The fairway has been buzzing with the word “utility,” the name for a new type of club that is transforming the strategies of amateur golfers, and even pros on Tour, for whom hitting a long iron is a major challenge. Most manufacturers’ R&D departments started pondering the question; why not combine the fairway wood’s features with those of a high-precision iron, to make middle range (under 200yard) shots easier, too? Like an iron, it would make setting up easier and give better directional control, even when driving against strong winds. The result was the Hybrid concept - the answer to many golfers’ prayers. Hybrids are a combination of an iron and wood, incorporating various features of each into one product to replace hard-to-hit traditional irons. These new hybrids offer significant advantages over traditional irons and, as a result, have experienced impressive growth in recent months throughout the golf industry. Manufacturers love them because they do not require exotic materials – steel heads work perfectly- and the consumer gets an affordable club. Most golfers struggle with their long irons (3, 4 and 5 irons) for a couple of possible reasons. The long irons have a relatively small sweet spot compared to other irons, and even
By
more importantly, the majority of golfers don’t generate enough clubhead speed to get an adequate “launch angle” for the longer irons. These hybrids are designed primarily for a player who has difficulty getting the ball airborne and getting distance from trouble lies, or even the fairway. Most hybrids have a low center of gravity enabling the ball to get up quickly. The majority of pros don’t use hybrids for the same reason they don’t use high lofted drivers, cavity back “game improvement” irons, alien sand wedges and 11 woods– the ball goes too high. But, as always, there is an exception to the rule – Todd Hamilton and Tim Petrovic are just two Tour winners who are both converts and proponents of the hybrid. The acceptance of the genre by touring pros, especially on the Champions Tour, has been someThe Little Black Book of Golf
what of a revelation. The long irons once were the clubs that set professional golfers apart, but the benefits of hybrids have been too significant even for the best players to ignore. The key to swinging a hybrid correctly is to look at what club(s) the hybrid has replaced. Because most hybrids are designed to be iron replacements, you will be well advised to swing your hybrid as you would your middle irons. As such, remember that it’s not necessary to try and scoop the ball upward (as many feel they have to do with low-lofted irons). Instead, you need to allow the low and deep CG of the hybrid to work its magic and launch the ball at a high and optimal angle. The trick? Don’t be afraid to swing down and through as you would with a mid- or long iron. Hybrid irons provide the playability of a fairway wood coupled with the accuracy of an iron, giving even average golfers more airtime on the difficult long approach shots. These new utility clubs are making shots in the 200-yard range so much simpler. Hybrids can be used on any lie where irons are used. In technical jargon, because the center of gravity is farther back, usually because of a wider profile, there’s a higher launch angle (ball therefore stops quickly on the green) and because of the flat face, the ball spin rate is higher versus a regular iron head. It is also true that the ball may carry slightly farther for average and lower swing speeds and the roll distance may also decrease. continued on page 8 www.teeballgolf.com
Hybrids These conditions are therefore ideal for many slower swingers and for those golfers who do not consistently hit the center of the face. So, should you switch to hybrids? 1. If you feel more confident hitting higher lofted fairway woods than irons, or 2. you don’t use your #3, #4, or even #5 iron any more, or 3. you can get more distance from a 9-wood than a 5-iron, or 4.you seldom take a divot when hitting your middle irons, or 5.you have even considered carrying woods like the #11 or #13.
Tour Edge Exotics CB 2 Possibly the best of all the hybrids tested! After revolutionizing the game with the introduction of the Bazooka JMAX IronWood, the Houdini hybrid, Tour Edge has more magic up their sleeves, with the new Exotics CB Max2 hybrid utility club. This is an ”ultra-hybrid” club that fits in between a hybrid iron, a fairway wood and a hybrid wood with tendencies of that of a short-shafted 7-wood-like club with wide and low profile faces and lots of forgiveness. This sleek and powerful state-ofthe art hybrid features a low profile design and a continued on page 10
Then hybrids may be your answer to better golf shots and more enjoyment of the game. We have identified the six best models, out of 32 tested, that you should consider in choosing a hybrid – the “gotta haves”. As always, the object of the exercise is to be custom fitted or to properly select a hybrid, allowing you to hit the ball the same distance as a perfectly hit long iron. A well-selected hybrid will also give you far more height, ease and repeatability than using those difficult to hit long irons. One other bit of advice - find the best shaft that works for you with your hybrid. There is a difference. Numer-
ous shaft manufacturers have specifically designed hybrid shafts. These are the most popular: UST’s Irod, Aldila’s Gamer and Blue ByYou, Mitsubishi’s ECU, Graphite Design’s AD, Aerotech’s Steel Fiber, Penley’s Heater, Mitsubishi’s Diamana and Fujikura’s Banzai shafts.

