BIG PICTURE: TELLURIDE DELIVERS BASIC BRICKS & MORTAR EDUCATION WITH EXCELLENCE, BUT LEARNING IS ALL ABOUT LEVERAGING THE REGION'S UNIQUE ASSETS – SMALL SIZE, BIG MOUNTAINS, NATURAL BEAUTY, BRAIN TRUST, DEEP POCKETS, DEPTH AND BREADTH OF NON PROFITS – TO PROVIDE CUSTOMIZED AND POTENTIALLY LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCES FOR STUDENTS OF ALL AGES, INCLUDING THE VERY YOUNG, WHEN IC(UTE) IS AN IMPORTANT MEASURE.
TRADITIONAL EDUCATION, IN NAME ONLY: BRIGHT FUTURES, R-1 SCHOOL DISTRICT & THE MOUNTAIN SCHOOL: Bright Futures: Leg up for the formative years, 18 months – 5 years In one throat-clearing paragraph in his inaugural address, President Obama 86ed the tired (and false) notion that education begins at five and made bold-faced what the research has long indicated: a child’s quality of life and the contributions he or she will make to society can be directly traced to the first few years of life, back to those first 2,000 days. In other words, you are largely who you are by age 5. We know through research that high-quality early education yields higher graduation rates, reduced crime, higher earnings, and better jobs. As a result, economists estimate that every dollar invested in early education produces a 10% return on investment through increased personal achievement and social productivity and a $7 savings down the line, facts which require a profound act of critical self-noticing for parents. Early childhood investments are known to produce sustained results at the local, state, and national level, critical to keeping the United States competitive in a global market. Enter "Bright Futures for Early Childhood and Families," the Telluride-based child care resource and referral agency for San Miguel, Delta, Montrose, and Ouray counties. "Bright Futures" is one of 30 early childhood councils in the state of Colorado charged with helping to develop systems of support in each county for early care and education, health, mental health, and family concerns. For the past seven years, the organization has been run by executive director Cathy James. Cathy has lived in Telluride for 35 years. She taught kindergarten at the Telluride Elementary School for eight years. She wrote grants for the school district for six years. Her best credential for the job? Cathy is the mother of three super smart, productive adults and four awesome grandchildren. "In 1950, 2 out of 10 women worked. Today, 8 out of 10 mothers work full time," explained Cathy.

To support working parents, Telluride currently has 10 programs serving children and their families. Three centers feature toddler programs, serving children 18 months – 3 years. Seven centers are pre-school, serving children ages 3 – 5, helping them prepare for kindergarten. Each program offers an academic component, but with its own unique spin. One program stresses art, music and world peace; one is a strong Montessori environment; others deliver social, emotional and experiential education, including walkabouts to explore Telluride's environment. All of the programs are licensed by the State of Colorado and childcare providers receive at least 15 hours of continuing education. All receive strong support by local parents and the community. The programs are as follows: Telluride • Montessori at Mountain School: Preschool for ages 3-5, serving 34 children • Rainbow: Preschool serving 3-5, 38 children • Mountain Sprouts: Preschool for ages 3-5 years, 14 children, stressing art, music, world peace • Telluride Early Childhood Center (TECC) at the public school: Preschool for ages 3-5 years, 22 children • Telluride Preschool: Ages 3-5 years, serving 29 children • Rascals: Toddlers 18 months – 3 years, serving 22 children at Lawson Hill • Toddler Town: 18 months – 3 years, 12 children Mountain Village • Mountain Munchkins: Infants, toddlers, preschool, serving 60 children. In addition to the aforementioned programs, the Telluride region offers a wide range of enrichment activities for children of all ages (detailed below and expanded upon throughout the article), even activities for birth – 5, such as the following: • Comets: Ski lessons for 3 – 5 year olds • Telluride Town Park: Swimming lessons for ages 2 – 5 • Gymnastics/Cross-Fit: Offered at Lawson Hill • Art and music classes: See details below for the Ah Haa School • Palm Dance: Details below, but starting at age 2 • Wilkinson Public Library: Story Hour, birth – 5 (See below for much more on youth programs at the Wilkinson) To learn more, go to www.BrightFuturesForChildren.org or call 1-877-728-5613 (or locally, 970-728-5613).

