Honoring BILL JENSEN Partner/CEO of Telluride Ski Resort and 2018 U.S. Ski Hall of Fame Honoree

Bill Jensen, now Partner & CEO of the Telluride Ski & Golf Resort, the “alpha” in North America, was honored in April 2019 by the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame. He was inducted into that elite snow industry fraternity as a thought-leader in the Class of 2018, which also includes Tom Sims, inventor of the “skiboard”; the late Don Henderson, a pioneer in ski-racing; Tom Kelly, the leading spokesperson for U.S. Ski & Snowboard. The athletes include Bode Miller and Andrew Weibrecht 5-time and 2-time Alpine Skiing Olympians respectively; Kristen Ulmer, considered the first female extreme skier; and Hilary Engisch-Klein, a world-dominating freestyle skier.
Since arriving on the scene in Telluride in late 2015, Bill Jensen has led the Telluride Ski & Golf team focused on the guest experience first and foremost, rather than just the bottom line. But in so doing, he has managed to both enhance the Telluride brand and increase revenues, no small sleight of hand. Today – and for five years in a row – Telluride has remained #1 on the list of the Best Resorts in North America among Conde Nast Traveler readers and, in 2019, was voted #1 by USA Today among the top 11 resorts in North America. However, Telluride is simply the last best place where Jensen’s velvet (and Midas) touch has won the day. His success story follows.
TELLURIDE, NOW AND THEN: For five years in a row, Conde Nast Traveler has picked Telluride as their #1 Ski Resort in North America. And, for the past four of those years, since 2015, Bill Jensen has been in the driver’s seat as Partner & CEO of the Telluride Ski & Golf Resort, the undisputed economic driver of the region. Under his leadership, the stars aligned and Telluride has received a whole lot of love from the likes of Town & Country, Forbes, W, Vogue, Conde Nast, Town & Country, Architectural Digest and USA Today to name just a few highprofile glossies singing hosannas to the region’s much vaunted rustic charm, breathtaking scenery and quirky vibe. Everyone of them has sent a message out to the world that Telluride just might be America’s coolest ski resort. But that is now. What about then? Once upon a time, Telluride was just a dot on the map, a tiny mountain
town inside a box canyon tricked out in Victorian threads that could barely conceal the heart of whore and the reputation of a scammer, from bankers (and bank robbers) to gamblers and the man (or miner) on the street, who all kept steady company with the hookers, hippies and Bible pounders.
Telluride Arts helped to engender the town’s three oldest festivals: Film, Bluegrass and Chamber Music. Then, in 1977, a visionary named Ron Allred wheeled his way into town for the first time and fell head over heels. (Heard that one before?)
Then, as now, Telluride was an extreme place for extreme personalities left over, like tailings, from an era when mostly European immigrants tried to stake out a golden future in the 350 miles of tunnels they dug deep into the belly of the San Juans. Once the lifts were put in place, however, Telluride began to emerge from that wild and woolly reality of yore to become a light, bright place of snowy peaks and razzle-dazzle evening skies: a ski resort by winter; blockbuster festivals every summer; and a thriving cultural economy throughout the year, not to mention great watering holes and shops. (But no chains, amen.) All the while largely remaining true to its frontier roots. Exactly how did that happen? In the early 1970s, a chap from Beverly Hills named Joe Zoline, an investor, rolled into Telluride and bought the land that became the mountain. But it was "Senior” William Mahoney, a miner-turned-ski area operator, who then jumped in and did the work that made the resort a physical reality. At that time, half of Main Street was boarded up and people were hightailing it out of town muttering darkly under their breath about the closing of the Idarado Mines. The historic Sheridan Opera House was a camping ground for derelicts, broken glass and dusty mattresses everywhere. But when the first lifts were put up in 1972 and Telluride’s first ski runs opened for business, the ground shifted. By 1974, the forerunner of
Allred and his friend Jim Wells had grown up in Grand Junction. The story goes that through their business, Benchmark Companies, the duo built the town of Avon just west of Vail. Once that project reached build-out, they decided to find the next great place in Colorado to keep the good times rolling. Having shopped for other locations to no avail, a blue-sky August day sealed the deal: Telluride was about to explode. By 1978, Allred and Wells purchased the Telluride Ski Area from Zoline and determined to develop their new-found property – 3.5 square miles of land on what was once sheep ranches – based on the look and feel of ski resorts in the Alps, iconic places such as Zermatt, Megeve, and Chamonix. Like the models, base camp in Mountain Village would have a pedestrian-friendly core and a business center, all surrounded by a network of winter and summer trails, walking paths, and single-family estates tucked into the landscape. The region’s transformation was officially a work-in-progress: the femme futile became a femme fatale, a great beauty tricked out in beguilingly textured contrasts: Old West vibe and understated luxury; rugged terrain and corduroy; super steep terrain and never-ever (or hardly ever) runs. Basically something for everyone, including celebrities (from big industry to Tinsel Town) after a peaceful respite, which translates to no groupies, no paparazzi, no pretense. And scenery-wise “there is no

