PREFACE - Personal Statement

Studying in foreign language and continent has significantly established my independence and maturity. Becoming the student of UiTM Malaysia and Teesside University UK has developed my design expressing skills and cultivated me to be more capable at doing hand drawn sketches, AutoCAD drawings, manual renderings and illustrating, apart from expressing my design ideas into 3D Software such as Sketch-up and other Adobe software. I was elated to pursue my master’s degree, gain abundance of knowledge and new experiences, while studying together with other nationalities. I believed I’d complete my postgraduate studies in the UK with flying colours in view of the fact that I was a Second Class Division One graduate from that country. Here I am graduated with a Merit in MA Urban Design from Oxford Brookes University UK, albeit learning about a whole new course on designing and planning which was rather difficult from my point of view. Throughout my studies, I have entered several events and programs managed by my school department as well as my university. The group conducted by me for ASEAN Design Jamboree 2008 event was nominated the Best Group and won 1st place in a few competitions held during the event. It was one of my prime achievements and I met design students from South East Asia such as Indonesians, Thais and Filipinos. Getting to know them and exchange customs had been one of the most memorable occasions of my existence which made me appreciate other country’s art and culture even more. Later on in Teesside, I was appointed to be a committee member of Teesside University Malaysian Society as the Publicity Bureaucrat. I was also the international face for the university’s prospectus and have represented the School of Arts and Media in an International Exhibition held at the university. I was an active member of the Malaysian Society in Oxford. My final Urban Design project is still being used widely by the tutors in the Department of Planning as course reference in lectures and classes. Soon after finishing diploma, I was employed by my former internship firm called A&I Network from December 2010 until right before I flew into the UK to further my first degree, and get the pleasure from being one of the designers in the organization. From there, I learned working with multi-racial developers, contractors and dealing with suppliers, which has improved my confidence level and communications skills. I value creative thinking, commitment, teamwork and performance. I personally think that being a keen learner with capabilities and the experiences I gained would help me prepare to produce maximum output as possible as a team member. After graduating my first degree, I have been proposed to fill in as a Designer in a design and built firm in Malaysia which then exposed me into the role of site supervision that includes the work of producing progress report and coordinating the contractors up until project hand over. In my spare time, I enjoy doing adventurous outdoor activities such as hiking, jungle canopy tracking, archery, and also indoor sports such as futsal and wall climbing. I am seeking for opportunities to work together with some internationally renowned interior design or architecture companies and developers before pursuing my dream to become a woman entrepreneur building up my own company that is capable of creating employment for future graduates apart from sharing the knowledge and experiences I can get from time to time. I believe that my values and passion for design make me a good addition to any company or team.

FINAL YEAR DESIGN PROJECT 1 Interior Architecture Proposed New Design for Apple Booth Store at Westfield London

The key elements in designing a booth or a kiosk is through its function, accessibility and aesthetical value, to drive the attention of customers and passers by. Therefore, space requirements and design concept need to be determine not only according to client's needs and branding purposes but also by providing appropriate human ergonomic aspects and figuring the best type of attractions to deliver impactful customer experience. This Apple Booth Store is designed to be having all of the above mentioned criteria in accordance with the type of services Apple or Machine would be providing.

URBAN DESIGN PRACTICE Diversity of Spaces: Connecting plots and blocks that are currently being segregated by Oxpens Road whilst providing appropriate mix uses for the community and economy.

The figure below represent the Masterplan of Oxford West End created by Group 7 in Urban Design Studio. It is an axonometric perspective of the site designed by the group, overlooking from the West of Oxford. This UD Studio masterplan rationale for this site is to enhance the experience on arrival from the South of the city. The street network created will connect to periphery areas of interest including Westgate Shopping Centre and Oxford Castle. The population can navigate efficiently through the site, guided by the still visible Spires whilst making full use of additional facilities and retail opportunities. With purpose built cycle lanes and pedestrian walkways, safety as well as enjoyment will be paramount. This objective will lead to design actions such as creating a traffic calming and safer streets to serve the community at the Oxford’s West End area. Cullen (1961) explains the importance of creating a place to giving a good visual perception is by gathering buildings looking as if they are layered and collaged together can produce a pleasurable vision of a place.

According to Mehta (2013), sense of safety on the street will be achieved by the characteristics and familiarity of the environment where vegetation are being inserted onto the street design, and also where there was a presence of non-residential mix land use on the street (Perkins et al. ,1993). The map above demonstrates building blocks and plots that were created based on the street networks planning made earlier in UD Studio. Red long arrow indicates principal streets. Dashed red lines represent the integrated street typology being implemented in the site using the integrated street example of Exhibition Road in London. Dotted lines are streets that is pedestrianised but could still accommodate strolling cyclist.

DESIGN OBJECTIVES Design Images on Site Traffic calming streets with appropriate hard and soft landscaping along the road which has vehicle parkings.

