Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. • September 18, 2018 - a man planning a mass shooting at the Islamic Center of Northeast Florida was sentenced to 5 years in prison.
• October 27, 2018 - 11 people were killed and 7 injured during a Shabbat morning service at the Tree of Life - Or L’Simcha Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It has been just over a month since we learned during the kiddush/luncheon celebrating the Bar Mitzvah of Cameron Sakelarios that a gunman had entered the Tree of Life - Or L’Simcha Synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh. We are still reeling with a mixture of anger and fear over that news. Suddenly, we realized what seemed to be the impossible occurred; synagogues are not exempt from the mass shootings that have plagued houses of worship over the past few years. Two days after the shooting in Pittsburgh we had a prayer service and vigil at Temple Israel during which numerous civic and religious leaders spoke words of comfort and assured us of their support of the Jewish community. Over 400 people, Jews and non-Jews, packed our sanctuary to hear these reassuring words. In addition, Senator Maggie Hassan called me and offered her support and assistance in whatever way we might want federal help and guidance. Our prayer service and vigil was just one of hundreds of such events that took place during the week following the shooting throughout North America and around the world. These services and vigils testify to the solidarity of most people in the fight against hatred and anti-Semitism. We should feel safe living during the time that we do and in the place we call home, but many of us still ask, “Should we?”
2
Our lay leaders at Temple Israel, like Jewish lay leaders around the country, have participated in a national webinar featuring leaders of the AntiDefamation League and leaders of the national synagogue organizations of all the Jewish religious movements. Our lay leaders are also working closely with law enforcement officials and the FBI to ensure that we as a synagogue remain secure during all activities in our building. After such an attack, whether it be on fellow Jews as was the case in Pittsburgh, or on any innocent people who fall victim to such atrocities, it is only natural to start placing blame somewhere. Usually, such blame is politically based. However, I believe that finger pointing is useless and all too often counter-productive. The words spoken by Elisha Wiesel, son of the late Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, at a prayer service and vigil in New York City after the Pittsburgh shooting bear some truth: “Every member of the Jewish community has a role to play in confronting hatred. If you are a Jew who believes in progressive values, then it is your prerogative and responsibility to fix the left in this country, especially if you are associated with a movement that links the rights of women and the rights of African-Americans with anti-Israel groups. If you are on the conservative side as a Jew, then it’s your prerogative and responsibility to, for God’s sake, fix the Republican party, especially if you are associated with a movement that regards assault rifles as our national inheritance or that fails to have compassion on the stranger. And if you somehow find yourself caught in the center… it is your prerogative and responsibility to build bridges and create safe space where well-meaning and thoughtful people can come together and find solutions. Make this world better where you are.” This is a time during which we must come together to fix our society, and to work together to make our world a safer place for ourselves and for future generations. L’shalom, Rabbi Ira Korinow
Dear Fellow Congregants,
sanctuary.
Temple Israel has had security plans in place for many years. However, the horrific events in Pittsburgh made it a priority for the board and other members of the Temple Israel community to revisit these plans to see what we can do better.
* We are consulting with congregants with specific knowledge in security measures to update escape options, including escape ladders from the upper floor.
The board of directors has had several meetings over the last month to discuss security matters, and we have drawn on the knowledge and support of national Jewish organizations as well as local law enforcement agencies. This past Sunday, we also had a general meeting with the congregation to provide an update about our current and enhanced security measures, and to solicit feedback from the community. Here are the concrete steps that we have already taken and are in the process of taking. * Both the preschool and Hebrew school are updating emergency plans, and the teachers as well as the staff in the building recently received training from the Portsmouth Police. * The students in the preschool and Hebrew school also will receive regular training in all aspects of emergency preparedness. We learned at the congregational meeting that some students in middle school already are receiving this training, including active shooter drills. * We are updating our physical security systems so that we are not reliant on a phone-line but rather have a broader-based means of communicating with the police and fire departments even when phone lines and electrical power are down. * We are purchasing a number of portable panic alarms that have a direct connection to the police department, for use in events that are not held in the
* We are planning congregation-wide training and subsequent drills so that we all will be better prepared in cases of emergency. * We are updating our requirements for major events so that security will become a standard lineitem in all planning. * We will be keeping the sanctuary doors on State Street locked during services unless specific security arrangements have been made. Appropriate signage will be displayed on the State Street doors directing both Temple members and guests to use the fobprotected Court Street entrance. Visitors to the area will have the ability to ring the doorbell to request admission to the services, with a video camera in place to relay their image to an assigned person. * As part of an overall technology update, we are planning an update of our website to keep information about events and other types of sensitive information behind a firewall that is only accessible to Temple members. * A Security Fund has been established to help offset the additional security expenditures which were not in our budget for the year. Finally, we need the help of congregants with expertise in the security arena to meet with the board and discuss additional steps that we might take. David Bachrach