North Americans ski town that competes. Telluride is this continent’s Chamonix…,” wrote Forbes recently. In January 2019, when USA Today named Telluride #1 in North America, it gave the destination a PAF (Pure Awesomeness Factor) of 99 (out of 100), summing up: “…all discerning travelers pan for kernels of authenticity, Telluride sits on the motherlode,” adding: “The bigger the Big Boys get, the more Telluride flies under the radar, which suits folks here fine.”
his history: arguably no one has led more major resorts to acclaim in more markets than Jensen, who has held top posts at Vail Resorts and Intrawest over a 45-year career that has included Mammoth, Sun Valley, Sunday River, Northstar, Breckenridge, Vail, Whistler, and now Telluride.
BILL JENSEN, HIS “WHY” & TELSKI: Nature and the acorn myth. Nurture or what’s tough love got to do with it.
Including Bill Jensen. Because rather than being profitfocused like the aforementioned “Big Boys,” his strong bias is and always has been to helm a resort that is all about the guest experience. The good news is that revenues seem to follow all the accolades from media, guests, even locals.
Dave McCoy and Simon Sinek. Those all are chapters – or at least major footnotes – in the Bill Jensen success story – which plays into the success (and associated windfall of kudos) of the Telluride Ski Resort. The so-called “acorn myth” is a metaphor for human nature. It suggests how each person comes into the world as a unique, formed soul or innate shape with a style that lies within from birth, ultimately shaping our destiny. This inner seed is chock full of knowledge and it knows its own reason for being, so when the shell of the “acorn” is cracked open, our natural purpose is revealed.
“While Telluride is blessed with incredible natural attributes, what truly differentiates the experience is the passion and hard work the Telluride community at large invests in the guest experience. It is the resort’s focus on our guests combined with our natural beauty, spectacular terrain and unspoiled character that creates the magic that draws everyone to the region again and again – and keeps the locals in town local,” Jensen explained.
Jensen’s acorn did not crack open until he turned 21, which is when tough love entered the picture, serving as the proverbial hammer.
That focus on excellence and cleareyed decision-making is based on what Jensen describes as his “grocery store test,” one of the yardsticks the man has used over four+ decades in the snow industry heading some of North America’s premier resorts. “Realize that every action you take with staff and your community has to pass the ‘grocery store test’ because inevitably in a mountain town, every move you make – good and bad – leads to an interaction at a local market.” The “grocery store test” was on the list of “Bill-isms” cited by U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame when it announced its Class of 2018 back in September 2018: Bill Jensen was one of eight to be inducted on April 6, 2019 in Salt Lake City Utah. Since its inception in 1905, only 433 individuals from the snow industry have made the list of inductees and the majority of them have been athletes, not business and thought leaders like Jensen. The reason for the tribute is clear to anyone who knows the man and
Bill Jensen is also past chairman of the National Ski Areas Association; a two-time recipient of the Colorado Ski Country USA Chairman’s Award; and was honored with the Ski Area Management (SAM) Industry Leadership Award in 2002. He was inducted into the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame in 2008.
Bill Jensen celebrated his 21st birthday in October 1973. At that point in his life, he had racked up a grand total of five days of skiing. In making its announcement, the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame also cited Jensen for the impressive role he has played over the years as a careershaping mentor to colleagues, many of whom went on to run their own resorts, industry leaders like Tim Silva, GM, Sun Valley; Pat Campbell, president, mountain division, Vail Resorts; Chris Jarnot, EVP, mountain division, Vail Resorts; Christian Knopp, SVP marketing, Aspen Ski Company; and Dee Byrne, director of skiing, Squaw valley. Jensen’s impulse to help others help themselves and then pay that forward with more “others” is based on his firm belief: “You are only as good as the people you work with.” In addition to his most recent honor,
Young Jensen joined his parents that morning in the living room brighteyed and expecting some sort of wonderful birthday tribute. What happened next, however, did not come wrapped in a pretty bow. After a big “congratulations son,” Jensen’s dad told him it was time to move out. "Huh?" “We are giving you 30 days.” And almost one month later to the day, that Thanksgiving, Jensen headed for Mammoth with five friends. “We were six guys in one motel room.” However, Jensen was not just there to party. He was a man on a mission – on his way

