TEAM TRADFEST

MARTIN HARTE

The boss man. Partial to herbal teas after overdosing on coffee in his 20s and 30s but still unlikely to ever cut a long story short. You'll spot him around Temple Bar no doubt - it's his natural habitat!

Meet the team that makes TradFest happen - the hardworking, event planning, venue booking, ideas bouncing, coffee drinking, jig dancing, crisis managing supergroup of seven!

STEPHEN REA

CLAUDINE MURRAY

NOEL DEMPSEY

CIARA BRADY

KIERAN HANRAHAN

ANIA SCHULER

Stephen is the long serving Patron (saint!) of TradFest. We are very proud to have this Oscar nominated, Bafta winning actor join us again this year. With his Trad chops, we know we're doing something right!

Shrewd marketeer and legendary multi-tasker, Claudine is the reason stuff gets done in the Temple Bar Company. Quite likely to get your name wrong but that’s what happens when you run the show, right?

A proud Meath man who knows a thing or two about politics. A key member of the so-called “Gang of Four” (look it up). Noel’s commitment to TradFest is second only to his passion for The Royals.

Can be found pounding the streets of Temple Bar on a daily basis. A skilled event and operations executive, Ciara’s superpowers include knowing where the best coffee is stashed in the office - which is something of a priority when Festival week rolls around!

Occassional headband wearer Kieran has regaled us with tales of his banjo prowess with Stockton's Wing (as a founder member) Michael Jackson and Sammy Davis Junior... if only he had a camera phone back then he would have snagged a selfie or 12! 4 tradfest.ie

You know when an email attachment won’t open or that Skype conference call is causing a meltdown? That’s (Argentinian born) Ania’s time to shine! She’s an IT and social media whizz and worth her weight in silver! tradfest.ie

No musical family today is more instrumental in upholding the best principles of the tradition than the Mulcahy’s of Abbeyfeale, West Limerick. Mick, Louise and Michelle Mulcahy play a dazzling array of instruments between them but it’s the sweetness and tunefulness of their ensemble playing that is most striking. According to The Irish Times - “If you like the ‘pure drop’, here it is - traditional Irish music at its natural, unadulterated and seductive best”. Mick O’Brien is a highly regarded performer and teacher of the Uilleann pipes. A precocious talent, daughter Ciara started learning violin at the age of three. An awardwinner across various instruments she is in demand as a teacher of fiddle and harp. Not to be outdone, Aoife is the leader of the newly formed Clare Memory Orchestra and performs regularly with the group Crash Ensemble.

tradfest.ie

Radiant Arcadia is an interfaith and intercultural musical collective comprised of women from the Christian, Islamic and Jewish faiths. The project is all about exploring the potential of togetherness and unity through music and the embrace of diversity. For their first release, ‘Together’ they draw on the best of their disparate cultures, from folk music to faith-based songs, to create entirely new compositions. Their credo is to explore the joy, beauty and life-force that exists within music and their live performances have been known to invoke cheering, dancing and even tears! For their first Irish appearance they will be joined by our own Aoife Scott, who will lend her golden voice and onstage charisma to the vibrant mix that is Radiant Arcadia.

Little about Wallis Bird could be described as typical. Having enjoyed a ‘blissfully happy’ childhood in Wexford she headed to Dublin as soon as she finished school. At 23 she moved to Germany for a year, enjoying success with her debut single, ‘Blossoms In The Street’ (2006), which spent twenty weeks in the German airplay charts and earned her a deal with Island Records in the UK. She moved next to London, releasing her debut album, ‘Spoons’, in 2008, while ‘New Boots’, its 2009 followup, earned her a Meteor Award as Best Newcomer. She describes her new release ‘Home’ as ‘the happy ending’ and a ‘thank you letter’ to her partner. Bird will launch the album in September, returning to her roots with a series of intimate performances in small venues. We are delighted that this vivacious, joyful and colourful talent will join the bill for TradFest 2018.

TradFest is delighted to partner with the charity Coolmine. All proceeds from this concert will go to Coolmine.

