TELLURIDE I THE REMIX: I
A Cultural Engine, Past & 2.0 written by Susan Viebrock of tellurideinside.com
I SO M E N E R D I L I O US H I S TO RY: I
Size did not matter. The organization rebranded as Telluride Arts, formerly The Telluride Council for the Arts & Humanities, Telluride’s very first nonprofit, was small but determined, incubating two powerhouse festivals, Film and Bluegrass, and a beloved Chamber Music. The nonprofit also acted as an arts information, advocacy, and education agency. But when the clock ticked into the millennium, the vibe around the Arts Council inexplicably shifted: “TCAH” became marginalized and seemed to be heading the way of dinosaurs and dodos, becoming another way to spell “extinction.” By 2009, however, a diehard board put out an all-points alert for a change maker. She came out of a local arts agency in rural Washington State.
The Telluride Council for the Arts & Humanities emerged in November 1971, just one year before the ski resort officially opened for business, in the context of a sleepy, remote mountain mining town, a place left over from an era when mostly-European immigrants staked their future in America on hard labor in the 350 miles of tunnels underneath the mountains surrounding our box canyon. It was a place local families had lived for generations; a countryside where wolverines and grizzlies, thought to be extinct, roamed freely; where tarpaper sheepherders’ shacks were home to many; and the population included an improbable mix of former miners, cowboys, and young Fibroids, aka folks who loved to make quilts and knit pretty things.
Under Kate Jones, who began her tenure as executive director in 2010, Telluride Arts not only launched many new arts-based initiatives, it also established the Telluride Arts District as a destination of fearless creativity. Kate dreams of her organization taking the leadership position in promoting a robust and flourishing grassroots arts community that drives a regional culture of bold artistic innovation and ongoing inspiration. A passion for and focus on creativity will help define Telluride as more than just another ski resort, however unique, with its dazzlingly lit snowy peaks, outrageous starlit skies, wall-to-wall summer blockbuster festivals – and mega moxie.
Back then, according to former denizen and writer Oleh Lysiak, the town, though tricked out in Victorian finery, “… trailed the reputation of a whore, with the heart of a banker, and the soul of a scammer.” In those days, half of Main Street was still boarded up and lots of people were leaving, muttering darkly after the Idarado closed for good. Picture the historic Sheridan Opera House today, all gussied up after a major face-lift several years ago. Back then, the venue was a camping ground for derelicts; broken glass and upturned mattresses were everywhere. But the acoustics were still great, some say

perfect, so that was where the Telluride Chamber Music Festival performed for the first time in 1974, sharing the stage with Gloria Swanson, one of the honored guests of the first Telluride Film Festival, again both kickstarted by the Arts Council, which was itself officially incorporated that year as a not-for-profit 501(c)3, whose mission was to “promote, stimulate and foster the growth of the arts and humanities within the state of Colorado.” By the 1980s, Film Fest, Bluegrass and Chamber had become autonomous nonprofits. At the same time, a task force created what is now the Commission for Community Assistance, Arts and Special Events (CCAASE) to parcel out art dollars from Town Council. But TCAH, having given the region a gentle push down the road into the mainstream, remained a force on campus for years. In the 1980s, TCAH produced a performing arts series at the Sheridan Opera House. The nonprofit helped establish the Commission for Arts and Special Events fund and a small grants program for artists, both in 1986. TCAH also produced exhibits throughout town to encourage the collection of local art.
• Expanded and enhanced First Thursday Art Walk. (Number of participating venues tripled from 7 to 21.) • Created Twenty(by)Telluride, designed to showcase the depth and breadth of the talent involved in local nonprofits. Each presenter has exactly 20 slides and each slide is shown for exactly 20 seconds, challenging them to be precise. • Rebranded TCAH, changing the nonprofit’s name to Telluride Arts. • Established Gallery 81435 to showcase more contemporary, edgier art.
In the 1990s, TCAH implemented an art-in-public-spaces project and produced a Cultural Master Plan (1996). It also took a leadership and advocacy position in the development of a performing arts space, now the Palm Theatre.
• Led the process to update the Telluride Cultural Master Plan.
Over the years the mission of what was TCAH has remained largely unchanged, though as Telluride Arts, its ethos became more defined and its work more strategic.
