At the tender age of 16, he got his first big break when French ski company CoreUPT picked up a selfedited ski video shot of he & his friends freeskiing in Telluride's Terrain Park. Gus has been a force to be reckoned with ever since. He had a clean sweep of the Aspen/Snowmass Open slopestyle and halfpipe skiing events in both 2010 and 2012, which he followed up by winning the 2011 and 2012 AFP overall titles. In the 2012 season, he competed in more than 23 events and took dual wins in big air and slopestyle at the final event of the season, the AFP World Championships. After putting his time in, 2013 proved to be a breakthrough season for Gus. With over 20 competitions under his belt, he took second at the Olympic venue halfpipe World Cup in Sochi, Russia and won his first X Games medal in Tignes: a bronze in slopestyle. Obvious talent aside, Gus's tenacious spirit and drive propelled him toward his dream of an Olympic medal and the opportunity to showcase slopestyle skiing to the world, the sport he helped to evolve. A shining example of what you can accomplish when you set your mind to it - with a little help from your family, friends, & community. The only Telluride athlete ever to make the US Winter Olym-

Ambassador Richard Holbrooke
was
known as an elegant, eloquent man and a powerful national leader with a reputation for not pulling his punches. His no-nonsense personality was stamped on every word he spoke and wrote. Holbrooke died unexpectedly in December 2010 from complications of a torn aorta. But as evidenced by history, “Pride and power fall when the person falls, but discoveries of truth form legacies that can be built upon for generations.” (quote by Criss Jami). Richard Holbrooke devoted his life to creating such a legacy. Clearly no kitchen sink category can capture the breadth and depth of such a man - his resume as long and diverse as they come. In 1994, President Clinton nominated him to be Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs and Chief U.S. Envoy to the former Yugoslavia. In 1999, Holbrooke was appointed Permanent United States Representative to the United Nations. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize multiple times. In addition to diplomat,
Holbrooke’s distinguished resume lists magazine editor (Newsweek, Foreign Affairs), author (“To End A War,” “Counsel to the President,” the memoirs of Clark Clifford), Peace Corps director, investment banker, and driving force in the non-profit sector (president/CEO Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Asia Society). On a more personal note, Holbrooke had a long love affair with Telluride, after first being brought to town by part-time locals Dick Ebersol and Susan St. James. Telluride became his sanctuary, one of the few places on the planet this peripatetic public figure could kick back and exhale. "Once I arrive in town, I am never in a car. I love the fact someone like me can walk down Main Street, run into people I know, and enjoy a casual conversation. A strong sense of community and generosity of spirit are high on the list of things that distinguish Telluride from other great ski resorts such as Aspen and Vail, St. Moritz and St. Anton, anonymous places, where people think nothing of trampling one another to get onto the lifts.” Even in his Telluride sanctuary, Holbrooke couldn't just turn off who he was. “Public service is the thread. I believe people who live in a community and love it – the world community, Telluride – should give something back. Locally, that’s why I serve on the Telluride Foundation,” he explained. Holbrooke lived up to his altruistic reputation right till the end, with his final breath he joked with his doctor, "you've got to end this war in Afghanistan." EDUCATION Telluride Style
Telluride delivers basic bricks & mortar education with excellence, but learning is all about leveraging the region's unique assets – small size, big mountains, natural beauty, brain trust, deep pockets, depth & breadth of non profits – to provide customized & potentially life-changing experiences for students of all ages.
