In the architectural realm, housing is central to the quality of life in a city because it impacts the physical and metaphysical conditions in which we live. This thesis redefnes health for aging populations to be about social inclusion, improving people’s quality of life in a city. It also addresses the urgent need to densify housing in an urban context to create healthy housing options for people to age in place. The backyard proposal encourages independence by designing for walkability while creating opportunities for people to stay within their own community, in a new backyard housing typology. This thesis transforms the typical vehicle accessible laneways in Toronto to create a better and more healthy way of living for all ages, but specifcally thinking of the aging population and the potential for new ways of designing socially inclusive and healthy environments for retired living.

AGE FRIENDLY NATURAL DISASTER HOUSING
35.6762° N, 139.6503° E Tokyo
Studio in Collaborative Practice Master of Architecture April 2020
Collaborators: Tejal Lad, Alicia Ahonen As climate change rapidly affects environmental conditions, many cities adjacent to bodies of water face the challenge of addressing rising water levels. Waterfront sites are the most vulnerable, therefore becoming an excellent prototype for affordable housing. In periods of natural disaster, it is important to analyze scenarios of getting to safety for all residents in a housing complex. Tokyo accommodates a very large elderly population that continues to grow. A successful housing complex for this situation introduces means of safe escape during mass fooding or earthquakes. By creating a modular development that stacks efciently in mountain clusters, two means of egress upward allows the residents safe passage to the top of the complex while the ground foods. Through intergenerational and collective/social housing, residents can form a community to ensure a unifed protection

DECIPHERING FORM | VATNAJOKULL PARAMETRIC ICE CAVE
63.4186° N, 19.0060° W Iceland
Advanced Digital Design Master of Architecture 2021 February 2020 Collaborators: Tejal Lad Iceland features many hidden gems, one is the frozen underwater atmosphere in their aged ice caves. This is the inspiration for creating a form that represents a frozen water sponge. By using Grasshopper for Rhino with additional plugins such as Voronoi and Weaverbird, I was able generate a code for a surface pattern which I then implemented on various forms to resemble frozen coral. The exercise of creating this form used techiniques of geometry manipulation inspired by natural icelandic elements such as basalt rock and the play of light entering their beautiful ice caves. all photos taken by Tejal Lad

The original form for manipulation was derived from the geometries of basalt rock formations. Basalt is a dark grey or black rock, sometimes having a columnar structure, formed by solidification of magma naturally taking a hexagonal shape. Using this as a base, I used similar geometries to loft a twisted ice form which was used as my base for developing a complex form.

Monte D’Oiro Wine Tasting Room Competition Master of Architecture 2021 July 2020
Collaborators: Tejal Lad, Alicia Ahonen In this design we are identifying phases of wine tasting in the architectural experience of this building. Carefully curated, the experience represents the same senses as the strict process of tasting wine. [Observing, Smelling and Tasting] First we observe what we are about to experience. When approaching the tasting room, the only glimpse into the vineyards beyond is through the portal between the two major building masses only providing a small taste of what is to come. When entering the building we can experience the bar on the left side which carries the “taste enhancers”. The smell of the food and beverage contribute to the second phase of the architectural experience. Finally the guests can enter the tasting room where the main view to the vineyards is featured and a smaller curated view with access to the outdoor patio. The patio acts as an extension of the landscape encouraging the sensory experience of natural elements when tasting wine.

Playfulness also brings back the joy in architectural and inhabited spaces to create a safe yet innovative space for those to learn and grow in. Creating housing soley for the elderly and children allows them to also grow in the space they live in. The site for the Auroville housing development values the connection the ground through its masterplan and the line of wall good will that connects to the central structure Matrimandir. We intended to create a ratio of designating the spaces within a unit to better suit the needs and the purpose of the space within. As an elderly person the need for visual and physical company increases to strengthen their mental and physical well-being. We determined that the private space of a unit would only need to include a bedroom and ‘bathroom’.

The cluster features two or three stories that connect to the Matrimandir and ground plane as represented through a forest atmosphere. The aim of this proposal is to maintain future and existing paths on the site by recognizing the old and the new and joining them together. The organization of the cluster pushes the boundaries of designating space and dividing masses of housing while maintaining a connection to the line of good will. This development benefits from the hexagon structure because it maximizes the efficient use of space grouping housing together with many shared public spaces. This successfully strengthens the bond between the elderly and the young.

Social Housing in the High Density Context, Workshop
Universität Stuttgart in collaboration with Space10 and The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts May 2018 Collaborators: Tejal Lad This form of collective living explores the life of a senior traveller, where the unit is designed to accommodate the use of space when the resident is away from their home and be able to re-use to another tenant as a temporary space. By using the thickened wall, the unit divides itself easily to a part that can be blocked off to keep a private section with the resident’s most precious belongings, memories, and space. The bedroom becomes the least important part of the unit for the owner, and the most valuable is the living space, which would be would be available for newcomers. The space attracts travelers, whether it be to live in or a place of transition. t he wall

urban renewal [un]wrapped
reincarnation of place cycle
A successful urban renewal strategy cannot be predicted because public response is interchangeable. A sense of place is created regardless if the outcome was intended or not. Acknowledging a healthy growth by restructuring social boundaries leaves a positive impact on highdensity spaces that can easily fall into the trap of regulated systems of growth, ultimately the destruction of the space. Prioritizing the natural fow of movement in the public realm aids the creation of renewed spaces
Over time life, beings, and nature are constantly in transition leaving an essence of their presence as they pass. Discovering abandoned remains acknowledges the site’s identity and allows for its story to reincarnate with the next occupant that comes through. The Myth: Vacancy is the end of a space. Spaces are left to die because the purpose for its ntention no longer exists, becoming displaced. Displacement can occur without physical movement by external factors that can infuence the atmosphere.. This can occur in an instant or over long periods of time of intended violence. When a space “dies” it becomes abandoned or replaced, occupied by another perhaps by choice or unintentionally. Those who are occupying share the space at different times, maintaining life and creating echoes of the past. Therefore, designing for adaptability allows the spirit of the place to continue its narrative, creating affrmative possibilities of vacancy
