Building Viability Into Your Future Network Through Enclosure Modularity As communication network architectures continue to migrate equipment outward from central offices, field installations of active equipment, power, and other network elements are becoming much more common and significant. Foundational to all of these installations is the enclosure, or cabinet, that houses and protects equipment. Unless the enclosure is customdesigned for a specific application, the most critical factor that most network engineers face when selecting an enclosure is this: Will the enclosure provide long-term protection? Again, unless the enclosure is engineered to hold a specific piece of equipment, when solutions from various enclosure manufacturers are compared, most “standard” enclosures are simply described as a metal box. Differentiating features– especially ones that create a significant advantage– are not obvious. However, an enclosure system engineered in a modular design presents several advantages when viewed as an overall solution rather than an individual box. A modular platform takes the following common components, with options within each component, to help create the ideal solution: • • • •

Frame Top panel Doors and/or hatches Side panels – with various entry plates for electrical/cooling equipment • Interior equipment mounting rails This innovative approach to enclosure construction surpasses traditional “fixed” enclosure designs, with several key advantages. Flexibility and Options The design of a modular platform opens the door to network possibilities. Users start with basic height options, and from there, using the basic core components, the enclosure can be constructed to meet a variety of requirements.

Choosing a certain type of door or hatch can accommodate open-loop or closed-loop cooling. Solar and insulated versions of top panels and hatches provide further configuration possibilities. A variety of electrical side panels can handle load centers, AC panels, and various outlets. In short, rather than ordering a completely different enclosure for each application, a modular design enables standardization on a single platform, with a multitude of options within that platform. A modular solution manages crucial outside plant applications including addressing WiMAX requirements, deploying microwave equipment, and installing a power or battery system.

Typical outside plant installations often start with one enclosure of equipment. As a residential or business area grows, more enclosures are required. Telect’s modular enclosures enable simple expansion. Installers can add enclosures and create a lineup with little difficulty. Modular side panels can be removed or changed to accommodate adjacent enclosures, maintaining the protection of required equipment. With this versatility, growth is no longer a matter of replacing enclosures or physically altering the integrity of the cabinet by cutting, drilling, or bolting through walls.

Similarly, modular enclosures can be easily altered when in-field requirements change. Let’s say additional equipment increases the thermal load capacity in the enclosure. With a universal door design, the user can remove the old cooling system and install a new one— all in the field. In addition, if equipment upgrades alter access or electrical requirements, enclosure panels can be removed in the field and replaced with the appropriate set for the new equipment.

the building blocks For those who deploy a large number of enclosures on a frequent basis, modularity also provides the advantage of being able to stock components in a “mix and match” fashion. Rather than amassing an inventory of “fixed” designs that may become obsolete before they are completely utilized, enclosures are assembled as needed. This configure-as-needed approach manages capital expenditures, inventory, and overall costs. Familiarizing installers with a standardized system will also help to accelerate system installation, deployment, and startup, thereby maximizing revenue-earning potential. 25
