The Club Championship was a stern test of golf and identified our Club Championship champion golfers for the year. Congratulations to our winners, Member Brad Sargent in the Championship Flight, Member Craig Fordyce in the Oak Flight and Member Sue Farwell in the Women’s Flight. We were pleased to be a part of the U.S. Women’s Open and sincerely appreciate the support and enthusiasm from our Members. In June, Ray Otis, Head Golf Professional, participated and represented CordeValle in two prestigious tournaments – the PGA Professional National Championship in Verona, NY and The Barracuda Championship in Reno, NV, a PGA tour event. It has been an active summer season and there’s more to come! We are looking forward to the annual Harvest Cup, now in its 15th year, which will be held October 27th - 29th.

THE CHALLENGE Now in its’ 15th year, The Challenge was contested from August 1st to 3rd and drew our largest field ever with 40 participants. The championship included spirited competition, camaraderie and socializing with a Mardi Gras theme. For the first time, the event featured four person teams competing in a 2 net best ball of 4 format. After two exciting days of play, the team of Sue Farwell, Beth Saunders, Jeanne Harrison and Barbara Stuart emerged victorious to become our Challenge Champions. They performed a clean sweep of the competition, winning both the Horserace and the Stroke Play event. It did not come easy however, as the team bested Harjit Sekhon, Josee Feezor, Carrie Van Solinge and Kirsten Duggins in a sudden death playoff. Congratulations to our Challenge Champions and we look forward to The Challenge 2017!

DRIVING SUCCESS I’ve had some unique experiences this year that I’m grateful for and wanted to share them with you. Earlier in the year I was invited to Taiwan to help coach developing junior golfers. I traveled from course to course running day long clinics for each golf course. The trip was a major success. Five students I worked with won junior golf tournaments after our clinics. One of my players, Matt Marshall, qualified for the U.S. Open at Oakmont. I spent all week with him in Pennsylvania. He played great. Matt made the cut and earned enough money to qualify for the 2017 PGA Tour Q-School! Keep an eye on this young stud! During the U.S. Women’s Open, I helped players Lexi Thompson, Cristie Kerr and Lydia Ko, whom I’ve known prior to my time here at CordeValle. We worked on course management and techniques for successful shots on the course. It was an honor to work with these talented players. I look forward to working with you to make your game even more enjoyable! Great daily play!

GOLF TIP: The “Bump & Run” Shot The Bump and Run Shot is one of the most important shots to have in the bag when it comes to tight lies around the green, especially where there is excess space for the ball to roll out. When executed correctly, the ball should land short of the green and the lack of backspin will allow the ball to roll out to the flag. The Bump and Run is not affected by wind due to its’ low trajectory, and provides more control on hard and fast greens. For solid impact, this shot should be hit with a low sweeping motion and a shallow attack angle. The distance the ball is hit is determined by the length of swing, much like the putting stroke. The ball should be placed in the center of a narrow stance with more weight on the front foot. It is very important to keep the left wrist flat and not cup the wrists or scoop at the ball through impact. Minimal wrist movement is key. Don’t be afraid to have some width to the swing, almost like a long, exaggerated putting stroke. The Bump and run can be executed with multiple clubs although it is most common to see something like a six iron used. Club choice is decided upon based on the space available to perform the shot. It is important to remember that the amount the ball rolls out is dependent on the club chosen. For example when hitting a sand wedge the common ratio is 1:1; for a pitching wedge 1:2; nine iron 1:3; and so on. So you see, with a sand wedge the ball will roll out the same distance from its starting point to its landing point. With a pitching wedge it will roll out twice the distance, and with a nine iron the ball will roll out three times the distance. As with any short game shot, the Bump and Run requires practice and a developed intuition for gauging where to land the ball.

Tennis Tip: The Federer Effect We’ve all seen what Roger Federer looks like hitting a ball. His head turns back to the side and tilts a bit, his eyes look soft, then his head doesn’t move. His swing never seems rushed, he sees the ball well and retains extraordinary balance. While footwork and balance can be dissected and their salient points noted in Roger’s form, his vision technique remains unexplained. And perhaps it is his vision technique that is responsible for the talent he shows in other areas. To keep it simple, we know we should keep the head still, watch the contact and not the ball, and maintain control. I thought Federer was incorporating an old tennis axiom used for backhands to help see the ball. You’re looking at empty space behind the racket or down at the court surface below. The advice was meant to help steady the head and avoid lifting the eyes off the ball at contact. Some players actually did this very well, but no one did it on forehands. How does Federer doing this on forehands?

THIS IS HOW: Practice and your timing, balance, and spacing will improve and the move will become instinctual. Federer doesn’t look for the contact in front of the racket, he looks for it from the back of the racket as the photos indicate. The back of the racket lies between his eyes and ball contact, his visual focus for contact goes to the back the racket and not the front as everyone else does. Though at times the ball may be visible during contact through the string bed from behind if the ball’s high enough, it’s really looking from the back of the racket that primes this technique and not a desire to actually see the ball hit the strings. Federer is not trying to see the ball hit the strings, he is in fact seeing the racket hit the ball, specifically seeing the back of the racket flashing through. TEE TIMES | VOLUME 3

“Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening—and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.” - Arnold Palmer
