Leaders of a country are chosen by the people of the country. They make important decisions that help to run the government smoothly. Let us read about some of the leaders of India in 2024.

Droupadi Murmu

She became the 15th and the youngest president of India in 2022. She is the second female president and the first president from a tribal community.

Narendra Damodardas Modi

He has been the prime minister of India since 2014. In 2024, he was re-elected as the prime minister for the third time.

Dharmendra Pradhan

He has been the education minister of India since 2021. He also served as the minister of petroleum and natural gas.

Jagdeep Dhankar

He became the 14th vice-president of India in 2022. Before this, he was a lawyer.

Amit Shah

He has been the home minister of India since 2019. In 2021, he was elected as the first minister of cooperation of India.

He has been the minister of road transport and highways since 2014. He has held this role for more than ten years.

Unique Trees

The Ancient Bristlecone Pines in the White Mountains of California are over 4,800 years old. They are one of the oldest living trees on Earth.

General Sherman Tree is a giant sequoia tree located in the Sequoia National Park in California, USA. It is the largest tree in the world by volume. It is around 2,200 years old.

The Hyperion located in the Redwood National Park of California, is the world’s tallest tree. It is more than 115 metres tall. It is over 600 years old.

The Tree of Tule located in Santa María del Tule, Mexico. This tree has the thickest trunk in the world. It is estimated to be over 2,000 years old.

The Baobab trees are known for their enormous, thick trunks and thin branches. They are found in Africa and Australia. They are often referred to as the ‘Tree of Life’ because it provides humans with water and food. Some baobab trees are thought to be thousands of years old.

National Days and Celebrations

Many important days are celebrated in our country. Let us learn more about them.

Republic Day—26 January

On this day, the Constitution of India came into effect in 1950. A parade is held every year at the Kartavya Path in New Delhi. During the parade, people from many states present performances known as Jhanki. The officers from the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force also march with their bands.

Independence Day—15 August

On this day, India gained independence from British rule in 1947. Every year, the prime minister of India hoists the flag at the Red Fort in New Delhi. He also gives a speech.

Gandhi Jayanti—2 October

This day celebrates the birth of Mahatma Gandhi. He played an important role in helping India gain its freedom from British rule. This day is observed as a national holiday.

Van Mahotsav—1 to 7 July

Van Mahotsav is a tree-planting festival. It is celebrated every year in the first week of July. It teaches people about the importance of trees. During this event, people across India plant trees.

International Day of Yoga—21 June

People celebrate this day by practising yoga. This day teaches the importance of having a healthy body and mind. It was first celebrated in 2015.

How to Play Cricket

There are two teams, each with 11 players. After winning a coin toss, a team can choose to either bat or bowl. The team which bats first sets the score or runs. The other team has to score more runs to win.

Disasters of 2024

Hurricane Beryl

On 1 July 2024, a very strong cyclone named Hurricane Beryl hit Grenada. It damaged several buildings and roadways. Over the next few days, it also affected other countries like Venezuela and Mexico.

Landslides

When a large mass of earth and rocks slides down a mountain or a slope, it is called a landslide. It causes a lot of destruction.

Wayanad Landslides

In August 2024, many landslides occurred in the Wayanad district of Kerala. It was a terrible disaster that nearly wiped out two villages, and many people lost their lives.

Animals with Super Senses

Bees have an excellent sense of smell and a very good sense of taste. They can pick up the taste of a flower’s nectar even before they touch it with their tongues.

Waterfalls in India

India is home to many waterfalls, each with its own special features. Let us learn about some beautiful waterfalls in our country.

The Dudhsagar Waterfalls are located on the Mandovi River in Goa. The waterfall is called Dudhsagar because it looks as if giant rivers of milk are flowing down.

The Chitrakote Waterfalls are located on the Indravati River in Bastar, Chhattisgarh. It is the widest waterfall in India. It is also called the Niagara Falls of India, due to their similar shape.

The Kunchikal Falls are on the Varahi River in Karnataka. It is the highest waterfall in India, with a height of 455 metres.

The Bhambavli Vajrai Waterfalls are located on the Urmodi River in Satara, Maharashtra. It is the highest waterfall in Maharashtra with a height of about 560 metres.

The Dhuandhar Falls are formed by the Narmada River. It is located in the Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh. It is so named because of its white, smoky look.

The Nohkalikai Waterfalls are located in Sohra, Meghalaya. These falls are mainly fed by rainwater, making them strongest during the monsoon season.

It is important to protect the environment around waterfalls to maintain the balance of the ecosystems and ensure that future generations can enjoy their beauty.

Our Role Models

Mother Teresa (1910–1997)

She devoted her life to helping the poor. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in the year 1950. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

Nelson Mandela (1918–2013)

He was the first black president of South Africa. As a freedom fighter for South Africa, he was put in prison for 27 years. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

Mahatma Gandhi (1869–1948)

His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. His birthday on 2 October, is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti. He believed in Ahimsa, or non-violence.

Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (1931–2015)

He was a popular space scientist. He helped to develop India’s missiles named the Prithvi and the Agni missiles. That is why he is popularly known as the Missile Man of India. He served as the 11th president of India.

Albert Einstein (1879–1955)

He was a German scientist. His studies have helped us to better understand how the universe works. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921.

Kalpana Chawla (1962–2003)

She was an Indian-born American astronaut. She was the first woman of Indian origin to go to outer space. She travelled to space for the first time in 1997, on the Space Shuttle, Columbia. She went on her second space mission in 2003.

These people achieved their success through determination and hard work. They inspire us to keep trying, even when faced with challenges or setbacks.

Taste of India 13

India has a lot of different food items from many places. Each has a special flavour. Let us read about some of these delicious dishes.

Dosa is a famous thin and crispy dish from South India. It is made from a batter of rice and lentils (dals). It is usually served with sambhar and coconut chutney.

Dal Bati Churma is a popular Rajasthani dish. Bati is a baked wheat ball. Churma is a sweet powder made of wheat, ghee and sugar.

Hyderabadi biryani is a famous biryani of India. It is a mix of rice, spices, meat and vegetables. It is often cooked in big pots and served with raita or salad.

Dhokla is a popular Gujarati snack. It is soft and spongy and is usually made of besan. It is served with chilies and coriander chutney.

Chole Bhature is a popular dish from North India. The chole is a spicy curry, and the bhature are puffy, round, deep-fried breads. It is mostly served with onions and lassi.

India’s diverse food teaches us to respect different cultures and celebrate unity in diversity.

The Olympics are a multi-sport tournament that is held every four years. The 2024 Olympics were held in Paris, France. Let us learn about India’s performance at the 2024 Olympics.

Diseases and the Ways to Stop Them

Diseases can make people unwell and affect how they function. They are mainly caused by tiny organisms called germs. Germs can enter our bodies in many ways. Here are some common ways that germs spread.

Water-borne diseases are caused when the water we drink becomes dirty. Sometimes, they are also caused by the water we use for other purposes. Example: Typhoid and cholera.

Food-borne diseases are caused by eating food that contains germs. These germs can be found in undercooked food or food that has not been cleaned properly. Examples: Dysentery and diarrhoea.

Air-borne diseases pass from one person to another when a sick person coughs or sneezes without covering their mouth. The germs travel through the air and get into our bodies. Examples: Common cold and the flu.

How to Prevent Diseases

Wash your hands very well with soap and water.

Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.

Drink filtered or boiled water. Carry water in clean water bottles when outside.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Get timely vaccinations to stay healthy and avoid diseases.

Festivals Around the World

Diwali

Profit and Loss