Shalom Everyone and Happy December! I hope you all had a happy and meaningful Thanksgiving. This year I gave thanks for my lovely students and their parents, my amazing fellow teachers, and our wonderful temple community. The Hebrew School was quite busy this past month despite having had many days off due to Veteran’s Day and the Thanksgiving break. Here are a few of the highlights from November: •
On Sunday, November 4, the 6th and 7th graders attended a Brotherhood sponsored presentation by Dr. Nicole Ruane on the topic of “Pigs and Paternity: Some Thoughts on Food Impurities and Their Significance.”
•
On Wednesday, November 7, we had a fire drill.
•
On Wednesday, November 14, the children had the day off so that the teachers could attend an ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) training. We hope and pray that we will never have to use our newly acquired knowledge, but we certainly are grateful to the officers from the Portsmouth police department for making sure that we are prepared in case of an emergency.
On Sunday, November 18, every corner of the synagogue was buzzing with activity!

•
Sefer b’Sakeet: The Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders enjoyed books in the library with the lovely Margie Fisher!
•
Music with Morah Neshama a.k.a. Elissa Kaplan Senter: All the grades had music: Chanukah songs, Hebrew songs, and more!
•
Listening Sessions: After meeting with adults in the morning, the Rabbi Search Committee met with 4th - 7th graders and our madrichim (classroom assistants). We were very impressed by the thoughtful comments the children made, as they were asked what qualities they wanted to see in their next rabbi, and what questions we
Students share their opinions with the Rabbi Search Committee
should ask the candidates during their interviews. They truly understood the importance of this session, and appreciated the fact that we valued their opinions. •
Coming up this month: Limmud conference in Boston for the teachers, Cooking (sufganiot, rugelach) with Laura Sher, Breakfast with Rabbi Ira for Grades 2 and 7, Music with Morah Neshama for all grades, and a bnei mitzvah planning meeting for parents of 6th Grade students on Sunday, December 16.
•
On Sunday, December 9, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., we will celebrate the 7th day of Chanukah in the Social Hall. All are invited! Bring your hanukkiot, bring your appetite! We will light candles, spin dreidels and eat latkes that the Brotherhood will fry for us that morning!
As always, please feel free to call or email me at 603-969-2984 or egt9@aol.com with any questions or comments. Happy Hanukkah! L’Shalom, Elian Tackeff, Head of School

Ritual Committee
Tzedakah Committee
We’ve had a lot of snow early which means it’s Kislev and time for our Chanukah celebration. Put Sunday night December 9 on your calendar for the Chanukah Community Candle Lighting and Prayer for Peace. It starts at 5:00 p.m. with candle lighting of the Hands of Hope menorah in the courtyard followed by light refreshments in the Shmoozatorium. Come and bring a friend. There will also be candle lighting and singing with Rabbi Ira Korinow, Monday through Thursday evenings before his Learn Hebrew in Less than a Week class.
The Tzedakah Committee is always looking for people in our community who could use a little financial assistance.
B’shalom, David Olken
We have money that could help with groceries or other expenses. If you know of anyone that could use a little support, please let the rabbi know and we will follow up. Please remember that confidentiality will be strictly maintained. The Tzedakah Committee also allocates funds to local, national, and international organizations in need.
Adult Education Committee The Fall film, Theodore Bikel in the Shoes of Shalom Aleichem, was a great success. We had a chapel full of people. If you would like to watch this wonderful film at home, you can check it out from our temple library. A copy is also available for classroom use. The stories and the music combine to make this documentary a real hit. In the Spring we will present another Sunday afternoon film. Thank you to the Cultural Endowment Fund committee for supporting this event.

