Kieran Hanrahan Artistic Director

TradFest has grown exponentially over eight years and is now a firm fixture on the Irish Festival calendar. I am extremely proud of our achievement as the 2012 Festival was attended by over 44,000 people and I know we’ll see an increase this year. Last year, we hosted visitors from all over Europe and we look forward to welcoming them back in 2013 with artists from the US, United Kingdom, Latvia, Poland, Lithuania, Spain and Canada. The Festival presents the best in Irish musical talent and again we’ve assembled a lineup of iconic figures in Irish traditional music and exciting new names in emerging Irish talent for amazing concerts in the city’s finest venues. Also family friendly shows are planned with many outdoor events. 2013 will be the year of the ‘Gathering’ and as TradFest is a musical gathering, we welcome back those from around the globe. TradFest 2013 will be bigger and better than ever - guaranteed!

I am privileged and honoured to be Patron of Temple Bar TradFest again. Always an ambitious and broad ranging event, TradFest cements Temple Bar’s reputation as Dublin’s cultural quarter and provides a focus for Irish traditional music nationally and internationally. The Festival serves as a marvellous beacon of positivity which lifts our spirits with its amazing array of home-grown talent. We feel proud when we listen to the wonderful musical arrangements, intimate recitals and choreographed dance in some of Dublin’s beautiful concert halls and iconic Churches and Cathedrals. I’m thrilled to promote and enjoy TradFest, celebrating the treasure that is Irish culture and our national heritage.

St. Werburgh’s Church Opposite Leo Burdoc’s

Dating back to 1178, and built shortly after the arrival of the Anglo-Normans, St Werburgh’s Church has an interesting history. Lord Edward Fitzgerald, Irish aristocrat, revolutionary and a leader of the United Irishmen, is buried in the grounds. Renowned composer and pianist John Field, (best known for originating the piano nocturne and the development of the Russian piano school) was baptized in the Church in 1782. Located close to Dublin Castle, St Weburgh’s boasts a decorated organ and Lord Lieutenants’s glided pew (c1767). In the past times it even had fire engines stored in the porch! This beautiful church is a stunning venue for some of Ireland’s most talented musicians.

T with the Maggies One of the most inspirational and heartening collaborations in traditional Irish music was the birth of T with the Maggies. Triona, Maighread, Mairead and Moya, all come from the same corner of Co. Donegal (with Gaelic as their first language) and all have illustrious career histories. Their formation was the result of an evocative performance in 2007 to celebrate the life and music of Micheal O’Domhnaill, (brother of Triona and Maighread) who, with Skara Brae and the Bothy Band were a pioneering force in Irish music. Each of these singers brings a unique and varied interpretation of their musical heritage and the end result is one of the finest amalgamations of Irish female vocals – true Celtic women!

City Hall is an outstanding example of the Georgian architecture for which Dublin is world-renowned.The building was restored to its 18th-century appearance at the beginning of the 21st century, and Dublin City Council has won awards for the conservation of this historic building. Most Dublin City Council staff are located in the relatively new and controversial Civic Offices, built from 1979 on the site of a national monument, the Viking city foundations on Wood Quay. Dublin Corporation itself was renamed in the early 21st century as Dublin City Council, previously the name of the assembly of councillors only.

St Patrick’s Cathedral Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland. From the simple beginnings of a small wooden Church built where St Patrick was purportedly baptised and converted to Christianity, it now hosts many national religious commemorations. In 1191 John Comyn raised the ancient Church to the status of Cathedral and, since the 1530’s the choral tradition of Anglican worship was established and St Patrick’s is the only remaining cathedral church in Ireland with a daily pattern of sung services. How fitting then, that this magnificent Cathedral, at the heart of Ireland’s history and culture for over 800 years, will serve as venue for superb concerts throughout TradFest 2013.

Téada with Seamus Begley, Perfect Friction, Aiofe Scott and Trad for Trocaire winner Truancy Téada, now firmly established as one of Irish music’s leading exponents on the international world music stage, continues to be driven by a fascination with the timeless, expressive force of traditional tunes inherited from previous generations of musicians. Since 2001, when Teada, the freshly-formed band, landed a spot on the innovative Irish television show Flosc it has evolved to frequent headline performances at major music festivals throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Israel and Australia. A notable highlight was a headlining appearance to a 30,000-audience in Brittany during 2006, a year which also saw the band launch a hugely successful CD/DVD ‘Inné Amárach’, released by Gael Linn and Compass Records. With lush Irish orchestration, Téada, meaning “strings” in the Irish language revels in the vibrant traditional music of Ireland, deftly playing up its structural intricacies while preserving the timeless energy of the reels, jigs, hornpipes, and other lesser-known tunes in the repertoire.