Hybrids moveable weighting system, kit included, that simply outperforms 99% of hybrids on the market. The CB2 combines a forged, lightweight 15-3-3-3 beta titanium cupped face that is chemically bonded to a heavier hypersteel body. Chemical bonding eliminates the need for welding around the face area to promote greater feel and longer carry and roll. The offspring of the wildly popular Exotics fairway wood, the CB2, shares the same distance-enhancing technology. The hybrid also features a cold-rolled titanium cup face that is computer-milled around the edge of the cup with a high precision rim. The remaining body is precision cast to include an interlocking channel. The steel body and the cupped face are chemically treated, pressed together, and vacuum heat-cured for permanent bonding without heavy welding. The CB2’s remarkable distance is also the result of multiple face thickness (MFT). With MFT technology, the perimeter of the face is thinner and the center is thicker. The slender edges allow the face to flex and rocket the ball at impact. The resulting distance and feel is not only desirable, but also exceptional. The CB2 has two weight ports with removable 6-gram screws. For enthusiasts looking to dial in their ball flight, the screws can help hit a draw, fade, or even eliminate a slice. The optional weight kit comes with four additional screws (2-gram, 4-gram, 8-gram, and 10
10-gram) that can be employed to fine tune the CB2 to any swing. The CB2 boasts a Tour Edge X-Quad Graphite Design shaft developed in conjunction with Graphite Design to improve the performance of the CB2, the X-Quad. The CB2 produces more distance, as much as 12 yards, than the majority of the hybrids currently on the market. Lofts: 16°, 19°, 22° and 25° are available. The CB2 Hybrid is available in right hand only in Graphite Design X-Quad, Aldila NVS Hybrid graphite and Nippon 950 GH steel shafts. The club’s optional weight kit includes: a tuning wrench, 2-gram weight, 4-gram weight, 8-gram weight, and 10-gram weight. $219.99 per hybrid $29.99 weight kit

pull face construction with a custom steel face that creates lower spin and increased ball speed and an adjustable weight port for swing weight and shaft adjustment. The club sets up square to the target line rather than closed and is extremely easy to hit and is very responsive from both the fairway and rough. It is also “sneaky” long and very forgiving. Our testers really enjoyed playing this club and especially its different color scheme. Sonartec HB-001 One of the pioneers of the hybrid genre, Sonartec has gained acceptance of their hybrids for the past few years by Pros and amateurs alike. Since their original introduction of the Sonartec Md Transition club, their newest model is the new, high-launch, low spin HB-001. The HB-001, which features its battle-tested rail technology, has a neutral face angle, which promotes a square clubface at address. The 455 stainless steel head provides a solid feel and crisp sound, reminiscent of Sonartec’s fairway metal roots. continued on page 12
Hybrids Nickent 4DX Ironwood This innovative company has, over the past two years, become one of the predominant players in the golf industry.
Its perimeter weighting and deep CG produce a high MOI for maximum forgiveness. With its lower flight and compact head, this club is a low-handicapper’s dream. It features a slightly deeper face, which allows punch shots, a feeling of power and stability at impact and has a superb feel on chips — heavy, dense and substantial bad swings are punished. Sonartec Golf teamed with Graphite Design International and created the “ONiN2” hybrid shaft to match the HB-001 head for additional accuracy and distance and it works well! $169.99. Available lofts are 17°, 19°, 21° and 23° and in left handed 19° and 23° with availability in October.

