01 SAFE HAVEN manifesting physical and mental comfort

This multi-unit apartment complex was designed on a triangular shaped site in Over-The-Rhine, Cincinnati. The site provided an interesting challenge, with a 16’ elevation change between the two streets, allowing for entrance into the tenant spaces at two different levels. With the site being located in such a historic as well as up-and-coming area, each student was urged to take a look at how our designs can affect, influence, and benefit the existing culture. The focus of my design revolved around creating a safe and comfortable space, both mentally and physically, for women and children affected by domestic violence. After researching the history of the site, it was clear to me that domestic violence was an issue that needed attention. The architecture of the space instilled the idea of comfort and safety at every turn, through metaphorical leaps like the “hugging of the units that puzzled together, to more practical ways like yoga studios, doctors office, and educational centers for the residents. The facade undulates in and out, mimicking the rise and fall of the topography and providing sun shading where needed. Spring 2015 : Rhino / Grasshopper / V-Ray / Photoshop

05

THE UNITS A compilation of spacious 1,2 and 3 bedroom units play with the idea of safety by puzzle piecing together, giving the neighboring unit a metaphorical “hug. Every other unit juts out slightly from the next and has a wooden panel cladding, showing this puzzle piece effect on the exterior facade.

06

THE RESIDENTS Safe Haven serves to reach out to members of society that have been affected by domestic violence or any sort of turmoil in their lives and are seeking help in a community who understands their situation. By providing 24-7 support for the residents, an immense comfort and bond is formed.

THE SITE Over - the - Rhine is an up and coming neighborhood near downtown Cincinnati where craft brewing and farm-to-table restaurants are thriving. However, it was not always this way. As the neighborhood becomes more popular with young, wealthy adolescents, it is still occupied by many homeless and less fortunate people. The goal of this multiunit housing project was to try and mesh these two worlds seamlessly and give thought to how to better the community.

02 MISBEHAVED TECTONICS a folded plate interactive space for collaboration and focus

The site for this kung fu camp is on Mt. Airy State park in Cincinnati, Ohio. It’s vast, green landscape provided an elegant backdrop for this very modern design. The space provided a quiet, focused space for practice and performance. The design involved a plastic, easily manipulated, folded plate system that crawled throughout the site, either providing shade over indoor areas, or private walls between outdoor areas. The nature of the material allowed for transparency in spots where it was stretched, and a more opaque feel when it is bunched. The two piers at the east and west ends of the site serve to provide housing, and collaborative indoor space throughout the summer months. The pre-cast concrete mimics the folds of the plastic, bringing the idea of support throughout the entire design. Summer 2014 : Rhino / Grasshopper / Photoshop

13

THE FORM The form of the final design was inspired by an early paper folding effort at the beginning of concept design. This particular fold allowed for easy manipulation, interaction, compression and expansion, depending on the specific program that fell under it.

14

THE SPACE The intent of this karate camp was to create an interactive, social environment during the summer, as well as to allow for a functional, warm space in the winter. The undulating, plastic roof structure bolts into each of the concrete piers and can be moved around as well as removed based on the season and the function.

15

16

THE TECTONICS The form all started from a simple paper folding exercise. As I studied how to merge a diagrid structure with a folded plate system, this pre-fab tilt up system emerged. It is made up of simple eight sized units that hinge together and give structure and rigidity to the unit next to it. Strengthening the idea of unity and collaboration, this tectonic system was the perfect solution for this summer camp.

03 HIP HOP + ARCHITECTURE

a design-build community outreach endeavor In the fall of 2015 I was placed into UC’s MetroLAB, a program within the School of Architecture and Interior design that pairs students with local non-profits to design and construct innovative projects that support the infrastructure and development of the built environment through the design-build and rapid prototyping process. This semester UC MetroLAB paired with the not-for-profit organization Elementz, a local Urban Arts Center that serves as a catalyists for change in Cincinnati’s inner-city youths. Through collaboration with both the students and partners at Elementz, the MetroLAB team was able to partake in a design process informed by hip hop culture. We viewed and used Hip Hop as a form of art that can give voice to the issues that plague the “inner city” so that we can offer proactive solutions. Each student was called to design and fabricate a piece for Elementz that simultaneously provided a solution as well as thought to the current studio culture there. My personal project was a cubby wall with drawers that provided safe storage space as well as a division within the studio that created a quiet collaboration nook on one side and an open lobby on the other. Fall 2015 : Rhino / Grasshopper / Woodshop

23

THE DRAWERS There are 25 PETG drawers that slot into the cubby wall, locking into a hole that is prefabricated into the plywood. The design on the front and back of the shelves, as shown above, is a pattern derived from a piece of art that we fabricated with the students at Elementz early in the semester.