Telluride Region's R-1 School District: 3Rs plus Telluride's growing R-1 School District includes 780 students, an addition of 100 students over the last two years and growing. The average class size for grades K –6 stands at 20; for grades 7 – 12, the number moves up slightly to 23. The national average, according to school superintendent Kyle Schumacher, is close to 27 students. In the school year 2012/2013, Telluride Elementary School was recognized by the State of Colorado as a model site for working with students with autism. The Middle School won the Distinguished Governor's Award, placing it in the top 20 percent in the state. Telluride High School was honored to receive a Colorado John Irwin Schools of Excellence Award, given to schools that demonstrate excellent academic achievement. That honor placed it in the top 10 percent of high schools in the state. The High School was also ranked in Newsweek's top 10 high schools in Colorado in 2012 . The R-1 School District offers a wide variety of Advanced Placement (AP) classes in social sciences, math, humanities and art. World language offerings include Spanish (grades 6 – 12) and French (high school only). At one point in his career, Schumacher, who holds a bachelors degree in music education, taught music and served as instrumental music director in the Chicago area, so it comes as no big surprise Telluride's performing arts programs, including music, are strong. Band is offered in grades 6 – 12; fine arts in grades K – 12; and drama in grades 4 – 12. Drama is taught co-curricular (as opposed to extra-curricular), which means the 4th-grade musical and the 5th-grade Shakespeare program are exciting ways to enhance the day-to-day learning going on in the classroom. To further enrich the basic curriculum in the sciences, social studies, and languages, Schumacher and the R-1 school district also enjoy partnering with local non profits such as the Telluride Historical Museum; the Pinhead Institute, which brings Ph.D. scientists into the schools to share their special areas of interests ("Scholars in the School"); the Telluride Institute; and EcoAction Partners, the region's sustainability initiative, to further studies in environmental sciences, with a focus on unique attributes of the San Miguel Basin. The R-1 School District is also a participant in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education Coalition, which works to support STEM programs for teachers and students through grants from the U. S. Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, and other agencies. Why is that so important?
PEOPLE
STEM job creation over the next 10 years will outpace nonSTEM job significantly, growing 17%, as compared to 9.8% for non-STEM positions. Sixty percent of new jobs opening up in the 21st century will require skills possessed by only 20% of the current workforce. People in STEM fields can expect to earn 26% more money on average and be less likely to experience job loss. And the U.S. needs students to focus on STEM to secure our future: the U.S. now ranks 35th in math and 29th in science worldwide. Not good news. Thankfully Schumacher is a strong and well-qualified believer in innovative education to prepare students for a future that is changing shape at an alarming rate. He is also an advocate for the positive role parents and community can play in shaping young lives. Having recently completed a doctorate in educational leadership at Northern Illinois University, Schumacher understands the importance of creating relevant educational opportunities for our students that integrate community resources. To that end, Schumacher has partnered with his counterpart at Telluride's five-star Wilkinson Public Library, director Barb Brattin. Through a program called "Looking at Literacies," they are challenging themselves to find ways to help build technology literacies among students and parents alike to ensure local students are ready for the world outside our box canyon. "Telluride is a small town with big town resources," explained Schumacher. "Many of the people who settle here are among the best and brightest in the country. We are also blessed with a large pool of non profits that focus on the arts and sciences. My success as the superintendent of schools is directly related to my ability to leverage the Telluride region's unique resources to provide extraordinary customized learning experiences that only a town of our size can manage effectively and efficiently." Telluride R-1 school district also profits from one other local asset: heart. Each year the community gives between $80 – $115K worth of scholarships to our students. Some are based on financial need; others on academic accomplishment. Scholarships range from $200 to $15,000. Between 60% and 80% of students receive scholarships of some amount. canyons, wilderness areas, and rivers surrounding Telluride. Specifically, beginning in 1st and 2nd grades, students take multi-day trips, extending their classroom learning into the field. As students progress through grades and experience in the school, trips become more challenging: 7th/8th graders took a marine biology trip to Hawaii: there was a 9th/10th grade trip to Oaxaca, Mexico; and a 12th grade trip to Vietnam. All trips include a service component that encourages students to build connections between one another and to the communities they visit. Hands-on learning doesn’t stop there. Project-based learning is a part of the classroom, with students doing mock trials in history class and snow pack investigations in science class. With such rich, multi-faceted education, the addition of the Telluride Mountain School has greatly expanded the community’s educational offerings. And now there's more. Beginning in the 2012/2013 school year, Telluride Mountain School, in partnership with the Telluride Ski and Snowboard Club, added new programmatic elements to its high school curriculum geared specifically towards the student-athlete, featuring customized plans during the winter season to allow for competition and travel. In addition to pursuing athletic excellence with intensive on-snow training, skiers and riders are required to maintain a challenging academic program that promotes critical thinking, aesthetic expression, and ethical behavior. The combination of excellence in athleticism and academics is a traditional path to the U.S. Ski Team and NCAA glory. And while the subject is on-mountain training, both the Mountain School and the R-1 School District collaborate with the Telluride Adaptive Sports Program to provide disability awareness for young students. Several of those students went on to volunteer for TASP. For further information, contact Jenny Page, program director, Ski Academy, 970-729-0913 or www.telluridemtnschool.org
"A" FOR THE TELLURIDE ACADEMY & THE AH HAA SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS: Beyond the 3Rs and non-traditional traditional education, the Telluride region is home to over 100 non profits, many offering young people rare extracurricular learning opportunities. Two of those signature institutions that stimulate the brave act of self exploration are the Telluride Academy and the Ah Haa School for the Arts.
Telluride Academy: A potpourri of enrichment activities including arts, sciences, and sports What happens in Never Never Land after the snow melts? Where do the kids go?
