John Sheahan was a key member of the Dubliners for almost 50 years. He is a notable Irish violinist, tin whistle player, folk musician and composer and the last surviving member of the original and definitive five member line-up of The Dubliners. Throughout his career he has been in steady demand as a studio musician, contributing to albums by artists as diverse as Kate Bush, Terence Trent D’Arby and Rod Stewart. Now at the age of 75 John is beginning a new chapter in his musical career. This intimate and upfront interview with John Kelly will provide fascinating insights into John Sheahan’s life in music over the past five decades. 8

From his shows on the BBC to the legendary Eclectic Ballroom on Today FM and the PPI award winning ‘Mystery Train’ on RTÉ1, he has always kept the focus on the music.

DIT Irish Traditional Music Ensemble, directed by Odhrán Ó Casaide and Kieran Hanrahan, is made up of fulltime undergraduate and postgraduate conservatory students of Irish traditional music. The ensemble, which combines both instrumental and vocal music, was originally modelled on the pioneering work of Seán O Riada and Ceoltóirí Cualainn. Since its inauguration, the ensemble has forged its own unique sound and style drawing on the rich musical environment that surrounds it. The ensemble is in the enviable position of featuring some of the finest young musical talent in Ireland today. DeBARRA City Hall Wednesday Jan 28th The DeBARRA clan represent the third generation of performers from a family steeped in traditional music, song and the Irish language. With roots in Co. Cork, the six De Barra brothers and their sister were raised in Dublin and began their performing careers as children. As a group, DeBARRA perform a combination of lively dance tunes and airs, original compositions, the tunes of the old harpers and traditional songs in Irish. The instrumentation in the clan ranges from harp, whistles, flute and bodhrán to bouzouki, keys and concert piano.

St. Werburgh’s Church Wednesday Jan 28th Following the release of his critically acclaimed debut album ‘My Friend Marx’ in 2011, Marc O’Reilly has established himself as one of the most exciting artists within the folk/blues genre earning comparisons with artists such as John Martyn and Bon Iver. 2013 saw Marc tour all over Europe including appearances at major festivals like Glastonbury, Electric Picnic and Boardmasters and squeezing in a trip to the US to appear at the Live in the Vineyard Festival in Napa, California. ‘Human Herdings’, a new collection of songs has met with universal acclaim since its release in March. This is a troubadour at the very height of his powers

Musically brooding and brash, sassy and sentimental, where the gravel meets the glass. Alternating between contrasting styles, sometimes raw, sometimes layered, the five-piece always pack an emotional punch. The band recorded, produced and released their first album, Broken Conversations, in 2012, then spent most of 2013 touring Ireland and the UK, where they cultivated great reviews and a following at home and abroad. SARI is a not for profit organisation. Its aim is to present sporting and cultural events that brings people together from different cultural backgrounds. LEONARD BARRY City Hall Thursday Jan 29th Born in Tralee, Co Kerry and raised in nearby Kilmoyley, Leonard began his musical tutelage at the age of eight under the guidance of his Uncle Bert O’Brien and dedicated himself to mastering the Uileann pipes aged 15. While North Kerry is not known for its piping tradition, people such as Paddy Keenan and Liam O’Flynn quickly became strong influences upon Leonard’s playing. He has been described within the pages of The Irish Times as …’a piper with an eye for cut-glass detail, he etches out a tune with enviable precision…’. Notable performances include appearances at many International festivals including - The Hong Kong Folk Festival, Skagen Festival (Denmark) and Shetland Folk Festival. In 14

City Hall Thursday Jan 29th ICE-The Irish Concertina Ensemble comprises five internationally renowned and highly creative exponents of the Anglo Concertina; Tim Collins, Edel Fox, Caitlín Ní Gabhann, Mícheál Ó Raghallaigh and Pádraig Rynne. Integrating bass, baritone and piccolo concertinas with the standard treble concertina, ICE presents a new and highly innovative sonic template for concertina music in Irish traditional music today. Drawing on the wealth of experience and artistic creativity within the ensemble, the quintet explores and extends the melodic, percussive, rhythmic and harmonic boundaries of the concertina, creating in the process, a completely new performance trajectory for the instrument. Mick Flannery realised long ago that songwriting was the best part of this strange job of being a jobbing-gigging musician. “It’s never a chore”, Flannery says about the craft. “The creation is the nicest part, it’s something you always have and you can use it to work through stuff that’s in your head. You have to take it seriously if it’s going to be any good. It’s always my favourite thing, like putting Lego blocks together. You can make a lot of things with Lego.”