24

THE SHELF The cubby wall, 10’ long x 4’ high in total, is made out of units that notch firmly together. There are two basic elements to the design - a 4’ high vertical member and smaller horizontal pieces. By rotating every other piece, the shelf undulates back and forth, providing an interesting sculptural element.

04 LANGREE HOUSE a harmonic space for family, play, and rest The core of this design revolves around the idea that music and sound should be celebrated, not contained. The main spaces of the house are strategically placed so that the music will envelop the user, providing an atmosphere where the design not only reflects the priorities of the user, but revolves around them. The spatial strategy emphasizes the areas in the house that feature musical instruments, providing a double height area where music is to be performed. With this architectural move, the sound is carried throughout the home, celebrating what is truly core to the Langree family. The architecture also speaks to the cultural background of the family, providing indoor/outdoor space on every floor, gently reminding them of their previous home in France. The grandest example of this is the 10’ high sliding glass pocket doors at the south end of the first floor. This move will not only affect the performance space, but the fresh air will also travel up to the kitchen and dining area. With a fresh, neutral color palate featuring white oak floors, eggshell walls and charcoal accents, the atmosphere is clean yet inviting. The whites, blacks, and wood in the interior subtlety mimic the aesthetics of a piano, in order to root the user back to the core of this house: music.

THE BALANCE The idea of the layout of this row house began by studying yin and yang. Not only does the form resemble the general shape and balance of yin and yang, but the sound does as well. The simplicity and harmony within this house are evident through the architecture of the form and also through the movement of sound. 03: CHARCOAL GREY MATTE TILE

THE SITE This row house is located on the banks of the Ohio River, looking towards the skyline of downtown Cincinnati. It sits on a narrow, 30’ flat site, and sits in between to existing residential houses. There is an alley that runs behind with a connection to a garage. The challenge for this site was to find a strategy that incorporates light and green space into the house while dealing with such a small lot.

05 STADIUM EAST

a seven acre campus that celebrates live-work-play In the southeast of downtown Seattle, we worked with a seven acre site that was to be a campus for retail and office space, outdoor activities as well as a destination for evening hang outs. It was our goal to make this a place that people not only went to work, but to play. In addition, we worked to try and achieve the Living Building Challenge. Through this, I learned a large amount about sustainable systems and how to design a space in a mindful way. My role in this project was as part of the facade development team. We ran through many iterations of creating a cost effective model that blocked the sun when it wasn’t needed, and celebrated it when it was. As all six buildings in this campus were all oriented in different directions, this provided an interesting challenge. I worked mainly in grasshopper to create an optimized fin system that rotated as the faces of the buildings did. This was a team effort as part of my co-op at NBBJ and all renderings and diagrams were built as part of this team. All renderings were outsourced and are placed to serve as a visual for the project, not to represent my own work. Summer 2015 : Rhino / Grasshopper NBBJ

06 KUWAIT CANCER CENTER bringing hope and relief to all users

During my co-op at NBBJ Columbus, I was part of a team who was given the challenge of designing a Cancer Center in Kuwait. As a healthcare project, this design held many obvious challenges, but one that I didn’t expect was that of culture. As this was the first project out of the United States that I had ever worked on, it was fascinating for me to learn about the culture of Kuwait, and the priorities that came with it. Factors like cleanliness and gender segregation were to large ideas that we worked with. The schedule was also extremely pressing, and many tasks had to be extremely quickly. I became very comfortable with Revit during this process. I w a s p a r t o f t h e M e d i c a l P l a n n i n g Te a m d u r i n g t h i s p r o j e c t , a n d w o r k e d m a i n l y with healthcare planners to create thoughtful, logical layouts for this 18 story c o m p l e x . THE PLANNING As part of the medical planning team, I worked on configuring layouts for all departments of this c a n c e r h o s p i t a l . We d i d o u r b e s t t o m a x i m i z e v i e w s to the bay to the east and sunlight into the patient rooms. The two story atrium provided a wonderful source of natural light into the departments, as well. The contents shown on this page were part of a collaborative effort and are shown to serve as a visual for this project.
