Personal Space

Exploration Studio: Personal Space 2011 OCAD University Habitat is an exploration studio involving imaginative social, ecological and formal answers to the needs of shelter within the context of unorthodox site. Students are to design a beautiful but idiosyncratic, intimate and essentially hermitic place for themselves for one year of work/study. They are to imagine living in these 21st century “cocoons alone and commuting to school during the week.

Social Space

Exploration Studio: Social Space OCAD University 2011 We wanted a space that transforms functionality in the winter. Although accessibility is limited, we wanted a variety of recreational activities with a focal point that clearly draws attention from each end of the park. The path orients both sides of residential and public transit space into a 300m long reach of shallow water. The water is 1 foot shallow, so that all one needs to do is simply remove their shoes to walk into what seems like a ravine.

Conceptual Model

The rectangular perimeter of the park functions as an 8 hundred meter track for walking and jogging. To get a closer view of the sculpture (which has been enlarged 5 times its original size), one must adventure into the rocks, by wading through the water. The parks true form is shown in the winter season when everything transforms white and the water surface becomes a great skating surface. The public can skate right up the instillation and weave through the geometric elements. When everything becomes a white canvas of snow, the public paint the surface with their colourful clothing.

Classroom/Housing

Exploration Studio: Social Space OCAD University 2011

The Toronto Islands is the perfect getaway for chosen students to keep a clear mind away from their everyday environment. This is a gathering space for Environmental Design students to live for 2 weeks on a symposium and aim to help find a building solution for third world countries. The necessary facilities required for these students include; a classroom, a washroom, sleeping quarters, and an eatery. All of the roofs are elevated higher from south to north so that sunlight can reflect into the buildings. Along with the use of translucent materials to maximize the use of sunlight, they are also used to shade us from too much sunlight.

The pathways that lead to the other buildings is covered by a canopy that unites everything for a single cause.

The South side has a learning center. This includes a lecture room for guest lecturers, a library and group seating. The 16 chosen students are divided into groups to prepare presentations of their ideas to the rest of their class and professor.

The Northen side has everything a student needs outside of the class room which includes a shelter that collects rainwater to pour down around the fireplace below. The illusion to see fire continuing to blaze while water is falling on it gives inspiration that we can help find balance in this world.

Woodland Boats is situated in harbourfront Toronto. It is connected to the lobby of a hotel and condo to serve as a means to elevate watersports in Toronto, and bring in guests from all over the world. Woodland Boats is inspired by Christian Morriseaux, son of Norval Morriseaux who taught me the art of Woodland Painting. The store also serves as a gallery which illustrates the stories of the first nations people. Other than selling watersport equipment, Woodland Boats include a public workshop for small custom boats and a pool to test in.

Urban Ecology

Urban Ecology - Liberty Village OCAD University 2013 Urban Farming has many benifits but require the support of an entire community. Liberty Village is the perfect location with the ideal demographic to build a centre where unity is formed for a healthier and educational lifestyle. The South Side of the centre acts as a billboard. Facing the QEW and train tracks, travellers will take note of the facility that continues to grow produce all year round. The facility includes all forms of indoor farming which include; greenhouse farming, hydroponic farming, aquaponic farming and a testing laboratory.

The South Side

The North Side of the centre acts as a gateway to the community. It opens up to a new street we will create called Canada Bread Rd. It will be able to facilitate large crowds for scheduled tours of the facility for the general public It also includes outdoor farm beds the local community can use, along with a resturant, a market, and many places to hang out.

Architechtural & Interior

Liberty Agriculture Centre: Site Analysis & Planning Procedure

Liberty Village had a demography that would suit a community centre based around agriculture.

Existing Building

Schematics “Canada Bread, the company that pumps out Dempster’s baked products, will be closing three of its plants in the GTA over the next three years, including the massive bakery located incongruously among Liberty Village’s art and design firms.” (Toronto Life 2010)

This is the Canada Bread factory in Liberty Village. The North side of this building will be demolished to build a space that can better facilitate a community. The south side will be kept to continue it’s strong production capabilities. The Split between the production and community delivers an atrium that brings together all of the programs Liberty Agriculture Centre has to offer.

The Tour A tour guide offers a complete guide through the production process. It is great learning experience for those interested in urban farming and an excellent field trip for students. Tunnel Gardens are great way to grow and also very fun to walk through. The Nest - Here the tour guide explains the community involvement and how the local community can rent out a garden on the south side.

Rotating Gardens are revolutionary rotary hydroponic systems designed with convenience, simplicity, and maximum yield in mind. Indoor Hydroponics - On the right, this is the biggest rotating garden with a diameter of 10ft. On the left, Tomato plants grow high enough to touch the ceiling. All produce here is grown without sunlight.

26

Rooftop Greenhouse - Welcoming maximum sunlight, experienced gardeners pass their knowledge to those who wish to learn.

Hydroponic Greenhouse - Facing the south, the giant wheel rotates to maximize growth. This machine is visible from the QEW and the railroad.

Aquaponics - At the bottom of the Hydroponic Greenhouse, engineers work towards the most efficient way of planting and breeding with the nutirents left over from the giant hydroponic wheel.

The Market - The tour ends at the marketplace where all the produce and fish are super fresh, super clean, and grown within the facility.

Furniture Form and Structure OCAD University 2011 Corrigem is a coffee table completely made of corrigated cardboard. The concept was to mimic the form of a valuable item with an invaluable material.

36

Coffee Table

37

Furniture Product Furniture OCAD University 2013 This relaxing chair is a made up of wood as flexible as skateboards, as causal as a day in jeans, and as elegant as ladies curves.

Blueprint?

Everyone goes through a pair of jeans that may have lasted them a long time. They are durable, casual, and extremely comfortable. Jeans are usually blue dye that over time will fade. We cling on to our memories today that seem to fade a bit more each day like a pair of jeans, but always find a way to remember. The blueprint we leave behind is printed blue and stuck on a chair so that the past can remain in the present.

Ergonomic Developement To the right: The are photographs of a adjustable lounge chair made out of garbage. Its purpose was to find a form that curves around the human body comfortably. Having everything adjustable allow ed recorded measurements for people of different sizes and shapes. To the right: Once the adjustable chair set in place that all people agree as comfortable and supports proper posture, it is traced. The trace becomes a template to create a design and also form a mold for the bending of the wood.
