It has been a great privilege of mine to be the Patron of Temple Bar TradFest for the past number of years. The festival has grown to become one of the biggest festivals celebrating our traditional music and culture in Dublin. Now in its 9th year Temple Bar TradFest features both national and internationally renowned artists in some of Dublin’s most iconic heritage buildings. As well as a fantastic programme of musical concerts the festival has a huge array of activities and events catering for all ages and tastes. From film screenings and theatre, to street performances, ceili workshops, marching pipe bands, amazing outdoor concerts featuring some of Irelands leading new musicians and craft markets. It promises to be a wonderful 5 days of music, culture and craic. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Nuada Nuada - Siansa Gael Linn 2013 Winners

Hailing from Gaeltacht na nDéise, Co. Waterford, Nuada won Siansa Gael Linn 2013, the most prestigious award for young traditional music groups. All but one of the musicians are under 17 years of age, while the youngest member of the group is only 13!
Nuada, comprising Pax Ó Faoláin, Cárthach Ó Faoláin, Macdara Ó Faoláin, Aoife Nic Giolla Pádraig, Rebecca Saich and Caoimhín Ó Cionnfhaolaidh, look forward to presenting a vibrant selection of traditional music and song at this showcase concert.
Their repertoire includes songs from the Déise and old and new tunes from local musicians who have influenced them over the years such as Caoimhín and Seán Ó Fearghaíl, Ciarán Ó Gealbháin, Danú, Nioclás Tóibín, Áine Uí Cheallaigh and Bobby Gardiner, to name but a few. They maintain a strong loyalty to the pureness of traditional Irish music and attempt to keep that at the core of their

ChildVision Petting Farm
ChildVision is always alive with birdsong and the scents of grass and flowers.
ChildVision, Ireland’s Education Centre for Blind Children, are packing up their cuddly and friendliest pets from their petting farm and bringing them into Temple Bar for TradFest.
Visit them at Temple Bar this January and learn about the birthday parties and school tours you can have at ChildVision. The farm is on Gracepark Road and open to the public 7 days a week with no admission charge.
These animals play a very special role at ChildVision, helping the blind and multi-disabled children who attend school there to feel their cuddly, furry, friendly shapes. The little horses spend their days helping the children who aren’t able to move very well on their own to sit up and feel ten feet tall as they explore the sensory trail. ChildVision’s patiently friendly ponies, rabbits, sheep Elvis and Seamus and micro pigs Podge and Rodge show children the joy of being with animals. The garden at

Experience Gaelic Games A Celebration of our National Sports Come along and test your skills at the Experience Gaelic Games Skills test. Our indigenous Gaelic Games are uniquely Irish. The games include Gaelic Football played with a ball like a soccer ball but from the hand, and Hurling, our native stick and ball game. These games are remarkably popular in Ireland and so much so that every year the biggest games attract crowds of over 80,000 spectators. At Temple Bar TradFest 2014 you’ll have a chance to test your skills with a Gaelic Football and Hurling Shooting challenge- It’s suitable for all ages – come along and enjoy – we look forward to seeing you !

Clayotic Workshop An exciting workshop for children using Clayotic, a new type of modelling clay. This soft and pliable modelling clay is fun to squeeze, shape and mould and it has also been proved to be extremely therapeutic to use. The workshops will last for 1 hour; each participating child will make their own unique model inspired by a traditional Irish theme. The Clayotic model will be a permanent keepsake of your time at Temple Bar TradFest. This workshop promises to be loads of fun.

Limerick City Pipe Band
The City of Limerick Pipe Band are a popular pipe band who are are welcomed all over the country and indeed, the world. The City of Limerick Pipe Band was formed way back in 1949. The band has always been the city’s top ranking pipe band and a great institution of education for young pipers and drummers. The band is the chief pipe band to renowned Irish group The Chieftains and has appeared on stage with them all over the country. Pipe Major Philip Doran and lead drummer Matthew A Ring are the musical directors and will lead the band during their performance at this year’s Temple Bar TradFest.

Temple Bar will be ‘up-cycled’ into an urban street farm, with on-street pallet seating, up-cycled waste stream materials turning Temple Bar into an intensive urban street farm, sourcing materials for mushroom growing, fish farming and potato planting from all around the local area. The Urban Farm will showcase innovative ways to grow food in an urban area. Utilizing & Up-Cycling waste stream materials from the city to showcase simple & innovative methods. They’ll be running workshops on how to make the best use of balconies and confined spaces for growing food, demonstrations on growing mushrooms on coffee waste, aquaponic displays and advice on setting up and sourcing materials in the city for urban food growing.

Mushroom Street Farm Up-cycled waste coffee grounds from city cafes growing gourmet mushrooms. ‘With the amount of coffee consumed everyday in the city, this project really makes sense’ Collecting waste coffee grounds from cafes, diverting them from landfill and up-cycling them into a substrate for growing gourmet oyster mushrooms in the heart of city. ‘One man’s waste is another man’s gourmet mushroom!’