A simple answer for 33 years has been the Telluride Academy, easily one of the most highly respected non profits in the 'hood. The beginning was modest. In 1981, Wendy Brooks, a single mom with three young boys of her own started a daycare/ camp to help other working mothers. By 1991, the Academy became a non-profit and formed a board of directors. That same year, thanks to advice from a friend, Brooks began to market to a growing population of second homeowners. “Larry Potter realized that largely because of the Academy, Telluride had a chance to define itself as a family-friendly yearround resort," explained Brooks. "He also understood those parents wanted time alone, but weekends with their kids. His plan became the format still in place at the Academy today: primarily week-day programming, including Wednesday campouts for most students." The schedule worked perfectly for locals too, who were in need of quality care for their children during the summer months when school was not in session. Many of the new second homeowners were also looking for ways to meet people and become engaged in their new community. The Academy proved to be the socially integrative force that would unite them with one another and with primary residents through a shared love of their children and experiences. These days enrollment at the award-winning Telluride Academy has reached 800+, but each program is capped at 12 students to maintain a feeling of interconnectedness and intimacy among students and instructors. Its curriculum, balanced skillfully among a wide array of activities, totals 100+ unique after-school and summer enrichment programs targeting young people ages 5-18. The Academy's “New Horizon” after-school programs run during the academic year and offer adventures in rock climbing, mountain biking and theater. Summer programs begin as soon as local schools close for summer break and end in late August and include a dazzling array of enrichment opportunities: hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, science, environmental education, theater, and regional and international exploration. Through the support of private donors as well as the National Inclusion Project, R-word.org and Telluride’s Adaptive Sports Program, Telluride Academy is proud to welcome and encourage ALL children, including those with disabilities, to experience their unique programming. “Through these wonderful collaborations, we now have the resources to better serve children with special needs in an inclusive environment” explains Telluride Academy executive director, Elaine Demas. “An inclusive environment means that children with disabilities explore, play and learn alongside children without disabilities. They are not separated. The added support makes Academy programming accessible to more children and that make us very happy.” From the get-go, Telluride Academy has offered tuition assistance to ensure a diverse population of young people in the mix. In 2012 alone, the Academy awarded $173,000 in tuition assistance, which supported 280 local children. Providing this type of financial assistance would not be possible without the generous support of countless Academy families, Organizations and Businesses who make annual financial contributions to support the Organization’s tuition assistance fund. Creating the magic that makes it all work, truly does take an entire village. For further information: www.tellurideacademy.org or call (970) 728-5311
Ah Haa School for the Arts: Exploring a wide variety of mediums is child's play At the Ah Haa School for the Arts the emphasis is clearly on ART, with the concept stretched as far as the imagination can travel. Ah Haa was founded in 1990 by the visionary book artist and one-time wilderness guide Daniel Tucker, who fell in love with Telluride when he was a boy of 13. In 1989, Tucker's mother passed away and left him some money. He decided to use his inheritance to give back. Like his life, the school he founded would be about the triumph of personal discovery: "Ah Haa" is a close approximation of the Greek "eureka," the utterance attributed to Archimedes upon discovering a method for determining the purity of gold. After 17 years being housed in the Silver Bell building, an old brothel in Popcorn Alley, Ah Haa needed more leg room. In 2007, the school inked a deal to move into its current location, the old train Depot that sits along the San Miguel River, which offers a much bigger playground. Built in 1890, the last Gallop-
Throughout the year, Ah Haa offers classes for beginners and seasoned artists, including over 120 classes for kids. In fact, nurturing the artistic spirit of young people has been a part of the school’s mission from the get-go. Where else can a 12-year-old study welding or emerging chefs visit a local farmers' market, select fresh, organic ingredients, and learn how to prepare a delicious meal from local delicacies? Painting. Stained glass. Jewelry. Ceramics. Every Ah Haa course for kids offers a total immersion in the creative process – including for the very young, ages 1 – 4. Kindermusik, for example, develops language skills and fosters singing, sound imitation and rhyming, while encouraging creative dancing to develop a sense of balance, timing, and spatial awareness. Classes specifically designed for teens, such as screen-printing with Jennifer Gormley, delve deep into technique and imagery. The big news is a series of art workshops for elementary and middle school students that launches in fall 2013. The structured program for budding young artists is based on an 8-12week progression designed to develop a love of art-making that will last a lifetime, with a focus first on "seeing," then on "doing." Instruction in foundational skills promises to nurture the imagination and support personal expression. Classes for kids take place throughout the school year, with summer classes starting the second week of June. HIGH DRAMA – PLUS SINGING AND DANCING: Drama: Mudd Butts and SAFYPT The Mudd Butts Mystery Drama Camp is a long-standing program of the Telluride Academy. In the mid-1980’s, the idea to create a drama program for kids in Telluride had been blowing in the wind. In 1987, under the auspices of the Academy’s former executive director and founder Wendy Brooks, the seed took root. Sally Davis, Kim Epifano became co-directors. On the very first day of the very first Mudd Butts program, students took a hike up to Cornet Creek to spend time outdoors getting to know each other. The fast track home was a slide down. "Butts" got muddy. The name followed and stuck like, umm, wet mud. Mudd Butts Mystery Theater is a four-week theater intensive covering all aspects of what it takes to make a theatrical performance happen. Students, ages 10 – 13, explore theater games, script and songwriting, improvisation, dance, voice, prop design, and creation, even performance marketing. But that's only what's described in the Academy's brochure. Read between the lines and it becomes clear young people fortunate enough to participate in Mudd Butts Mystery Theater wind up acquiring invaluable and indelible life tools. Students meet their inner artist while developing confidence and discovering ways to laugh at themselves and navigate the mind field of group dynamics. What the directors are also after is broadening students’ perspectives about social, political, and environmental issues.
