Telluride’s

EMERGING CULTURAL CORE One Block, Two New Buildings, Three Nonprofits by Susan Viebrock of Telluride Inside and Out

PEOPLE AND PLACES

BACK TO THE FUTURE In the early 1900's, tracks for a narrow gauge railroad ran along the San Miguel River to the Depot, then continued down to Fir, where it stopped to unload goods and supplies into the Warehouse at the south end of the street. Back then, Telluride Transfer, which owned the land adjacent to the tracks, was the region’s largest transport company. Its most daunting job was delivering necessities to the mines high above town. The Telluride Transfer Warehouse, an imposing, two-story, sandstone structure, was built in 1906. When the mining boom went bust and Telluride became a ghost of its former, lustrous self, the only two buildings left standing were the Stronghouse and the Transfer Warehouse, the latter serving as the livery barn, warehouse, and office for the Transfer Company until the 1950's.

In 2015 the Warehouse interior was cleared and opened for Telluride Arts Events.

The visionary founder of the Telluride Ski Area, Joe Zoline, purchased the property from the Schuler Family in 1968; the Transfer Warehouse then remained in use for commercial storage and as a filling station until 1978. One year later, a heavy snow load caused the roof to collapse. Since that time, Zoline’s daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and John Lifton-Zoline, and Pamela’s brother Thomas, have been stewards of the historic property, bracing and protecting the walls for 34 years. On May 31, 2016, the Town of Telluride gave a green light to the new owners of the Warehouse District property, which included the sale of the Telluride Transfer Warehouse to the local nonprofit, Telluride Arts. The plan is for the reincarnated structure to once again serve as, well, a warehouse – but this time, a warehouse of ideas and art (writ large) under the guidance and supervision of Telluride Arts, which will host programming designed to advance the intellectual and cultural life of the Telluride region. At the same time, (May 2016), Telluride’s Ah Haa School for the Arts got the okay to develop the San Miguel Power Association property (diagonally across the street from the Transfer Warehouse) and create its very first purpose-built structure since the art school was founded in 1991. The verdict appears to have been decisive: the vote was to shore up Telluride’s future and “Go Deep.”

Yes, deep into the powder for sure – pray to Ullr – because Telluride is, no denying, first and foremost defined as a ski resort. But as the Town vote suggests, what snows folks around these parts – and why they put down roots here – is not just for the snow. It is also because of the Telluride region’s richly diverse cultural life. In fact it is fair to say this passion for, and focus on creativity that permeates the region already defines Telluride as more than just another ski resort, however unique, with its dazzlingly lit snowy peaks, outrageous starlit skies, wall-towall summer blockbuster festivals, and mega moxie. The dual branding will be reinforced and amplified as the plans for Fir & Pacific unfold. But until that time, which is soonish (perhaps by 2020), the region has been a cultural center without a center, i.e., a physical address. The development of the corner of Fir and Pacific, which again, includes a renovated Transfer Warehouse and a new home for Ah Haa, should prove to be a game-changer. The third leg of what will be Telluride’s cultural triad on that corner, the future heART of the region’s all-caps art scene, is the five-star Wilkinson Public Library.

PEOPLE AND PLACES

With those socio-cultural powerhouses pulling together, pooling resources, the quality of life and the economic wellbeing of the greater Telluride community, (along with the brand), will surely be enhanced. With the triad’s collective (unofficial) mantra and mandate to “Go Deep,” the super awesome possibilities that open up are cause for geewhizzing.

decision to proceed by taking baby steps, introducing relatively small, but very public and substantive initiatives to show they meant business, among them: • Expanded and enhanced First Thursday Art Walk. (Number of participating venues tripled from 7 to about 21.) • Created the Art & Architecture Tour

Once Telluride Arts and the Ah Haa got the green light from Town Council, the handbrake came off and it is now full speed ahead. But where to exactly? Read on as Telluride Arts, Ah Haa, and the Telluride Library weigh in about the fiesta of possibilities right around the corner – on that historic corner.

• Created Twenty(by)Telluride, designed to showcase the depth and breadth of the talent involved in local nonprofits. Each presenter has exactly 20 slides and each slide is shown for exactly 20 seconds, challenging them to be precise. • Rebranded TCAH, changing the nonprofit’s name to Telluride Arts. • Established Gallery 81435 to showcase more contemporary, edgier art.