A Louth legend who embraced the spirit of The Dubliners to become a Dublin Legend. Eamonn Campbell was a great friend of TradFest having performed at the festival many times. We celebrate Eamonn’s life in music with performances by some of Ireland’s greatest trad and folk acts plus as a special performance by The Dublin Legends. Eamonn started playing guitar in the 1960s after hearing Elvis Presley's 'That's All Right' and played with the Viceroys and The Delta Boys. He met the Dubliners while touring with Dermot O'Brien in 1967 and joined the band 20 years later. Eamonn worked as musician, arranger and producer with stars such as Cilla Black, Paddy Reilly and The RTE Concert Orchestra. He produced all of 'The Dubliners’ work from 1987 onwards and was responsible for bringing The Dubliners and The Pogues together. The result was 'The Irish Rover', their biggest hit in Britain.

She has achieved All-Ireland titles on fiddle in every age category over the years, culminating with the All-Ireland Senior Fiddle Title in 2012. As the accolades and awards accumulated in 2011, Tara was chosen to play at Dublin Castle for the Queen of England during her State visit to Ireland. In 2014 Tara joined The Chieftains for their North American tour, and currently plays with them both at home and abroad. Not content with that, Tara joined the legendary band, Stockton’s Wing in 2015. This is an amazing opportunity to witness a solo show from this most prolific of collaborators. A must-see!

Sisters Maighread and Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill belong to a celebrated family of singers hailing from the Donegal Gaeltacht. The unique style and repertoire has been handed down to them through generations of the Ó Domhnaill family. Their live performances have been described as ‘unforgettably beautiful and heart-rending’. Prepare to be transported by their appearance at St Patrick’s Cathedral. Two giants of the Irish trad scene, Andy Irvine and Dónal Lunny are uniting for an evening of great music, a mixture of traditional songs and originals composed by Andy. Their unique style of accompaniment is an ongoing influence in the wider world of Irish music. The two, in their separate ways, have contributed to a veritable renaissance in Irish traditional music.

This is a celebrated partnership between one of the UK’s most inventive and influential acoustic guitarists and “the doyenne of Irish harpers”. Theirs is a breathtaking blend of traditional Irish music, hot jazz, bluegrass and baroque, spiced with striking new compositions. Expect a night of eclecticism and unbridled musical abandon. Both acclaimed musicians each in their own right, Caitlín Nic Gabhann and Ciarán Ó Maonaigh have joined forces with singer and accompanist Cathal Ó Curráin to create one of traditional music’s most impressive acts. Ciarán’s fiddle is complimented by Caitlín’s concertina and dance, her footsteps expertly tapping out the intricate and enchanting rhythms.

The lone figure of Jack O’Rourke hunched over piano keys and moody synths, is one that Irish audiences are becoming more accustomed to seeing. Whether performing his startlingly honest ballads solo or driving Spectorish rock with his band, Jack’s plaintive baritone, ethereal falsetto and piano are core. Over the last two years this artist has carved his own musical landscape and honed his songwriting voice with each successive release. Exeter-based duo Abbe Martin and Hannah Wood dovetail beautifully on their debut album, ‘For All Our Sins’, a beguiling acoustic pop collection replete with a rich lyrical sensibility. Sound of the Siren’s have built their fan base not merely through several sublime EP releases, but also through their live shows, which combine a natural facility for connecting with their audiences and unforgettable performances.

