very year after Thanksgiving, the national news is rife with tales of Black Friday tramplings, fights and allaround bad behavior — all in the name of holiday shopping.

Here in Telluride, thankfully, the post-Turkey Day shopping tradition is much more wellmannered. There’s no elbow throwing, no middle-of-the-night lines and no mad rushes for flatscreen televisions. Instead, Telluride has Noel Night, when retailers illuminate

downtown with lights and decorations, put out food and drinks and offer deep discounts for customers through creative means — letting people reach into grab bags, play bingo and even try their luck at pull-ups to earn their deals.

The annual holiday tradition is a way to shop locally, celebrate small businesses and find great deals on items for everyone on your list. The following is a peek into some of Telluride’s shops. It’s not a rundown of every store, so make sure to get out there and check out Noel Night for yourself. The temperatures are expected to drop into the single digits this week, which makes cashmere apparel sound all the more appealing. Good thing CashmereRED has a full stock of fine Scottish cashmere goods, from cloud-soft hats to colorful scarves and wraps. The retailer will be offering Get Your Goat grab bag discounts of 10-30 percent off on Noel Night. Owner Caci Grinspan said their techsavvy gloves (which work with smartphone screens) make great gifts. The store also has jewelry, sunglasses and stuffed animals. And, Grinspan said, “nothing says holidays like a cashmere sweater.” Telluride Trappings & Toggery also has plenty of cozy winter apparel in stock, including an impressive inventory of women’s sweaters, jackets for men and boots for all. The store will be offering grab-bag discounts of at least 20 percent until 1 p.m. and then 10-50 percent off until close — as well as the alwaysdelicious snacks. Along with its normal supply of jewelry, purses, scarves and socks, the Toggery has added home goods such as

frames, measuring cups and dishes. Two Skirts is also offering Noel Night discounts all day, with a grab bag of chocolate discounts and free glass water bottles for every purchase over $500. With chunky statement jewelry from Avant Garde, glittery clutches, cashmere infinity scarves and faux leather leggings, the highend boutique is great for fashionistas. Frye Boots, sweater dresses, headbands, socks and knit hats are available at Down to Earth, which features a flat discount of 20 percent early in the day and 10-50 percent off grab-bag discounts later on. Apotheca Pharmacy is holding a grand-reopening party on Noel Night to celebrate its new, spacious home at 129 W. Colorado Ave. Along with prescriptions, Apotheca is a great source of natural remedies, herbs, candles, tinctures, soaps, vitamins, teas, chocolates and other small gifts, which owner Michelle Common said makes it a wonderful place to find stocking stuffers. Apotheca will be offering grab-bag discounts of 10-50 percent off, food and more. Telluride Music Company is getting into the giving spirit this year by donating a portion of its Noel Night sales to the Lyons Flood Relief Fund as well as the Lyons-based Planet Bluegrass, which was hit hard by the floods in September. Speaking of tickets, stop by the Sheridan Opera House from noon-7 p.m. for grab-bag discounts of 10-50 percent off of ticket purchases. The Opera House is bringing everyone from The Wailers to The Oh Hellos and Jefferson Starship to the Opera House this winter. And music is the gift that keeps on giving. Telluride Music Company isn’t the only store raising money for a great cause on Noel Night. Telluride Sports will match half of every dollar donated to Angel Baskets through the store this season. “Last year, we raised over $20,000 for Angel Baskets, and this year we want to get to $25,000,” said Nathan Frerichs, sales and marketing manager. “Noel Night is a huge push for us for Angel Baskets.” Of course, there is also a huge outdoor merchandise inventory between Telluride Sports’ main street location, its Camel’s Garden location and its Patagonia location. The stores will be offering all-day grab bag discounts of 10-40 percent off, and are great See NOEL NIGHT, Page 18

he Ah Haa School for the Arts is offering several ways of giving the gift of art this holiday season — from buying affordable and locally crafted pieces to making your own. Ah Haa has brought back its Affordable Art for the Holidays exhibition, which features original fine art by local and regional artists that has a value of no more than $600. The exhibit showcases small paintings, ceramic sculptures, photographs, metal work, block prints, jewelry and more. Patrons can take advantage of 10-percent-off discounts during a Noel Night reception on Wednesday. An additional reception will take place the evening of Dec. 14, during this year’s Holiday Prelude Art Walk, from 5-8 p.m. The show is up in Ah Haa’s Daniel Tucker Gallery. Along with artists’ work, Ah Haa will be selling gift certificates, Telluride Portraits Photography Prize books, Ah Haa cookbooks and more. Those who wish to create with their own hands can take advantage of the final class in Ah Haa’s Artful Gift Series, offering affordable opportunities to learn new skills and make gift-able art. NOEL NIGHT HOLIDAY