TELLURIDE ARTS & THE TRANSFER WAREHOUSE Over the past six years, Kate Jones, executive director of Telluride Arts and the Telluride Arts District, has led a slow, steady march (often uphill) to the front door of the Transfer Warehouse – dropping strategic breadcrumbs along the route. Planning for these initiatives began in 2010, when Kate accepted her job. Collectively they have transformed the organization once known as the Telluride Council for the Arts & Humanities into Telluride Arts, now an innovative arts and cultural advocacy engine and regional rain maker – (snow maker?). The Telluride Council for the Arts & Humanities, Telluride’s very first nonprofit, was established in 1971. Small but determined, TCAH incubated two powerhouse festivals, Film and Bluegrass, and a third, the beloved Chamber Music. The nonprofit also acted as an arts information, advocacy, and education agency and at one point in the evolution of other Telluride arts staples such as the Sheridan Opera House, Telluride Theater, the Fischer Poetry Prize, and Deep Creek Experimental, Telluride Arts (as TCAH) provided a bridge to keep those essential strands of Telluride’s cultural DNA healthy.

• Led the process to update the Telluride Cultural Master Plan. • Led the Telluride Wayfinding Plan on behalf of the Town. • Established the Telluride Arts District. With the clear goal of Telluride Arts acting as the bellwether for Telluride’s cultural economy, bigger changes would come soon enough, largely on the heels of an updated (2012)Telluride Cultural Master Plan and the certification of the Telluride Arts District by the State of Colorado in 2013. “Telluride was among the first seven communities to receive recognition for being a robust and strategic arts community,” explained Jones. “That means we utilize best practices to strengthen and elevate Telluride’s arts community over time.” “Strengthening” and “elevating” rhyme with creating marketing and branding for the Telluride Arts District and the development of a major art space – the Transfer Warehouse – as a permanent home for arts and ideas in the heart of Telluride’s extended community.

Over the years the mission of what was TCAH has remained largely unchanged, though as Telluride Arts, its ethos became more defined and its work far more strategic.

There is a chorus of voices singing in harmony about the importance of the phoenix-like renovation of the Warehouse. One of them is long-time local (at one time, he was school superintendent in Telluride), entrepreneur, and philanthropist Steve Gluckstern, a major player on the team advising Jones on the project:

Straight out of the gate, Jones and her team made a tactical

hand in hand. The new owner of the Warehouse property was totally within his rights to turn that space into condos, but that would have made no sense for a town that wants to maintain its unique character. And what makes this place unique, what makes it different from other ski resorts, is not that we have a great ski mountain – although we do. It is not that we have the best lifts in the country. Art in all its affects is what makes Telluride Telluride, the festivals, yes of course, but also the fine art scene, the Ah Haa School, the Sheridan Opera House, the Palm, plus Telluride Theatre, Palm Dance, and all kinds of musical events. We need to do all that we can to protect, preserve, even enhance those riches. And Kate Jones is the right person for the job. She is compelling, proactive, thorough and a good listener, in other words, the cornerstone of this cornerstone project. I see my job and the job of our committee as helping Kate and anyone else involved think through their goals. Private-public initiatives are complex. But once completed, the Transfer Warehouse will be undoubtedly become a resource that is fundamental to the character of Telluride’s extended community, one that provides many new options for artists and arts and cultural organizations. The need for this sort of development is not far down the chain from affordable housing.”

Ah Haa's Summer Youth Camp.