to his destiny.
JENSEN HITS THE SLOPES: Before heading to Mammoth, one day the newly minted 21-year-old found himself strolling along Ventura Boulevard when he came upon the Sport Ltd. ski shop and saw a K2 Performers video playing on an endless loop in the storefront window. It was a white light moment of sorts. With his parent’s deadline looming large, no prospects and no place to live, he went after and got his very first job in the ski industry: over the winter season of 1973/1974, Bill Jensen became a “liftie.” Then Lady Luck made her first appearance on the scene. One thing Jensen had learned from a series of summer college jobs was how to pour concrete – and Mammoth was in the process of building out a new maintenance garage. Presto chango, a winter job rolls on into summer: “I worked seven days a week on a building that would ultimately be larger than a football field. As a reward, my boss told me he was going to promote me to lift supervisor. After only 10 months in Mammoth, I would be involved in training, payroll, scheduling and more. As a plus, over the next three seasons, I also got to ski more than 200 days.” Jensen’s career was off and running under the tutelage of the legendary Dave McCoy, founder of Mammoth Mountain. For the record, McCoy is now 103+ and still going strong, pursuing his hobby of taking photographs of the wildflowers, mountains, rocks and trees that surround his home in the Eastern Sierra. But back when it all began for Jensen, McCoy was The Man, known to be an operational genius and a creative force, who set a whole new standard for the ski industry, putting purpose and people over profit. Sound familiar? After four years at Mammoth, followed by two years as a lift manager at Sun Valley, then two more years overseeing the construction of a new resort, Ski Bluewood in Southeastern Washington, Jensen made a decision that would set the foundation for the rest of his illustrious career: he would hone whatever skills he would need to
run a resort by age 40. As North American sales manager, then VP, of Pisten Bully Tracked Vehicles (1981-1989), Jensen developed his business acumen and his sales and marketing chops, while increasing the company’s market share from zip to Top Dog. And, at virtually all of the North American resorts he regularly visited on his rounds for Pisten Bully, industry leaders would set aside time to talk with Jensen about how to optimize operations. It was a no-holds-barred immersion into resort opportunities and challenges from coast to coast and he metabolized it all. Bill Jensen was well on his way to executing his “Why.”
RACKING UP SUCCESSES BY FOLLOWING HIS “WHY”: Drumroll now for another man who introduced the concept to Jensen, Simon Sinek, author of “Find Your Why” and “Start with Why” and a world-renowned TED talker. On the subject of finding your “Why” Sinek once stated: “…for those who hold a leadership position, creating an environment in which the people in your charge feel like they are a part of something bigger than themselves is your responsibility as a leader. For those who work for an organization that does not leave you feeling inspired at the beginning and end of every day, you must become the leader you wish you had. Regardless of our rank in the organization, every single one of us has at least one colleague, client or vendor for whom we can take some responsibility for how they feel when they work with
us. The goal is not to focus on what’s standing in your way; it is to take steps that will have a positive and lasting effect on everyone around us…” Since unwrapping the gift of the “Why,” the notion has remained a major driver throughout Jensen’s professional life and a key component of his management style. Simply put, your “Why” is the purpose, cause or belief that drives you. Discovered around age 24, Jensen’s “Why,” was to spend a career in the snow industry as a thought leader. Having realized what would have to be described as his fate, his “Why” then evolved into helping other talented individuals grow to achieve personal and professional success too. A rising tide lifts all boats… In 1989, fortune smiled once again on Jensen’s life: a chance meeting that year with Les Otten led the enterprising young executive to Sunday River in Maine, at the time among the most dynamic resort workplaces in the country. As VP of marketing, Jensen saw Sunday River’s skier visits double over three seasons. Then, after three years in New England, at long last he would finally realize the goal he had set for himself just a few years earlier: Bill Jensen joined the publicly traded Fibreboard Corporation in 1991 as president and GM of its Northstar Resort in Lake Tahoe. There once again he managed to pull a rabbit out of a hat, several actually, increasing skier visits by 120 percent over three seasons, acquiring Sierraat-Tahoe and Bear Mountain and assuming leadership of the combined