The 4 of Us are one of the biggest bands to ever come out of Northern Ireland, and hail from Newry, Co. Down. They were voted one of the Top10 Best Irish Bands Of All Time, along with the likes of U2 and Thin Lizzy, in a recent TV3 series. This multi-award-winning band have seven lauded albums under their belt and a back catalogue of memorable songs that have featured on American, British and Irish TV and film soundtracks. To this day, their smash hit Mary, remains one of the most played tracks on Irish radio. Founding members and brothers, Brendan and Declan Murphy have been captivating audiences on their recent tours of Germany and Ireland with their superb acoustic performances. We are excited to have the full band perform at TradFest.

tradfest.ie

From County Armagh, Jarlath Henderson has been playing the uilleann pipes since the age of 10. A talented and versatile musician, Jarlath also plays whistle, flute, cittern and has recently been winning over audiences with song. In 2003 he became the first and only Irish solo artist to win the prestigious BBC Young Folk Musician of the Year Award. It took 10 years for him to convert his Young Folk Award into a solo album, so busy has he been with collaborations, and with qualifying as a doctor. Now 29, he has delivered a handsome traditional album in ‘Hearts Broken, Heads Turned’, eight antique songs given modern treatments, and is about to begin recording his second. A rare talent. Jarlath will be joined on stage by his five piece band for this special TradFest performance.

In the 1960s, Judy Collins evoked both the idealism and determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later, she continues to inspire audiences with her sublime vocal power. This legendary singer-songwriter is revered for her imaginative interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk standards and her own poetically poignant original compositions. Her stunning rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” from her landmark 1967 album, Wildflowers, has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame, while her intimate version of Sondheim’s “Send in the Clowns” won “Song of the Year” at the 1975 Grammy Awards. Judy, now 76, continues to create music of hope and healing that lights up the world and speaks to the heart. This promises to be a very special night. 21

Over the past 44 years, acoustic guitar virtuoso and vocalist Pierre Bensusan has taken his unique sound to all corners of the globe. Described as a ‘genius’ by the likes of Jon Gomm and Melody Maker, immortalised by the tune ‘Bensusan’ written in tribute by the late Michael Hedges, and referenced as an important inspiration to many other great musicians, Pierre Bensusan is a multiaward winning artist whose music transcends genre and time. His style of playing defies classification - crossing world, classical, jazz, traditional, folk, pop and more. None can be isolated as simply “World Music”, “Celtic”, “Arabic” or “French”; rather, they represent our world in its current state, a world sharing itself. This is “How the guitar would want to sound if it could play itself”. Book early to avoid disappointment.

tradfest.ie

Born in Quebec of mixed Afro-Caribbean ancestry, Kaia Kater now resides in Toronto and spends extensive time in West Virginia, where she ardently studies balladry and traditional dance. As an original songwriter, she works to incorporate her perspective as one of the few people of colour in roots music into the complex racial history of the traditions themselves. Her music combines beautifully subtle oldtime banjo with soft sensibilities, mixing elements of both Canadian and American historical traditions with a decidedly modern sound. She is lauded for being one of the youngest performers in the roots scene, and at 22 years old, there’s not much arguing her progeny. Her old-time banjo-picking skills, deft arrangements and songwriting abilities have landed her in the national spotlight on both Canadian and American soil. Truly, this is Trad without frontiers. 23

There are few people as synonymous with their instrument as Johnny Kalsi is with the Punjabi doublesided barrel drum, the dhol, the instrument that lends bhangra music its distinctive sound. Born in Leeds and raised in London as a Sikh, songs and music were part of Johnny’s daily life. At seven he started to learn the tabla, progressing at fourteen to the dhol and joining a local bhangra band, Alaap. In the 1990s he was part of FunDa-Mental and Transglobal Underground before going on to work with Afro Celt Sound System and The Imagined Village. Kalsi created The Dhol Foundation in 1990 as both a school for children to learn the instrument and as a touring and recording band an ever-fluctuating group featuring 30 drummers creating a wall of drumming noise. Their TradFest show will be a great opportunity to showcase material from new release ‘Basant’.

tradfest.ie

Many music fans will know Steve Wickham from his virtuoso violin playing in The Waterboys, with whom he has played for over thirty years. In addition, Steve’s live and studio performances have made him – if not quite a household name – then certainly a household sound. His recording debut was on U2’s ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ in 1982, and his Waterboys cover of Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’, demonstrating his ‘fuzz-fiddle’ technique live on BBC R2, left Chris Evans awestruck: “The best cover we’ve ever had in the studio”, he said of the performance. Other artists with whom Steve has played include Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello and Sinead O’Connor. Band-mate and musical collaborator Mike Scott has described Steve as ‘the world’s greatest rock fiddle player’. Expect a careerspanning set featuring numbers from his second solo release ‘Beekeeper’. 25

