E L’ULTIMO VIAGGIO (THE LAST TRAVEL)

by Irène Cohen-Janca illustrations Maurizio A.C. Quarello for children 8 years and older pp. 64 | cm. 20 x 30 january 2015 Original text: French English world, French, German and Korean rights sold

November 20th, 1940. As a circus parade, waving the flag of the children republic, 160 little Jews, led by doctor Korczak, are leaving their old, big and beautiful orphanage for the new one, which is smaller and set on the other side of Warsaw, inside the ghetto. They have to go, a last glimpse to the windows of the house where they were happy with doctor Korczak, who taught respect and love for children to everybody. The ghetto is part of the same town, but it's also a foreign country, a prison for Jews. Day by day, new Jewish people arrive. Soon, there is no more space. Some of those people have no home. They are forced to live on the street, freezing to death. October 26th, 1941. Dr Korczak’s children are moving again to an even smaller house. They are still alive just thanks to memories of the good times when they were discovering the beauty of the world. Food is missing, warmth is missing, freedom is missing, dignity is missing. In Warsaw ghetto everything is missing. The entire world has forgotten about them. And the German soldiers won’t let Jewish children grow up: on the 4th of August 1942, there were 192 of them on the train that would carry them away. Doctor Korczak headed them, proud to be there for the travel. Their last one.

By the authors of the multi-awarded Les arbres pleurent aussi, published in nine countries, the unforgettable story of the famous educator Janusz Korczak, who wanted to share the tragic destiny of two hundred children living in his orphanage in Warsaw's ghetto.

OM C H LA PANTERA SOTTO IL LETTO RT (THE PANTHER UNDER THE BED)

by Andrea Bajani | illustrations Mara Cerri for children 5 years and older pp. 44 | cm. 21,4 x 30,8 | march 2015

Father and child in front of the night. In that mountain house, surrounded by silence, the young girl knows very well that in the dark everything will disappear. For that reason she comes to an agreement with her father: for night pees, she can keep an old pan under her bed, so she won't be swallowed by darkness. The sleep doesn't come, instead, timely, she needs to pee. Under the bed, the young girl doesn't find only the pan: a panther, black and mysterious as the night, is waiting for her. Facing the panther is almost like facing the night: both are scaring, but both can be explored. The adults believe that a bulb is enough to have back the world that has been taken by darkness, but, during that magic night, the father must agree with his child: beyond the closed door there is nothing, anymore. The young girl, however, has faced the panther and now she knows the mistery of that darkness that made the mountain disappear. Now she knows the night and it will be easy to ride it by her pan, as a surfboard on the surface of another mystery: the sea.

Lights in the night, hypnotic as panther's eyes, the brilliant images by Mara Cerri.

PER FARE IL RITRATTO DI UN PESCE (TO DRAW THE PORTRAIT OF A FISH)

by Pascale Petit | illustrations Maja Celija for children 7 years and older pp. 52 | cm. 30 x 21,2 | march 2015 Two twisted and alternated stories at the same time: one is recounted by words and pictures, one is recounted just by drawings. In the first one, the main character is a man who wants to paint a fish on his canvas. In the second story the main characters are kids who are looking for a fish, in flesh and bones. The man arrives at the seaside looking for inspiration but suddenly falls asleep and his painting begins to float above water. The kids, captured the fish, get the painting too, and start drawing a moltitude of animals. The same animals the man is dreaming of at that moment. When he wakes up, the fish, instead of being just painted, is actually in flesh and bones in the bowl, abandoned by the children already gone. A short story or a long poem by Pascale Petit, wonderful poet and surrealist storyteller. The visionary illustrations by Maja Celija insinuate into the words letting us read two different stories.

A tale where imagination and reality are perfectly blended.

PASCALE PETIT Her studies in philosophy comes out in each of her creations. Born in France in 1969 and now based in Paris, she has often travelled in Spain and in South America. A poet and theatre writer, Pascale Petit wrote also "false" fairy tales, "strange" stories, "almost" short stories, because every time she starts to imagine a text her poetic imagination snakes in it, changing the reality into a surreal world. SHE IS AUTHOR OF MORE THAN TWENTY BOOKS, she is a member of Action Poétique, and she steadly runs workshops of creative writing. Pascale Petit collaborates also with the Centre Internationale de Poésie in Marseilles and, moreover, she signs many essays for the Cahiers critique de poesie. SHE HAS PUBLISHED WITH THE MOST INTERESTING FRENCH PUBLISHERS: SEUIL, GRANDIR, ROUERGUE, SARBACANE AND L'ECOLE DES LOISIRS. From the very beginning, Pascale Petit conceived this book to have Maja Celija illustrations.

MAJA CELIJA “Maja is very able to go beyond the written text, she loves illogical combinations, visual surprises, swiching other paths and different questions on” (Walter Fochesato / Andersen). She was born in Maribor (Slovenia) in 1977. When she was five the family moved to Croatia and there she studied humanities studies. In 1995 attended an illustration course at the Istituto europeo di Design in Milan where she graduated in 1998. Four years later she was granted a diploma in Graphic design at the C.F.P. Bauer in Milan. Since then she has worked as an illustrator for several magazines and for the most interesting italian publishing houses (Orecchio acerbo, Topipittori, Donzelli). She took part to several exhibitions of illustration in Italy and abroad. In many occasions her illustrations were selected for the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition. IN 2005 SHE REPRESENTED ITALY AT THE BIENNIAL OF ILLUSTRATION BRATISLAVA (BIB). Now she is based in Pesaro.

