Meanwhile the rest of the group had been found by two kayakers on the river. They hadn’t heard from Alistair in hours though and had no idea if he was still alive. Lying in the sand, the slowly dying Alistair suddenly found himself being picked up and placed in a boat. The couple who he had thought had left earlier had miraculously spotted him on their way back and had rescued him. His injuries were treated and today Alistair continues his life in Africa, counting himself among the lucky few to have survived an encounter with wildlife on the banks of the Zambezi.