Alan Stivell may be said to have originated the concept of Celtic Music and was undoubtedly responsible for popularising it. Nevertheless, the term remains restrictive in the eyes of the general public. Despite the wealth and breadth of “Celtic Music,” which is dear to Alan’s heart, it does not encompass all of the aspects of his music, for Alan Stivell is definitely an ardent believer in the power of cross-over music. He is and has always been an advocate for blending cultures and musical styles. While Alan Stivell created an audience for modern Breton and Celtic music, he is also widely considered to be one of the forerunners of several musical genres known as Folk-rock or the Ambient movement and especially World Music, with his seminal album “Reflets” in 1970. This is an artist who has pioneered new frontiers across musical genres.

tradfest.ie

Laoise Kelly from Westport, Co. Mayo, now living on Achill Island, is regarded as the most significant harper of her generation. She has pioneered a new style of driving instrumental harping showcased in her three critically acclaimed solo albums 'Just Harp', 'Ceis' and 'Fáilte Uí Cheallaigh'. Laoise is a founding member of traditional groups Bumblebees and Fiddletree with whom she recorded two albums and toured extensively. Throughout her solo career she has recorded on over 60 albums with many of Ireland’s foremost artists including Seamus Heaney, The Chieftains, Christy Moore, Sharon Shannon, Dónal Lunny, Tommy Makem, Matt Molloy, Tommy Peoples, Mary Black as well as Kate Bush and American country/bluegrass icon Tim O’Brien. For the harp cognoscenti and for all lovers of musical virtuosity her performance will be hotly anticipated. 27

During October 2016, Brian celebrated two birthdays. His iconic album ‘A Better Man’ turned 20 and that same week the man himself turned 50, so what better place to celebrate than on stage doing what he loves best. The experience and reflections of Francis Ledwidge, killed in the 3rd battle of Ypres 1917, becomes the inspiration for a cycle of songs arranged with wind instruments and voice, delivered by award winning sean-nós composer, Lorcán Mac Mathúna, and former 'Riverdance' uilleann piper, Eamonn Galldubh. Francis Ledwidge looked to a broad field within Irish traditions for inspiration. In the cramped and muddy trenches of the Western Front Ledwidge wrote and remembered. He wrote of the woods and fields of Meath, the twisting Boyne, and memories and legend, and a Rising in Dublin. Lorcán Mac Mathúna and Eamonn Galldubh reflect upon these connections of place and memory and the intrusion of grim reality. Expect a moving and thoughtful evening where poetry meets music.

Maria’s album ‘Sing’ released in 2012 featured duets with Damien Rice, Paul Brady and John Prine. Ireland’s leading music mag Hot Press described Sing as ‘Maria’s Masterpiece’. MARTHA WAINWRIGHT Date: Sat 27th of January Time: Door 8pm/Show 8.30pm Venue: St. Patrick’s Cathedral Ticket: €31.99

32 tradfest.ie

Martha was born in New York City to folk legends Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III. With an undeniable voice and an arsenal of powerful songs, Martha Wainwright is a beguiling performer and a refreshingly different force in music. Martha began building a buzz with her well-noted EPs, prior to her 2005 critically and commercially successful debut LP, ‘Martha Wainwright’. Eleven years later she released ‘Goodnight City’, returning to the rawness of that first release. Currently Martha is finishing a book titled ‘Stories I Might Regret Telling You’ which, like her songs, is a window into her life without artifice, pretension or fakery. Though born to royalty, Martha Wainwright has always worn her aristocracy lightly and with infectious good humour. We are thrilled to welcome her for TradFest 2018.