Having John Hoeflich, formerly of TaylorMade, and Clay Long of Nicklaus fame, as designers, has rocketed their tour usage and sales at retail. In addition to their outstanding drivers and fairway woods, their original Genex hybrid and 3DX hybrids and fairway woods, not to mention their irons, Nickent is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with on the Tour level as well as at retail. Nickent, which developed the first hybrid to utilize a patented brazing technology that fuses a titanium crown with a steel body, all while making the crown the thinnest it has ever been on a golf club head, has combined this technology into the 4DX hybrid. The 4DX Ironwood now features a titanium crown rather than a steel crown previously found in the older hybrids, which has saved approximately 50% of the weight in the crown. The .4mm crown is also half as thick as on the 3DX DC hybrids, so continued on page 16

when both attributes are combined, the new crown configuration weighs almost 4 times less than the crown of the 3DX DC hybrids. The face height of the 4DX is 2mm taller than the 3DX models, giving the 4DX less spin and a more penetrating ball flight. This design change creates a perfect trajectory that fights the wind and lands softly from long distances, while catering to every swing speed. XW Inserts, which have become the driving technology behind nearly every Nickent product in the 2007 line, are made of Tungsten Polymer to reduce vibration and to be used for swing weight adjustment. TaylorMade’s Burner Rescue Hybrid Simply put, nobody in the golf industry is as good at what they do as TaylorMade. Their Research & Development division is simply the best in the golf business. 16
Headed by Dr. Benoit Vincent, TaylorMade continues to introduce golf products that simply make playing golf so much fun these days. The leader of the pack and the most popular of all hybrids, hands down, are the TaylorMade Rescue clubs. The TaylorMade Burner series of clubs are the fastest selling clubs today. Led by the Burner Driver, the new Burner Rescue Hybrids are finding their way into many golfers’ bags. Why? Simply because they are extremely easy to hit, forgiving, offer a higher launch angle and a longer carry than most other hybrid models AND they are well priced. They are also beautiful to look at on setup being a one-piece head. The crown features TaylorMade’s distinctive SuperFast Technology crown markings. TaylorMade’s Burner Rescue Steel Shaft features an extremely light total weight with a light shaft and light grip, which promotes a faster swing speed for added power. The steel clubhead and Pull-Face construction provide high MOI and high COR for tremendous forgiveness and a faster ball speed. www.golftheberkshires.com
The steel clubhead is 7% larger than the Rescue Dual in volume, and has a 13% larger footprint to give a higher MOI and tremendous forgiveness for long, straight results on offcenter hits. Its shallow clubface design moves the CG position lower and farther back which makes the club easy to launch the ball high and long! Don’t be surprised to find yourself laying up off the tee box just to have an excuse to put the club in play! The quality of the Scandium shaft is 99.5% as compared to some of the best steel shafts that average around 85%. The torque of the Scandium shaft is 1.4, which is the lowest in the industry, and results in “bulls-eye” accuracy and phenomenal forgiveness on off-center hits. The club also features a high recoil liquid polymer packed cavity. As with all other hybrids, it has a low center of gravity to launch the ball easily. High Lofted Fairway Woods
(Nine woods, eleven woods, thirteen woods....) If you still struggle with your long and mid irons, or even if you struggle with your short irons, you might want to consider high lofted fairway woods: • 9 wood = 5 iron • 11 wood = 6 iron • 13 wood = 7 iron • 15 wood = 8 iron • 17 wood = 9 iron • 19 wood = Pitching Wedge • 21 wood = Gap Wedge Try a nine wood or an eleven wood. You will absolutely hit it more consistently than the equivalent iron. Numerous manufacturers have the 9 and 11 woods available. These higher lofted woods are available from Golfsmith and BANG Golf. Hybrids are here to stay and in most cases will help your game. Barry Lotz, J.D., Ph.D. is the director of the Professional Golf Teachers Association of America. here’s a lot to love about Ireland. This compact island— where you’re never more than 70 miles from its 3,000-mile-long coastline—boasts perhaps the friendliest people, most beautiful scenery and most spectacular links golf courses on earth. And within this land of plenty, Northwest Ireland—consisting of Counties Donegal and Sligo in the Republic of Ireland—has a landscape considered the Emerald Isle’s most ruggedly spectacular, not to mention an embarrassment of golf riches that include a strong combination of old, new and renovated courses.
comes in handy when you have to maneuver around the occasional sleeping sheep in the middle of the road. Indeed, besides the great golf the region offers, the feeling you have the place all to yourself is what makes Northwest Ireland so special. Nobody, including the livestock, is in much of a hurry in Ireland—especially in the Northwest—so check your Yankee attitude at the border and surrender to the Irish spirit. There are several ways to reach the Northwest—a 50-minute flight to Done-