5
Throughout the early years, Mudd Butts thrived and grew. In 1993, the troupe took their show to the international stage traveling first to Slovakia. Mudd Butts International or “MBI” was born. To date “MBI” students have visited 19 countries as diplomats without portfolio, forging relationships and developing mutual understanding and respect for young neighbors around the globe through the medium of theater. "We love the collaborative aspect of our work: children and teens creating with adult artists. Our focus is experimentation, self-exploration, and a combination of art forms," explained Davis and Epifano, the troupe's guiding angels for the past 27 years. Sally Davis is a musician, theater director, performer and arts educator and Kim Epifano, an award-winning choreographer, director, performer, vocalist and educator. Sally and Kim have collaborated over the years with many artists including prop master Mike Stasiuk, photographer John Fago, writer/painter Pam Zoline and screen writer and musician Clay Frohman. "We still do this after 27 years because the work transforms us all and challenges every one of us creatively to push the envelope," continued Sally and Kim."Mudd Butt actors give us new perspective on just about everything in the world. Our 19 Mudd Butt International trips have added an incredibly rich layer to the overall Mudd Butts experience, which is unique for all involved." Mudd Butts takes place, as most Academy programs do, during the summer. Mudd Butts International, however, happens annually in April during Telluride’s Spring Break. The Sheridan Arts Foundation's Young People's Theatre happens all year. (For information, see Academy.)
SAFYPT is synonymous with its artistic director, Jen Julia, who came to town in 1999 with a twinkle in her eye and was met with skepticism. Didn't Telluride already have a theatre program for young people. Wasn't Mudd Butts enough? Julia met the naysayers with talent and energy to burn. Imitating the hero of her very first production, "Peter Pan," she pointed to second star on the right and led the way. A group of girls and boys followed tentatively at first, then flying high from their beginning acting experience, they returned for more theatrical fun under Julia's tender, loving care. Watching their kids on stage, kids watching their friend rock out, audiences of all ages fell in love with Julia and the young stars she helped shape. Suddenly acting was cool. Even for super jocks. From two plays a year and 45 students 14 years ago, SAFYPT
Mudd Myste But t s ry Th eater Telluride Choral Society
has grown to include a wide range of classes and instructors and nearly 200 students ages 3 – 18. How does theatre training change a child, how does it pay off in the long run? "Time and time again, we hear it from parents, teachers, and students: our program not only builds confidence in children, but a larger, more refined understanding of self. Theatre heightens understanding of the world and your place in it. It is an opportunity for deep interpersonal and intra-personal learning and growth. Non-competitive and nurturing drama experiences wake kids up to their own potential. Kids who graduated from the YPT long ago keep in touch and often say that their time on our stage was life-changing." "Drama allows the student to discover what he knows, what he understands, what he thinks and feels about his knowledge, what he needs to know, and how to help him find that knowledge," said Juliana Saxton, one of the world's most respected drama educators (and Julia's grad school prof) from her book "Teaching Drama (1987)." To this day, Julia maintains a strict policy of no auditions and an adherence to a seniority system: younger students receive smaller roles; older students get the leads. "Our policy demonstrates to participants and audience members alike that all of our young actors have the power to succeed on stage. For some it comes easier, for others, it is a process of unlocking what is hidden inside, often under layers of self-doubt. Our casting system reinforces what we want all students to truly know: they are capable." This year, on the closing night of "Godspell," a group of 12 seniors graduated. "Kids that start early in our program (as that group did) graduate with an average 3660 hours of rehearsal and performance time on our stage. As seniors, most of them had delivered 183 live performances. That's commitment. And a lot of sweat!," said Julia in closing. Telluride Choral Society: Three groups for young singers Choral Society's youngest choir is the Choristers, which typically includes children in grades 3-5 (though artistic director Rhonda Muckerman occasionally allows second graders with some formal music training to participate). At this level, young students learn good vocal production, as well as how to navigate through choral music. They develop some reading skills, as well as learn how to sing within an ensemble and watch the director. For students in grades 6-12, there is Omni Voce, which encourages more mature vocal production, including tackling two & three part harmony. Reading skills are also further refined and students are, at times, allowed to make suggestions with regard to the program repertoire. From Omni Voce, high school students (grades 9-12) can move into Emanon. The group offers the opportunity to sing a capella (unaccompanied), create unique arrangements of songs, and perform solos. All of the choirs offer training in vocal production, sightreading, ensemble and soloist skills, which contribute to the students' development into confident, literate, and expressive musicians. The three choirs perform in WinterSing and KidSing concerts throughout the year. Rhonda Muckerman, who runs the show, has been teaching professionally for 27 years. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in music education from Michigan State University and a master of music degree in conducting from the College-Conservatory of Music/University of Cincinnati. Rhonda began her career as a professional flautist and band director, then added voice and choral teaching to her repertoire since moving to Telluride in 1994. She has taught in schools around the country, most recently in the Telluride and Norwood school districts. PINHEAD: A SMITHSONIAN AFFILIATE INSTITUTE OFFERING SCIENCE-BASED PROGRAMS FOR KIDS AND TEENS Why is the sky blue? Why are slugs slimy? How do boats float? Those are questions you would ask a Pinhead. How the word "pinhead" entered the Telluride lexicon is a
