On behalf of the co-organizers, curation team, advisory board, volunteers, partners, speakers, and performers, welcome to TEDxTraverseCity 2020! 2020 marks our tenth year of hosting TEDxTraverseCity in our beautiful community. We consider it not only an honor but also a privilege to curate a day that elevates consciousness and inspires change. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDxTraverseCity’s mission is “To inspire positive action to build our community into a resilient, sustainable, compassionate and healthy place that feeds our spirits and nurtures our families.” TEDxTraverseCity 2020 goes virtual! Because of these unprecedented times, TEDxTraverseCity will be offered in an online platform this year. A livestream event will ensure our community stays safe while celebrating ten years of bringing ideas worth spreading to Traverse City. Our tenth TEDxTraverseCity will provide another excellent opportunity for our community to be inspired and challenged. TEDxTraverseCity’s 2020 event will examine the timely concept of RETHINKING OUR HEALTH.

TRUE HEROISM IS REMARKABLY SOBER, VERY UNDRAMATIC. IT IS NOT THE URGE TO SURPASS ALL OTHERS AT WHATEVER COST, BUT THE URGE TO SERVE OTHERS, AT WHATEVER COST. ARTHUR ASHE

welcome

The health care landscape is rapidly changing, as well as the impacts on our community. Cross-cutting themes of aging and well-being challenge our values and converge with economics in health discussions. As a community, we can discover transformative change and produce better health and well-being for everyone. There are substantial economic and social implications for investing in health. Welldirected health spending produces optimal health outcomes and increases productivity and earning potential. Health and health systems contribute to well-being by protecting individuals and families from financial hardship, reducing poverty and inequity, and supporting social cohesion. We will hear insights on how health is a positive part of sustainability and community resiliency. We can emerge from our silos, as we recognize the opportunity to broaden our knowledge. Let’s step back and take time to take a more in-depth look, expand our perspective, and help contribute to a better community and world.

about TED

TEDx

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to ideas worth spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California over 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talk videos and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized, (subject to certain rules and regulations).

The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; and the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self-organized TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, which helps world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

THERE’S SOMETHING GREAT LIVIN’ INSIDE OF OUR SOULS. THIS IS OUR TIME TO SHINE. IT’S TIME TO REUNITE. I KNOW THAT WE WILL FIND, WE’RE GONNA FIND A WAY TO CARRY ON.

x=independently organized event

TEDxTraverseCity TEDxTraverseCity is an independently organized TED event that has grown into one of the most anticipated yearly events in the Traverse City area since it began in 2011. The goal of TEDxTraverseCity is to bring together bright minds to give talks that are idea-focused on a wide range of subjects; to foster learning, inspiration, and wonder; and to provoke conversations that matter. Founded by Paul Sutherland and Tim Nelson,TEDxTraverseCity is a launchpad for new ideas: a daylong event filled with inspirational speakers, entertainers and special guests from diverse backgrounds and industries. TEDxTraverseCity is a platform that makes people’s lives better through access to a broad spectrum of ideas. It’s a journey through a world of ideas, born of, and driven by, curiosity. The hope of TEDxTraverseCity is for attendees to walk away, feeling enlightened, motivated, and dedicated to making a difference in their own lives as well as the lives of others.

Bruce Patterson, MD Translating a Recent Scientific Discovery About COVID-19

YOU DO NOT NEED TO KNOW PRECISELY WHAT IS HAPPENING, OR EXACTLY WHERE IT IS ALL GOING. WHAT YOU NEED IS TO RECOGNIZE THE POSSIBILITIES AND CHALLENGES OFFERED BY THE PRESENT MOMENT, AND TO EMBRACE THEM WITH COURAGE, FAITH, AND HOPE. THOMAS MERTON

Bruce Patterson, MD received his undergraduate training in molecular biology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He then received his MD at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine followed by a residency in pathology. During the early stages of the AIDS epidemic, Dr. Patterson began investigating cellular reservoirs of HIV-1 using molecular and in situ cell based technology patented in his laboratory and used today around the world. Dr. Patterson determined that enough HIV virus was present in infected individuals to account for the massive destruction of the immune system. This paradigm altering work was published

in Science in 1993 and featured in Scientific American, Rolling Stone, and on the Discovery Channel. Dr. Patterson has authored over 150 manuscripts and book chapters focusing on single cell biology and diagnostics. Dr. Patterson was formerly Associate Professor of Pathology and Infectious Diseases and Director of Virology at Stanford University. He currently serves as CEO and founder of IncellDx Inc., a growth-stage company that has translated his research discoveries into state-of-the-art single cell diagnostics in Cancer, Immuno-Oncology, and Infectious Diseases.

