Some general tips • Set time limits. The activities can function as short snappy appetisers or longer activities. • There is no need to prepare specific worksheets. General questions work very well. Often the outcome of what learners research is not crucial for the success of the activity e.g. the temperature in Dubai at the moment (might vary according to source). What is important is understanding the instructions that follow (e.g. double the number). • Learners can work in groups, exchange answers and report to the whole class (weighing/estimating activities). • Exam writing practice can be incorporated as well, e.g. write answers using full sentences. The bag of rice weighs 25 grams.

Beginner (A0) 1. Spot the difference You could personalise this activity and have a bank of your own pictures taken by you of places that are meaningful to your students, e.g. places in/around the school, classroom, the students’ city, etc. You could, for example, take pictures of the same place at two different times of the day, or rearrange some things in the classroom. You could also ask your students in advance to take their own pictures on two different occasions and send them to you. There is also a website spotthedifference.com where you can find professional spot the difference images and games.

2. Invisible writing Note: You can define the words according to level, e.g. nouns/idioms/phrasal verbs and revise vocabulary. Have students work in pairs and take turns to write words on each others’ backs using their fingers. You need to know your group well beforehand - remember this activity may not be culturally appropriate – always check.