One version of the story suggests the term "pinhead" refers to the original geeks running around Telluride at the turn of the 20th century. It seems Nunn had developed a work-study program to get alternating current to run his mine. The initiative was so successful, he bought more mines in Colorado and Utah, spreading his scholars around. Nunn kept track of the whereabouts of his minions by sticking pushpins into maps. A geek tends to be odd, overly intellectual – in this country, anyone who chomps arugula over fries – and generally prefers his computer to other human interests. Geeks tend to wear totemic Clark Kent glasses and are authentically unhip. A nerd is simply a geek with more RAM and a faster modem. Geek and nerd often rhyme with dweeb, a person regarded as socially inept or foolish, often on account of being overly studious. What is a Pinhead? None of the above. A Pinhead is a kid who knows how the world works. It is someone who can gain the skills needed to scientifically figure things out. Founded in 2002, the Pinhead Institute is all about bio-literacy in the region, which means bringing science to kids through a wide variety of programs for all ages: Scholars in the Schools imports leading scientists into regional schools to lead labs, experiments, workshops, and field expeditions. Punk Science, No School Science Projects, Pinhead Packs, Super Summer Science Camps, and the Stargazing Series are other examples of programs that allow kids to engage in science with top tier professionals from a wide range of disciplines here in their own backyard. But Pinhead also brings young people to cool science. Founded in 2003, Pinhead Internship program places regional students from Nucla, Telluride, Ridgway, and Ouray High Schools at renowned scientific institutions to work with leading researchers on critical issues facing the world today, including climate change, biodiversity, health, technology, genetics and more. WILKINSON PUBLIC LIBRARY: NO INSTITUTION MORE "TRULY TELLURIDE' Libraries across the country are in a period of reinvention, with Telluride's Wilkinson Public Library way ahead of the curve. Telluride's five-star library is what Telluride itself is all about: small in size only. Big WOW! factor. In the budget category of $1 – 5 million, Telluride's library is the busiest in the nation for computer use and the 7th highest in the country for program attendance per capita: "We serve twice as many people as the population in our district and we check out 300,000 items to 11,000 cardholders each year, 5X as much as an average library, explained Brattin."Library Journal has awarded us five stars, its highest ranking, five years in a row." But the real success of the Wilkinson Public Library lies in the way the institution builds community: "Ask anyone in town and they will describe the library as the 'heart' of Telluride, a true community center," Brattin adds. "Our new service plan is entitled 'Building Common Ground,' something we do every day. We are focused on developing 21st-century learning skills, challenging the community

programming for young adults. Its collection boasts all of the latest in teen fiction with fresh titles coming in each month and an emphasis on popular genres such as dystopian sci-fi and Steampunk. "The Wilkinson Public Library’s Teen Services Department offers hands-on, out-of-the-box, educational opportunities for teens. Throughout the year, teens can attend everything from big author visits to reoccurring weekly programs. Current afterschool program offerings for teens include a Monday Chess Club, a Tuesday Hip Hop Club, Wednesday Cooking Club, Thursday Wii Gaming Day, and Friday Book Club." The Hip Hop Club taught in conjunction by Teen Services staff member, Tony Saab and a musically talented local teen is particularly popular.
through civic engagement, fostering civility, and inspiring individual discovery in a compassionate, inviting, comfortable environment. Our mission boils down to four words: Challenge, Inspire, Engage, Transform." The Wilkinson Public Library is a whole that is great because of the sum of its parts, one of which is the buzzing Children's Area. "Wilkinson Public Library is built on the principle that children learn primarily by interacting with others and their environment, as well as listening and reading," explained Paula Ciberay, Youth Services and Outreach Manager. Developmentally, a child learns through play. "In the youth area, traditional materials are mixed in with enriched opportunities to explore the world directly. Almost daily we hear from both locals and tourists that this is the best library they have ever 'experienced.'" Blocks and Legos develop math skills. "The marble roll is an experiment in Physics. Opportunities to learn about sequencing are available through wooden beads and trains. Children acquire social skills through dramatic play and puppets. They understand how to cooperate through board games. We serve the whole child, not solely the intellect. So you will find a welcoming, warm, child-friendly space, staffed with caring individuals who are eager to create community."