The Golden Era of Ceili Music & Dance 1955 - 1970

Between 1999 and 2004, in conjunction with the Irish Traditional Music Archive, Brian Lawler recorded interviews with 70 people including céilí band founders and members, promoters, dancers and radio personnel. He obtained a total of 42 hours of recorded material and has put together an insightful talk on the project which consists of a review of the work and includes short extracts from some of the interviews along with samples

In Edinburgh 2013, Fionnuala was nominated for the Amnesty International Freedom of Expression award, won a Scotsman Fringe First award, and was nominated for Best Solo Performance by The Stage. Ambrose Keogh works for Shell. When the Tunnel Boring Machine he named Fionnuala sinks into the bog in Mayo, he is magically confronted by Fionnuala, the swanchild of the ancient legend The Children of Lir. Fionnuala puts a geas (spell) on him – he’s bound to tell what he knows about potentially lethal attacks on local opponents of the Shell Mayo gas project. RIGA In 24 Hours Riga 2014 Exhibition: A 24-hour journey through Riga. The exhibition reveals the diverse architecture of Riga, its charming places and people. Every visitor to the exhibition can take a turn on the bicycle and operate the exhibition by providing it with pedal power, thereby symbolically cycling through 24 hours of various Riga scenes. An exhibition created by a new team of designers at Riga Asketic in cooperation with Tom’s Ērenpreiss, a continuator of the work of Latvian bicycle legend Gustavs Ērenpreiss.
RIGA From Above RIGA – the metropolis of the Baltics and the capital of Latvia. Riga, whose historic centre was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. Riga with its inspiring Old Town silhouette listed under the European Heritage Label scheme. This photo exhibition approaches Riga from the sky. Vast panoramas offer a clear view of Riga’s urban structure, remains of ancient fortifications and outlining the steeples of churches in the historic centre.

National Wax Museum Plus will get into the TradFest spirit with a very special children’s Céilí. Taking place in the Children’s World of Enchantment, boys & girls will get the chance to practice their Irish dancing moves. Early Years Trad Music Concert
The Secret of Kells Exhibition
Join traditional musicians Fiona Kelleher (singer) and Jim Murray (guitar) for a gentle toe-tapping performance of traditional songs and music especially for little ears to enjoy. Fiona is known as a singer and performer for young audiences and as an early years musician, and Jim has been the guitarist with Sharon Shannon’s band for many years. The performance will include songs in Irish and English.
Come and visit this exhibition of limited edition art prints of scenes from The Secret of Kells, the critically-acclaimed animated feature film by Kilkenny’s Cartoon Saloon. Nominated for an Academy award in 2010, this enchanting story of Brendan, the Vikings and the Book of Kells won millions of fans across the world. The prints are gloriously high-resolution, gallery-quality illustrations and draw heavily on the Irish medieval art that influenced the film.

Children’s Open Trad Session
Children’s Crafts Club
Presented in partnership with The Crafts Council of Ireland
Drop in to our open trad seisiún, especially for children, led by members of Ceoltóirí Chluain Tarbh a long established and highly active Irish music organisation. Children who can play a tune on the fiddle, bodhrán, harp, concertina, or any instrument at all (even non-traditional instruments) are welcome to come along and give trad music a try. Families are invited to come, watch and enjoy!
This year our Temple Bar TradFest children’s crafts club will take inspiration from The Battle of Clontarf and the Book of Kells. Travel back in time and try your hand at crafting a mini metal shield, make your own illuminated scroll using calligraphy and print techniques or become a High King or Queen for the day by making your own crown/headpiece using a variety of materials. With craft artists Sabrina Meyns, Deirdre Rogers and Caroline Ryan.
Places will be allocated on the day based on availability. Participation is recommended for children who have been learning music for one year or more. Children wishing to participate must bring their own instruments. Please note during busy periods some waiting may be required.
Free entry on a first come first served basis. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Come and celebrate 1,000 years since the Battle of Clontarf by joining a team and learning to play a simple rhythm or two on the bodhrán. Your skill of playing will become your musical weapon when we bring it all together for a giant musical battle between the two teams – who can play the loudest, fastest, best? Who can lead their team to musical victory? Everyone wins in this musical battle which promises to be an outrageously fun event at full volume. All participating adults and children require tickets. Children can be booked in individually or with an adult. No unaccompanied adults. No experience necessary. Bodhráns will be provided.
World class Irish singer Karan Casey and celebrated musician Niall Vallely (concertina and low whistle) perform a delightful selection of traditional and folk songs and tunes especially for families to enjoy. Dancer Colin Ryan opens up the world of traditional Irish dance. All teachers, including complete beginners, are invited to explore and discover simple dance steps and to build the skills and confidence to deliver creative and enjoyable Irish traditional dance programmes in the classroom. The workshop will feature approaches to delivering dance elements of the Primary School Physical Education curriculum as well as looking at Irish traditional dance in an historical context. Please wear loose comfortable clothes and comfortable shoes.

Irish Mythic Solo Exhibition & Workshop

Irish artist Emily Dawson will hold a solo exhibition exploring themes of Irish Celtic mythology and spiritualism. To coincide with Temple Bar TradFest, she will hold a specially designed workshop with a strong basis in Irish mythology, aiming to teach you to access the subconscious when creating artwork.
Workshop will be followed by a traditional Irish music session with a modern flavour.
The Workshop will explore methods of accessing and trusting your imagination and subconscious. The results of this can then be made into artwork. Emily has been involved in activism, shamanism, druidism, healing and transcendental meditation, and will explain how all the paths we take and skills we acquire can be turned into art and poetry.