With the clear goal of Telluride Arts acting as the bellwether for Telluride’s cultural economy, bigger changes would come soon enough, largely on the heels an updated Telluride Cultural Master Plan and the creation of the Telluride Arts District.
Telluride Arts continues to birth start-ups that wind up contributing to an evolving creative environment. Programs are prioritized through community planning and serve to elevate and expand a remarkable number of organizations, creative businesses, and artists of all stripes who make up what is now known as the Telluride Arts District.
• Led the development of the Wayfinding Project.
I T E L LU R I D E A R T S D I S T R I C T, A PL AC E O F FE A R L E SS C R E AT I V I T Y: I In March 2011, Governor Hickenlooper signed House Bill HB11-1031 encouraging the formation of Creative Districts, followed by a Colorado Creative Industries certification program. The idea was to encourage the formation of Creative Districts in communities, neighborhoods, or contiguous geographic areas for the purposes of attracting creative entrepreneurs and artists to a community to infuse new energy and innovation. Which would in turn enhance the economic and civic capital of the community; attract more visitors; revitalize and beautify; strengthen a community’s unique identity; and showcase cultural and artistic organizations, events and amenities. Telluride roundly met much of the criteria used to measure the health of a creative district. The main area identified for improvement was the lack of affordable live/work space for local artists.
I T H E R E B O OT: T E L LU R I D E A R T, I N I T I AT I V E S L A R G E & S M A L L , B U T A LWAYS I M PAC T FU L : I Straight out of the gate, aided by her first programs director Sasha Sullivan and now Britt Markey and Audrey Mann, Kate Jones made a tactical decision to proceed by taking baby steps, introducing relatively small, but very public, substantive initiatives to show she meant business, among them:
Today, under the unwavering guidance of Telluride Arts, the Telluride Arts District serves the region by sustaining, promoting, and expanding the arts. Anchored by town boundaries, on the west by the Palm Theatre, the south by the Ah Haa School for the Arts, the north by the Telluride Historical Museum and the east by the Town Park Stage, the district contains world-class exhibits, music, film, theatre, literature, architecture, design, food, and artists of all disciplines.

should enhance the arts within the District. The three-year work plan, adopted in 2014 to implement the Master Plan, includes the following priorities: providing resources for local artists; marketing Telluride as an arts destination; and securing space for the arts. “I came here in the summer of 2010 and the challenge was enormous. We had to rebuild a weak organization, then reposition it within the community,” added Kate. “We believe in an ecology, a culture of the arts, and our unique concern is to promote that concept.” I T E L LU R I D E A R T S: I N TO T H E FU T U R E , 2 012 +: I Under Kate Jones, ably supported by Britt, the blinkered attitude about Telluride Arts appears to be old news. The duo has made significant inroads against its priorities. Among the key initiatives since the updated Master Plan was completed: • Repositioned Telluride Arts to provide leadership and implement Master Plan priorities. • Telluride Arts moved from being a line item in the CCAASE budget to a line item in the Town budget, which provides more resources to expand its mission. • Recognized by the State as a Certified Arts District.
“Our overarching priority is to act as an advocate for the whole arts sector, promoting and expanding a culture of the arts,” explained Kate. “We believe the whole is greater than the sum of its parts and that by elevating the profile of the arts – nonprofit sector, creative businesses, galleries, venues, all the local arts events and artists – Telluride will become known as more than a destination for world-class skiing and festivals. Telluride will develop a reputation as a place that incubates and supports art of all kinds too, from paintings to food and architecture. The added recognition will ultimately bring more energy, excitement, and money into the arts community, enabling artist to live and work in the region. Once that happens, Telluride will enjoy an even more inspired and inspiring cultural economy than exists today.” Adopted two years after Kate arrived on the scene in 2012 following a rigorous community process, the Telluride Cultural Master Plan provided the roadmap for programs that
“We were among the first seven communities to receive recognition for being a robust and strategic arts community,” explained Kate. “That means we utilize best practices to strengthen and elevate Telluride’s arts community over time.” • Art space convening. In Fall 2014, representatives from ArtSpace Minneapolis, Boettcher Foundation, El Pomar Foundation, the state Office of Economic Development, Colorado Creative Industries, the Telluride Foundation, the Town of Telluride and the County joined the Arts District and convened in Telluride to explore space needs and opportunities. “We have begun to define long-term art space needs in our planning and have constant, ongoing dialogues with the town, funders, developers, etc. about opportunities,” said Kate, “There are two big projects in the works, but it's too early to talk publicly about either one of them.” • Telluride Wayfinding Project. I M O R E A B O U T K AT E J O N E S, B R I T T M A R K E Y, A N D AU D R E Y M A N N : I Kate Jones provides strategic, focused leadership towards forwarding the arts on the local level. Her passion for the work stems from a belief that the arts explore, expose, and advance humanity. She holds degrees in studio art and psychology and is a trained mediator.
