Competing Visions for Israel

Thursday, March 30

7:00 pm, Corwin Family Sanctuary

Jewish settlers and JStreet have experienced their fair share of demonization in the Jewish community and beyond. While they both have the goal of ensuring a secure Jewish future, their vision for the path to that objective could not be more opposed. What happens when we stop listening to the echo chambers of those who agree with us and hear out the other side?

Join Yishai Fleisher, spokesman for the Jewish community in Hebron, and Alan Elsner, Special Advisor to the President of JStreet in conversation together as they each articulate the case for their respective visions for the Jewish state.

What Reform Jews Can Learn from Chabad

Thursday, April 27

Many Reform Jews find Chabad's unique form of Jewish evangelism unsettling, but the movement's success is undeniable. Rabbi Sarah Bassin will engage author of The Secret of Chabad in conversation about the philosophy and tactics of Chabad's outreach. What can we, as Reform Jews, learn from Chabad while still retaining our most core values of pluralism and egalitarianism? For details, check your weekly Chailights email or contact Rabbi Bassin at RabbiBassin@tebh.org.

Temple Emanuel's Month of Love

Arise, my love; my fair one, come away! For now the winter is past, the rains are over and gone. Song of Songs 2:10-11

In those verses, King Solomon, considered the wisest ruler Israel has ever known, reveals a secret to deepening our relationships: Get away when spring arrives! As we continue to celebrate LOVE throughout this year, let us seize these words written three thousand years ago and make them a part of our lives today. Let us rise up with someone we love, and get away!

These days and in our world, we are busy with so many commitments and responsibilities. Jobs, family, friends, organizations and our devices, can keep us from connecting with those we love the most. To be our best selves, we need to cultivate those relationships, and sometimes revitalize them. Spring is the perfect season to grow with those you love.

Temple Emanuel is declaring the first day of spring, March 21st, as the beginning of the “Month of Love.” In the 30 days that follow, we encourage (would love to say require) every one of you, our Temple Emanuel members, to “get away” for at least

March 21 ‒ April 21

one night, with someone you love. You can get away with a wife or husband, a partner or companion, a son, a daughter, a brother or sister, a parent, a friend, or even a couple of friends. Get a baby, dog, cat, or house sitter if you need to, but get away… minimum, one night…a weekend is even better.

We complete the month of rejuvenation and celebration of love on Friday, April 21st, with a congregational dinner and a Shabbat service featuring a string quartet.

On March 21st, the winter will pass, and the rains will cease –and spring will be upon us. Say to someone you love: “Rise up, and come away!”

With Love, Rabbi Jonathan Aaron

Prayer of the Month

Ahavat Olam beit Yisrael amcha a’havta, Torah u’miztvot chukim u’mishpatim otanu limad’ta.

Everlasting Love You offered Your people Israel by teaching us Torah and mitzvot, laws and precepts.

In honor of our community’s Month of Love I chose to focus on the beautiful prayer, Ahavat Olam, for this month’s prayer. Judaism is a fan of love. Love of oneself, love of one’s neighbor,

and love of God. But this prayer is specifically an acknowledgment of God’s gift of Torah to the people Israel. We refer to God as “Everlasting Love,” as we promise to take the lessons of the Torah with us and to “reflect upon them morning and night” as long as God does not stop loving us.

Did you know that the root of the word Torah actually means instruction? The Torah literally gives us direction, examples, and meaning to enhance our own lives. And so, I like to think that the Torah is the gift that keeps on giving. When you learn, you retain the lessons and values with you for a lifetime.

While the Month of Love might solely feel like an expression of deep emotion to the people around you, perhaps you can take a moment to acknowledge the lessons of life that surround you and that enable you to recognize love. We are thankful for our brains that allow us to learn and our bodies that allow us to feel as we carry on the instruction of God and our historical narrative, in love.