Why, then, is Northwest Ireland still a relatively unknown golf destination? Forgive some folks in that neck of the woods if they can’t formulate an answer you’ll understand, since County Donegal has the nation’s largest Gaelic-speaking population. Seriously though, the friendly locals also speak and understand English, but the truth is the region’s remoteness is why it’s not on many golfers’ radar screens, which is exactly why Northwest Ireland should be on yours. Because Ireland-bound Americans tend to make beelines for the Southwest or the Dublin area, the rural, sparsely populated Northwest’s byways are virtually void of traffic, which 22

We completed our journey with a one-night stay-and-play experience at the luxurious Carton House in Maynooth, then stayed in boisterous, bustling Dublin for our final two nights. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. At the outset of your visit, you’ll know you’ve reached County Sligo, the unofficial gateway to the Northwest, when you py the flat-topped Ben Bulben. Strandhill Golf Club, located about four miles west of Sligo Town, is less publicized than its neighbor, County Sligo Golf Club, but it’s an outstanding test of golf in its own right. Strandhill, christened in 1931 as a nine-holer, is situated on rollicking linksland. Over the years nine additional holes were added by Strandhill’s club professional, Bryan Malone, and a few years ago esteemed course architect Donald Steel transformed the course into a par-69, 6,240-yard gem that elevated its standing among Irish links courses. My unforgettable round began in a sunny breeze, which became a sustained 60 miles-per-hour wind by the turn, which begat horizontal rain and hail for two holes before I finished in sunshine. About 20 minutes north of Sligo Town—whose nice selection of shops, pubs and restaurants makes it a fun and easy town to explore on foot—on the N15 is Bundoran Golf Club, a delightful links in a popular summertime, honky-tonk resort town. The course has recently been strengthened by moving back several tee boxes and shifting a few green sites. The incredible wind and horizontal hail also reared their ugly heads at me at Bundoran. Donegal Town, slightly less than an hour north of Sligo Town on the N15, features a quaint downtown area surrounding the Diamond, the town square that includes a variety of shops and restaurants. architecture, Murvagh was 7,200 yards long upon opening in 1976. Eventually, club officials felt technology passed the course by. Enter Pat Ruddy, a golf writer by trade who, beginning with his own highly acclaimed European Club’s 1992 opening south of Dublin, has succeeded Hackett as Ireland’s most prolific course designer. Ruddy’s extensive redesign has once again made the par-73, now 7,400-yard Donegal one of Ireland’s must-play links. We headed north through Letterkenny—the northwest’s largest town—to the tiny village of Downings and the Rosapenna Hotel & Golf Links, located on the Rosghill Peninsula on Mulroy Bay. Rosapenna not only features 36 holes of standout golf, but also a superb resort hotel. The entire facility is owned and operated impeccably by Frank Casey, whose father once was the hotel’s head waiter.

Northwest Ireland Irish Thriller: North By Northwest The resort’s top dog is its Sandy Hills Links which, since its 2002 opening, has been recognized by many publications as one of the world’s best new courses. Sandy Hills is another Ruddy creation that winds through the towering dunes along Sheepshaven Bay. Casey also had Ruddy add new, longer tees on the front nine of the resort’s original Old Tom Morrisdesigned Old Tom Morris Links that opened in 1891. Those outward 26
holes cut between tall dunes and the ocean, while the back nine runs up and down a massive hill across the road. Eventually, perhaps by the time you read this, the original back nine will be replaced by nine totally new Ruddydesigned holes on the fairly flat inland side of the sand hills, seamlessly forming the Morris/Ruddy Course. During your stay at Rosapenna, be sure to drive through the nearby and incredibly beautiful Glenveagh National Park, and visit the magnificent gardens at Gleveagh Castle, which also offers tours. Hills Your next stop should be the village of Portsalon and its namesake Portsalon Golf Club, which opened in 1891. Until a few years ago, Portsalon was simply a pleasant 5,915-yard walk in the park hard by the sweep of beach along gorgeous Ballymastocker Bay. The toughest part of the round was keeping your eyes on your ball and off the scenery, which also includes the beautiful Donegal hills. Portsalon now forms quite a Northern Donegal triumverate with Rosapenna and Ballyliffin, whose Glashedy Links—another Ruddy creation that has earned worldwide plaudits—and Old Links (recently renovated and strengthened by Nick Faldo) sit within one of the world’s most marvelous dunes systems at the top of the Innishowen Peninsula, overlooking