The Telluride Arts District encompasses the boundaries of the Town of Telluride, from the Palm Theatre to the Main Stage in Town Park, from the Telluride Historical Museum to the Ah Haa’s current home, the Depot building. Once it is fully restored, the Transfer Warehouse becomes the locus of the District, a mixed-used public center for arts and ideas. The approximately 12,000 square feet of contemporary, light-filled space will be available to locals and guests to enjoy museum-quality “teaching” exhibitions and installations, lectures, music, film screenings, book clubs, and large and small gatherings of all stripes. Whatever advances the intellectual and cultural life of the region. Specific plans for the Transfer Warehouse, a National Historic Landmark, include the Warehouse Bar & Cafe, serving a cafe menu, cocktails, coffee and tea; a small, museum-style shop that doubles as the reception area; a screening room for digital media, small lectures, solo and small group performance art, poetry readings, and a quiet place to read; exhibition space; gallery/studios as a working space for an artist-in-residence, which can be easily converted for exhibitions and small parties; a kitchen; storage space and more after the architectural design is completed (2017); the building is stabilized to preserve its history (2017-2018); and construction is completed (2019). Occupancy is currently scheduled for 2020. In other words, under the watchful eye of Jones and Telluride Arts, the resurrected Transfer Warehouse is a place designed to feed users at every level of their being, body and soul. Coffee, culture, and history should prove to be a powerful brew. “I am a passionate skier, so I was drawn to Telluride, like so many others, for the mountain,” said Jones. “But once here, I discovered a very strong, cohesive community with a deeply embedded and very rich cultural life. Before developing plans for the Transfer Warehouse, we hired ArtSpace to conduct a sustainable facilities analysis to help us identify the best and highest possible use for the space. Once completed, we became confident the Warehouse would allow us to go deeper into the fertile wilderness of hearts and minds. Telluride is, yes, about deep power, but clearly also about deep think. I am especially excited about the exciting collaborations close proximity to Ah Haa and the Library will undoubtedly yield.”

AH HAA AFTER 25 YEARS, THE

SCHOOL’S FIRST PURPOSE-BUILT STRUCTURE, A WIN-WIN FOR AH HAA AND THE TELLURIDE COMMUNITY A young man of 18 dropped into this Valley from over the hill while backpacking. He thought he had arrived in Shangri-la. Inspired down to his toenails, years later he used an inheritance to open a school so others in his adopted community could find the art in their hearts like he did. In our Twitterverse, that is the down low on the origins of the Ah Haa School for the Arts. The much less abridged version begins in 1968, when Ah Haa’s visionary founder Daniel Tucker returned to our Shangri-la to work as wilderness guide for the owner of the Skyline Guest Ranch. When he then went off in search of the rest of his life, he came to realize he need only look in the rear view mirror: the magic he had experienced in Telluride had laid a solid foundation for his future. In the 1970's, Tucker went on to found a company, Turtle Island Press, which published limited edition, museum-

quality, fine art books. About three years into the business, he asked himself a life-altering question: “When I am 100 and looking back over my life, what am I going to regret not having done?” The answer came in a rush: “The only thing I would have regretted is not having taken the risk – and it is a risk – of becoming an artist.”

is a close translation of the Greek “Eureka!,” the utterance attributed to Archimedes on discovering the purity of gold.) After a decade in operation, Tucker shared his feelings about Ah Haa in particular: “Our garden is in full flower. It brings beauty into the lives of those who seek beauty.” Words that still ring true.

And after a long and very successful career in book publishing – his original works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Gutenberg Museum in Maine; the New York Public Library; and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. – Tucker is painting in earnest again. Last year, as part of its 25th anniversary celebration, Ah Haa exhibited Tucker’s latest body of paintings, beautiful, brightly colored soulscapes that reflect his inner Cheshire Cat (plus Fauve/Magic Realism antecedents).

In June 1991 Ah Haa opened its doors with a seasonal staff and eight visiting artists from all over the country. Current director Judy Kohin joined in the fall of 1991 with one part-time staff member. Twenty-four years later, in 2014, the school had become the region’s foremost arts education center for adults and young people and its staff had grown to five full-time and two part-time employees. Over 40 part-time artists and teachers operated in the two historic buildings in downtown Telluride. By 2015, over 2,000 students attended Ah Haa classes, which rolled up to over

Ah Haa's Telluride Painting School, started in 2012.

In the introduction to the catalog for the exhibition of those paintings, collectively “The Museum of Feelings,” Daniel Tucker explained: “For me, all the ‘Arts’ are about the experience of how it feels and what it means to be a human being. Consequently, I think that the mission of an artist in any field, is to communicate our common human experience in ways which are beautiful, touching, clear, provocative, responsible, and sublime. What I really want most from artists who engage me is the experience of ‘Ah Haa!’…” Which just happens to be the name of the school Tucker founded in Telluride a silver anniversary ago (1991), along with the American Academy of Bookbinding (1993), the first institution of its kind anywhere and the only one of its kind in America, now housed in the historic Stone Building. The schools which evolved organically from Tucker’s boyhood Telluride experience were – and are – all about the triumph of personal discovery. (The exclamation “Ah Haa”