S LA CREAZIONE (THE CREATION)

by Dino Buzzati | illustrations Gerda Märtens for all ages pp. 48 | cm. 24 x 32 | april 2015

After creating stars, galaxies and nebulae, the Almighty would have a rest, but a host of angels architects, all in agreement with each other, submit him a project ‘full of life’. Each architect is seeking for approval for his single part of the entire project: from mosses to elephants, through dragons with many tails and cats with just one, from whales and sequoias, from butterflies to flies, each project is approved. At the end of the evening another angel comes whit his project rolled up under his arm, shows it to the Creator and the Almighty sees the man and the woman… Shape and characteristics do not convince the Creator: this is is the only project that He rejects. All the others architects get to work: the world takes shape and begins to come to life; just the boring angel is upset. But the Almighty and Omniscient is also kind, very very kind and, maybe for exhaustion, at the very end signs the latter project. The rest is history.

The genesis of the world and the most disturbing of all creatures…

DINO BUZZATI "Storytellers as Dino Buzzati, who is an adult/child or a child/adult, are our best life companions". With these words Ermanno Olmi would define the striking skills of this writer. He allows us to understand reality by the fairy tale. Buzzati was always chasing reality as reporter and correspondent to the “Corriere della Sera” and as playwright. In 1958 he won the Strega Award with "Sessanta racconti". His most famous novels are “Un amore”, “Il deserto dei Tartari” e “Il segreto del bosco vecchio”. “La famosa invasione degli orsi in Sicilia” illustrated by himself was published for the first time on “Corriere dei piccoli”, a weekly publication for children. His surrealistic style belongs to fantasy, with affinities with horror and science fiction. HE IS CONSIDERED A MASTER OF SHORT STORIES.

GERDA MÄRTENS This very young illustrator, comes from the Baltic region. She was born in Tallinn in 1987. In the same city she attended the Estonian Academy of Art. Once graduated, she moved to Marche (Italy). There she studied illustration at the Academy of Fine arts in Macerata with Mauro Evangelista. At this Academy, studying art in depth and improving her competence, she had the opportunity to attend special courses WITH DAVIDE CALÌ AND CARL CNEUT. Except for the artistic direction of an animated film, "In the air”, awarded in Estonia, Australia and Norway, "The creation" is her first illustrated book which brought luck to Gerda Märtens because she's currently working on several interesting children books projects.

E LE CASE DEGLI ALTRI BAMBINI (THE HOUSES OF OTHER KIDS)

by Luca Tortolini illustrations Claudia Palmarucci for children 6 years and older pp. 48 | cm. 24 x 34 august 2015

Ten kids and ten different ways of living in a house. Ten short stories telling different childhoods, portraited beyond windows, walls and doors. Small houses, or enormous ones, full of people or full of things, houses looking like stables made of wood and tin. Silent houses or full of music ones. Houses where you can just imagine the movie, although they are built exactly over the movie theatre. Houses having a precise smell. Houses which are not hotels and houses which are hotels. Houses that really exist and houses that it would be nice if they existed. In each one there is someone acting and moving: fat, happy, sad and foreign relatives (perhaps too many). House for kids means something like 'shell', not always comfortable. Inside, kid are looking for their own dimension. Each house, as much as each kid, is a whole other story. And at the end there is the eleventh house: Claudia's one. With wooden floor, it's plenty of pastels, paintbrushes, and sheet of papers everywhere. Claudia, once grown up, will use them to create and paint stories with 'other kids'.

T IL MARE NEL DESERTO (THE SEA IN THE DESERT)

by Silvia Paradisi illustrations Leticia Ruifernรกndez for children 4 years and older pp. 32 | cm. 27 x 30,8 open: cm 27 x 61,6 june 2015

In that yellow sea there is a blue spot: an oasis in the desert. A small pool of water and the nearby palm tree are arguing: the puddle believes she is a sea and complains because she is in the wrong place, but the palm tree, that thinks he is wise, tries unsuccessfully to make her change her mind. Far away from there, a widow lives with her daughter. While the oasis and the palm tree keep on discussing about the significance of being a sea, mother and girl decide to leave the town and to go back to the native village. In the desert their destinies, the one of the pool and the one of the girl, will meet. Could few shells come out of the pocket, two faithful seagulls and a young girl swimming change the puddle into a sea, as the old and wide palm tree maintains? Or rather is the acknowledgement of itself that makes the oasis a sea in the desert?

A story about identity seeking, matched by the wonderful watercolors of Leticia Ruifernรกndez.

IL CANE E LA LUNA

(THE DOG AND THE MOON)

by Alice Barberini for children 3 years and older pp. 84 | cm. 20 x 28 | october 2015

A little dog working in a circus has fallen in love with a paper moon hanging down the big top. It’s a complicated love story. The paper moon is old and broken and it’s ready to be thrown away. The dog escapes from the circus with the moon in its cart, but once in the big city, Paris, it experiences loneliness, hunger and cold, until a young boy picks the dog up. But also for the moon who was left alone on the pavement, there is a place in the world: it is 1902 and that elegant man who picks it up is Georges Méliès. The poster of “Le Voyage dans la lune” will make it famous forever.

A romantic story set at the time of silent films: few words, few colours, and a lot of marvel.