"Students have learned about the history and evolution of hip hop music and are currently producing their own hip hop song from scratch. To accomplish this, participants create a beat using Garage Band and write their own lyrics using poetic techniques like alliteration and imagery." WPL’s Teen Summer Reading Program offers teens the opportunity to keep learning when school is out. "While reading is a big part of it, the program also encourages teens to be creative through art, media, and writing. To that end, participants are encouraged to enter the summer video, writing, art, and photography contests. Winners are announced at the end of summer party which takes place after regular hours at the library. The party ends with a game of hide and seek in the library, which is a big hit with the teens." The common thread in all of WPL’s teen programming is an emphasis on experiential learning and personal expression. "Our programming is carefully designed to teach 21st century skills including critical thinking, innovation, and collaboration. Teens are encouraged to suggest ideas for new programs or to exhibit their talents by running programs themselves. Even when formal programs aren’t occurring, the library’s teen area is alive with teens. Board games, craft supplies, and computers are always on hand, allowing teens to engage in spontaneous fun and learning on their terms anytime they like," concluded Dickson. For further information, contact Paula Ciberay at (970) 728-4519, ext. 29 or Elissa Dickson at ext. 13 or go to www.telluridelibrary. org.
Programming begins with expectant parents and blossoms into Story Times and Summer Reading programs which include infants through school-aged children. "In order to support the mind/body connection we have Yoga Story Time and Wiggle (Dance) Time. The schoolaged child will find a variety of activities such as Kid’s Cook, in which children teach each other how to make nutritious foods. Activity Wednesdays explores every interest a child can imagine. In March, we experimented with science, offering kids ways to get multiple opportunities to become little Albert Einsteins. Examples of other activities are crocheting, wire sculpture, and duct tape wallets. There are opportunities for Book Clubs, Poetry Uprisings, Family Literacy Nights and Noche de la Familia (which is a bilingual literacy night). We invite you to experience the world through your library where there are no limits when it comes to learning," Ciberay concludes. Moving chronologically through sections and stacks, Teen Services, run by Elissa Dickson, is at the forefront of library

by Susan Viebrock of Telluride Inside... and Out Perhaps the scientists are wrong, but memories of last season hang in like a really bad cold. It was the fourth warmest winter on record since 1896 and the warm temperatures and meager snowfall kept skiers at bay. In the Rockies, where early conditions this year were spotty at best, average winter temperatures are expected to rise as much as 7 degrees F. by the end of the century. What? Me worry? The century is still brand new. Used to the whims of the weather gods, many ski industry executives simply shrug their shoulders at the Cassandra-like predictions, taking comfort from historical trends that show good winters generally follow bad. But what if their pie-in-the-sky thinking is even a little bit wrong? If a good option is available, why not play it safe and at least hedge your bet? Enter the Telluride Foundation, an organization that is, according to its innovative executive director, Paul Major, "totally agnostic about the politics of the region," but also totally committed to improving the quality of life in our extended community of Telluride, Mountain Village, Ouray and west Montrose Counties. Telluride Venture Accelerator, a new initiative of the Telluride Foundation, is a potential hedge against a future of decreasing snowpack in the region. If Lady Luck smiles and TVA works as planned, then the program could serve to enhance and stretch the Telluride brand: we are a ski resort AND a place with an international reputation for supporting new business development. We are an accelerator. What is an accelerator? Paul Bricault, co-founder of the Los Angeles-based accelerator Amplify, was quoted in a recent article in Inc. magazine. He defined an "accelerator' as a initiative that "takes single-digit chunks of equity in externally developed ideas in return for small amounts of capital and mentorship. They’re generally truncated into a three- to four-month program at the end of which the start-ups ‘graduate.’” The term "incubator," on the other hand, applies to an idea developed internally and managed by a team brought in from the outside. Those proposals tend to have longer gestation periods than "accelerated" ideas and also demand larger chunks of equity. Telluride Venture Accelerator is the only business starter in the country laser-focused in the fields of outdoor recreation, tourism, natural products, health, energy, water and education, categories that grew organically out of regional interests. The initiative is also a tour de force of creative thinking and perseverance, two essential ingredients of successful entrepreneurship. L.L. Nunn, George Westinghouse, and Nikola Tesla and the development of A.C. electricity originated in Telluride. Why not add more game-changers to the local list? The Telluride Foundation itself was founded by game-changers.

But is it a sure bet? Of course not. Does it matter? Nope.