group. At the time, he was 39-years-old. Then it was on to even greener (snowcovered) pastures.
earn a #1 ranking from SKI Magazine. Under Jensen’s leadership, from 2000 – 2012, Vail and Whistler between them achieved a #1 ranking nine times. Are we seeing a trend here?
In 1997, Jensen left Fibreboard and moved on to Breckenridge to serve as its COO not long after Vail Resorts acquired the mountain. At the company’s headquarters just over the pass, the powers-that-be took notice when Breck’s business went through the roof, increasing by 22 percent over two seasons and eclipsing Vail’s skier visits for the first time ever. No big surprise, Bill Jensen was soon promoted again, this time to the position of COO of Vail, where he saw skier visits increased 25 percent and the resort returning to its #1 ranking in the annual SKI Magazine Reader Resort Survey. In 2006, Jensen went on to lead Vail Resorts’ mountain division, with oversight of Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Heavenly. In 2008, Intrawest recruited Jensen to become its CEO. At the time, the company was North America’s second largest ski and resort real estate development company, with 12 resorts and seven million skier visits under its umbrella. That same year, as stated above, Jensen was inducted into the Colorado Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame. “I looked around the room and found my mom who, when I was 24, had told me I need to get a ‘real job.’ I said it’s okay mom; I have a real job.” In 2010, Intrawest’s flagship resort, Whistler Blackcomb, would successfully host the Winter Olympics and also

However, as it turned out, the Great Recession of 2008 had decimated Intrawest’s real estate development business, resulting in the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars of annual revenue. But when the going gets tough… Jensen faced the challenge head on (of course), persevered and achieved a successful NYSE IPO in 2014. Which brings us to Telluride where, in December 2015, Chuck Horning, Majority Owner of the Telluride Ski & Golf Resort, announced that Jensen would become Partner & CEO, the end result of a chance encounter in 2004, when Jensen handed Horning, then an industry newbie, his card. It was one of the smartest moves Horning ever made. Jensen was on fire. At the time Horning said: “This is a significant step towards bringing Telluride to its potential. Bill and I have been friends for many years. Having Bill as a partner brings depth to the ownership of this resort and our shared interest in bringing together community and resort sustainability with a long-term vision is the core purpose for our partnership. Telluride is a relatively young resort with a huge potential.” And Jensen added: “I chose to come to Telluride because of the opportunity to invest in the future of this extraordinary resort.

