BODA BODA BAN
A call to the importance of public participation.
The recent call to ban boda bodas has raised concerns about the importance of public participation in decision-making processes. As a resident of Milimani, I spoke with several boda boda operators in the area and was surprised to learn that most of them were unaware of the ban.

It is crucial to consider the possible consequences of the ban and explore alternative solutions through dialogue The hospitality sector in Milimani has a significant impact on the economy, with numerous independent family-run establishments contributing to the government's revenue through various permits and licenses. These establishments also inject foreign capital into the local economy, and many of them rely on boda bodas to transport their guests to other recreational and entertainment facilities in Kisumu.
While the county government has good intentions to replace boda bodas with online ride-hailing services, it is essential to assess whether this model is feasible. Currently, there are only a few ridehailing services operating in Kisumu that one would confidently recommend to family and friends. Additionally, the ride-hailing model may not fit the needs of boda bodas, as it requires significant investment in intangible assets that may not yield returns
Moreover, boda bodas typically have a daily quota to meet to pay for their motorcycles, and they may not be willing to give away 15% of their gross to an online company for a service that they can handle through good positioning. Positioning away from customer base may also result in increased fuel costs for boda bodas, which could be passed on to the user, ultimately impacting the hospitality sector's growth.
If the ban is deemed necessary, it is crucial to enhance non-motorized transportation facilities such as footpaths and pedestrian crossings. For instance, Awuor Otieno Rd, which has the highest foot traffic in Milimani, lacks a footpath, and some hedges and bushes are overgrown providing good hiding spots for potential criminals. Addressing such issues can contribute to improving security within and outside Milimani.
It is vital to engage all stakeholders in a constructive dialogue to find a sustainable solution that benefits everyone in the community Security remains an issue within and outside Milimani, coordinated efforts are needed to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all residents within Kisumu County #KisumuMyPride
