Architecture Catalogue

For the last several years that I have been practicing in architecture field, from academic practice in school of architecture, design in the architecture studio, management work as client representation, through construction site supervision. These all can give me the overall view of architecture in both of social, scientific and artistic term, which we as an architect have to deal with all these complexity and diversity context and deliver the result as architecture. ‘Cast The Masses’ is named after I have finished my portfolio after ten years of exploration in architectural field, from academic to professional and back to academic again. Cast in this sense may refer to the design process before the result came out as the masses, the masses of building, the masses of study model, throughout the masses as the public. Those in the end accomplish and generate the further development after our design process and our architecture. I start my academic training from the small scale of masses as the Interior Architecture. During bachelor study I can learn the way to cast and create the relationship between architecture and users, from furniture design up to the scale of building design. Then in professional practice I also start from small scale of products, exhibition and interior design at IJ Siam. After almost a year at IJ Siam I had an opportunity to join research and design architectural firm in Thailand, Prophet Archtekton. This is the place where I aroused and feel enthusiastic to work in broader and extensive scale, I begin to learn to deal with complexity in context and relationship between the big masses of architecture and masses of public. Another offer was arrive in 2006; I made a move to learn another side of the business by joining the PDC Engineering. The project management and site supervision let me to learn from both side, the owner or the client and the architect or designer, in which broader my vision about overview of the whole process. And in 2008 I have decide to go back to academic practice again at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands, where architectural education is strongly oriented towards the simulation of theoretical, research together with professional practice. After several years of gaining experiences in various field of both academic and professional works. Moving back to architectural practice in design process is my aim, to cast from the conceptual and design development process to be the masses of architecture that begin to communicate and arouse the relationship with another masses of the public.

2008 - 2010 Master student at Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands While being in various fields of professional work for 5 years, I decide to go back to academic field and Europe was the best destination to explore in architectural field from history, theory, through technology. MSc 3 and 4 : Public Realm, Urban redevelopment in relation to public realm of Rotterdam Within the theme of context and modernity in the 21st century the studio will focus on ‘public building’ in the Netherlands. The research and design studio of Public Realm Rotterdam will explore the meaning of public realm in architecture, explore the meaning of public realm in the light of current urban redevelopments in the city centre ofRotterdam. The city municipality has just launched a competition for the site of the former ‘Stadskantoor’. The site islocated behind the Rotterdam town hall on the Coolsingel that dates from the thirties. The site is an existing urban block in the city. The characteristic L-shaped part of the block dating from the 1950 has to be preserved. Later additions will be demolished. There is a competition program provided, but the studio will be invited to develop different programs based on through research and own insights. In potential, the site can house offices, dwellings and shops and also social-cultural facilities. Mixed programmes and new strategies have to be developed to meet the social, cultural, political and economic problems and needs of the Rotterdam city centre in the 21st century. Such strategies can involve themes such as a public realm for a diversity of city inhabitants . Theory and practice together form the ground on which the discourse of studio Public Realm is founded. MSc 2 : The Why Factory, Death of leisure city MVRDV together with Delft University of Technology runs a new think tank: The Why Factory. The course wants to give argumentation back to the architectural and urbanistic world. and concentrates on the production of models and visualizations for future cities. This studio focuses on research and theorization on how to make new cities. It researches possible directions of our urban futures in the theme of ‘Death of leisure city’. Together with the collaborators that look into leisure from political, economic, social and cultural perspective. The research will process various data and information in order to embrace the whole world of leisure and pinpoint it’s urban implications. Furthermore, it will make hypothesis on how leisure should become a creative force for our cities. MSc 1 : Public Realm, Casablaca Mediatheque The program of the Médiathèque epitomizes the coexistence of two different layers of the public realm: a layer of traditional urban public space and a more recent layer represented by developments as the worldwide web. It raises questions as: what is the meaning of architecture in relation to a public realm that is composed of squares and streets, as well as of virtual fora and chat rooms? Which architectural typology corresponds to the program of the Médiathèque? Does the enticement of several layers of the public realm offer new possibilities for centrality within the city and thus for new public buildings? This studio is in collaboration with the Schools of Architecture in Casablanca and Rabat (Morocco). With the growing internationalization of architectural practice (international competitions and commissions) architects are increasingly working in a condition of ‘displacement’. This studio wants to investigate which tools, instruments and approaches architects have available to operate within a cultural condition that is not their own.

During MSc3, the group research and individual essay were executed. The range of research various from small scale, Public-Private-Collective space in relation to condensed and mixed building typologies, and large scale to create the urban scenario and master plan as a whole group. And the conclusion came out as the published booklet in the theme of ‘Rotterdam City4’. 11

Urban Scenario theme is ‘The Revival of Historic Rotterdam’, focus on how to using the historical assets to improve city center towards the future. Urban morphology, start by mapping of water and urban area during 17th to 19th century which shown that the city center area is always have high density of residential and commercial in the city center area according to the fact that it was port city and lots of worker live in city center.

While the whole city-centre of Rotterdam seems to be build up out of long linear connections (visual and physical), with a lot of overview and without obstructions or suprises, our site seems to be the exception. Because of the 3 periodes of construction of the surrounding buildings, few of the existing circulation is taken into account. Every form of power in the city was deconstructed: big business and administration districts were distributed throughout the urban net, thereby improving accessibility and visibly reducing building scale. Central and suburban areas were abolished. The city was transformed into a multi-center net, with the same provisions everywhere, without cars and easily accessible by foot. Diversity enlivened every area making it safer, more efficient and active 24 hours per day. 34

The financial crisis of 2008 found governments unable to control their economies, leading to the collapse of the macro credit and rating systems. Micro credits were already in existence, but it was not until the failure of macro credits that they took control of the financial world. Importantly, micro credits were given mostly to women due to their proven interest in long-term profit. Women were now in charge of the economy and society therein. One of their major changes was the replacement of democracy with micro-democracy, introducing economic measures which, especially after 2025, helped the world to recover from the crisis. In the new system every person was allowed to take part in the governance of his or her region.