With a background in graphic design and fine art, Britt brings expertise to the core staff of Telluride Arts that stretches the capacity of the organization. She graduated from UC Boulder in 2008 with a double major in Studio Arts and Spanish language and literature. Her resume includes assistant to the director for the Center of Arts, Media, and Performance in Boulder, Colorado and graphic designer, University of Colorado Foundation. Britt brings substantial design, organizational and communication skills to Telluride Arts and was a key player in the development of the Telluride Arts District. Audrey, a graduate of UNC Wilmington in creative writing and French, is creative manager, Telluride Arts District. The job involves curating exhibits for Gallery 81435, and the Stronghouse Studios + Gallery, as well as three different shows at Wilkinson Public Library. Audrey also helps organize Telluride's First Thursday Art Walk and maintains the working artist studios at the Stronghouse. In addition to working for the Telluride Arts District, she owns a design business, A.Mann’s World, working as a freelance graphic designer and photographer. Since moving to town in 2008, Audrey’s mixed media fine art has been the subject of three solo shows.
In 2010, Kate became the Executive Director of Telluride Arts, returning to her Colorado roots. Prior to moving to Colorado, Kate was the director of a local arts agency in rural Washington State, which she leveraged for bold community and economic development. During her tenure, Kate established a model arts education program across seven schools in rural Okanogan County, developed a high caliber performing arts series, and implemented a comprehensive arts marketing program. She also spearheaded community visioning and fundraising that resulted in the purchase of a six-acre surplus forest service complex called Twispworks, which was developed as an economic engine fueled by the arts, sustainable technologies, and local agriculture. Kate was a founding board member of the Twisp Public Development Authority, served on the Washington State Arts Commission, the Economic Development District, the Washington State Arts Alliance, and was a regional representative for Arts Ed Washington and Artist Trust. Since moving to Telluride, Kate has reactivated Telluride Arts’ leadership capacity. She was instrumental in establishing the Telluride Arts District and winning recognition as a Colorado Certified Creative District. She led an update of the Telluride Cultural Master Plan that was adopted by the Town of Telluride, and secured funding for implementation. In addition, she has strengthened the programs of Telluride Arts to advance the mission, which include the Telluride Art Walk, Twenty(by)Telluride, Gallery 81435, the Stronghouse Studios and Gallery, the Telluride Art + Architecture Weekend, Arts Marketing, Wayfinding, and Art Space develop-

BOOM! Science Camp
Into the Future – Unplugged written by Susan Viebrock of tellurideinside.com
“The technology makes the tiniest windows of time entertaining and potentially productive, but scientists point to an unanticipated side effect. When people keep their brains busy with digital input, they are forfeiting downtime that could allow them to better learn and remember information, or come up with new ideas,” wrote Matt Richtel in a New York Times series on the impact of technology.
children to turn off the TV or hang up the telephone. In those halcyon days you could not take it with you. Outside the house, it was time to smell the roses. Time for a kid to be a kid. You would simply walk to a friend’s place or to a park to play, invent games – not download them – and spontaneously create outdoor adventures. Technology was still largely the stuff of science fiction.
Behavioral studies have shown that focus and performance suffer when people multi task. And the highly prized skill of maintaining eye contact with one person while texting another enables people of all ages to be alone, together; to be present and not present simultaneously.
That is the learning environment the Telluride Academy is attempting to recreate over the summer of 2015, asking parents to support that effort by leaving their kids’ electronic devices at home. The Academy’s program director Luke Brown is the architect of this new initiative dubbed “Academy Unplugged.”