140 workshops for kiddos and over 165 programs for adults. In all, that year over 12,000 combined students and visitors attended classes, events, and programs. And in 2016, the school employed six full-time staff and over 70 part-time instructors. What’s more Ah Haa is open 365 days a year. In recent history, all that activity, all the happiness happened in The Depot building. Ah Haa’s first home in the early ’90's was the Stronghouse Studios building, just down the block from the Transfer Warehouse, a structure Daniel Tucker renovated for that purpose. The school’s next move was into a space that had been an old brothel in Popcorn Alley. The so-called Silver Bell Building was central ops for the next 15 years from 19922007. In 2007, Ah Haa inked a deal to move into its current location, the old train Depot, a structure built in 1890 that

PEOPLE AND PLACES

sits along the San Miguel River. At the time, The Depot offered a much bigger playground. But as it turned out, not big enough, not art-specific or mutable enough. Space for an art school requires well-lit, flexible classrooms, safe ventilation systems, storage and sinks in every room, and areas that can easily be expanded or contracted based on programming requirements. The Depot did not have proper ventilation or lighting. Classrooms were small and not configured well and storage space was constrained. Because of these infrastructure limitations, inviting nationally renowned teachers to Ah Haa became a challenge, restricting the growth of key programs. Plans to renovate the Depot to address at least some of those needs were moving full steam ahead – that is until a relatively new, very astute board-member, Lisa Hogan, posed a simple, but compelling question at a meeting in February 2015: “Is this renovation going to provide enough space to operate as the long-term home of Ah Haa?” It was then that board chair Richard Cornelius and Ah Haa director Judy Kohin had, well, an Ah Haa moment and approached the town about the San Miguel Power site just across the street from the Telluride Library. At build-out, Ah Haa’s new address on the corner of Fir and Pacific, its very first purpose-built (read not historic) building, will be about 10,000 square feet or 3,000 more square feet than the Depot. What will the move mean for Ah Haa and the community it serves? Ah Haa’s menu of enrichment activities and special events will grow wider and deeper, allowing locals, secondhome owners and guests, youth and adults to enjoy a greater variety of enrichment activities taught by superior instructors, including many with national reputations. “We have always wanted to offer ceramic classes under the guidance of nationally recognized ceramicists,” explained Kohin. “Ceramic classes taught by visiting artists are on our agenda going forward, along with a permanent home for the Telluride Painting School under the direction of board member and long-time teacher, artist Robert Weatherford, plus more classes in the metal arts such as jewelry-making, even cooking classes. In fact, plans for the new building include a demonstration kitchen on the third floor of the structure. There will also be a reference library that doubles as a conference room and a permanent, year-round gallery and store to support local and regional artists and students, and hopefully open studio space for artists to drop in to work at various times during the year.” "Establishing a core of arts-based organizations within the center of our town will increase community cohesion, allow for greater access to a wide range of ideas, opportunities, and experiences by community members and visitors, provide a shared social locus that engages a diversity of people and also creates economic incentive for community investment,” said Weatherford. ”It’s a win-win-win for Telluride.” Many of the opportunities inherent in the move to The Corner came down to location, location, location. Proximity allows Ah Haa and the other two organizations with similar goals – Telluride Arts and the Library – to maximize natural synergies.