Ron Allred discovered Telluride in 1979. He purchased the Telluride Ski Resort and developed it into a world-class destination. Hideo "Joe" Morita's passion for Telluride evolved years later, when he purchased the ski area from Allred in 2000. Like Allred, Morita fell in love with our little corner of the Big Blue Marble, a place defined by unparalleled beauty, a rich history, and the warm-hearted character of its locals. Their idea was to help support and sustain Telluride's defining qualities through a nonprofit foundation dedicated to supporting the community and community groups through grants, capacity building, and other initiatives. After approaching a group of close friends and partners (and countless rounds of golf), Allred obtained a commitment from 13 people to contribute $100,000 each. The Telluride Foundation was born. Since its inception, a goal of the Foundation, put simply and elegantly, is to "make a positive difference in people’s lives – and to make more possible." Telluride Venture Accelerator was founded by entrepreneur and philanthropist Jesse Johnson and Major, who established the program to further innovation and entrepreneurship for young, high-growth business ventures nationwide, a flash of inspiration with numerous positive ripple effects on Telluride's lifestyle and marketing. According to Paul Major, economic growth in rural communities tends to be driven by some combination of six variables, three of which, resource extraction, agriculture, and small manufacturing, do not apply to Telluride today. The other three do: tourism, bedroom community/second home – and entrepreneurship. "Nationwide, entrepreneurship is a growth industry in rural, isolated places like ours, but these areas have to be intentional about supporting new business growth," Major explained. "The idea of venture philanthropy or social entrepreneurship, market-based solutions versus straight charity, had been blowing in the wind for several years when Jesse approached me. And the timing was right. Inside the Foundation, we had been asking ourselves how we could help leverage Telluride's natural beauty and isolation towards a more sustainable future. Telluride has several major factors going for it that would support entrepreneurship, among them, the highest per capita investor community in the country, a large brain trust, and a pool of private equity." What is TVA's ultimate goal, its Holy Grail? Ushering in yet another period of innovation and reinvention in the region that would help to ensure Telluride’s ongoing prosperity through this business competition for entrepreneurs from all over the world, mentoring, business coaching, and incubation, as well as investment opportunities. And for the businesses that get jump-started in the region to remain in the region, creating new job opportunities. In other words, what happens in Telluride would stay in Telluride and that would be a good thing.
According to Major, from the get-go, the Foundation's board and its donors have demonstrated a very high risk tolerance. And the non-profit's donor-centric focus has always been on leveraging donors’ gifts and maximizing the impact of those gifts to “improve the quality of life for residents, guests, and the workforce of Telluride.” Whatever that takes. Supporting TVA, the board still sees major bangs for their bucks, including the enhanced branding that comes from happy entrepreneurs going back out into the world high on their experiences in the region. Hard to buy that sort of advertising. Or how about the fact Foundation staffer Thyra Busch is hard at work developing TVA-related programs for the R-1 school district and the community. "We want to encourage entrepreneurship in our school system. And while we hope our graduates aspire to higher education, it is important to remember four tech giants – Michael Dell, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Larry Ellison – never graduated from college," added Major. The tellurideXxchange is another outgrowth of TVA. The Xchange is a way for local entrepreneurs to meet like-minded people and be exposed (through talks and gatherings) to the top-notch team of mentors Johnson and Major put together from Telluride's exceptional network, among them: • Jerry Colonna (professional coach; past partner, JP Morgan Partners): Colonna has deep experience in venture capital investing, entrepreneurialism and business coaching. He was a partner with both JP Morgan Partners, their private equity arm, and Flatiron Partners, one of the most successful early stage investment funds ever. • Richard Cornelius (retired partner, Accenture) • Ken Gart (partner, The Gart Companies) • Hass Hassan (founder & CEO, Alfalfa’s Market; board member, Whole Foods) • Todd Herrick (entrepreneur; owner, Highlands Resorts): Herrick owns and manages Highlands Resorts, Telluride’s heliskiing operator Helitrax and Black Canyon Anglers and is the managing partner of the Peaks Hotel. • Eli Halliwell (former CEO, Jurlique; analyst, DE Shaw): Halliwell has founded several businesses, was the CEO of Jurlique (organic skin care), and is now an analyst in consumer products for the hedge fund, DE Shaw. • Craig Howe (founder, Rocket XL): Howe has over 20 years of core entertainment, digital, and brand marketing experience. He founded Rocket XL, a leading social media agency (LA) with clients such as Unilever, InBev, Lexus, NFL, LinkedIn, Kraft/Cadbury, and the United Nations. • DJ Jenson (private equity, North Castle Partners; outdoor industry expert): Jenson has 25+ years of leadership experience in global consumer products with extensive time in both the action sports and outdoor segments. Throughout his career, he has worked to build and grow market-leading global brands including Timberland, Burton Snowboards, Timbuk2, and Black Diamond Equipment.