What happens when young people are not wired for distraction? The Telluride Academy plans to find out this summer. “We have always discouraged the use of electronic devices,” explained Telluride Academy’s executive director Elaine Demas. “Although our official policy on the matter has been a bit lax, historically it has not been a major challenge. Once we get kids outside rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, and camping under the stars, they seem to forget about their toys and gadgets. But times have changed, and with the recent explosion in the use of Androids, iPhones and iPads, we have witnessed an unfortunate rise of social withdrawal among our students. Believe me, I love the fact that Academy students want to Instagram, Facebook, and text their Academy experiences to family and friends, but when that activity begins to erode their own experience or the experience of others, then it’s time to pull the plug. We feel that time has come.” I T E L LU R I D E AC A D E M Y, “ U N PLU G G E D”: I In 1981, when Wendy Brooks (founder of the Telluride Academy and a single mom with three boys of her own) started a summer camp, young people faced other forms of distractions and time-wasters. Parents were constantly telling their
“For the past 35 years, the Telluride Academy has been in the business of creating memorable experiences for young people. Our wide range of programs offer students unique opportunities to step outside their comfort level, meet new people and grow as individuals into landscapes that perhaps at the outset were unknown. At its core, Academy programs are designed to promote healthy and active lifestyles, as well as a deep appreciation and sense of stewardship for the natural places we explore. Success in these endeavors requires a balance of commitment, courage, and focus. Every day, we ask our students to embrace their fears when scaling rock walls, paddling river rapids, and sleeping under the stars. We are now asking them to draw from that well of confidence and commitment and join us for a powerful and memorable Academy experience.” Luke continued: “‘Academy Unplugged’ is not an anti-technology campaign, rather, it is a renewed recognition of the types of connections we feel are important: connection to one’s self; to those around us; and to the natural world. We feel strongly that the preservation of the wild places we love, as well as the wild spirit within us all, continues to depend
PEOPLE AND PLACES
WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN IF YOUNG PEOPLE WERE NOT WIRED FOR DISTRACTION? on our ability to put children and young adults in environments that allow them to learn, focus, and reflect without the everpresent enticements and distractions digital communication provides.” Radical? Not really. Effective? Time will tell. But the odds – and the science – are in the Academy’s favor. I T E L LU R I D E AC A D E M Y: A LO O K I N TO T H E R E A R -V I E W M I R R O R I In 1991, leveraging its backyard beginnings, Wendy Brooks steered her growing summer camp into the future by forming a nonprofit and assembling a dynamic board of founding directors, including longtime locals Eric Fallenius, Steven Gluckstern, Jane Taylor, and John Steel. As the organization continued to grow and diversify its programming, it became clear the Academy was playing a major role in Telluride’s desire to define itself as a family-friendly, yearround resort town. The Academy’s original format of providing amazing adventures for children Monday through Thursday with a camp-out on Wednesday night is still in place today. The design was perfect for visiting parents who wanted time on their own, but evenings and weekends with their offspring. The schedule worked perfectly for locals too, who were in need of quality care for their children during the summer months when school was not in session. Many of the second homeowners arriving in Telluride throughout the early years were also looking for ways to meet people and become engaged in their adopted community. The Academy proved to be the socially integrative force that united these newcomers with one another as well as with locals through the shared love of their children and their experiences. I T H E AC A D E M Y TO DAY: I These days, enrollment at the award-winning Telluride Academy has reached 850+. In 2014, the number was 887 kids – but most programs are capped at 12 students (with a minimum of two instructors) to maintain a feeling of interconnectedness and intimacy among students and staff. Its curriculum, balanced skillfully among a wide array of activities, totals 100+ unique after-school and summer enrichment programs, targeting young people, ages 5 – 18.