Reinventing Health and Well-Being in a Pandemic

Rock Bottom…and Other Lies

Dr. Pennie Foster-Fishman has over 30 years of experience partnering with communities to build places where all children and families can flourish. Her consulting and research efforts are grounded in the belief that change is most possible when all residents and local leaders become active agents of change who are empowered to create neighborhoods, schools, organizations, service delivery systems, and communities responsive to local needs and designed to promote connection and equitable opportunities. Dr. Foster-Fishman’s frameworks for promoting collaborative capacity, youth and adult engagement, and community systems change have been adopted by communities, state/national agencies, and funders around the world. Dr. Foster-Fishman recently retired from Michigan State University where she was a professor in the Department of Psychology for the past 25 years. She is currently the President of Transform Change, a company that partners with communities to create system solutions engineered for health, economic security, and educational success.

Hindbaugh has worked in the behavioral health field for over 20 years. A native of Michigan, Hindbaugh obtained both his undergraduate and master’s degree in social work from Western Michigan University. He spent the early part of his career working in a variety of hospital-based programs around the Chicago area before returning to Michigan to run a youth crisis and counseling center. He subsequently spent three years as an Officer for a Community Foundation. In 2009, Hindbaugh moved to Traverse City where is the current CEO of Addiction Treatment Services, bringing with him a wealth of administrative, program development, and business skills to the organization. Since taking over ATS, the organization has more than doubled in size and is now the region’s largest treatment provider, earning Hindbaugh a spot on the 2010 “40 under 40” list (an honor he sadly no longer qualifies for). In 2012, Hindbaugh was honored with an award from Substance Abuse and Mental

Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for his organization’s efforts to promote recovery principles in the region. Additionally, the Recovery Month event Hindbaugh organized that year was featured in the award-winning documentary The Anonymous People. Thus, Hindbaugh now serves as a National Recovery Month planning partner facilitated by the SAMHSA in Washington DC. In January of 2015, Hindbaugh was invited along with other “leading experts in the field” to the first ever Office of National Drug Control Policy Forum: Access, Recovery and the Affordable Care Act held at White House. In March of 2016, Hindbaugh accepted yet another National Award on behalf of ATS from the National Council of Behavior Health who bestowed their “Change Maker” award on the organization at its annual conference.

EVEN IF HAPPINESS FORGETS YOU A LITTLE BIT, NEVER COMPLETELY FORGET ABOUT IT. JACQUES PREVERT

TEDxTraverseCity could not happen without the support of our wonderful community of people who believe in creating a platform to hear ideas and to challenge our thinking. With our cofounders’ vision, the guidance of our advisory board, and the dedicated collaboration team, we can create a day of ideas worth spreading. Each year we are overwhelmed by the support and energy surrounding TEDxTraverseCity. This year is no different as we brought together another inspiring group of speakers in a new virtual format. We know that today will create a difference in our community and our individual lives. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank the “Doers” who challenge the status quo and work hard to bring a flawless event to our audiences. We also thank each of our partners, whose business support makes this event possible. We are grateful for their generous donations and encourage our audience to patronize their establishments whenever possible and, if given the opportunity, to thank them personally. We especially thank our TEDxTraverseCity audience: our friends who believe in community power and forging connections to create a tangible difference. It is an honor to be part of a community by bringing fresh ideas, collaboration, connection, and inspiration. Last, and by all means not least, we are grateful for our founders, Tim Nelson and Paul Sutherland. It is their constant forward-looking vision that helps drive innovation and growth in our community. Our hope for 2020 is that you take an opportunity to unplug from your life and be open to new ideas and inspiration. It is our good intentions that can make a lasting difference and power in our community.

thank you