November highlights from the Early Learning Center: We had new math skill activities (counting 1 - 10, 1 - 20, and 1 30), and new practical life skill tasks using scoops, tongs, sorting, and listening. We practiced the Tammy Labonté upper and lower case letter “L.” Director, ELC Students worked on a new skills packet and explored the building materials in the block area. One rainy Friday when we couldn’t go outside, we played with shaving cream using liquid water colors and playdough tools. We had fun with the new sensory feel and making the shaving cream a different color – but we did get a bit messy and a few of us had to change shirts. It’s all worth it for the fun and laughter!
Laura, who substitute-taught for a couple of days. Field trips included Strawbery Banke and the Portsmouth Fire Department – Station 1. A fire fighter came here as well to conduct a building-wide fire drill. Students made a thank you card to express their gratitude for the fire fighters who keep us safe. At music enrichment with Miss Marissa, the students learned new songs, and used shakers, scarves, and a lollipop drum. We practiced waiting, saying hello in different ways, and naming parts of the body. Teachers are also enjoying taking class photos with a new tablet, purchased for the preschool by the Rabbi David Rafael Senter Memorial Fund. Shalom, Tammy & Elian
We have mainly focused this month on thanks and giving. What does it mean to be thankful and who and what are we thankful for? We also thought about giving - how do we give back to show our appreciation? We read books and discussed this topic, and then put it into action, collecting items for a food basket to share with a Temple family. The children were delighted to reunite with Miss

No Ordinary Leaves for Temple Israel: Part I In New England, trees grow leaves in the spring and shed them in the fall. But what if there were leaves that would never change and always retain their beauty? Temple Israel has those special leaves! On our sanctuary’s wall is an elegant wooden Tree of Life panel. Its carved leaves turn gold and silver as metal leaf plaques are applied to the wooden shapes. This impressive work of art was designed and executed by award-winning Portsmouth woodworker Jeff Cooper. The leaves on the Tree of Life are inscribed with messages of love, gratitude, happiness and sorrow commemorating birthdays, bar and bat mitzvahs, graduations, friendships, the passing of loved ones and more. You might be surprised to know that the tree is not complete! The tree awaits additional leaves to reach its full glory. There are over 100 opportunities for you to add a message to celebrate or commemorate someone in your life. A leaf can be purchased for $180. Together let’s bring out the full beauty of Temple Israel’s tree! To learn more, contact the Temple Israel office… Part II: Happily, there is another Tree of Life that was located in Temple Israel Dover. In the next few months when that Tree puts down roots in our Portsmouth building, there will opportunities to inscribe the gold and silver leaves on that tree too. Watch the Doorpost for an update.

“From Bimah to Broadway” Benefit Concert - Save the Date! Temple Israel of Portsmouth, NH invites you to a very special musical performance on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 7pm in the main sanctuary. The concert features two talented and uplifting performers, each a storied cantor and musician: Cantor Shira Nafshi from Concord, NH, and Cantor Micah Morgovsky, who is visiting us from Temple Sinai in Stamford, CT. These two remarkable cantors studied together at the Hebrew Union College School of Sacred Music and will perform together for the first time ever at this concert. In addition to their accomplished cantorial careers and mastery over several musical instruments, each of these cantors has also chosen a rabbi as a life partner, is a devoted parent, and enjoys rich and diverse passions: Shira can be found around horses as a rider, trainer, instructor, and farrier; Micah is a certified Zentangle teacher, miniature enthusiast, and Broadway fanatic. Please plan to join us as they offer an evening of inspiration and joy encompassing both Jewish tradition and modern life: a concert that will take us on a musical journey from Bimah to Broadway. The program will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. with havdalah followed by the concert. Attendees are also invited to enjoy dessert and discussion in the downstairs social hall immediately following the performance. All proceeds will benefit the Temple Israel Portsmouth Musical Enrichment Fund.