She was President of Hotels. com (sold to Barry Diller’s IAC), founder & CEO of TicketsNow (sold to IAC). • John Shields (entrepreneur, Grocery and Specialty retailing, Natural Foods): Shields is a well- recognized expert in natural products retailing. From 1983 to 1993, he was COO and then CEO of First National Supermarkets, Inc., with 135 stores and annual sales of $2.1B. Shields spent 12 years on the boards of Alfalfa’s and Wild Oats Markets, where he was Chairman of the Board from 1997 to 2002 • Rob Solomon (former president & COO, Groupon) • Peter Wheelan (former COO & CRO, Blurb.com): Wheelan has been an executive in the travel and publishing industries for nearly fifteen years. TVA would be an annual competition among talented entrepreneurs with high-growth business ideas. Four finalists would be selected to receive $30,000 to catalyze their business forward. Finalists would be required to relocate to Telluride for at least six months, where they would be provided shared office space and mentors to cultivate and support their new business endeavors. TVA would uniquely tap Telluride’s growing community of successful entrepreneurs and investors, many of whom demonstrated an eagerness to focus their skills in the service of Telluride, but lacked, until now, a compelling vehicle.

Led by founder Mike St. Pierre, HMG sets itself apart from industry traditions with its minimalist and simple design approach, proclaiming the belief that it is only necessary to carry weight that serves a functional and necessary purpose.
“TVA seeks to be a catalyst for the sustainable growth and diversification of the Telluride regional economy," said Johnson in his initial announcement, “TVA will invest in innovative enterprises with the aim of building and strengthening the entrepreneurial community in the Telluride area. It will start small but, if successful, TVA has the potential to create a selfsustaining entrepreneurial ecosystem bringing innovation, jobs, ideas, and a renewed dynamism to the region.” The final picks were made early in the New Year from a field of 100 companies representing 10 different countries by a reviewing group that included dozens of leading entrepreneurs: board members from Whole Foods and Patagonia; the former CEO of Hotels.com; the founder of IZZE Beverages; the former head of marketing for Burton Snowboards; the former head of marketing for Black Diamond Equipment, Ltd.; and Wheelan, who also served as an entrepreneur-in-residence. And the envelope please.
Hoggle Goggle, High Desert Farms, Globa.li and Hyperlite Mountain Gear all have the potential to make positive differences in people’s lives, Sir Richard Branson’s measure of success – and the Telluride Foundation's reason for being. "The relationship between the Telluride Foundation and Telluride Venture Accelerator appears to be unique in the country. It is the first time a charitable foundation has put donor dollars into a business accelerator," concluded Major.
THE WINNERS OF THE INAUGURAL/2013 TVA ADVENTURE ARE AS FOLLOWS: Globa.li, based in Denver, is launching a cloud-based software platform that enables hotels to better manage their business and increase occupancy by aggregating room inventory and making itself available for online bookings. Globa.

Started in 1979, Mountainfilm in Telluride is one of America’s longest-running film festivals. Through the years, the festival has always been best described by one unchanging word: inspiring. In addition to screening leading independent documentary films from around the world, the festival includes a full-day symposium on a critical contemporary issue, art and photography exhibits, early morning coffee talks, a book signing party, an ice cream social, student programs and a closing picnic/awards ceremony. Presentations and panels throughout the Memorial Day weekend event include guests ranging from artists to adventurers and academics to activists.
Jazz aficionados world-wide are hip to this unique festival where musicians perform and mingle with all who come to celebrate the music: from daytime shows surrounded by the magnificent peaks of the San Juan mountains, to the afterdark crawl through Main Street Victorian saloons and concert halls. Since 1977, the Telluride Jazz Festival has brought superb music and an intimate format together to create a truly unique weekend experience each August. This event is in fact, a “Celebration” of the art, soul, history, and future of an all-American art form. This Celebration remains tops in jazz, intimacy, and ambiance.

OUTSIDE AREAS
Resplendent with unique charm and character, the outlying communities that make up the Telluride region have a personality all their own. These amiable towns offer an alternative to the hustle and bustle of Telluride. While the communities of Dolores, Rico, Placerville, Norwood, Ridgway, and Ouray present more budget friendly real estate options than Telluride – they still feature beautiful mountain views, convenient river access, newly constructed homes and sprawling ranches.

Annual Dollar Volume One of the biggest years in real estate activity was 2000, when there were 965 sales totaling $546.2m. However, in 2004 and again in 2005, the local real estate market set new records with 855 and 883 transactions totaling $617m and $724.5m, respectively. In 2006, the market recorded an overall decline in dollar volume and number of sales for all of San Miguel County, although sales within the Town of Telluride increased in both dollars and numbers. 2007 marked a significant shift, recording 631 sales, the fewest number in 9 years, and $756.6m in sales, the highest dollar volume in history. By 2009, as the national economy plunged, the Telluride market reflected the trend with a 25‐year low in number of sales, and a 10‐year low in dollar volume. That trend is starting to reverse itself, as evidenced by the upbeat finale to 2012, which recorded a 16% increase in number of sales, and a huge 47% increase in dollar volume over the previous year‐end. The compound annual growth rate for the number of sales in San Miguel County over the past 5 years showed a 7% increase, while the total dollar volume for those sales experienced a compound annual growth rate of 2%. © 2103 Telluride Consulting