If you do choose to conclude your trip in Dublin, take the scenic route east along Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast, where a host of great unsung golf courses await. The best, and best known, of these is Royal Portrush Golf Club. Its Dunluce Course is consistently ranked among the world’s top 10 courses, but its fairly flat Valley Course is also a beautiful gem nestled amidst towering sand hills. And despite just 20 perfectly placed bunkers, the Valley gives players a stern, yet fun test. Just below the cliffs of both courses is White Rocks Beach, one of the most beautiful stretches of sand you’ll ever walk. Must-see nearby tourist attractions include Dunluce Castle, the amazing Giants Causeway and the Old Bushmills Distillery that, in 1608, became the world’s first licensed whiskey distillery. Instead of taking the direct route to Dublin, leave enough time to detour there by driving further east along the Causeway Coast, then south along the stunningly picturesque Antrim Coast Road, where you can explore one or more of the beautiful Nine Glens of Antrim. Even if you don’t have time for Northern Ireland, that’s fine, because you’ll still feel on top of the world in Northwest Ireland. continued on page 30 27

This resort is your home while on vacation. You can choose a one, two or four bedroom spacious suite, all feature comfortable furniture, a full-service kitchen, separate bedrooms, and huge living rooms and dining areas. On golf junkets I appreciate more than a one- room facility with a kitchen for breakfasts, snacks, cocktails, etc., and a washer /dryer so I can pack lightly. However, there are also deluxe rooms where you will find many of the same comforts, and all of the same amenities.

This incredible enterprise of the Oneida Indian Nation is just a direct route west on the Mass Pike to the New York Thruway. At Exit 33 you know you have arrived for the grand Tower & Hotel and the Golf Dome suddenly appear to rise up out of the flat farmlands. This is a perfect place for conferences (we were attending the International Network of Golf Spring Conference) for all it has to offer, especially the golf! The first thing I noticed was how the use of nature in both the exterior and interior design of this resort brings guests inner peace and harmony
service. This was the best-trained, friendliest staff I have had the pleasure of knowing. Even though Tom and I had many meetings and workshops to attend, afternoons found us on the golf courses. My favorite course at the resort is Shenendoah, “The Deer”, recently named one of the top 50 courses for women by Golf for Women Magazine. Also Shenendoah, designed by Rick Smith, is a certified Audubon International signature sanctuary, making the many nature views spectacular. This is a course with a variety of holes, from

even though there is constant action. The resort provides luxury accommodations, headline entertainment, fantastic convention facilities, world-class golf, casino gaming, retail shopping, superb dining, a new tennis pavilion, Lava, the new dance club, and the Spa. The second thing I realized was this is a resort all about
parkland settings to wide open fairways trimmed with fescue rough. With five different tee choices, the 5,185 –yard forward tees virtually eliminated difficult carries for me. The third day we played Kaluhyat, “The Other Side Of the Sky”, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. This is definitely a shot maker’s course. There are dramatic changes in elevation offering spectacular views from plateau settings. I could just picture what this course must look like in the fall with all its vibrant colors. There are many

narrow tree- lined fairways, yet other parts of this course give you an open links-style play. Again there are five tee options ranging in length from 5,293 to 7,105 yards. I was fortunate to play with Keller George , Chairman, Oneida Nation Gaming Commission, so even though my game was not on, I learned so much about the Oneida Indians and Turning Stone. The majestic Clubhouse, which serves the Shenendoah and Kaluhyat Courses, houses the well appointed pro shop,
the first stop on the PGA Tour’s fall series. There are two executive courses: Sandhollow at Turning Stone, a ninehole par three that winds through woods and wetlands with greens surrounded by wild fescue and rock outcroppings, and Pleasant Knolls, five minutes from the resort, nine holes of par 36 golf over seventy acres with wide-open fairways, fast greens, challenging water hazards, and a gentle rolling terrain.

a restaurant, a 400-seat banquet room (ING had some fine dinners here), patios, and an outdoor balcony. There are putting greens and a driving range. Again service is superb. Player Assistant Reggie Carter is the man to meet, just terrific! Five minutes away there is the Atunyote Golf Club, “The Eagle”, designed by Tom Fazio. This parkland setting features vast stretches of open space, rolling hills, a stream and small water falls, and several lakes. It is the longest of Turning Stone’s three championship courses at 7,490 yards. It is also