“Telluride is not a big town, but still, being right across the street from the Wilkinson Public Library will strengthen our existing educational partnership with their team. We might, for example, host an artist lecture in the Library’s Program Room, then move across the street to paint or collaborate on a group project that results in a work of art based on the talk,” continued Kohin. “And we see Telluride Arts’ Transfer Warehouse as the go-to for major events, interactive, collaborative installations such as major visual arts and music happenings featuring guest teachers.” Securing this cost-effective, purpose-built space has one more very positive impact – one that hits Ah Haa’s bottom line. Arts-based nonprofits across the country share a similar challenge: tuition rarely if ever covers more than half the operating expenses required to mount classes. To thrive, even simply survive, nonprofits like Ah Haa have to rely on grants and a community of donors who believe in the school’s mission. Moving to a central location, to the very heart of town and the Telluride Arts District, and adding value with additional and specialized classrooms, should attract more foot traffic and more students, which means more dollars through the door. “One of our goals is to become more financially sustainable, which means breaking even on expenses so we are less burdened with raising additional funds to cover our costs,” added Kohin. “In our new building our overall operations should be more efficient.” In general, consistent with group think and community desires summed up in the updated Cultural Master Plan, Ah Haa together with Telluride Arts, the Transfer Building and the Telluride Library, will anchor and animate an arts and cultural district in important and exciting as yet unscripted ways. Last but not least, the new Ah Haa site includes – drumroll please – parking spaces. “During my first visit to Telluride, a long-time local informed me that a member of the Lifton-Zoline family envisioned the intersection of Pacific and Fir as an integral part of Telluride’s core. More specifically, that intersection was to be a collection of vibrant, mixed-use structures that would sit atop an underground parking structure. As a jaded New Yorker, I discounted that possibility as a pipe dream. Last year, vision trounced skepticism. By that time, I had evolved into a local business owner and Telluride’s mayor. Looking to its future, the Ah Haa School approached the Town of Telluride with an innovative proposal to relocate and expand their educational offerings at the corner of Pacific and Fir. Farsighted town staff made the case for affordable housing and underground parking in the underserved downtown core at the same location. Representatives of local arts, cultural, and educational organizations stressed the value of the juxtaposition of the Wilkinson Public Library with the renovated Transfer Warehouse and the Ah Haa School’s new facility, forming a ‘Golden Triangle' at the corner of Pacific and Fir. Suddenly, the once-discounted Lifton-Zoline vision moved from pipe dream to tangible reality. The combination of the arts, affordable housing, and public parking at the intersection of Pacific and Fir is not only the highest and best use of that intersection, but also the highest and best achievement of public benefit at that intersection,” said Mayor Sean Murphy.

WILKINSON PUBLIC LIBRARY STAYING THE COURSE; ENHANCING THE REMIX

How does the Wilkinson Public Library fit into the picture? Nicely, thank you. The Library Journal Index is a national rating system designed to recognize and promote America’s public libraries, help improve the pool of nationally collected library statistics, and encourage library self-evaluation. To receive a Library Journal Index score, an institution must have a legal service area population of at least 1,000; spend at least $10,000 annually; and report all of the data required to calculate its score. Eligible libraries are grouped by total operating expenditures and then within each of those groups, rated based on how those five measures compare to the peer group’s averages. The Telluride Library falls into San Miguel Public Library District #1 and serves a population of just over 6,500 in five communities within district boundaries. In 2014, the year from which the statistics were used for the 2016 rating, the Wilkinson Public Library experienced 263,267 library visits, circulated 226,000 materials, saw 47,000 people attending programs, had 46,000 public internet computer uses, and 7,800 materials in electronic circulation. In 2016, for the ninth consecutive year in a row, the Wilkinson Public Library earned a “five star” rating from the Library Journal, joining seven other libraries in Colorado to be recognized nationally with a “star ranking,” but Telluride was the only Colorado five-star institution of its kind in the mix. “WPL continues to earn this ranking due the hard-working and creative staff and because of our awesome community of supportive patrons,” said library director Sarah Landeryou. Now 42 years old, the history of the library goes back to the

mid-Sixties, when a bookmobile came to Telluride once a week. When Larry and Betty Wilkinson arrived in town, they met with the fire department to request a community library space in the Quonset Hut, which once stood next to the current elementary school. The Quonset Hut library was open two or three days a week, three or four hours a day. The collection consisted of local donations and discarded books from other libraries. The entire donation-only budget went towards coal to heat the place. In 1974, the Wilkinsons approached the San Miguel County Commissioners with a petition of 100 signatures to put a library on the ballot. With voter approval, the first library board of trustees was appointed and Betty was hired as director. Eventually the library outgrew the Quonset Hut and Larry went before the town council for permission to use the old stone jail on Spruce Street. With the council’s blessing, the town got a grant from the National Park Service and the jail was renovated. That summer, the Wilkinsons hauled 20 tons of rock in the back of their van, three or four rocks at a time. In 1976, the new library was dedicated at the site of the former town slammer. By 1984, the library was bursting at its seams, so the board introduced a bond issue to add on to the facility. The measure passed. But as the town continued to grow, it became clear the library required a building specifically designed to hold books, not prisoners. In 1997, a town referendum to construct a purpose-built library was passed. The new, 20,000 square-foot Wilkinson Public Library opened in August 2000. As a community center, historically and increasingly over the years, the Telluride Library has focused on 21st-century learning skills, inspiring personal discovery in an inviting, comfortable, caring environment – which is about to undergo even more improvements.