GIVE THE GIFT OF A TREE Plant-a-Tree certificates available for holiday gifts

A

donation to the U.S. Forest Service Planta-Tree Program is a great holiday gift idea for that special person who has everything and loves the natural world. For a minimum donation of $20, the giver receives a certificate on behalf of a person or family, and 10 seedlings are reserved to reforest a burned area on the San Juan National Forest. It costs the Forest Service about $2 per tree to collect the seeds, grow the seedlings in a nursery and plant the trees. Plant-A-Tree donations are used to reforest areas where fires or other natural disturbances have damaged forests. Tree planting provides future wildlife habitat, decreases soil erosion and helps with spring snow retention, while also helping to sequester carbon and provide oxygen. This year’s donations will go directly toward a reforestation project scheduled for the spring of 2015 in the area burned by the Missionary Ridge Fire around Vallecito Reservoir. “Some burned areas will reforest naturally on their own, but on southwest facing slopes and harsher environments, regeneration may take centuries,” said Gretchen Fitzgerald, San Juan National Forest forester. “We focus tree planting in areas where large-scale, stand-replacement fires have occurred outside of wilderness areas, and where there is virtually no probability that the area will reforest on its own in the next 50-100 years.” Donations can be made in person by cash, check or credit card at San Juan National Forest offices. Credit card donations can also be made over the phone, or checks can be mailed to San Juan National Forest Plant-ATree Coordinator, 15 Burnett Court, Durango, CO 81301. Checks should be made payable to USDA Forest Service, with “Plant-A-Tree, San Juan National Forest” noted in the memo portion of the check. The program is considered a charitable donation by the IRS. Requests may take a few days to process, and contributions cannot be refunded. The donor receives a personalized certificate to document the gift. The U.S. Forest Service established the Plant-A-Tree Program in 1983 to allow donors to contribute money toward reforestation on National Forests to memorialize loved ones or commemorate births, weddings or special events, while helping to improve the environment. Seedlings planted with the donations are not designated on the ground as a memorial or individually recognized but instead become part of the forest ecosystem. For more information, visit the San Juan National Forest website at: www.fs.usda.gov/ main/sanjuan/workingtogether, or contact the San Juan Public Lands Center at 970 247-4874.

“The Wizard of Oz” is the timeless classic about Dorothy’s adventures in the Land of Oz and her journey to return home. You have seen it countless times on TV, but never like this. On the big screen, in color and fully remastered this year, you will discover a whole new world. But beware. Although this one hour and 45 minute film is rated PG, this new print will make the Wicked Witch of the West and her flying monkeys even more frightening than you remember.

Nugget Nights “The Wizard of Oz” plays Wednesday and Thursday at 4, 6:15 and 8 p.m. The movies are free, but popcorn purchases help raise money for Angel Baskets and are encouraged.

he Telluride Film Festival, which now operates the Nugget Theatre, is continuing the nineyear tradition of Nugget Nights — two free nights of movies in early December. On tap this year: six screenings over two nights of the iconic Judy Garland film “The Wizard of Oz.” Along with co-sponsors Katrine and Bill Formby (owners of the Nugget Building) and Marta Tarbell and Seth Cagin, (owners of the Watch Newspapers), the Telluride Film Festival invites the community to attend the screenings, which take place Wednesday and Thursday at 4, 6:15 and 8 p.m. Again this year, Angel Baskets will receive a $10 donation from the Formbys for each popcorn sold during Nugget Nights (any sized bag). Depending on popcorn sales, this could mean between $2,000-$4,000 for Angel Baskets. Consider doing your part in supporting Angel Baskets and the community by enjoying a free movie at the Nugget Theatre, treating yourself to some popcorn and participating in all Noel Night festivities.

