elcome to the 2018 Tecumseh Community Resource Guide, a valuable source of information on local government, schools and churches, as well as area activities and events. The guide puts a focus on business with categorized listings. Those seeking products and services will find contact information on over 160 area locations. Since 1824, as one of the oldest settlements in Michigan, Tecumseh has established a rich history in architecture, transportation, agriculture and industry. The Underground Railroad found support here in the effort to free people from slavery; the world-renown Dynamic Kernels project caught the attention and support of Henry Ford; and the Tecumseh Products Company became a Fortune 500 company as a leader in refrigeration. As recently as 2017, the city was named by a University of Michigan study as one of the best places in the state for entrepreneurs. Today, the city is an active and vibrant community, due in large part, to the collaboration and partnerships between local government and civic organizations, including City Council, Planning Commission, Downtown Development Authority, Chamber of Commerce and the Central Business Association. Service clubs are another pillar of support improving the quality of life for the city. Whether serving as an elected official or as a volunteer, it’s the work of many that delivers the quality of life residents and visitors enjoy today. Opportunity is here! The Business and Technology Campus is ripe for industrial development on the city’s east side; Revival Commons promises an exciting future for a mixed use of light industrial and commercial development on the city’s south side; and on the north end, a new residential project will open a large area alongside the River Raisin for new homes. In the words of Abi Evans, wife of settler Musgrove Evans, she wrote “a steady perseverance to make it what we would wish it to be... no new settlement ever yet was formed without a great deal of exertion.”

Beginnings

e were one of the first. In 1824 Musgrove Evans led a small group of pioneers to the banks of the River Raisin, making Tecumseh one of the first pioneer settlements in the Michigan Territory. The area was ideal for such a venture.

The river provided power, the soil was rich and fertile for farming, and the forests provided timber for the settlement. As the years went on, a carefully planned and bustling village began to emerge. Today, the city of Tecumsehâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s historic downtown serves as an architectural storybook of Tecumseh, showcasing both the business and art that continue to flourish in this vibrant community.

Dan Swallow | City Manager Dan Swallow grew up in the small northeastern Michigan community of Alpena. Before coming to Tecumseh his government career has included tenures with the the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments, Van Buren Township, and the City of Monroe. In 2015 he became the City Manager of Tecumseh.

He has credentials from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and actively participates in the Michigan Association of Planning and Michigan Economic Developers Association. Dan and his wife Michelle have two children.

Jack Baker | Mayor Jack Baker, a Tecumseh High School graduate, co-owned and operated Baker Brothers since 1986. He and his wife Betty have lived in Tecumseh for 34 years. Together they have raised two children. Jack has served on the city council for 22 years. He has served as mayor for 10 years and is the first Tecumseh mayor to be elected by the residents as compared to previous mayors who were elected by the city council. Prior to his tenure as mayor, he served as the mayor pro-tem and a councilman. In addition, he serves as

a Downtown Development Authority board member and has been the chairman of the Adrian-Tecumseh LDFA (Local Development Finance Authority) since its inception in 2014. “I am highly visible and easily accessible to every resident in the city. I spend 10 to 12 hours every day in downtown Tecumseh, so I have a feel for and understand the pulse of the city. I certainly am proud that this year is my 50th year of selling fuel and providing service on Chicago Boulevard.”

Troy Stern | Police Chief Troy Stern graduated from Clinton High School in 1989 and went on to earn a degree in criminal justice from Michigan State University. He then went on to graduate from the Lansing Community College Police Academy. His law enforcement career began in 1994 with the Somerset Township Police Department in Hillsdale County. He briefly served with the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department before beginning his current tenure at the Tecumseh Police Department in October of 1994. In November of 2001, Stern

was promoted to sergeant, and in November of 2010 he was promoted to chief. Over the years he has served as a narcotics officer, an emergency response team officer, team leader, field training officer, field training supervisor, and accident reconstructionist. He has been an instructor in emergency vehicle operations, defensive tactics, firearms, the Michigan motor vehicle code, accident investigation, and critical decision making. He continues to instruct at the Washtenaw Community College Police Academy.

n 1940, Tecumseh Mill owner Perry Hayden began what would become his world famous Dynamic Kernels Tithing Project. Hayden began by planting a cubic inch of wheat and tithed 10 percent of this crop to

his church. As the tithed kernels were replanted and other farmers and

even children participated, the project grew exponentially. Henry Ford heard of the project and donated much of the needed farmland. The final harvest in the tithing project required 2,666 acres, and amounted to 72,150 bushels of Dynamic Kernels of wheat. It required the land of 276 farmers, representing 30 different faiths and creeds. Today, Tecumseh’s faith community continues to carry on a vibrant mission of both worship and service.