SWEENEY’S MEN St. Patrick’s Cathedral Thursday Jan 29th Sweeney’s Men have often been described as a seminal influence on the revival of folk music in Ireland and abroad in the ’60s, ’70s and beyond, paving the way for all who would follow in their trad footsteps. When Johnny Moynihan and Terry Woods reunited for Andy Irvine’s birthday gig in 2012 they rediscovered their joy for live performance and haven’t looked back since. Expect to hear their trademark interplay between mandolin and bouzouki. Expect to be moved and charmed by some of the best in the business!

The only musician ever in the history of Comhaltas Ceolteóirí Éireann to have won four All-Ireland titles on the same day, Louise Mulcahy first appeared a number of years ago on a compilation of young pipers entitled ‘A New Dawn’ released by Na Píobairí Uilleann. Born in Abbeyfeale, Co Limerick Louise is now a well-established performer and tutor. AN AUDIENCE WITH DONOVAN Presented By John Kelly House of Lords Friday Jan 30th Born Donovan Philips Leitch in 1946, this folk-rock-pop troubadour exploded onto the scene in 1965 and went on to attain legendary status. This is a performer who can truly be regarded as a member of the British rock aristocracy. From folk to psychedelia through pop and back again, Donovan re-shaped the musical landscape with a rare individuality and utterly unique repertoire. His is an enviable back-catalogue that remains as relevant and vibrant today as any contemporary artist’s with songs such as ‘Jennifer Juniper’, ‘Mellow Yellow’ and ‘Hurdy Gurdy Man. CARA DILLON & BAND St. Michan’s Church Friday Jan 30th Cara Dillon makes music that transcends genres and crosses barriers. While she is an accomplished trad musician, she is no purist, making music that reaches beyond the constraints and limitations of tradition. “To me, you can go anywhere with every song. The melody and message is at the forefront of everything I do. I don’t really care where the song came from, how old it is, and who did it first. It’s whether it strikes a note in my heart, does it haunt me, do I need to sing it?” Raised in the small village of Dungiven, Northern Ireland, Cara has been singing all her life. Following up on their recent CD release on the Béal label, l’air du temps/the spirit of the times, piper Mark Redmond and organist David Bremner present an hour-long concert for uilleann pipes and pipe organ duo, consisting of music from the CD and some new material. The two instruments intertwine amid the spacious acoustic of Christ Church Cathedral, of which Bremner is the Assistant Organist. Bremner and Redmond have been working together since 2012; the project is an exploration of the connections (real/ imagined) between two distinct traditions: traditional Irish slow airs and the music of the French Classical organ school. The two musicians journey through an atmospheric re-imagining of Eighteenth-Century Ireland

and France - a period of upheaval and revolutionary ferment as well as a fertile time of cross-influences. Where historical evidence is patchy, new arrangements and compositions by Bremner fabricate imaginary musical connections. The performers gratefully acknowledge the support of the Arts Council Deis Recording Award for the production of the CD.

Legendary uilleann piper, Liam O’Flynn, a founder member of iconic traditional band Planxty, brings together a quartet featuring the cream of Irish traditional musicianship. Pianist and composer Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin has redefined how Irish traditional music is played on piano with his lyrical and inventive touch. Fiddle-player Paddy Glackin needs little introduction to lovers of Irish music. A Dubliner with Donegal ancestry, he was a founder member of famed traditional ensemble The Bothy Band. Completing the quartet is Belfast-born cellist, Neil Martin, a fine uilleann piper and composer in his own right. Their St. Patrick’s Cathedral concert marks only their second appearance in Ireland since they came together in late 24

At TradFest we’ve broadened our horizons to showcase the full spectrum of the Irish music story. We want to celebrate original Irish music that resonates with Irish audiences. What better way to do it than with a performance from a band that broke the mould… The Undertones emerged from Derry in 1977, the result of five friends learning to play guitar and drums in time with someone singing. They released ‘Teenage Kicks’ in 1978 on the Good Vibrations indie label in Belfast. The track received the ultimate accolade from DJ John Peel - he played it twice in a row on his BBC radio show. In 1999 they reconvened, with fellow Derryman Paul McLoone replacing Fergal Sharkey on vocals. The band released a collection of new songs called ‘Get What You Need’, which received wide critical acclaim. In 2012 a film about Terri Hooley, the legend who ran the Good Vibrations label (and released ‘Teenage Kicks’) was released, featuring various tracks from the band.