A test case features a group of five neuroscientists who decided to unplug on a trip the group took in the wilderness: no cellphones; no email; laptops left at home. The goal, summed up in another article by Matt Richtel of The New York Times: “To understand how heavy use of digital devices and other technology changes how we think and behave, and how a retreat into nature might reverse those effects.” What happened when the men stepped away from their devices and rested their brains over a week in late May, traveling in a remote area of Utah rafting the San Juan River, camping and hiking? What was the impact on attention, memory and learning? Is learning really enhanced by a walk in the woods? At the onset of the journey into silence, the trip leader observed: “Our senses changed. They kind of re-calibrated — you noticed sounds, like these crickets chirping; you heard the river, the sounds, the smells, you became more connected to the physical environment, the earth, rather than the artificial environment.” Brain circuits eased after just a few days unplugged, did ideas flow easily with the river? The scientists concluded the affects of technology on focus and mental fatigue are in their infancy, but… “Even without knowing exactly how the trip affected their brains, the scientists are prepared to recommend a little downtime as a path to uncluttered thinking.” As one of the men put it: “How many years did we prescribe aspirin without knowing the exact mechanism?”
The Academy's “New Horizon” after-school programs run during the academic year and offer adventures in rock climbing, mountain biking, global awareness, and music. Full-day summer programs begin as soon as local schools close for summer break. (The first day of summer programming in 2015 is June 8.) The schedule ends in late August. Programs include a dazzling array of enrichment opportunities: hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, science and environmental education, artistic adventures and regional and international exploration. There is truly something for everyone. And let’s not forget the parents.

The Academy’s famous Tuesday parent hikes (yes, every Tuesday for 10-weeks) provide a great opportunity for parents to meet one another and hike to areas they would be unlikely to experience on their own. “These hikes have become very popular,” explains Elaine, who leads the outings every week along with Larry Rosen, the Academy’s finance director. “The parent hikes are the highlight of my week and provide a unique opportunity for me to meet new parents and really get to know our community’s newest residents and visitors. I have witnessed very special friendships develop between groups of parents over the years because of our hikes, and connections are what it’s all about. So many Academy parents have come to look forward to these hikes every single week.” Academy parent parties are also very popular – always on Wednesday evenings when the kids are camping – and in 2014, the institution also began offering weekly parent mountain bike rides. At the Academy, something for everyone, young and old, takes on a deeper, richer meaning. I M I SS I O N , PR O G R A M M I N G , S TA FF: I The mission of the Telluride Academy, more easily actualized unplugged, is to “inspire children and teens through experiential education that promotes physical activity, creative learning, environmental stewardship, responsibility to others and positive life choices." To that end, over the past five years, under the inspiring leadership of Elaine Demas, the Academy has continued its “Commitment to Excellence”. “We study the curriculum for each and every program and look closely at the level of education and enrichment offered,” explained Luke. “One of the most meaningful enhancements we have incorporated into our programs over the past few years has come through the collaborations we have been able to forge with an incredible collection of people from within the Telluride community and across the

country, each of whom has made his or her vision and skills available to a large percent of our student population. The list includes a nationally recognized survival specialist; a visiting expert from the Audubon society; a professional BMX rider; and a local watershed expert. The result of those efforts has been to improve upon the already solid Academy experience we have been creating for over 30 years.” In the upcoming summer months, families will find multiple offerings for young people of all ages. “These programs are designed to allow students to choose from a wide range of the types of activities they are interested in from mountain biking on endless trails to scaling local climbing crags, paddling through white-water, backpacking into the backcountry or performing on an outdoor stage,” continued Luke. “We have worked hard to make sure any and all of those experiences can happen. And as students grow up inside the Academy family, we have created opportunities for them to experience an even more indepth involvement with any given activity, including more time spent in the field. The Academy believes that a solid blend of experiences paired with instruction in a variety of programs will effectively allow students to pursue and enjoy all the benefits of an active lifestyle filled with adventure and discovery.” This summer, classic programs such as Outdoor Leadership Challenge, Flower Fairies and Havasupai are back on the schedule. New outdoor adventures offered in 2015 include SUP Trekkers, Cabin Fever and Colorado Trailblazers. The Academy’s fine and performing arts programs are also top notch, including the infamous Mudd Butts Mystery Theater Troupe, a month-long theater intensive, back for its 29th year under the direction of performing arts masters, Sally Davis, Kim Epifano and the amazing artist and prop-master, Mike Stasiuk. For younger thespians, there is Moving Mountain Theater, Frisky Foxes, and Center Stage. Again something for everyone. Through a partnership with Telluride Playwrights Festival, the Academy is also offering an in-depth theater and

Clearly Academy kids are in good hands. “The hiring process for these positions is extremely competitive, allowing us to bring on-board an impressive number of experienced, established, and professional staff members every year. Instructors are selected for their proven decision-making abilities, extensive previous experiences working with youth, and ultimately for their passion for creating impactful and important experiences for young people,” concluded Luke. Through the support of private donors as well as the National Inclusion Project, r-word.org, and the Telluride Adaptive Sports Program, the Academy is able to provide an inclusive environment for all children, including those with disabilities. “Through our collaboration with these wonderful organizations, we now possess the resources to better serve every child in an inclusive environment,” explains Elaine. “An inclusive environment means that children with disabilities explore, play, and learn alongside children without disabilities. They are not separated.” From the get-go, Telluride Academy has offered tuition assistance to all qualifying local families to ensure a diverse population of young people in its mix. In 2014, 276 young people received a total of $158,882 in financial aid. Providing this type of financial assistance would not be possible without the generous support of countless Academy families, businesses, and granting organizations which make annual financial contributions to support the organization. Creating the magic that makes the Academy work truly does take a village.