ut your own holiday tree this season. Christmas tree permits, which allow people to cut holiday trees on National Forest and BLM lands in southwestern Colorado, are now on sale at federal lands offices and selected retail outlets. Permits come with a brochure explaining regulations and helpful tips. A BLM permit is valid for trees located on BLM lands only, just as a Forest Service permit is only valid for trees located on National Forest System lands. No cutting is permitted in campgrounds or other recreation/ facility sites, wilderness and/or near lakes, streams or in wetland areas. National Forest/BLM offices also sell maps and offer free advice on the best areas for tree harvesting, and the best species of tree to cut. ure, you could buy that flat screen TV or logostudded designer handbag. But wouldn’t it be a bit more exciting to have a private dinner cooked for you by celebrated chef Tyler Florence? San Francisco tech entrepreneur Trevor Traina certainly thinks so, which is why he’s launched IfOnly.com, a website where you can buy encounters with stars in the culinary, sports and entertainment world, with part of the proceeds going to charity. The recently launched site has already seen more than $500,000 in donations to charity. Traina’s emporium of experiences come at all price levels, from a modest $35 for a Twitter follow-back from Food Network star Chef Michael Chiarello to $48,000 to have Florence help you design a dream kitchen. Bonus: He’ll cook you a celebratory dinner in it when it’s done. And it also boasts an impressive depth of talent. A well-known figure in the San Francisco Bay

area business and social circles, Traina and his wife, Alexis Swanson Traina, creative director at the Napa Valley’s Swanson Vineyards, are actively involved in the worlds of wine and food, fashion, sports and philanthropy. Traina sees the website tying into two trends. On one hand he sees a rising sense that money spent on an experience can be more satisfying than acquiring yet another luxury good, something partially brought on by the recession. Meanwhile, the link between fans and the famous has grown stronger, fostered by social media and reality shows. “Thanks to Twitter and Facebook and cable TV, we’ve been let into the lives of many of the top luminaries, but we’ve still not been allowed into their living room or their kitchen or wherever they work,” says Traina. “What IfOnly is doing is bridging that last bit of the gap.” The IfOnly model taps into a growing — though still small — trend of online giving, says Steve MacLaughlin, a fundraising expert with Blackbaud.

EW YORK (AP) — The holidays bring out the inner-coffee table book obsessive in gift buyers. They’re easy, weighty and satisfying to give. You’ve done your job with your pricey treat. A few to consider for music lovers, history buffs, foodies, fashionistas and more: MUSIC “The Beatles: The BBC Archives: 1962-1970,” by Kevin Howlett, Harper Design, $60. The Fab Four’s years on air at home, as told in transcripts of interviews, photos and internal documents. For young readers, the music industry vets offer an introduction to 27 legends, including James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding. Includes two CDs totaling 27 tracks. HISTORY & MEDIA “Smithsonian Civil War: Inside the National Collection,” edited by Neil Kagan and Stephen G. Hyslop, Smithsonian Books, $40. From the story of Winchester, the swift-footed horse of Union commander Philip Sheridan, to Winslow Homer sketches. “Vietnam: The Real War,” by The Associated Press, $40. Mostly black-and-white, up-close photography of the fog and debris of war, including an injured John McCain and the cut of a knife into the belly of a Viet Cong prisoner under interrogation by a South Vietnamese soldier. FILM & PHOTOGRAPHY “Guillermo del Toro, Cabinet of Curiosities: My Notebooks, Collections and Other Obsessions,” by del Toro and Marc Scott Zicree, Harper Design, $60. Notebooks, sketches and interviews from the mind of the “Hellboy” and “Pan’s Labrynth” creator. Thoughts from Neil Gaiman, Ron Perlman and others. “Humans of New York,” by Brandon Stanton, St. Martin’s Press, $29.99. Includes 400 color portraits from the meandering chronicler of the New York condition. “The Wizard of Oz: The Official 75th Anniversary Companion,” by Jay Scarfone and William Stillman, Harper Design, $40.
