FRIDAY 13TH DECEMBER VIEWING FROM 7.30PM AUCTION STARTS AT 8.30PM WWW.SMILEBRITANNIA.ORG

IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE LONDON WESTBANK GALLERY SUPPORTING TEMWA, LAST NIGHT A DJ SAVED MY LIFE & THE SMILE BRITANNIA PROJECT

SMILE BRITANNIA London Westbank Gallery is proud to announce Smile Britannia, a charity art auction-taking place at the House of Commons on Friday 13 December 2013. The charity art project launched by the Notting Hill based gallery is in collaboration with the Last Night A DJ Saved My Life Foundation and Temwa. A collection of contemporary artists including Nick Walker, David Walker, Inkie, Ryan Callanan aka RYCA and Mau Mau have created and donated unique artworks encompassing the theme of Smile Britannia. The idea for the auction originated from the Last Night A DJ Saved My Life Foundation’s charitable initiative House the House created by London Westbank Gallery and hosted by MP Mike Weatherley in March this year. Winners of this national DJ competition received over £25,000 in music production courses and musical equipment, with the overall winner playing a historic set in the House of Commons with support from Fatboy Slim. Weatherley MP represents Hove and Portslade and is the Prime Minister’s advisor on Intellectual Property. He has a background of working in the music and film industries before being elected in 2010. To raise awareness about the importance of the music, film and creative industries to the UK economy, and the role IP has in ensuring we remain a creative nation, he started three competitions with the ‘Rock The House’ one now being the largest competition in Parliament. Mike said “The ‘House The House’ part of the ‘three package’ awareness competitions extends the message about the importance of protecting our creative industries to yet another important demographic Parliamentarians should be engaging with. I am delighted the Charity ‘Last Night a DJ Saved My Life’ is building upon the success earlier in the year and look forward to an exciting 2014 ‘House The House’. For more details on the competitions in the ‘three package’ set please go to www.rockthehousehoc.com , www.filmthehouse.com, www.housethehouse.org Mike would finally and, most importantly like to extend a HUGE thanks to all those who have supported the Smile Britannia project. This is so important with its funding pot for young creative artists & others in need.”

THANK YOU. With special thanks to Project Audio for providing the sound and lighting equipment and to Hudsons House for hosting the after party. We would also like to thank Jake Davis Design for donating their time and talent to designing the catalogue, to Ripe Digital for the print, Gary Luke for web development, Spiros and all at Cyberdog. TEMWA Founded at the end of 2003, Temwa is a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) that supports communities in improving health education services, agriculture, forestry, micro-finance, skills training and schools in a remote area of rural northern Malawi. Nkhata Bay North is a network of 89 villages with a population of 39, 000 people. Temwa is unique in being led by an entirely African team in Malawi, which puts the community at the centre of all it does. Temwa has strong links with the urban art scene and has been supported by a wealth of talented artists since its conception in 2003, annual art events called ‘Art For Africa’ are held in aid of Temwa in Bristol. Over the last 10 years Temwa has grown and developed alongside the urban art scene. Artists has become established on a world-wide scale, and Temwa’s projects have expanded to help tens of thousands of people dramatically improve their lives. The kindness, generosity and dedication of these artists has enabled Temwa to go from strength to strength. Temwa works to fight poverty, hunger and disease. Whilst our projects aim to benefit every member of the communities we serve, we focus on specifically reaching vulnerable families; those affected by HIV & AIDS, female- or child headed households, or families hosting orphans. Temwa has grown organically from the needs identified by the communities we serve. This has resulted in a range of holistic and interconnected projects covering different programme areas including agriculture, skills and entrepreneurial training, health education and schools support. The communities of Nkhata Bay North live with limited electricity, no running water and high levels of HIV & AIDS. With impassable muddy roads in the rainy season and a ferry that only arrives once a week, the Malawian government has admitted that these people’s needs are being neglected. With many other NGOs refusing to work there due its poor accessibility, Temwa remains the only organisation serving the needs of many of these areas. We train villagers to grow a variety of vegetables and fruit which has resulted in child malnutrition in this area reducing by 77%.,across 2000 households. We have planted over 300,000 trees to combat the devastating effects of deforestation. We have provided 24,000 people with HIV tests and work to combat the stigma surrounding the disease. We build school blocks and have funded 50 students through their secondary school education to date. 2013 marks Temwa’s 10th Anniversary, a huge milestone for the organisation. We are delighted that many of the artists who were involved in our first art auction 10 years ago will be contributing to the Smile Britannia collection tonight. LOT NO: 7 ARTIST: China Mike & Andy Council Collaboration TITLE OF WORK: Megatherium DIMENSIONS: 60 x 75 MEDIUM: Acrylic on canvas ESTIMATED VALUE: ÂŁ700 to ÂŁ900 My paintings are a celebration of mark making, colour and the impulses of creative process. Regardless of the subject matter I am always trying to capture a sense of spontaneity and honesty through mark making, I try not to concern myself with the artifice of beauty, instead allowing colour and form through creative reaction to produce their own aesthetic quality, one that feels less forced, deliberate or artificial. My work largely focuses on figurative motifs but I often try to subvert the natural familiarity of any subject matter with a shroud of ambiguity to create a sense of mystery or uneasiness. After a drawing of the turnip fetched $50 in a friends junk shop, Butch also began his artistic career. Butch's artistic spirit sees him apply his talents to a number of different modes and mediums, and he calls his specific genre of work “intertwangelism” - an ism of his own creation. Rowan’s tenacious use of bright colours is matched by his unorthodox choice of canvas; wood. His focus is women, capturing their strength and power whilst maintaining the delicateness of their femininity. The work is full of texture with splatter, drips and layering complimenting the depth of his artistic subjects. His work has also been shown internationally, from New York to Amsterdam to Shanghai. LOT NO: 17 ARTIST: Jim Vision TITLE OF WORK: Triumphs of Britannia DIMENSIONS: 300 x 150 x 4 MEDIUM: Spray paint on canvas ESTIMATED VALUE: £2,500 - £4,000 Jim “Probs” Vision is driven by a passion to obliterate white walls working fluidly and instinctively; his samurai style ‘mark making’ enabling him to power through the production of huge walls. A walk through the East end of London is living proof of the fruits of Jim’s labour, adorning street corners with an eye-catching and unique style. It takes an aesthetic born of Marvel, 2000AD and heavy metal and throws it kicking and screaming into a stylistic blender with John Martin-esque apocalyptic vision. The result is something wholly inspiring and undoubtedly EndoftheLine. He has also worked collaboratively with comic book heroes including Siku, Ashley Wood, Com.X and Simon Bisley. You can bid on this piece in person, by phone or by placing a reserve bid. To arrange this email charlotte@londonwestbank.com