SHUSHANA Food for Thought written by Susan Viebrock of tellurideinside.com
Pssst…Got a minute to talk about your health? Why have chronic diseases become the new normal? How we can reverse and prevent them?
have found that when IGF-1 is dripped onto human breast cancer cells, the mutated cells grow uncontrollably.
What experts say is good for you and what’s not seems to change like mountain weather, however one thing is clear: there are mega challenges with regard to how foods are produced in America’s factory farms and the escalating diseases, from diabetes to obesity, as a result of what we consume.
• In the 1970s, Finland’s mortality rate from heart disease was the highest in the world. In an effort to reduce the numbers, Finland’s government implemented a nationwide program, promoting cutting back on meat, eggs, and dairy products. The result? There was an 80% drop in heart disease deaths and cardiovascular and cancer mortality was cut in half.
“By the time a person is 50, they’ve eaten something like 55,000 meals and taken in the neighborhood of two million bites,” reported Mindful magazine.
• Ractopamine is a growth-promoting drug banned in 160 countries including China, however accepted in the U.S. and found in pig tissue, including bacon.
But two million bites of what?
• The Harvard and Cornell food pyramids show the right amount of meat and dairy for optimal health is zero.
A few eye-popping facts from two books co-authored by Telluride part-timer Shushana Castle underline the challenge:
Food for thought and a few reasons why Shushana wants you to “Rethink Food.”
• According to the Center for Disease Control, (CDC) thousands of people are killed each year from eating feces from meat products and contaminants found in eggs and milk and over 150,000 people are hospitalized. • Our industrial horror machine, factory farms which produce over 27 billion animals in the U.S. for food each year also produce over 110 times the amount of human crap. Animal manure goes mostly unregulated, often spilling untreated garbage into our rivers, lakes, streams, oceans and polluting our freshwater system. It then makes its way onto crops, contaminating the foods we grow that end up on our plates. • The growth hormone IGF-1 that is naturally in meat, has been found to stimulate the growth of cancer cells. Studies
“Rethink Food,” the title of the first of Shushana’s two recent books on the subjects of America’s food production, health, and nutrition, is chockfull of sobering, hard facts about how to prevent and reverse chronic diseases. Over 100 world-renowned doctors, 16 nutritionists, and elite athletes weighed into the narrative. Shushana’s second book, “The Meaty Truth,” also co-authored with Amy-Lee Goodman, details the environmental disaster and health challenges caused by America’s meat and dairy production. According to numerous experts: “Water, meat, milk and other dairy products are filled with toxins, antibiotics, untested growth hormones, ammonia,
PEOPLE AND PLACES
animal pus, and manure. The current conditions of the food production industry must drastically improve, and until they do, it is absolutely vital to monitor what you eat. Castle and Goodman take a hard-hitting look at what America is putting into its food, the negative effects it has on the planet, and the best ways to make healthy, informed decisions.
charmed life, the scope of which is hard to capture in any kitchen-sink category. Truth is Shushana is a contender in a dizzying array of pursuits that, yes, include writing books on subjects of life-changing importance like our environment and food, also Wall Street, financial markets in detail, and water rights.