From folk to psychedelia through pop and back again, Donovan reshaped the musical landscape with a rare individuality and utterly unique repertoire. His is an enviable back-catalogue that remains as relevant and vibrant today as any contemporary artist. Astonishingly, between 1966 and ’69 he racked up a string of eleven top-forty hits in a row. Songs such as ‘Jennifer Juniper’, ‘Mellow Yellow’ and ‘Hurdy Gurdy Man’ have embedded themselves in the popular psyche. It’s actually difficult to imagine them not existing. The Kilkennys are a band with a mission - to reinvigorate traditional Irish music and ballads and take them to a new generation. Over the past twelve years they have toured the length and breadth of Ireland gaining recognition as one of the country’s hardest working bands. Formed by brothers Adam and Dave Cashin with fellow pupil Tommy Mackey while attending St Kieran’s College, Kilkenny, their unique vocal and musical sound was completed sometime later when Robbie Campion finalised the line up. YE VAGABONDS are brothers, Brían and Diarmuid Mac Gloinn. They began playing music together on the streets of their hometown forging a style based on close harmonies and acoustic instrumentation inspired by various folk traditions. Two years ago they moved to Dublin and became familiar faces around the city’s folk and blues session scene. Their Monday night session at Walsh’s, Stoneybatter has gained renown for its openness and diversity.

OLD HANNAH are a Dublin-based countryroots band from Sligo who launched their debut EP “Irish Boys” in 2014. Dynamic five-piece, NA TONNTA, have been making waves in the traditional music scene in 2014. Having met while studying Music in DkIT, the group officially formed in October 2013 and are beginning to develop their own unique approach to Irish traditional music. With several different influences, including other folk and popular musics, Na Tonnta experiment with tunes and arrangements, striving to incorporate traditional music with other genres.

TWIN HEADED WOLF are an eccentric folk flavoured double act hailing from the wilds of West Clare. Described by the Spectator magazine as one of Glastonbury’s “most special festival finds” and by HotPress magazine as “a playful, experimental, ingenious mix of old and new”. Their stage show is a carousel of ever changing instruments and eclecticism. The twins are currently in the process of completing their debut album.

THE LONGTAILS are a Dublin based band who make original folk music with guitars, vocals, banjo, mandolin, bass and percussion. Formed in May 2014, the lineup includes members from Dublin, Italy, Brazil and Japan. In their short life span they have been busy on the live scene, playing venues like Whelan’s, The Cobblestone, Sin É and Sweeney’s. The band have released their first EP ‘Lindsay Road’, recorded by Marion McEvoy in Panchord Studios. RACKHOUSE PILFER are a 6-piece stomping Irish-Americana Folk Band mixing Bluegrass, Alt-Country & Irish Folk. Hotpress have just awarded them the Jagermeister ‘Live Band of the Year’ This summer the band headlined ‘La Roche Bluegrass Festival’ in France (Europe’s biggest Bluegrass Festival) where they were voted ‘Festival Favourites’ after their performance the previous year. A film detailing the rise to fame of British group Levellers in the 1990’s told through the unique perspective of Jeremy Cunningham, the band’s bass player and artist. Directed by former Chumbawamba frontman Dunstan Bruce, the film focuses on the Levellers’ phenomenal success between 1988 and 1998 before they disappeared for a time.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the film Director Dunstan Bruce and members of the band (who will also perform an acoustic set in St. Patrick’s Cathedral during the festival).

However, despite reaching their lowest ebb, the band never split up and after a few years in the wilderness they reinvented themselves as a self-managing collective with their own studio, label and Beautiful Days festival, and in the process became unexpected survivors of the UK’s famously fickle music industry.

RTÉ Radio One’s popular traditional music programme Céilí House will have a special TradFest broadcast live from The Merchant’s Arch Bar. Presenter Kieran Hanrahan will present a night of song and chat featuring some of TradFest’s top acts as well as introducing audiences to emerging talent from the world of trad and folk. Kieran Hanrahan is one of the most respected tenor banjo players in Irish traditional music. Over the years, Kieran Hanrahan has helped to found a number of traditional bands, Inchiquin, Stockton’s Wing, and Templehouse Ceili Band. Since 1991 Kieran is known widely as the traditional music broadcaster with RTE 52

BRAY GOSPEL CHOIR St. Michan’s Church Sunday Feb 1st Bray Gospel Choir is a non-denominational group of singers with a passion for gospel and soul music. Started in January 2009 by four close friends with various musical backgrounds and a shared passion for singing, by 2010 Bray Gospel Choir had expanded to over 50 members and gained a new musical director. They worked with Mary Coughlan on a charity show for Umoza, joining her on her album ‘The Magdalene Laundries’. Since 2013, Bray Gospel Choir has been under the direction of Bronagh McManus and continues to expand their performance repertoire. 2015 will mark Bray Gospel Choir’s 6th Anniversary as a group, and 56