Pulling influence from popular culture, the natural world and religious iconography, she has been exhibiting her work throughout the UK and internationally since 2008.Growing up in a small Cotswold town instilled a ‘cohabitation’ with nature that has never really left Gemma. She is fascinated by the adaptation of nature within urban landscapes, especially ornithology...and believes if we focus on ideals of beauty, money and power we can easily forget our coexistence with the rest of the planet. LOT NO: 19 ARTIST: Dan Kitchener TITLE OF WORK: Rushhour DIMENSIONS: 110 x 140 MEDIUM: Acrylic and spray on canvas ESTIMATED VALUE: £2,000 – £3,000 Passionate about his ‘Urban Impressionism’ technique, Dan Kitchener explores light, and its effects on everyday scenes and landscapes. With his electric palette, his ‘spontaneous’ reactions create an intuitive often evocative ‘mood’ of a scene, rather than an attempt to replicate its actual 'appearance' in life. Having proudly worked with Sir Paul McCartney, Kylie, Calvin Harris, Lenny Kravitz, The Prodigy and a host of other artists and stars, Dan’s work spans across all media and is followed and collected all over the world, from America, Australia, Japan and Europe. Constantly pushing the boundaries, this artist duo has developed a unique style which is equally captivating on walls as it in on canvas. Staying true to their form, Snik hand cuts up to nine layers at a time, working with different mediums, techniques, paints and varnishes. Regardless of size, the level of detail is insane, and use of colours and forms, inspirational. Showing in Galleries, shows and forums across the globe, they had their inaugural solo show in 2011, and now has a serious following of admirers and collectors worldwide. What started with an absurd sticker created in 1989 has since evolved into a worldwide street art campaign, as well as an acclaimed body of fine art. The Obey Giant campaign takes cues from popular culture, commercial marketing and political messaging. The ideology and iconography of Fairey’s work focuses the self-empowerment of those who refuse to be manipulated by the machine of manufactured consent. With biting sarcasm verging on reverse psychology, he goads viewers, using the imperative ‘OBEY’ to take head of the propagandists out to bend the world to their agenda's. Fairey’s art reached a new height of prominence in 2008 when his ‘hope’ portrait of Barack Obama became the iconic image of the presidential campaign and helped inspire an unprecedented political movement. From the starting point of the emblematic visual sign, Ryan began a series of works using the smiley face synonymous with acid house rave culture in the 1980s. Working in bas-relief, this iconic motif was recontextualised by rendering it in material and style usually associated with traditional pub signs - gold inlay and black lacquered background. Ryan chose symbols for their accessibility, this is art that everyone can enjoy and understand. Ryan draws on contemporary popular culture in an often refreshingly comic and accessible way.
