ALL ABOUT TRADFEST
FÁILTE!
TradFest was conceived in 2006 as a boutique traditional music festival, the first of its kind in the capital. We set out to create something special - a festival celebrating the top-tier of both home-grown and international trad and folk artists that could also serve as a showcase for the next generation of Irish talent. From a modest but determined start the festival has exceeded expectations, year on year. The past decade has been a process of evolution for our event, as the festival has grown in size, ambition and musical scope. We now attract a broader line-up that appeals to the purist and the merely curious alike.
KIERAN HANRAHAN Festival Director
Although TradFest today is one of Ireland’s largest festivals of traditional music we’ve grown to embrace artists from the words of folk, nu-folk and even (who would have thought) rock and roll! It’s important to us that TradFest stays special - we are still a boutique late Winter festival, drawing a veil across the darkest season and welcoming in the light and vitality of Spring. We take great pleasure in inviting you to join us in some of Dublin’s most magical, historic places to celebrate song craft and elevate musicianship. Let the melodies and rhythms move through you, this is Trad without frontiers…
Welcome to TradFest Temple Bar 2017. We have another exceptional, eclectic and exciting mix of legendary performers and emerging artists who are just embarking on their musical journeys in some of Dublin’s most iconic venues. Our programme features music from around the globe reflecting our festival theme for 2017 - Trad without Frontiers. Reflecting the success of our Gala Night in Dublin Castle last year we return to this historic venue this year for what should be an exceptional couple of nights of music, song, dance and entertainment.
This is a celebration of the music that lies in the Irish soul. IRISH INDEPENDENT
Something that started small, with just a couple of venues and a handful of performers, has grown wings, 4

He has recorded two solo albums as well as various other albums with the band Providence and with two three-in-a-row winning Ceili Bands. Mícheál is also much in demand both at home and abroad as a tutor of the concertina.
Paddy Keenan was born in Trim, Co. Meath, into a travelling family steeped in traditional music. Paddy took up the uilleann pipes at the age of ten, playing his first major concert at the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin when he was 14. Having experimented with numerous musical genres he returned to Ireland to found one of the most influential bands of the 1970’s – The Bothy Band. They set about merging a driving rhythm section with traditional Irish tunes in ways that had never been heard before. Bothy bandmate Donal Lunny once described Paddy as “the Jimi Hendrix of the pipes”. As a solo artist he has a toured the globe in addition

- A MUSICAL TRIBUTE
Oliver Hughes was many things to many people; master brewer, husband, father, intrepid entrepreneur and friend. After his untimely passing in the summer of 2016 there was much written about Oliver and his influence on the brewing and hospitality business; in Temple Bar we knew another side of Oliver, his commitment to the promotion of music and culture, particularly Irish traditional music. As chairman of Temple Bar Company Oliver was committed to not only establishing TradFest but also in making it a success; and to this end he presided over many launches, introduced many concerts and travelled overseas promoting the festival and enjoying the 12

music. We were privileged to have Oliver’s seal of approval for the 2017 programme; it was publically unveiled, sadly, on the same week that he passed away. For those of us lucky to have shared part of life’s journey with Oliver tonight is an opportunity to remember him during this special tribute concert featuring a wide array of trad and folk musicians. Proceeds from this concert will go to ChildVision’s special Musical Instrument Fund, helping bring music alive for blind children through music therapy and lessons.

of the sea. The call and response to the “Shantyman” characterized the spirit of sailors working in unison and relieved the monotony of constant routine. However it also has its tender side expressed in the songs of longing, loss and loneliness. The changes in Dublin Docklands have almost wiped out the seaport working culture and ShantFest is an attempt to recall and acknowledge the generations of ship workers and dockers upon whose backs the strains and manifestations of progress were constructed.

IFI members €7.50/Conc €6 Non-IFI members €8/Conc €6.50
Directed by pioneering television documentarian Philip Donnellan, this rarely-seen socio-realist documentary foregrounds the lives of migrant Irish labourers in Britain of the 1960s. It shows Irishmen working on the construction of railways, tunnels and motorways, and explores ‘how their imaginations are related to their own land’. The film is interspersed with scenes of hurling at Wembley and some lively musical sessions. Traditional music enthusiasts will be rewarded by the film’s score: with musical supervision by Seamus Ennis, the traditional Irish singing of 60

It will be chaired by Prof. Lance Pettitt, Associate Tutor In English and Film, Birkbeck, University Of London who is a specialist in Irish cinema. Joining Prof. Pettitt will be joined by rising trad star Órlaith McAuliffe, who was brought up in the vibrant London Irish music scene and renowned London publican and Clare man Tom King, whose London establishment has played host to Irish and English musicians down through the years.
SONGWRITING FROM WITHIN A TRADITION: MASTERCLASS WITH IARLA Ó LIONÁIRD Sat 28th / 10.30am - 1.30pm / Irish Writers Centre, 19 Parnell Square North, Dublin 1 / €10 Booking: events@writerscentre.ie
The Irish musical landscape provides a rich tapestry for artists hoping to marry the traditional with the contemporary. This half-day masterclass with Iarla Ó Lionáird, from super group The Gloaming, will explore the opportunities (and challenges) that arise when one experiments with form and genre. How do you compete and thrive? How do you keep writing freely? Iarla will look at the practice of adaptation, the synthesis of song-writing and the poetic word, and the importance of motivation. He will also look at changes in tradition such as the migration of the oral and aural to the literal, and the importance of bringing the singing into the /TempleBarTradFest

Originally home to the Royal Exchange, Dublin’s City Hall was built between 1769 and 1779 to the designs of architect Thomas Cooley. THE HOUSE OF LORDS College Green, Dublin 2
Currently home to the Bank of Ireland, this imposing structure was built in 1729 to house the Irish Parliament, which it did until the passing in 1801 of the Act of Union. It still retains many stunning architectural features dating from its heyday. Highlights include the windowless front portico, built to avoid distractions from the outside when Parliament was in session, 18thcentury tapestries, golden mace, and a sparkling crystal chandelier. There is arguably no other venue in the city with a greater sense of occasion. THURS 26th: An Audience with Maria McKee

ST. PATRICK’S CATHEDRAL
THE BUTTON FACTORY
This historic place of worship was built in 1178, and named after St. Werburgh, abbess of Ely and patron saint of Chester who died in 699 AD. As with many of Dublin’s Anglican churches its story is one of destruction and re-construction. This is truly an atmospheric gem, rarely open to the public. Now’s your chance…
Since 1095 St. Michan’s has stood witness to a millennium of the City’s history and houses the world-famous crypts containing the mummified remains of many of Dublin’s most influential 17th, 18th and 19th century families. Bram Stoker, creator of the “Dracula” stories is believed to have been amongst the many visitors to the crypts. You would be hard pressed to think of another live music venue with a more interesting basement!
Built in honour of Ireland’s patron saint, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral stands adjacent to the famous well where legend has it Saint Patrick baptised converts on his visit to Dublin. The present building dates from 1220. The Cathedral is today the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland and also serves as a popular tourist attraction in Ireland. Saint Patrick’s Cathedral has been at the heart of Dublin and Ireland’s history and culture for over 800 years. There is little chance of not being awe-struck.
In the company of some of the other TradFest venues The Button Factory is very much the new kid on the block. While it may not have witnessed a thousand years of Dublin’s history, it has surely played host to a thousand unforgettable live-music shows since it opened its doors. This custom-designed music venue boasts state of the art sound and lighting systems. Right at the beating heart of the Cultural Quarter...