Integrated street with one way vehicle lane to accommodate pedestrians and cyclist. Different built form material finishing using stones and bricks.

Hard and Soft Landscapes to provide sensory richness and add up to the energy efficiency scheme with the use of appropriate decidous tress/plants.

Covered Market providing business opportunities for the OCVC and others, opened for the public to excess and connecting to the City Centre via Westgate.

OCVC Square that resembles the use and design of Trafalgar Square in London.

A Dutch traffic engineer Hans Monderman introduced a concept of shared space, an implementation to an integrated street. Putting the relation between traffic behaviour and the design of public space on the cities’ planning. The idea of this concept was to create a space whereby pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles can all occupy the same surface, without kerbs or barriers to segregate them. The rationale behind this idea is that occupiers of the street, both pedestrians and vehicles, will behave more responsibly and raise their awareness upon entering the street.

FINAL DESIGN PROJECT Urban Design Issues II Stage 1 A Focus on Townscape: Maintaining Townscape Design to Create a Distinctive Place Identity in The Context of a Highly Dense Urban Environment

Figure 1 - Issues I Model of 200PPH.

The aim of the project for Urban Design Issues I, which was done by Group 6, was to test and deliver solutions to the following question; “How do we safeguard and deliver high levels of environmental quality in the context of increasing intensification of land use. Issues I project was generated by defining and studying how environmental qualities can be maintained within three different density scenarios of 200, 500 and 800 people per hectare (pph). All density models designed were achieved by following the compilation of a detailed literature review and analysis of relevant case studies, completion of a land budget and assumpstions and series of testing analysis on the designs.

Figure 1 - Issues I Model of 500PPH.

Figure 1 - Issues I Model of 800PPH.

Figure 1, 2, and 3 illustrates the generic model designed by Group 6 in Issues I project. From reviewing the models produced in Issues I project, Group 6 believed that they have successfully achieved all the densities required whilst still meeting the group targeted environmental qualities. They however had identified a range of outstanding sub-issues, which will then be developed by different members of Group 6 team. Further refinement is required to develop the highest density model into a place with character and individuality, which will be delivered in a section of this report. The Urban Design Issues II report (video) will focus on the topic of Townscape. The topic will combined both strategic urban design approach and detailed architectural approach for the creation of a well delivered townscape design. This outstanding issue of Townscape design from Issues I is hoped to be resolved in the Issues II project.

This topic of complexity and drama in both street flow and built environment can be achieved at all range of densities. However, it is noticed that a limit for intensification of land use probably exist. Highly dense senario might give a slight undesireable impact to other urban quality such as orientation of building for energy efficiency and active building edges, as this density senario might need to be be developed vertically, which will create the phenomenon of the ‘urban wall’ like the one happening in Hong Kong. LITERATURE REVIEW & ANALYTICAL FRAMEWORK OF TOWNSCAPE Establishing a Framework STREETSCAPE & SENSORY RICHNESS The term ‘senses’ is defined by Gibson as the system for human perception that furnish us with a variety of sensations. Humans respond by looking, listening, sniffing, tasting, and touching. Recognition of nature and location of ___FUNDEMENTAL__ sources by taste and smell system will trigger memory of emotional response, THEORY which gives character to a townscape. Human experience is affected by cognitive processes such as thinking and memory that are obtained by organizing and integrating information and making intepretations from it. Sensory experiences are important to urban development because it is a response that will encourage people to recognise a place. A distinctive place also incorprates local materials for built environments. Good street furniture should be more spontaneous and standardised, _____DENSITY_____ looking as if it has always belonged to the a place. This topic on the other hand ANALYSIS do not have any density limitations for it to be achieved. Applicable Density Range: 200+ pph

This framework table is a compilation of findings from the literature review undertaken earlier. It represent the overarching theory of 5 principles of townscape design with example diagrams of contemperory application for each principles. This theoritical framework is used to generate questions for the case study analysis. It is to determine best practice from a current development in the context of high levels density and intensifications of land use which will then become implementation guidelines for future development of townscape principles. Density study has been added to the framework to indicate appropriate application for future design. It is believed that a place is richer in terms of its townscape design if the land use is intensified. This statement could be studied further whether it could be valid, to achieve high quality environment of an urban development.

Townscape Urban Design Video by Atiqah Saleh http://youtu.be/roX6WexrIRA

This design video was produced by a Malaysian student with background qualification in the Interior Design field and it is solely an individual effort which generated research from both literature reviews and case studies to examine a sub-issue that will be explored further and resolved. This video is produced for the second stage of the Urban Design Issues II Module in the Urban Design Master Programme at Oxford Brookes University and it is an extension of the work undertaken from the first stage, which was a refinement of the topic that combined both strategic urban design approach and detailed architectural approach for the creation of a well delivered townscape design in the context of a highly dense urban environment. The second stage is the application of the findings from the first stage. The output of this video are the introductions and explanations of design principles that could be applied into this project through designing key area on the test site. Further more the design principles could also be applied into any sites for that matter and potentially becoming as instructions and recommendations for future practitioners.