Though the mandate to be experience-driven in Telluride marks a major shift from the priorities he was handed in places like Breck, Vail and Intrawest, where Mammon reigned supreme, his talent for finding revenue under rocks never left him.
TELSKI TODAY: Telski is shorthand for a variety of businesses that include skiing and boarding and the ancillary enterprises associated with the sports such as ski school, on-mountain restaurants, etc. Collectively they represent about 70 percent of the resort’s revenues today. In addition, hospitality in the form of two hotels, the award-winning Inn at Lost Creek and The Peaks and their restaurants, plus base-area restaurants such as The Pick, Tomboy Tavern, Crazy Elk and Allred’s, trade association and communal real estate holdings also fall under the Telski umbrella. Into the mix, add TSG’s plans for improvements. Near-term winter enhancements include glading on Chair 9 to expand

Today, ask anyone on the team at Telluride Ski & Golf how they feel and they will almost certainly tell you how proud they are of their work, how they are valued and are comfortable expressing themselves – for better or for worse.

TSG along with The Town of Mountain Village Homeowners Association (TMVOA) and the Town of Mountain Village together are targeting on a new five-star branded hotel property in Mountain Village, as well as expanded parking and affordable housing.
However, since he grabbing the reins, the news in Telluride has mostly been good.
Overall, in the Telluride region, Telski or TSG is the 800-pound gorilla, the undisputed economic mover-andshaker four months a year. And with an annual payroll in excess of $30+ million, it is the sine qua non the other eight months of the year.
“The fact revenues have increased annually means good things continue to happen – such as our ability to support our employees and the greater Telluride community, while enhancing the visitor experience.” The Epic Pass alliance is a contributing factor in the uptick as it targets Telluride’s best customers, destination skiers, people of means who travel for the sport to ski destinations like
Utah, Canada and Colorado – and specifically our mountain community. "Those travelers support our mountain and our destination, spending about $500 a day per person. That adds up. With the alliance, we have been able to boost revenue without increasing volume (read “‘skier visits’). That said, we are also very proud of spearheading a shift in the resort culture that has left is its wake a renewed sense of dedication and commitment to further elevate what we all do.” Jensen’s personal goal has always been and remains 1 + 1 = 3 outcomes. He sees them as the key differentiators of success. “Clearly I have been very lucky to work with a great team of talented individuals. And our shared end goal remains simple: Be the best. Eyes on that prize.” Game on.

TSRC. The acronym stands for the “Telluride Science Research Center” or “Telluride Science” for short, a nonprofit which for years has largely flown under the radar – despite its colorful history; loud applause from its members, some of the most distinguished scientists in the world; its sizable contribution to the region’s economy; not to mention the popular Town Talks it hosts every summer. While other nonprofits in the region tend to compete for attention like rugs in an Arab souk, TSRC has quietly gone about its business with the ALL CAPS goal of setting “powerful new directions in science that lead from molecular insights to far-reaching solutions.” No small potatoes. However, when TSRC takes over its new digs in Telluride’s historic Depot Building – now the home of Telluride’s Ah Haa School for the Arts until its new home is completed in 2020 – TSRC’s off-piste image will change and, with that, the
algorithms of its everyday life. At long last with a home of its own at The Depot, TSRC becomes one more loudly touted reason why – along with Telski and The Mountain itself, our cultural economy with the summer festivals – our mountain resort keeps summiting in the media, which consistently describes Telluride as #1, the “alpha” and “a perfect gem” among all the resorts in North America. "Merely speaking as a community member, I want the Telluride brand to be about where the smartest people in the world come to find solutions to society’s most pressing challenges,” Mark Kozak, TSRC Executive Director. “And because TSRC has, over the years, been the single biggest renter of The Depot and because scientists have said they are always stimulated by the building’s historic character, acquiring The Depot makes sense and is a perfect fit for our nonprofit.”