And….
Shushana Castle grew up in Houston, TX and spent summers in Europe and the Middle East. Educated in America and Europe, she holds a bachelors of business administration and a master’s degree in environmental management and water. But the die for her future career and philanthropy was cast when Shushana was still in her teens:
“As the antibiotic age ends, the rise of pandemic diseases is approaching. Approximately half of the illnesses that claim American lives today are related to what we eat, and our healthcare system is focused on treating the sick, not preventing illnesses from occurring. To fix our health problems, to continue feeding the world’s ever-growing population, and to save our planet from ecological destruction, we can no longer avoid making changes to how American meat and dairy are produced. This guide is easy to read, applicable to anyone’s lifestyle, and impossible to put down.” With these two books and regular appearances on dozens of TV and radio shows interviewing leading doctors and scientists, Shushana Castle is fast becoming a recognized authority on the subject of how our food choices are intimately connected to our health and the environmental crisis. She also sits on the advisory board of the Plantrician Project, an annual medical conference geared toward medical doctors from a variety of specialty areas and allied healthcare professionals, designed to showcase progressive scientific research evidencing the preventive and disease fighting capabilities of whole food, plant-based nutrition. But there is way more than food on Shushana’s plate. This widely accomplished, smart, strong, sensual, irreverent, classy yet down-to-earthy lady seems to have led a
Relaxing Telluride style, with Mount Wilson in the background.
“By the time I was 17, I understood what every part of the Wall Street Journal was relaying and defining for its readers because the newspaper was required reading by my father, who made his living in the stock market. I became fascinated with all his charts and back then, hand-written spread sheets. Dad insisted I understand his personal investments and the hows and whys and intricacies of investing, so I was very well-informed and in love with the equities sector right out of college. After school, I was immediately hired by Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith.” Before entering the world of healthcare and nonprofits, for about 25 years Shushana worked as a globally renowned fixed-income and equities securities specialist, hobnobbing and transacting with key players of some of the largest institutions and governments in the world. A natural trailblazer, during that fecund period Shushana frequently traveled to Europe to meet with central banks, Tier 1 financial firms, and heads of state in Italy, France, and Belgium, where she structured portfolio needs. Family connections with leaders in the Middle East opened doors in that part of the world too, but business acumen (and language skills) secured a seat at the table. Shushana became one of the very first

females ever trusted to deal with sovereign wealth funds of Gulf countries such as Kuwait, Bahrain, and United Arab Emirates, a market historically closed to the fairer sex. From the board rooms of Europe and the deserts of the Middle East, Shushana transitioned her skills in the finance world to working with the United Nations and other global entities in developing countries, where she focused on women and water. Shushana’s philanthropic impulses, initially mandated by her parents, evolved from volunteer work as a teen: “I have volunteered in some capacity since my teens. My first real volunteer job was at age 15, when I visited a nursing home once a week for six months. There I dreamed about my future and spent hours speaking with the elderly, who also had dreams but were now in ‘storage’ and needing my attention. That was very tough on me. However, I gained insights that I recall to this day. Later in life, I got involved in women's issues, taking board positions with large water-related nonprofits. I became so passionate about putting in low-technology water wells in developing
countries and learning more about water-related issues on our planet, I returned to school in my mid-40s and got a masters degree in environmental management and water. The alarming conditions of our oceans, rivers, streams, and fresh water deserve proactive attention on a massive scale to sustain and protect our waters now and for future generations.” Attracted by such thinking and a door-stop resume in the business world, President Bill Clinton personally invited Shushana to serve as a member of his Global Initiative, where she was included in quarterly think-tank discussions with the likes of Bill Gates, Larry Page of Google, economist Robert Reich, Queen Rania of Jordan, Al Gore, Sir Richard Branson, among other luminaries who share with her a passion for the planet and the ability to make a difference. For several years, Shushana moderated the water sector at the international CleanTech Conference, which brings together leading world scientists in the water and CleanTech spheres. She also currently sits on the board of Living

