ATTIC BAR

ART FOR AFRICA 2018 Art for Africa is Bristol’s annual art auction in aid of Temwa. Temwa is a Bristol-based charity working in hard-to-reach areas of northern Malawi to help people become self-reliant and transform their own communities. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world and the remoteness of the communities that we work with makes the daily challenges they face to survive even harder. Over the last 15 years, artwork has been generously contributed to Art for Africa by some of the UK’s finest urban and contemporary artists, alongside budding African artists from Malawi. The auction provides vital funds to enable us to continue our work. The first art auction in aid of Temwa was held at the Tobacco Factory in August 2003, and since then the auctions have gone from strength to strength. We cannot thank the talented artists enough for their support and the time they invest into the event. To celebrate our 15th birthday, we’re bringing you kids art workshops led by the amazing team from Paintsmiths - book online now at temwa.org; street food including wood-fired pizzas and noodles, and live painting from the likes of MauMau, 3DOM and Lokey. The auction includes live art pieces and starts at 8pm, so come and grab a pint and a statement piece for your home. Finally, enjoy the after party till late with DJs Mr Woodnote and Lil Rhys, also ft. DJs in Flat Caps. Since 2003, Art for Africa Bristol has raised raised £95,000. We have also held Art for Africa events in London and Paris, which have raised a combined total of £60,000. We are excited about seeing the impact Art for Africa will continue to have in the future. A big thank you for coming and supporting Temwa by bidding, soaking up the atmosphere and bringing friends; we hope you enjoy it. Special thanks go to our Art for Africa team - all the artists, DJs, sponsors and volunteers who work hard to make this event possible; we could not be more appreciative of the effort and dedication that all involved have put in to ensure its success.

TEMWA Temwa has been working in a remote rural area of northern Malawi – Nkhata Bay North – since 2003. The isolated communities are only accessible by one dirt road that is often impassable due to the rain. This means that they receive little government support and face regular food shortages and floods; they have no electricity, high rates of HIV and AIDs, limited education or employment opportunities, and poor healthcare. Temwa has grown organically from the needs identified by the communities we serve. We work in partnership with local people to run holistic and interlinked projects in Sustainable Forestry, Agriculture, Health and Education. Community members are trained to implement the projects with oversight and support from the team in Malawi, giving the communities ownership and making it more likely for the projects to continue beyond Temwa’s support. Our work gives households the resources and skills they need to support themselves long-term. Essentially, we want to work ourselves out of a job.

WATER IS LIFE: GOODSON’S STORY

In 2017, Temwa introduced a water, sanitation and health (WASH) programme to stop people dying from preventable waterborne diseases. Training and water filters equip households to access safe water. Every year, the trial village of Bweteka had cholera outbreaks, but since receiving water filters there have been no cases of cholera and an 85% reduction in waterborne diseases. Goodson, a resident of Bweteka, whose own baby died of Diarrhoea before the water filters were introduced to his village said..

The last 15 years have seen immense transformation in Nkhata Bay North; the impact of Temwa’s work has gone beyond the statistics above. Housing has improved with tin roofs, more innovative solutions are being produced, and the communities have become more resilient to food shortages and the emerging challenges of climate change. However, there is so much more that needs to be done: improvement in girls’ education, agricultural irrigation, reforesting river banks, accessing markets and expanding the water programme are all immediate challenges for the communities to overcome.

LOT NUMBER: 17 ARTIST: MINTO TITLE: SCRATCH N’ SNIFF 1 DIMENSIONS: 25.5CM X 25.5CM MEDIUM: CANVAS ESTIMATED VALUE: £250 Minto began life in Edinburgh before moving to central Bristol during the early 80’s and started painting in the late eighties. His artistic influences come from the early pioneers of global graffiti, Anime, Retro Synthwave and abstracted artforms. ‘MINTO’ has developed a personal painting style combining elements of abstract and impressionist theory with freestlye graffiti, that employs imagination and instinct without the use of preliminary sketches. “To freestyle is to learn at speed and not to worry about over or underworking a piece” he says. “I instinctively make marks of varying speed well into the piece, leading to a more considered, deliberate approach towards the end. Understanding the relationship between neighbouring tones and exploiting the frequent accidents that occur help me to steer the piece. People often come up with many different interpretations of my work when they examine it - and I hope each piece inspires playful, energetic discussion between them all. Enjoyment of the intrigue that this style offers, I think, is the key to its longevity.”

LOT NUMBER: 18 ARTIST: MINTO TITLE: SCRATCH N’ SNIFF 2 DIMENSIONS: 25.5CM X 25.5CM MEDIUM: CANVAS ESTIMATED VALUE: £250

LOT NUMBER: 19 ARTIST: MR JAGO TITLE: NKHATA HEAD DIMENSIONS: 40CM X 40CM MEDIUM: OIL ON CANVAS BOARD ESTIMATED VALUE: £650 Living and working in Bristol, Mr Jago (Duncan Jago) is often described as a veteran of urban art. Growing up in the small village of Eye, Suffolk, Mr Jago had an intense interest in graffiti and comic books, which led him to study illustration at the University of the West of England. It was there that Mr Jago would meet the other members of what would become the now renowned Scrawl Collective. Following immediate commercial success, which led to collaborations with some of the world’s biggest international brands, Mr Jago’s early, doodle-derived mark making evolved, taking the idioms of spray painting to a level of sophistication rarely seen in the medium. Indeed, there is maturity and depth in Mr Jago’s use of colour that hints at the mineral traces left by geological time, or the complex nebulae of Deep Space revealed by Hubble’s keen eye. Most recently, Mr Jago’s work has further evolved through the introduction of oil and impasto techniques, confounding Mr Jago’s classification as either an urban or a fine artist. Mr Jago’s work has been exhibited extensively worldwide and is held in both public and private collections.

