I

have been fascinated with food since I was a little girl in Iowa. I was the oldest of six children with an Italian father and German/English mother. As a result, our family dinners were a great mix of Italian, German and down-home Iowa recipes. My dad was a football coach at the University of Iowa. After home games (win or lose) we would have a crowd over for spaghetti and meatballs or lasagna on those Saturday nights. Food lessened the gloom after a defeat. Summers were spent at Grandma Flora’s home in the woods near Lake Michigan. It was paradise for me! She made her bread every Monday, complete with a cross on the top. After the bread came out of the oven, we would devour as much of it as she allowed. She also made pasta – I remember her kneading the dough and rolling it out using a length of broom handle. I could never duplicate her wonderful sauce, but the combination of the homemade pasta and sauce was ambrosial. It is hard to believe that as a 14-year-old bride she couldn’t boil an egg! When I think of Iowa summers, I always remember our neighbor’s pig roasts in their backyard complete with incomparable Iowa corn and homegrown tomatoes.

M

om was not a casual cook – she always used her recipe cards to prepare dinners. I still have a shoebox with those old cards. She learned many of Grandma Flora’s recipes which she painstakingly copied. Several years after mom died, I was recuperating from surgery and hand-painted cookbook covers for each of us. My husband and I collected recipes from my mom’s collection (along with some from family and friends) for the book. When I was a senior in college I worked as a housekeeper for a doctor and his four children. I learned to plan the weekly menus along with a

shopping list as the doctor would go to the supermarket only once a week. After the five o’clock news, the TV would click off promptly at 6 PM and the family would troop into the kitchen for dinner. I quickly learned to have food ready on the dot. It was great training for me. One Thanksgiving, my mom was ill and couldn’t prepare the holiday dinner. The doctor’s family was also expecting me to cook dinner. I got up early, prepared and ate dinner at their home, and then went to my family’s house and made a second Thanksgiving dinner. I want to share a wonderful fall

recipe with you that was passed down to me from my sister’s mother-in-law. It was always a much-anticipated side dish at Thanksgiving, thanks to Katherine McGranahan. Much later, when I was creating elaborate menus for catering banquets, I made some modifications to the recipe that made it a true party dish. So plain or fancy, hope you enjoy “Katherine McGranahan’s Butternut Squash Casserole with Pecan Topping” or – dressed up – “Double Squash Soufflé with Pecan Topping”. n

even poets participated in “Old School Poets” on an evening in August, hosted by Tecumseh’s Boulevard Market. The event was organized by Gregg Perez of Lenawee Artists Lounge and featured vintage typewriters, which the writers used to create poems on the spot using two prompt words randomly chosen by participants and guests. Each poem challenge lasted 10 minutes and the resulting poems were displayed around the store during the event. The next “Old School Poets” gathering will be held Saturday, Oct. 15 from 8-10 p.m. at Salsaria’s, 146 E. Chicago Boulevard, Tecumseh. Audience assistance is encouraged, and those interested in challenging themselves to write poetic creations can call 517.470.0016 or follow Lenawee Artists Lounge on Facebook for more information. n

Some of the people you see in your everyday travels may have a second calling. In the case of four of Tecumseh’s wellknown citizens, that second calling is musical. Each of them shared their experiences to shed some light on the love of music.

M U S I C I A N S Story by Jackie Koch

Drums DMP Home Inspections - Owner

Resume:

Played drums starting in fifth grade and continued through high school. He has been in several rock bands. Started the band Paragon DMP, eight years ago and plays frequently all over the region,. “I’m so fortunate to have guys that really get along, picking songs and just having fun together.”

B

:

enefits of playing “Just having music around you all day long is such an inspiration of your feelings and emotions. It really helps you get through good days and bad days. I’m always looking forward to our next rehearsal.”

Memorable Experience:

“Probably one of the most rewarding things I have done was a thing called Mission Possible. We held it at Adrian College and it was to raise money for different charities. I did it for two years and the first year we raised $7,000 and the second year we raised $18,000. We almost filled Dawson Auditorium the second time. I also had a contemporary Christian band called Emmaus that played in that. That was really rewarding.”