Shushana’s husband Jack Castle, a visionary entrepreneur and leader in the healthcare industry, discovered Telluride in 1998, when a friend invited him for a visit. “Jack fell in love with Telluride’s natural beauty. One month later, he returned to the region for two weeks and bought property. Years later, we had the pleasure of meeting Telluride Properties’ Steve Cieciuch, one of the preeminent realtors in the Telluride region. Steve has an excellent eye for property and a kind heart. He has helped us in all our real estate transactions since. We love his company and consider Steve a good friend.” Having been sold on the region’s gobsmacking natural beauty, the Castles soon discovered Telluride’s cultural bounty as well, especially Moutainfilm in Telluride, becoming major supporters of the 36-year-old event. Shushana and Jack Castle are so passionate about Mountainfilm and the activism the festival encourages through advocacy, the couple brings Mountainfilm to their hometown in Texas. The twoevening, much-talked-about event recently enjoyed its fifth soldout year. “Mountainfilm fully encompasses a lot of what Jack and I are very passionate about, what we believe in and try to stand for every day of our lives. TOWN OF TELLURIDE AREAS
Nestled in a box canyon surrounded by the majestic, 13,000+ft peaks of the San Juan Mountains, the over a century-old Town of Telluride is filled with colorful legends and Rocky Mountain spirit. Just six blocks wide and twelve blocks long, the National Historic District is a window into the town’s illustrious past with its colorful Victorian homes, clapboard storefronts, boutiques, art galleries, bookstores, and gourmet restaurants. The backdrop of this historic town is Telluride’s world class ski resort, featuring a gondola that provides free transportation between Telluride and Mountain Village for skiers & pedestrians alike. A year-round paradise, summers in Telluride are highlighted by such renowned festivals as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Telluride Film Festival, and Telluride Blues & Brews Festival, just to name a few.
Gondola Corridor The gondola corridor is located in the heart of Telluride’s historic district and offers a nice mixture of Victorian-style homes, modern condos, and a few select hotel properties. This neighborhood affords easy ski access and proximity to downtown Telluride restaurants, shopping and nightlife, as well as the complimentary Telluride gondola. West End - Lift 7 Area The greatest concentration of Telluride condos are located here next to Lift 7 and along the San Miguel River, presenting reasonable price points coupled with convenient ski access. Zoned for short term rentals, this area allows owners to recoup some investment costs when they aren't using their property. East End On the sunny side of town, this family-friendly neighborhood is closest to Town Park, where all the signature Telluride music festivals are held. Many of the residences enjoy iconic views of Bear Creek and the Box Canyon in a refined residential setting. Just Outside of Town Idarado Legacy is an exclusive, private community just a few minutes east of downtown Telluride and offers some of the most dramatic views in the area. Heading west out of Telluride; Eider Creek, Hillside, & Lawson Hill offer more affordable real estate opportunities, including deed-restricted options.

DOWN VALLEY & OUTSIDE AREAS
Aptly nicknamed the "Banana Belt", the Down Valley area follows the river canyon west down Highway 145. Sited amongst magnificent red rock cliff bands and along the winding banks of the San Miguel River, the Down Valley areas of Sawpit, Placerville, & Fall Creek enjoy fairer weather from an almost 1,200ft drop in elevation. Resplendent with unique charm and character, the outlying communities that make up the Telluride region have a personality all their own. These amiable towns offer an alternative to the hustle and bustle of Telluride. While these communities present more budget friendly real estate options than Telluride – they still feature beautiful mountain views, convenient river access, newly constructed homes and sprawling ranches.

WILL DOWNING, Broker Will drove into Telluride during the summer of 2003 on his way home to Alabama, where he had 2 semesters left to complete a Bachelor's Degree in Real Estate Finance at the University of Alabama. Two years later, after graduating and becoming a top producer in a Birmingham real estate firm, Will couldn’t quiet the call of Telluride. Raised as a fly fisherman and having a passion for sharing Telluride with new people, he became a fly fishing guide at Telluride Outside. It wasn’t long before his love of "The Deal" drew him back to real estate and Telluride Properties. Will’s mission is to serve as the most astute, detailed and professional guide for you in achieving your real estate goals in the Telluride region. Will can still be found guiding friends and clients along the rivers all over the Telluride area, stretching his ski season from November into late June, or climbing in a local crag with his wife Lacey (whom he met on Main Street in 2008) and dog Blue. 970.708.1244 I telluridewill@gmail.com