THE OH HELLO’S Date: Sat 27th of January Time: Door 8pm/Show 8.30pm Venue: Whelans Ticket: €21.99

The Oh Hellos are Maggie and Tyler Heath from Southern Texas. The two began making music together in 2011 with a song written for their mom’s birthday, followed later that year by their self-titled, self-produced, independently released EP. ‘Dear Wormwood’, their latest album was recorded, piece by piece, in the house where Maggie and Tyler live in San Marcos, TX. Much like their live performance, the album presents two alternating faces: at times delicate, intimate, affectionate; and at others, soaring and towering and joyfully explosive. Their influences range from Fleet Foxes and Sufjan Stevens to The Middle East and the Muppets, bending and blending styles and genres into a unique mixture of eclectic folk rock.

TRAD GALA SHIRLEY COLLINS Date: Sat 27th January Time: Door 8pm/Show 8.30pm Venue: St. Michan’s Church Ticket: €25.99

Born in Hastings in 1935, Shirley was fascinated by folk songs as she was growing up, songs she heard on the radio or sung by her grandparents. She left home for London to immerse herself in the burgeoning folk scene, later touring the US recording American folk songs and blues. Shirley cemented her role at the forefront of the Folk Revival, recording over a dozen albums including the influential ‘Folk Roots, New Routes’ before losing her voice in the 80s. 38 years later she returns with a new album, ‘Lodestar’, which has been hailed as her best ever work. The word legend can be used too lightly. In the case of this peerless collector and interpreter of songs it barely seems sufficient.

Tim now a name on the world stage in his own right after seventeen years of hard work, is rated by many to be one of the world’s finest ever Melodeon and Guitar players in the folk & contemporary scene. Moya Brennan’s effortless vocals and timeless music pay homage not only to her vibrant traditional Irish heritage but also her grasp of contemporary forms. This is very much in evidence on her new album, ‘Canvas’, which was largely co-written with her daughter and son, Aisling and Paul. With Clannad Moya rose to prominence with a pioneering approach to traditional music which has garnered them 15 million record sales worldwide and a string of awards, including a Grammy in 1998. Their sound has since become the benchmark for the Celtic music genre. Moya’s solo career has continued that success with 9 albums to her credit and more in the pipeline. Her solo shows combine all the musicality and power of Clannad but with added, heartwarming intimacy, this promises to be a rich and moving experience. 37

Influenced by the likes of Liane La Havas, Fiona Apple and Hundred Waters, Ailbhe continues to impress with solid song writing, intricate melodies, and radio friendly hooks. Those who have seen her stunning set for Irish TV show ‘Other Voices’ in Dingle will know what to expect at TradFest 2018. Dublin singer-songwriter Ciara Sidine’s sound has been described as ‘Americana with an unmistakably Celtic feel to its poetic lyrics and confident vocals’. This is an artist unafraid to tackle the big themes of struggles and hopes, both personal, political and creative. Currently working on her third album, Karrie Sullivan was something of a latecomer to the music industry, waiting until the grand old age of thirty four to write her first song, ‘Stay Away’. On the basis of this track and the others that have followed, we should be glad that she decided to follow her muse.

THIS IS HOW WE FLY Date: Sun 28th January Time: Door 8pm/Show 8.30pm Venue: St Michan’s Church Ticket: €19.99

tradfest.ie

This is How We Fly brings together four musicians, each of them rooted in different cultures and musical vocabularies, each on the cusp of their most fertile and creative years. Individually, each member has carved out a reputation for not just mastering their chosen fields, but rising above, redefining and renewing the musical world they come from. A sublime Irish fiddler Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, who’s not afraid to step outside convention, a sophisticated Appalachian hard shoe dancer, Nic Gareiss stepping into the rhythmic foreground, a thoughtful Dublin jazzman, Seán Mac Erlaine who has moved beyond the linear constraints of the genre, and a lyrical Swedish percussionist, Petter Berndalen redefining the melodic and sonic place of drums within the contours of traditional song. Their music crackles with a playful energy and soars with a liberated spirit. Unmissable! 39

The Kilkennys have been going strong for almost two decades, ‘but don’t tell anyone’ says founding member Davey Cashin. Initially called Uisce Beatha before they decided to change their name in 2008 for something more recognisable and ‘pronounceable’. Drawing influence from The Dubliners, they named themselves for their home county and haven’t looked back since. Although Davey, Robbie and Tommy Mackey remain the founding members, new recruit Mick Martin has been brought in to bring the uileann pipes to the band’s sound. That sound has evolved over the years into a unique high-energy hybrid of folk and trad that always generates a huge amount of audience participation. Their Front Row Session will be sure to generate a lot of interest.