I can’t forget the Golf Dome. It rained on the afternoon of the Taylor Made Demo Lab which was no problem! Everything was held in the dome. With the forty practice stations we were all trying out the new drivers, etc. This climate-controlled environment might want you to travel north rather than south this winter to fine- tune your game. This is one of the top ten golf domes in the USA as selected by Golf Range Magazine. The food was superb; from the all you can eat (we couldn’t eat it all, but it was delicious) Brazilian steakhouse Rodizio Churrascaria to Nathan’s Hot Dog Corner, featuring Coney Island hot dogs with all the trimmings. Guests have six gourmet cuisine choices, five casual fare places, plus eight quick eateries. Some of the ING members had breakfast at The Café at Skana Spa in the Lodge and said it was excellent. Speaking about The Lodge, if you don’t stay there, still visit it for this architectural structure is breathtaking. This is an all-suite hotel that greets you with the majestic Great Room housing a three story stone fireplace. This building also houses The Spa, where smoothing treatments and modern amenities are combined with American Indian cultural themes to give one an unforgettable unique spa experience. The serene grounds lent to the spiritual feelings of relaxation and warmth. 42
We stayed at the Hotel which made it very convenient to get to the Event Center and Conference Center. Our room and bath were very well appointed, and service was outstanding From the lobby it was minutes to all the action. Tom and I actually had a half hour break before meeting others for dinner, so he introduced me to gambling. We played nickel slots in one of the non-smoking game rooms and won $285.00! Beginners luck!

Some of the ING member took in the Huey Lewis and the News Show. There is always top entertainment. I also recommend browsing at the shops, especially Oneida Sky, a museum quality gallery of American Indian art from across the United States. I bought a beautiful pair of turquoise earrings with some of my winnings. I need to mention that besides the Hotel and The Lodge, Turning Stone also has The Tower at Turning Stone, The Inn at Turning Stone, and The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone. ING held a most successful conference at a golf paradise with many, many extras amenities. These two ING members plan on returning to Turning Stone Resort as a getaway.

ust ten minutes from the Disney World Resort is a golfer’s peaceful paradise tucked away in pure natural beauty; the old Orlando of 1,200 acres of wetlands, orange groves, and distant rolling hills. A GOLF OASIS IN ORLANDO While there, do take advantage of the prestigious David Leadbetter Golf Academy for a club fitting or swing tips to full-swing and short game analysis and strength conditioning. There are over six acres of a double-sided driving range, a short game practice facility, and chipping/ putting surfaces for just that one hour lesson up to two or three day retreats for groups of four or fewer. The Omni provides cart service for golfers in tow to the Academy and the clubhouse. At the courses there is a complimentary Callaway practice facility with an expansive practice domain, putting green and short game area. All carts are equipped with digital Prolink GPS Caddy Systems. The National is a traditional 7,128-yard tree-lined course designed amidst 200 acres of southern woodlands, wetlands, and orange groves. The 210-yard par-3 14th requires a very bold tee shot to a barely visible green over a large wetland area. And numbers 7 through 10 are truly showcased with the sentries of lush orange groves. Tom really enjoyed this course for you will use every club in your bag and play every type of shot. However, I personally preferred the links- styled International Course for its serene Florida wildlife and golf reminiscent of the British Isles. The International Course, spanning 7,363-yards, offers a hard, fast playing surface with plenty of wind, wetlands, and pot bunkers. On the par-4 hole 56

number 4 there are environmental areas all to the right and pot bunkers placed like puzzle pieces on the left hill. Needless to say two accurate shots are in order to make par on this hole! The seventh, par-4, is the number one handicap hole with a great elevated tee to view the water down the right hand side and in front of the green. Got to see my first gator on a golf course traveling to the eighth hole. The International hosts the MBNA WorldPoints Father/Son Challenge aired nationally on NBC Sports every December. continued on page 58 The Little Black Book of Golf