Extension and Interior Refurbishment for Dato’ Azhar House, Nilai Spring Heights This project took place at a Semi Detached house in Nilai Spring Heights. The client came to MS Designer to get a consultation on ideas for extending their house towards the backyard, creating a new bedroom on their existing kitchen and relocating a new kitchen & laundry area. The client preferred the extension concept to be blended with the existing building design so it wont look oddly added to the house. The top most photo in farther left is the existing exterior of the house. Constractors came in after a five-week discussion and consultation with the client. Both exterior and interior construction took place all at the same time.

Photos showing the extended building of the house, completed meanwhile the assembling works of the kitchen cabinets and other fittings were on going. Kitchen cabinet is from Bel Kitchen Setia Alam. The interior works for the new bedroom was also in progress at the same time. The whole construction of this project was fully completed within 7 weeks.

However, they also wanted different themes for each rooms to suit for their children and guests, yet overall wanted a modern and simple touch. When I received this project, it was almost towards the end of my working period in A&I Network before I further my first degree studies. Hence the status of this project is unknown to which it may or may not had been completed by A&I Network.

New Interior Design for TERAJU Office at Surian Tower Damansara My job scope for this project was to design the grand Conference Room, Discussion Room, Staff Hall and Pantry Room. Apart from that, I was assigned to come up with drawings such as the all types of layout plans, ceiling plans, built-in & loose furniture plans and some construction drawings. It was a team work of 4 individuals; the project manager, interior designer, 3D visualiser & draughtsman. This project was the first few that I managed to join as a team member when I first entered A&I Network again as an Interior Designer. I was able to deal with suppliers and contractors, while going for site visits and inspections from the start of construction towards the completion of the office. Project was completed in July 2011.

Interior Design for The Swing Factory Cafe Kuching Sarawak A freelance job assigned to consult and propose on new interior design project of a cafe suitable for indoor golf sport. The site is on a first floor of a shoplot in Kuching, Sarawak. My scope of work did not involved the construction phase but only involved on the preliminary design stage from consulting on the design concept of the cafe, the schematic design, to coming up with 3D visuals of the cafe design to be presented to the client alongside necessary detail drawings for the construction of the project. The client specially requested for dark ceiling, brick wall finish, timber flooring, warm lighting, and most importantly fitting in a minibar, a mini golf driving range and a golf simulator area into the cafe space.

This cafe is owned by a supplier of indoor golf simulator, and he is very involved in golf himself. Golf is the core concept of this cafe, for the golfers or non-golfers to have a hangout place while being able to try on the indoor golf simulator or the mini golf driving range themselves, apart from having good food to indulge on while being in an ambience that has plenty of urban vibes around the cafe for a get together, especially with live band shows during the evenings.

This cafe has been completed around mid year 2015. Photos of the completed cafe design were shared by client.

Interior Design for Sharaf Sue House Putra Impiana, Puchong Selangor

Before moving into their new home, the couple wanted to get the whole house together with a little touch of interior designing and decorating. Since they are on a tight budget, I am challenged to come up with creative ideas to make the house well divided, uncluttered, practical and at the same time looking like a cozy home. These clients didnt want to have too many permanent or built-in pieces in the house and the pair personally picked earthy colours and warm lighitng to match with some of their pre-owened furniture such as the black leather sofa set, dining table & chairs, and other bedroom furniture.

Parts of the house with new interior designs are; Ground Floor Guest Hall, Dining Area, Dry & Wet Kitchen, Guest Room; Upper Floor - Masterbedroom, Family Hall, Bedroom 2 & 3. My job scope for this project apart from visualizing the interior concept for the client to agree on, is to design the plastered ceiling, built-in furniture, schematic colour of the interior, selecting wallpaint colours & wallpaper patterns, selecting other furniture & fittings, as well as coming up with all the construction drawings and dealing with sub-contractors & suppliers until the completion of the project. Project completed in August 2013.

Proposed Spatial Planning on ‘KPKT Housing Campaign’ at KLCC Exhibition Hall 1 & 2 for Reconsult Sdn. Bhd.

I was approached by the event planner team (Reconsult Sdn. Bhd.) to help them create an idea of traffic flow for the proposed event. Spatial planning of the hall basically was from client’s requirements, by positioning a few different types and sizes of booths according to their importance to place developers and associations. Leisure spaces such as Networking Area & Kids Area are being incorporated into the spatial planning to create a less formal ambience, divided into both sides of the hall to make visitors spread out from the entrance and moving forward towards the end of the exhibition hall. Straight-forward mini-booth designs were being proposed based on 2 required sizes; 10x10ft & 10x20ft.
