PILE GRIPPER - VESSEL INNOVATION SEAMADE OWF - 2019 The monopile gripper, initially deployed on the Seamade Offshore Wind Farm, enables DEME’s dedicated offshore wind vessel Innovation to install monopile foundations all year round, at record speed. TWD engineers succeeded in developing a unique pile gripper, which excels in versatility and piling accuracy. The revolutionary ‘pendulum design’ has the gripper ring suspended in tension rods, resulting in such a logical and optimal load path that the systems’ stiffness could be maximized while keeping the overall gripper weight down. The unique combination of gripper stiffness with the slenderness of the construction, enables DEME to maximize the useful pay-load on their jack-up. Together with the adjustable and skiddable seafastening and upend tool design, TWD managed to transform HLV Innovation in a true monopile installation machine.

FLANGE LIFTING TOOL EAST ANGLIA ONE - 2018

TWD developed a Flange Lifting Tool that enables clients to install the next generation wind turbine foundations. The Lifting Tool is light weight and can lift up to 1600 tonne. The design of the tool can be scaled up and tailored to the maximum crane capacity available. Other specific needs, such as tuggerline attachments, can be incorporated in the base design of the tool. Being fully remote controlled, it ensures a safe and easy installation, without the need of crew accessing the top of the foundation. The Flange Lifting Tool is designed with operational safety, speed and redundancy as main objectives.

As a company with many young professionals, starting Engineers get a lot of responsibilities but there is always a technical advisor who can answer any of my questions. This is one of the things I appreciate most about TWD, and also one of the reasons why I can learn and build on my experience.

Sometimes my work on the gripper gets interrupted by other tasks. I am very interested in making concepts and therefore get to work on them. The concept I am currently working on is for a tool to place sheet piles in the North of Canada. A team of three, consisting of a Designer, another Engineer, and myself, discussed

INNOVATION AWARD MCCE EXPO 2017

WALKING PILING GATE DOVER - 2017 Port of Dover contracted Volkerstevin UK to execute the engineering and construction of the Port’s major Western Docks Revival scheme. The project involves driving over 700 steel tubular piles for the construction of two new quay walls, a marina curve and a marina pier. TWD assisted Volkerstevin UK with the structural and mechanical design of this bespoke piling solution. The gates, clamped on the previously installed piles, are equipped with hydraulic roller boxes to guide the piles accurately in position. After driving a pile, the gate skids forward independently from the crane and hydraulically adjusts its position to prepare for the next pile. Repositioning without the need of the crane and levelling of the piling gate significantly shortens the operational time for each pile, as it can be achieved parallel to upending and pitching of a new pile. This resulted in installing piles three times faster than traditional methods.

Events: Workshops, Trainings, etc.

Development is one of the pillars of TWD. According to our vision the professional and personal growth of employees is very important to not only ensure that all projects are engineered on a high level, but also to broaden each person’s knowledge.

CAISSON INSTALLATION NADOR MOROCCO - 2019 The consortium STFA-SGTM-JDN is constructing the new port of Nador West, Morocco. A total of 253 caissons, weighing up to 9000 tons, are currently being fabricated. Caissons are big concrete watertight structures. They are installed using a semi-submersible barge for the construction of 2 breakwaters, petroleum stations and a container terminal. Our marine engineering department prepared the installation procedure encompassing every step of the operation: the loading of each caisson on the semi-submersible barge, towage, submergence to 20m below sea level, and final installation. TWD also advised on workable seastates for the operations and provided the required on-site engineering and operational guidance in Morocco. The structural design of the grillage and internal vessel reinforcement, to spread the weight of the 9.000t caissons reinforcements, was performed by TWD as well.

MOTION COMPENSATED PILE GRIPPER TWD INNOVATIONS -2019 Back in 2014, this shift towards floating monopile installation was already glooming at the horizon and inspired TWD and Barge Master to launch their Motion Compensated Pile Gripper concept. This innovative gripper is designed to compensate the horizontal vessel motions occurring at higher sea-states, allowing floating vessels to install monopiles with a similar workability as their jacked-up counterparts. Being able to install XL monopiles with a floating vessel reduces the cost of monopile installations up to 40%. After 5 years of extensive research and development, TWD has successfully tackled the various challenges related to the different operational stages of floating monopile installations. TWD worked closely together with market parties and the support of RVO to develop the required know-how on hydrodynamics, motion control, DP stability and mechanical design of pile grippers.

“The Motion Compensated Pile Gripper is one of the most challenging and inspiring projects we work on.