According to Landeryou, the Library’s mission of providing cradle-to-grave resources for residents and guests of the Telluride community will remain the same even when the Transfer Warehouse and Ah Haa’s new home are complete – however, she looks forward to collaborating once the three nonprofits become neighbors. “We at the library plan to stay focused on our mission, which is connecting people to the world of ideas through books, magazines, and digital media. But we can easily envision lots of ways to work more closely with Ah Haa and Telluride Arts once we are living more closely together,” she said. “For example, I see the Transfer Warehouse as our go-to for major gatherings and parties. I see our existing collaborations with Ah Haa, such as staging artist lectures in support of the school’s guest instructors, becoming richer, more creative and more fun. Unlike Telluride Arts and Ah Haa, the Library is supported by public dollars, to be exact, an operating mill levy. We can use that funding to expand and enhance opportunities for the entire community and everyone wins. We can’t know right now what those joint adventures might be, but Kate Jones, Judy Kohin, and I are committed to finding ways to complement one another with the clear goal of further enhancing the lives of everyone we serve.” "The Wilkinson Public Library is excited to be located in the heart of what will soon be Telluride's cultural and arts district. We look forward to the potential for collaboration with both Ah Haa and Telluride Arts in the future as we are certain that combining our efforts will broaden service offerings and programming for our collective patrons,” added Amanda Kotlyar, president, board of trustees, Wilkinson Public Library.

FIR & PACIFIC

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT At build-out a few years from now, three buildings will house three robust non-profits, forming a triangle. Triangles are one of the most powerful and universal symbols, interpreted in a variety of ways: father, mother, child, sky, earth, lower world, etc. But the one that resonates in this particular case is body, mind, and soul. Individually as they have done, but to an even greater extent collectively, when developments at Fir and Pacific are complete, Telluride Arts and the Transfer Warehouse, Ah Haa, and the Telluride Library will feed the body, mind, and soul of the greater Telluride community. What’s more, key drivers of Telluride’s cultural economy such as the Telluride Film Festival, Telluride Mountainfilm, and yes, even the Telluride Library, have been clamoring for more meeting and event space for years, and more space to make art emerged as a key need out of the Cultural Master Plan. Now those long-term hopes and dreams have a relatively near-term fix. The common ground the three nonprofits will find should unlock as yet untapped community potential, fostering a culture that supports individual aspirations while widening and deepening people’s connection to the world of culture and ideas. The development of Telluride’s cultural core on Fir and Pacific encapsulates what Telluride is all about: small in size only; Big WOW! factor. There’s no business like show me business, but it appears that at the corner of Fir and Pacific, Telluride’s cultural core, the sky’s the limit.

Now pull out your brushes and paint the picture Colorado blue. The triune of the corner of Fir & Pacific: Truly Telluride at its best.

Penelope Gleason, co-founder and owner of BootDoctor, and board chair of Telluride Arts summed up: “The dream for the arts to have a permanent place in the center of our community is finally becoming reality. The project has been in the making for the better part of the 20 years I have made Telluride my home. Our community has always known the value of the arts, from early theater during the mining days to the diverse arts menu we all share and enjoy today. Arts are how we truly embody our humanity. Shared experiences as audiences at movies, music concerts, poetry readings, exhibits, workshops, and lectures help us to discover and appreciate our similarities and differences. Such interactions are the foundation of community, compassion and respect that help us transcend our differences and inspire us to engage in positive social interactions. For me, Telluride Arts, Ah Haa, and the Wilkinson Library were, and still are, essential cornerstones of the Telluride community. Yes, many of us came to ski or hike or bike, but it is the depth and diversity of our intellectual and creative assets that kept us here. The opportunity to have these three essential and symbiotic institutions of learning, expression, creativity and shared experiences in the very center of our community is truly going to quicken Telluride’s already strong cultural pulse. Having this great depth and breadth of cultural offerings in our area should encourage our young people to stay. It diversifies our economic base. Having Telluride branded as both a ski resort and a cultural haven should also even out seasonal economic spikes and valleys. I encourage everyone to get involved at whatever level they can to develop the ‘art and soul’ of our community by supporting the Transfer Warehouse and the development of Fir and Pacific in general. Guaranteed life will be enriched by the experience. Mine certainly has been.”