Fun Fact: He grew up in a family www.tecumsehcarpet.com

of musicians and his wife, Paula is also a musician. The couple is working together on a new music project called DMP3614.

Advice: Practice, practice, practice.

R

:

esume Percussionist and drummer in high school and college, picked up guitar in the 70s. Stopped playing for 20 years until a New Year’s resolution led him to play guitar again. Plays at assisted living homes and is in an ensemble at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. Has played at Black Fire Winery, Flying Otter Winery and at Great Ideas during Art Walk.

through music.

Memorable Experience: “I played drums behind Ray Svestka. He played the

accordion. We would do gigs when I was 14 and 15 years old at Mel’s Britton Hotel. We were too young to drink but we got a hamburger basket and a Coke, and maybe ten bucks each for playing polka music all night long.”

Fun Fact: “I probably drive everyone nuts at work by singing the music that’s on our sound system. I usually have a song going on in my head. It keeps my mind active. It keeps me more mellow.”

Advice: “It’s a lifelong joy, it really is. Keep at it. The more you put into it, the better you’ll get.”

Gillin Eye Care - Owner

Bass Guitar

R

:

esume Started playing upright bass in sixth grade and picked up bass guitar in high school. Began playing shows at the Croswell Opera House in the orchestra pit in ninth grade. Plays in the TCA Big Band and also in the Jim Rice Group with Joe Tuckey.

Benefits of playing: “Music is a good way to get out in the community and meet people and connect with people, which also helps me professionally.”

Memorable Experience: “When I was in grad school down in Indiana

I played in a big venue in Indianapolis called the Vogue and it seats about 600 people. There was a curtain in front of the stage, so we couldn’t see the audience. And we’re warming up and getting ready and all of a sudden they raise this curtain, and here’s this huge concert hall with about 600 people in it. It was like, ‘Whoa!’”

Fun Fact: Both of his children are musicians and he has performed music at

events with them. His daughter, Elissa, was in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and he played in the orchestra for the play.

Advice: “If you look, you will find other musicians who you really enjoy spending

time with. If you want you can form really good friendships with those people. And that’s what it’s all about.”

R

:

esume Played in elementary and high school, joined a country band, then joined the Navy and played in the boot camp marching band. Stopped playing for 25 years until he was invited to join the Tecumseh Center for the Arts (TCA) Big Band 10 years ago. Also plays in the Jim Rice Group, a four-piece jazz combo, with Jim Rice, his high school band instructor.

Benefits of playing: “When I go down and practice my drums it can be a stress

Drums

reliever. It also can be a cardio workout. I’m fortunate, I get to play with some very good musicians.”

Memorable Experience: When the TCA Big Band opened for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. "We had to warm up the crowd when they were at the TCA, and that was a pretty good experience because I was one of the people that wanted to bring Big Bad VooDoo Daddy here."

Tecumseh Fire Chief

Fun Fact: He keeps a set of drums at the fire station for practice sessions with the Jim Rice

Group. “When I work 24-hour shifts it’s hard to get rehearsal time, so we practice out in the truck bays when we get together. If I get a call, I get up and leave, they keep playing, I go do my thing.”

Advice: “Don’t give up on it. It’s one of those things, you get out of it what you put into it. You spend a lot of time practicing, even for the stuff I do. It’s demanding to go out and do twohour shows, but it’s fun.”

Story by Mary Kay McPartlin

Children returning to school are often asked to write about how they spent their summer. Rob Lucarelli is asking students who attended Comfort School during the first four decades of the 20th century to share stories of their days in the brick schoolhouse at the corner of Centennial Road and Rogers Highway. Lucarelli began renovating the school building in April 2015. “It needed major work, and I’ve been working on it pretty much every weekend since,” he said.

Under siding, drop ceilings, and covered up windows and floors, Lucarelli wasn’t sure how much of the original building was going to be salvageable. He was pleasantly surprised at how well the building had survived its transformation into a residence preceded and followed by years of abandonment. He expects the building to be ready for visitors around Christmas, and would like to incorporate stories from Comfort School families. Lucarelli can be reached at 419.826.3074. n