A GOLF OASIS IN ORLANDO Now to the food! At the Omni you must order the New York sirloin. It is the best steak Tom and I have ever eaten in our 64 years! The choices for meals are outstanding with six different restaurants. Care for Italian, try Trevi’s Mediterranean, that also has a full breakfast menu. Croc’s poolside bar and grille has lite gourmet fare with great fruit smoothies and the perfect Daiquiris. I headed for Morsel’s every morning for the Starbuck coffee. David’s Club is an upscale sport’s bar with that great steak. Besides wonderful food, there are six flat screen T.V.’s , pool tables, darts, and foosball, plus granite –topped card tables with leather chairs. It’s where we watched a Patriots’ playoff game. If you like Pan-Asian fare then you must have dinner at Zen Den. For a mid-day break or for a quick

very once in a while, at a trade show, a new golf gadget comes upon the market that makes sense and has a real purpose to be in your golf bag. At this past spring’s golf show, in Boston, I came across such a useful golf tool called the Dipper. This is the world’s most compact golf ball retriever. Just snap it on the end of q club, slide and secure it, extend for more length and retrieve your golf ball out of the water! Not even seven inches long, it is easy to store in your bag. This makes a great golfer’s Christmas stocking gift. For corporate and/or charity tournaments your logo can be printed on the side.

Nike’s Karma Golf Ball
What every golfer needs for playing golf – good Karma. This 2-piece ball with a 312-dimple pattern will be Nike’s softest ball to date and will benefit those golfers with slower swing speeds. With only a 50 compression, compared to the average 80-90 compression balls of today, the feel and distance are excellent. When golfers need more good KARMA to carry the ball over a lake, bunker or any other obstacle that can get in the way of a good shot, the KARMA ball will provide them with renewed confidence with its new 312 dimple design that delivers high trajectory. Nike Golf conscientiously has packaged the KARMA ball with 50% recycled content. The packaging itself triggers a connection to the earth combined with a sophisticated look. The KARMA ball also includes a unique and distinctive face stamp graphic, distancing itself from any other ball in the market. MSRP: $28.00 per dozen www.nikegolf.com
Breakmaster
Having trouble reading the greens? Figuring out the break? Try the BreakMaster, as is currently being used by hundreds of Tour Pros and caddies on the PGA, Champions, LPGA, Nationwide, Canadian and European Tours. Both Vijay and Camilo are proponents of the BreakMaster. In its short time on the market, the BreakMaster has become the go-to device used worldwide by tournament committees to set pin positions for major competitions. The BreakMaster is far more compact than the much larger “digital levels” which had been used for this function in the past. What’s more, the BreakMaster measures green slope in all directions, whereas, the digital levels only measure one slope at a time. A truly useful tool and a great stocking stuffer! $79.95 www.exelys.com 66

Sure heads will turn in wonder when you unleash your new Pipe Putter from Nickent Golf on the green, but their wonder will turn to awe as you sink those twenty foot putts time and again.
From the company that brought us the 4DX Driver series and the 30X Pro Series Irons now comes the Pipe Putter – a completely new approach to putting. Nickent has revolutionized the way we putt by making the visuals three dimensional. Putting has always been two dimensional, allowing only limited visualization to align your putts. To cure this, Nickent has put a cylindrical pipe on top of the club head to envision your alignment three dimensionally. The Pipe Putter allows you to align your ball, with the help of an ultra-light thermoplastic alignment aide, showing you precisely where you are aiming. The three dimensional view will show you what direction your ball will roll on any part of the green and from any stance.
by Mark Petrino
section makes this the most extreme weighted putter allowed by physics, shifting weight to the rear of the club head giving the ball a true roll. The weighted club head allows for a true pendulum stroke while keeping the club stable throughout the swing. The mallets P-line face insert is a proprietary advanced polymer composite which keeps the ball from skidding and kicking off the face. In fact, Nickent reported that in a recent independently conducted skid-and-roll test, high speed cameras showed that the Pipe produced significantly less skid than either the Odyssey 2-Ball or Ping Craz-E. A standard WINN grip and True Temper Double Bend shaft round out the Pipe Putter.
Other features of the Pipe Putter: a heavy plug in the rear of the pipe

GREAT HOLIDA GIFT Y
I have always been an average ball striker and fair short game player. My strong suit was always putting, until about a year ago when, for one reason or another, I could not make a standard five foot putt. Seeing my frustration, a friend of mine told me about the Pipe Putter. Since using their advanced technology, three putting is thing of the past. I have shaved at least six strokes off my putting and have built confidence in all other areas of my game. The Pipe Putter comes in five different styles: The PP/001 through the PP/005 each with different enhancements, but all with the same advanced technology. My preference is the PP/001. I strongly urge any golfer struggling with his putting, or for that matter, anyone who wants a better game on the greens to visit “nickentgolf.com and learn more about the Pipe Putter.
