IN HONORARIUM Recognizing the contributions of Dr. Cullen W. Banks for his commitment and dedication to the community, the Twenty Pearls Foundation, Inc. dedicated the charitable golf scramble in his honor. During the 1950s, Dr. Banks became the first black physician to have full privileges in the county hospital, Alachua General, in Gainesville. Dr. Banks received the 1996 Certificate of Merit, the highest state medical honor awarded by the Florida Medical Association. In 1988, the Rotary Club of Gainesville honored and presented Dr. Banks with the organization’s annual “Service Above Self” award. Dr. Banks passed away on April 23, 2013 in Gainesville. He was an avid golfer who integrated several courses in Alachua County and surrounding communities. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mrs. LaKay Banks and their children, Colleen, Garry, Barry and Maritza.

In August 2013, the City of Gainesville renamed a portion of Southeast 11th Avenue in honor of the late Dr. Cullen W. Banks.

TARGET I EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT ASCENDSM: Achievement, SelfAwareness, Communication, Engagement, Networking, and Developmental Skills. ASCENDSM is our sorority’s signature youth enrichment program designed to motivate, engage, and assist high school students in reaching their maximum potential. We launched the program in January 2015 and have served over 20 Alachua County youth representing 6 high schools. The participants attend monthly tutoring sessions hosted by SEEK Community Center Inc. at First Presbyterian Church to prepare them for college and careers. Participants also engage in community service projects such as roadside clean-ups and stuffing socks for the homeless. They create vision boards, learn how to develop their brand, and understand how to safely navigate social media awareness and present themselves in a positive light. Think HBCUSM: This is a national campaign to highlight Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and their contributions to the sorority and society. We host workshops for high school students and parents about different colleges and universities in the state of Florida. Participants engage in interactive discussions about succeeding in college and steps leading to fulfilling careers. Participants also receive information about more than 400 scholarships and programs that assist students and parents in financing a postsecondary education. They learn tips on how to properly complete scholarship applications and find additional funding sources. One Million BackpacksSM: Promote the learning process by providing substantial support to students where members donate backpacks and school supplies to students in their communities. The goal of the sorority is to collectively donate one million backpacks over a 4-year period. To date, Mu Upsilon Omega and Twenty Pearls Foundation Inc. have donated over 50 backpacks.

TARGET II HEALTH PROMOTION The four-year International Program of Alpha Kappa Alpha is entitled “Launching New Dimensions of ServiceSM.” Some of the health partnerships that have been formed include: The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the Alzheimer’s Association and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. The Twenty Pearls Foundation, Inc., the charitable and educational arm of the Mu Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., strives to assist the chapter in the implementation of community service activities and collaborate with community organizations for educational as well as other purposes. These goals are achieved through programs like the Pink Dress Luncheon, participation in East Gainesville’s Relay for Life and Pink Goes Red for a Day. Through these programs, participants are able to learn more about the health conditions that affect our community, contribute to funding for research as well as raise awareness. The Pink Dress Luncheon is an annual program held in October that educates and informs women about the research surrounding breast cancer and allows them to learn information on when to receive mammograms and what treatment options are currently available.

TARGET III FAMILY STRENGTHENING Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Family Strengthening Programs will target critical issues facing many families, including lack of food, shelter and financial means. Community based Childhood Hunger Initiatives will be launched in partnership with local agencies, food banks and community pantries. The Family Seasonal Wraps℠ Program will be offered as the sorority sponsors a major initiative to collect and donate hats, gloves, socks, scarves, coats, sweaters and other seasonal wraps for families in need. Fiscal Responsibility Programs will be initiated as members work with partner organizations and families to help increase their understanding of budgeting, basic financial planning and benefits of home ownership.
TARGET IV ENVIRONMENTAL OWNERSHIP Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will implement high impact programs to provide healthy environments and improve the quality of life in the underserved communities. The AKA 1908 Playground Project℠ will be launched to ensure children have safe and inviting places to play. Sorority members will restore and renew 1,908 existing community and school playgrounds with its Restore, Refresh and Renew Project℠. Through its Acts of Green Program℠ members will promote environmental sustainability by encouraging recycling, litter prevention and waste management through daily green efforts in local communities.

TARGET V
Sorority members will implement the UNA-USA Global Classrooms Project to prepare today's youth for an increasingly global and complex society. Alpha Kappa Alpha members will work in partnership with the UNA-USA (United Nations Association) to expand understanding of the UN, its mission and focus. A biennial Intergenerational Model U.N. Conference will be convened. Members of Mu Upsilon Omega contribute generously to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF.) and the Twenty Pearls Foundation, Inc. also Co-Sponsors with the Gainesville Chapter of the United Nations Association - USA for UN Day in October at the Gainesville Women’s Club. Our very own Dr. Mildred HillLubin serves on the Board of Directors for UNA-USA.