In the early 1960s the folk singer and music collector Pete Seeger (1919-2014) was a figurehead of the folk revival in America, known and respected as a performer, song writer and civil rights activist. Buoyed by newfound success, Pete and his family embarked upon a year-long world tour in 1963/64. As part of the tour the Seegers visited Ireland, where they met and recorded some of the brightest stars of the Irish folk music scene at the time. In May 1964 they travelled to rural southwest Donegal in search of an altogether different individual; elusive folk music legend John Doherty. Meeting just outside the market town of Glenties, the Seegers spent a day filming and interviewing Doherty with the help of

his friend and patron Malachy McCloskey and the English folk-music collector Peter Kennedy. This film footage is a lasting memorial to the unique bond formed between two musical figures that came from such different worlds, yet had so much in common. This film event will include an introduction by Danny Diamond and Dr Donal Caulfield, both fiddlers, who will incorporate a short musical performance of examples of Doherty’s music.

A Donegal Music Album - an insight into the music of Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and the vibrant Donegal Gaeltacht traditional music scene. This exhibition looks at the remarkable life in music of one of Ireland’s leading musicians through archival photographs and previously unseen family photo collections. Born and raised in the heartland of the Gaoth Dobhair Gaeltacht in Donegal, Mairéad Ni Mhaonaigh is a native Irish speaker and learned her songs and tunes from her family and neighbours. Mairéad is internationally known as one of the most important fiddle players playing in the unique Donegal style.

The Carty Sisters, are a three piece new-folk/ trad group from Wexford who are creating a major buzz within the music industry. Hailing from County Sligo, Iontas won the 2014 Siansa Gael Linn, the most prestigious award for young traditional music groups. All the musicians are under 17 years of age, but display a great maturity in both their playing and performance. Their repertoire includes traditional songs sung in English and Irish, along with both well-known and newly-composed tunes in the traditional genre.

The little horses spend their days helping the children who aren’t able to move very well on their own to sit up and feel ten feet tall as they explore the sensory trail. This soft and pliable modelling clay is fun to squeeze, shape and mould. It is also extremely therapeutic to use. The workshops will last for 1 hour; each participating child will make their own unique model inspired by a traditional Irish theme. The Clayotic model will be a permanent keepsake of your time at TradFest 2015. This workshop promises to be loads of fun and a great creative outlet for the little ones…

This historic place of worship was built in 1178, shortly after the arrival of the AngloNormans, and named after St. Werburgh, abbess of Ely and patron saint of Chester who died in 699 AD. Since 1095 St. Michan’s has stood witness to a millennium of the City’s history and houses the world-famous crypts containing the mummified remains of many of Dublin’s most influential 17th, 18th and 19th century families. Bram Stoker, creator of the “Dracula” stories is believed to have been amongst the many visitors to the crypts. You would be hard pressed to think of another live music venue with a more interesting basement!

Originally home to the Royal Exchange, Dublin’s City Hall was built between 1769 and 1779 to the designs of architect Thomas Cooley. This neo-classical building contains a central entrance hall or Rotunda, with a large dome supported by twelve columns. A breathtaking example of the Georgian architecture for which Dublin is renowned. For over 800 years Dublin Castle has been at the heart of Irish history. In fact, the city gets its name from the ‘Dubh Linn’ or Black Pool, on the site of the present Castle Gardens and Coach House. The Printworks is the largest and newest venue in Dublin Castle, opened for Ireland’s hosting of the European Presidency in 2013. It is located in the lower courtyard on the ground floor of the Stamping Building. An incredible place to experience live music.

In the company of some of the other TradFest venues The Button Factory is very much the new kid on the block. While it may not have witnessed a thousand years of Dublin’s history, it has surely played host to a thousand unforgettable live-music shows since it opened its doors. Located in the refurbished Temple Bar Music Centre on Curved St, this custom-designed music venue boasts state of the art sound and lighting systems. Right at the beating heart of the Cultural Quarter…

Currently home to the Bank of Ireland, this imposing structure was built in 1729 to house the Irish Parliament, which it did until the passing in 1801 of the Act of Union. It still retains many stunning architectural features dating from its heyday. Highlights include the windowless front portico, built to avoid distractions from the outside when Parliament was in session, 18th-century tapestries, golden mace, and a sparkling crystal chandelier. There is arguably no other venue in the city with a greater sense of occasion.