Bright Futures
One of 30 early childhood councils in Colorado. Telluride currently has 10 programs serving children 18 months to 5 years (3 centers serve ages 18 months to 3 years & 7 centers serve ages 3 to 5). Each program offers an academic component, but with its own unique spin. One program stresses art, music and world peace; one is a strong Montessori environment; others deliver social, emotional & experiential education, including walkabouts to explore Telluride's environment. www.brightfuturesforchildren.org
Telluride R-1 School
Telluride's public school is consistently ranked among the best in Colorado and the recipient of countless distinguished awards, including one for working with autistic students. The school offers a wide variety of advanced placement classes in social sciences, math, humanities & art; and is also a partner in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) Education Coalition. To further enrich the basic curriculum, local non-profits partner with the school to share their special areas of interest. Each year the community gives between $80-$115K worth of financial and academic scholarships to students. www.tellurideschool.org
Telluride Mountain School
The school strongly believes in experiential education and several times a year takes students into the canyons, wilderness areas, & rivers surrounding Telluride. Project-based learning is a part of the classroom, with students doing mock trails in history class and snow pack investigations in science class. The school also offers student athletes (skiers & boarders) opportunities to travel to competitions - promoting critical thinking, aesthetic expression, & ethical behavior. www.telluridemtnschool.org
Telluride Academy Telluride's award-winning summer program for over 30 years. Each program is capped at 12 students to maintain a feeling of interconnectedness among students & instructors. Its curriculum, balanced skillfully among 100+ unique after school & summer enrichment programs targets young people ages 5-18. They also offer tuition assistance to ensure a diverse student population. www.tellurideacademy.org Ah Haa School for the Arts
Throughout the year, Ah Haa offers classes for beginners & seasoned artists, including over 120 classes for kids. Painting, stained glass, jewelry, ceramics are mainstays - classes like welding and culinary
classes up the ante a bit. All have a focus on developing a love of art that will last a lifetime. www.ahhaa.org
Young People's Theater Building confidence and a more refined understanding of self, the Sheridan Arts Foundation Young People's Theater helps students from 3 - 18 unlock what's hidden inside & discover their potential. www.sheridanoperahouse.com Palm Dance Directed by a former Joffrey Ballet dancer, Palm Dance offers a full range of dance classes for children & young adults, including summer intensives, master classes, & workshops with visiting instructors. www.telluridepalm.com Telluride Choral Society There are 3 distinct groups for 3rd - 12th graders. The three choirs perform in WinterSing and concerts throughout the year. www.telluridechoralsociety.org Pinhead Institute A Smithsonian affiliate institute offering science-based programs for kids and teens. They import leading scientists into local schools to lead experiments, workshops, & field expeditions. Stargazing, punk science, & summer science camps are other examples of engaging programs. www.pinheadinstitute.org Wilkinson Public Library Often described as the "heart" of Telluride and a true community center, programming at the library begins with story time and summer reading programs, and then blossoms into teen services, offering out-of-the-box programs like chess club, hip hop club, & cooking club. While reading is a big part of the programs, kids are also encouraged to be creative through art, media, & writing. wwwtelluridelibrary.org Read this article, written by Susan Viebrock of Telluride Inside and Out, in its entirety at www.TrulyTelluride.com. creating better lives for animals ANIMAL
enhancing human life in return F O U N DAT I O N
Telluride local Katja Wichland, a self-confessed bleeding heart animal lover, has always been enamored with the world of animal rescue - having welcomed several rescued pets into her own home. With the support of her husband Josh Rapaport, a broker at Telluride Properties, the Telluride Animal Foundation (a nonprofit organization) was born in 2011 with one mission in mind, to reduce the number of homeless pets. TAF actively supports existing shelters and sanctuaries, sponsors spay/neuter initiatives to fight euthanasia, provides food for struggling owners in an effort to keep their animals within their care, and networks rescue animals to increase awareness and adoption rates. Funding for the foundation's initiatives are predominately raised through its Main Street storefront, the Telluride Thrift Shop. Chock full of donated treasures (from Telluride's affluent and locals alike), one can hope to score anything from clothes and recreational gear to furniture and decor. And don't forget to check out the pets available for adoption - their cute little faces stare back from the windows of the store as if saying, "pick me, pick me". As of April 2014, TAF has donated out almost $400,000 and spayed/neutered almost 5,000 animals. Harnessing the power of social media and local advertising, they continually facilitate a network of adoptable animals from regional rescues so people have a wide selection when they decide to bring a new pet into their family. Check out their website for more information about TAF and the local rescues they support - plus links to view pets available for adoption.

How do we compare?
There are three main factors that combine to make a ski resort especially appealing and almost all resorts come up short in at least one of these. Not Telluride.
The first and most important is terrain. Almost all mountains skew towards either more or less advanced skiers. Jackson Hole, for instance, is renowned for its extreme and expert terrain, and in that regards it has few peers. At the opposite end of this spectrum are places like Okemo and Deer Valley, which have focused on families, beginners, and groomer lovers at the expense of challenging skiing.