Stockton’s Wing began their career in Ennis in 1977, taking their name from the Bruce Springsteen song ‘Backstreets’. The band signed a deal with Tara Records after winning the Trad section of a music contest in Limerick. A group called U2 won the rock section. The band’s first album, received rave reviews from national and international press. Many more raves and triumphs would follow. Thirty years ago In Tua Nua supported U2 on the European leg of The Joshua Tree Tour. The band toured extensively throughout Europe and the US during the 1980s promoting their albums “Vaudeville” and “The Long Acre”. During that decade the band had 9 top 20 singles in Ireland. One of Ireland’s premier live acts, they shared stages with Bob Dylan (Slane), Fleetwood Mac, and Eurythmics to name but a few while also opening on stadium tours for Simple Minds and of course U2. In Tua Nua reformed for some gigs in 2004 and then again in 2012 when they played Electric Picnic. The new line up includes Rosie MacKenzie, a talented young fiddle player from Canada, Sarge O'Hara on keys, Dave McGinley on guitar and Eoin Dillon on uileann pipes. They will be joining original band members Leslie Dowdall, Paul Byrne and Jack Dublin. 49

Brendan McCreanor (uilleann piper), SJ McArdle (rock and folk musician) and Barry Kieran (champion fiddler) all hail from Louth which shows in their selection of traditional music and in their self-written compositions. ‘False Deceiver’, their debut album features thunderous sets of traditional tunes vie-ing with lyrical, atmospheric songs.

Danish artist Krass Clement’s photographic work emerges from two traditions: Scandinavian melancholy and the ‘flaneur’ tradition from the Parisian school. His dark aesthetic evokes introspective, psychological landscapes that sit somewhere between fiction and reality. ‘Drum’ was photographed over a single evening in a small pub in Drum, County Monaghan. Clement created one of the most important contributions to the international canon of contemporary photo books. The book comes to concentrate on one principal character in the shadowy pub: a hunched, weather-beaten man sitting alone with his drink. This exhibition also includes the world premiere of work made in Dublin in 1991. During the weekend of the festival there will be a host of trad musicians responding to the work on the walls . 69

A searing portrait of one of Ireland’s most renowned traditional musicians - concertina player Noel Hill, as he recovers from a brutal assault. At the turn of the century, Noel Hill decided to turn over a new leaf and move with his young family to the rural idyll of Connemara. In 2008, he was brutally assaulted by a builder with whom he had been in financial dispute. Noel required 10 hours of corrective surgery while the psychological damage robbed him of his ability to play. Paddy Hayes’ documentary follows Noel as he journeys from his formative musical years in West Clare, to his darkest hours following the assault and then through his recovery. Today he is playing as well as ever and the film is ultimately a reflection on the redemptive power of music. Funded by TG4 and the BAI. 71

TRADFEST HISTORIC VENUES Because this is a festival like no other, our feature venues are historical landmarks, many dating back 1000 years. From the majesty of the Rotunda at Dublin City Hall to the splendour of the soaring gothic nave of St Patrick's Cathedral the TradFest live experience is immeasurably enhanced by the experience of just being in these special venues. If you're a visitor to Ireland, or have just never explored the architectural heritage of the city, this is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in both musical melody and the drumbeat of history. This year we have added the internationally renowned music pub and venue, Whelan's, to our roster. Not quite as old as the other venues, Whelan's is nonetheless a landmark and legend in its own right. A

great favourite with audiences and artists alike, a gig at Whelan's is always a memorable experience. It’s not a church but music fans have worshipped at this temple of song for a very long time! You can learn more about our historical venues by listening to our historical TradCasts, available through our free TradFest App. The historic venues are not purposebuilt theatres so some sightlines are restricted. We endeavour to do our best to prepare venues to the very highest standards to make your experience an enjoyable one. Please note that seating is unallocated. Not all our venues are wheelchair accessible so staff will need to be notified in advance. Please contact us if you require special assistance: admin@templebarcompany.com