TSRC, A BRIEF HISTORY: Quickly, what comes to mind when we say “1984.” Yes, The Book. “Nineteen Eighty-Four,” (often published as “1984”), is the iconic dystopian novel by English writer George Orwell set in the year 1984 when most of the world population have become victims of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance and propaganda. Umm…No comment. Or too many. Some would argue that the launch of “Miami Vice” alone is enough to claim 1984 as the height of the Eighties. But then Apple released its first Macintosh that year and, with Reagan re-elected, the Space Shuttled Discovery took off on its maiden voyage. Prince Harry and Scarlett Johansson were also born in 1984. And so was TSRC. Baby TSRC came into the world with just one workshop and 18 scientists under the auspices of Wendy Brooks and the Telluride Academy.
chemistry professor, and Peter Salamon, San Diego State University mathematics professor, found our remote San Juan Mountains inspirational. They launched TSRC to bring together international scientists to debate, discuss, and discover new directions for scientific research in an intimate setting. Early workshops focused on thermodynamics, chaos theory, clusters, spectroscopy, and intermolecular dynamics. Informality and candidness were the organizing principles of TSRC. Initially, TSRC participants focused on theoretical science, laying the groundwork for much of today's applied science. Multidisciplinary meetings with open communication between junior and senior scientists were key to moving science forward, everyone united in the thought: what better place to do what we do than Telluride? "The actual origin of the idea of TSRC dates back to 1983, when we'd had a very successful workshop at the Aspen Center for Physics on Finite Time Thermodynamics. It was so successful that some people wanted to have another in 1984. We'd had one in 1981 in Aspen, I believe, and we could have had one in 1985, but, if my memory holds, we couldn't get a slot at the Aspen Center for Physics for 1984. At least we couldn't get one at a time when people could come. Then Peter Salamon said this, or something close to it, 'We both know Telluride and like it. Why don't we try to have a workshop there?' I thought that was a brilliant idea….,” explained Berry.

TSRC is unique and different from any other conferences and workshops,” Hongfei Wang, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. TSRC is now under contract to purchase the historic Telluride Depot. The acquisition, restoration, and renovation will provide a permanent, year-round home for the nonprofit. That allows for an expansion of TSRC’s programming while preserving a beloved, historic structure as an accessible public asset for the Telluride community.
TSRC NOW & THE DEPOT PROJECT: Today, working to progress biomedical, material, energy, water, computing, atmospheric, and fundamental sciences, TSRC hosts over 50 meetings a year. TSRC’s network of 5,000 participating scientists come from over 700 international and domestic institutions from 92 different countries. Scientific and technological developments seeded at TSRC find roots around the globe. “I cannot think of a better atmosphere for running a scientific meeting or a better setting for inducing productive collaborations,” said Arieh Warshel, 2013 Nobel Laureate, USC. “Over three decades the Telluride Science Research Center developed a unique environment that allows scientists to see the larger picture and to tackle big, cross-cutting problems. TSRC’s success comes from nurturing a research atmosphere that encourages collaboration, teamwork, and open minds. In this way, TSRC dedicates itself to addressing today’s complex problems and to stimulating the scientific and engineering breakthroughs needed for both progress and a sustainable future,” said James Crutchfield, University
To date, classes and talks have been held in classrooms in Telluride schools – the nonprofit plans to significantly increase and further diversify its programming at its new digs and first permanent home. And, with a space redesigned with the public in mind, the community will be able to enjoy some of the talks, weekend seminars and oneon-one interactions with the scientists themselves. Protected from private development, The Depot will also continue to be available for community programming, nonprofit events, and event rentals not related to TSRC’s regular activities. What’s more, with an increase in programming and rental opportunities inside the overhauled space, TSRC anticipates it will be able to enhance Telluride’s coffers from an impressive $12M to an even more impressive $18 annually. “TSRC is wonderful.
