Saft’s Specialty Batteries Group (SBG) division is the world leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance primary lithium and rechargeable Li-ion batteries for the electronics, defence and space industries. SBG also supplies rechargeable and nonrechargeable silver-based batteries for conventional defence applications (missiles and torpedoes).

Saft’s Industrial Battery Group (IBG) division is the world’s leading manufacturer of nickel-based battery solutions for the industrial, transport and professional electronics sectors. The IBG division also has a promising outlook medium term with the deployment of its Li-ion technology for emerging applications such as energy storage systems.

Research and Development
The quality of its R&D teams is one of the Group’s major competitive strengths, allowing it to maintain the technological leadership; Saft invested 6.6% of annual sales in R&D in 2009 including customer funded development, and grants. Applied research programmes employ over 50 people, located mainly in Bordeaux (France) and Cockeysville (US). The development teams on the various production sites employed more than 300 people at end 2008.

Sustainable development The environment is at the core of Saft’s activity The environmental impact of each type of battery is considered during design and manufacture and for each phase of the product’s life cycle. The Company’s products contribute to the increased use of renewable energies. The Group’s environmental strategy have for many years been regulatory compliance and the anticipation of environmental impacts. Saft strives to maximise the use of secondary rather than primary raw materials.

Joint ventures Saft has a significant shareholding in two associated companies Johnson Controls-Saft Advanced Power Solutions Saft leveraged its technological expertise to set up a joint venture in 2006 with the US firm Johnson Controls Inc., a Tier-1 automobile supplier, to address the fast-growing EV and HEV market on Li-ion expertise. The joint venture has already won 7 contracts in Europe and the US.