DUBLIN CITY HALL

PRINTWORKS AT DUBLIN CASTLE

THE HOUSE OF LORDS

ST. WERBURGH’S CHURCH

Dublin’s City Hall was built between 1769 and 1779 to the designs of architect Thomas Cooley. This neo-classical building contains a central entrance hall or Rotunda, with a large dome supported by twelve columns. A breathtaking example of the Georgian architecture for which Dublin is renowned.

For over 800 years Dublin Castle has been at the heart of Irish history. In fact, the city gets its name from the ‘Dubh Linn’ or Black Pool, on the site of the present Castle Gardens and Coach House. The Printworks is the largest and newest venue in Dublin Castle, opened for Ireland’s hosting of the European Presidency in 2013. It is located in the lower courtyard on the ground floor of the Stamping Building. An incredible place to experience live music.

Currently home to the Bank of Ireland, this imposing structure was built in 1729 to house the Irish Parliament, which it did until the passing in 1801 of the Act of Union. It still retains many stunning architectural features dating from its heyday. Highlights include the windowless front portico, built to avoid distractions from the outside when Parliament was in session, 18th-century tapestries, golden mace, and a sparkling crystal chandelier. There is arguably no other venue in the city with a greater sense of occasion.

This historic place of worship was built in 1178, and named after St. Werburgh, abbess of Ely and patron saint of Chester who died in 699 AD. As with many of Dublin’s Anglican churches its story is one of destruction and re-construction. This is truly an atmospheric gem, rarely open to the public. Now’s your chance…

ST. MICHAN’S CHURCH

ST. PATRICK’S CATHEDRAL

RATHFARNHAM CASTLE

Since 1095 St. Michan’s has stood witness to a millennium of the City’s history and houses the world-famous crypts containing the mummified remains of many of Dublin’s most influential 17th, 18th and 19th century families. Bram Stoker, creator of the “Dracula” stories is believed to have been amongst the many visitors to the crypts. You would be hard pressed to think of another live music venue with a more interesting basement!

Built in honour of Ireland’s patron saint, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral stands adjacent to the famous well where, legend has it, Saint Patrick baptised converts on his visit to Dublin. Satirist and writer Jonathan Swift was Dean of St Patrick's. Dating from 1220, The Cathedral is today the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland and serves as a popular tourist attraction. Saint Patrick’s Cathedral has been at the heart of Dublin and Ireland’s history and culture for over 800 years. There is little chance of not being awe-struck.

Rathfarnham Castle is an Elizabethan fortified house commissioned in 1583 by Archbishop Adam Loftus as his private residence. The design was radically modern at the time and combined defensive features with all the comforts of a luxurious home. The castle was extensively remodelled in the eighteenth century under a series of later owners and has elegant neo-classical interiors to the designs of renowned architects Sir William Chambers and James ‘Athenian’ Stuart.

WHELANS 25 Wexford St, Dublin 2

For over 25 years Whelan’s has been at the beating heart of music in Ireland. The earliest record of a public house on the site dates from 1772. Whelan’s reputation as a music venue is universal having played host to such legends as Jeff Buckley, Nick Cave, Christy Moore, Ed Sheeran and Artic Monkeys to name but a few. So beloved is it that musicians from all over the world consistently request to perform there and return to its stage. Whelan’s is, very simply, where you want to see your favourite acts perform. An enduring temple to live performance in Dublin. WED 24th: Wallis Bird THUR 25th: The 4 of Us FRI 26th: The Dhol Foundation SAT 27th: The Oh Hello’s 81