LOT NUMBER: 22 ARTIST: AMY V TITLE: BECALMED DIMENSIONS: 60CM X 90CM MEDIUM: ACRYLIC ON CANVAS ESTIMATED VALUE: £280 Amy’s vibrant acrylic paintings are evocative of the countries where she has lived and her experiences along the way. Notably the vivacious art scene in Barcelona and the intensity of India have fuelled her passion for colour. In Australia, and later Barcelona, she was mentored by emerging artist Mirabela Varga, with whom she shares a delight in the brilliance and plastic qualities of acrylic paint. Her work has been influenced by the light and bustle of Spain with a passing nod to Gaudi’s multi-coloured mosaics, by city lights in London and Bristol, and by the waters of the Solent. She works spontaneously and experiments with different techniques and processes, resulting in a richly textured and interesting paint surface to enhance an arresting image. Only occasionally does her work verge on the representational.

LOT NUMBER: 23 ARTIST: CLAIRE MARIE DIAZ TITLE: UNTITLED DARK DIMENSIONS: 61 X 90CM MEDIUM: OIL ON CANVAS ESTIMATED VALUE: £130-£150 “My focus over the last few years has centered on painting and psychoanalysis, and the interaction between these two activities.” Donald Winnicott, a founder member of the Independent Tradition in psychoanalysis says: “It is in playing, and only in playing that the individual child or adult is able to be creative and to use the whole personality, and it is only in being creative that the individual discovers the self. My painting has allowed me to recover a capacity for play, lost since childhood, and allowed my creativity an expression in my paintings. “I painted for many years exclusively in oils, until recently when I started playing with inks and discovered that the vibrancy and subtlety of the colours and the fluidity of the materials allow evocative yet abstract images to emerge onto the canvas that are exciting and satisfying. “I prefer to leave my paintings open to the understanding and interpretation of each individual person who looks at them. It is the creativity of the other, the viewer, I want to provoke rather than offer something finished and complete in itself.”

LOT NUMBER: 24 ARTIST: CLAIRE MARIE DIAZ TITLE: UNTITLED DIMENSIONS: 80CMX30CM MEDIUM: ACRYLIC ON CANVAS ESTIMATED VALUE: £130-£150

LOT NUMBER: 25 ARTIST: GILES BARWICK TITLE: FRUSTRATION DIMENSIONS: 50CM X 50CM MEDIUM: MIXED MEDIA ON CANVAS ESTIMATED VALUE: £300 Giles is a Bristol (UK) based fine artist. He first studied Graphic Design, and following a short course at St Ives School of Art he applied to the University of West of England (UWE) to study Fine Art. It was here he was awarded the “Innes Wilken Art in Architecture” prize. Since gaining his BA, Giles has continued to develop his innovative techniques and shrewd use of colours within his work. Painting and drawing have been integral to Giles’ life. Heavily influenced by the early 80s, Giles been painting and doodling his entire life. As an artist, he currently produces 2D abstract work. His art is a means of selfexpression and therapy, yet the resulting angst-ridden canvases are bright and lively in nature. The techniques are varied and now adopt an illustrative style in favour of the linear markings of his earlier works. The rough brush strokes, dribbles and smears are achieved with the use of acrylics, pens and the odd spray paint.

LOT NUMBER: 26 ARTIST: KELLIE SCHOFIELD TITLE: ODE DIMENSIONS: 61CM X 122CM MEDIUM: MIXED MEDIUM ON CANVAS ESTIMATED VALUE: ÂŁ300 Recently I have had artwork exhibited at Saatchi gallery in London and New York. Born in England, on the Isle of Wight, I have had no formal training but have instead taken the opportunity to attend classes whenever I got the chance. I have always enjoyed creating art in various forms and have experimented with ceramics, textiles and glass fusing in the past, alongside painting with watercolours and soft pastels before settling on acrylic paints. Here in Brittany where I have lived now for over ten years, I bought my first canvases, and started to concentrate purely on painting. Now I paint for hours at a time, and I feel I am becoming an artist, evolving into one without ever having made a conscious decision to make this my career. Mostly I paint in an abstract style, organic abstracts, and abstract landscapes. I paint freely, with no fixed idea, and no aim other than to create something beautiful. I am drawn to colours and the paint itself and love to explore and experiment with various media and techniques. On the internet, I sell mostly here on Artfinder, and my artwork has sold to many different countries worldwide, but locally, I exhibit at art markets, and sometimes in restaurants. I am always on the lookout for new opportunities and fresh ideas. I find I am inspired by everything and everybody, and am lucky enough to be supported and encouraged by artist friends both locally in Brittany, and globally via the internet.

LOT NUMBER: 40 ARTIST: TOASTER TITLE: TOASTER LOVE (GOLD) DIMENSIONS: 30CM X 30CM MEDIUM: SPRAY PAINT ON CANVAS ESTIMATED VALUE: £200 For 15 years, three people have placed their Toaster image all over the world. In the form of stencils and stickers, the streets of nearly every major city on the planet have been decorated with this now conic motif. A project conceived long before the term ‘street art’ was born, the Toaster indeed transcends the street, also appearing on flags in football stadiums, cricket grounds and music festivals. Now the Toaster project is pushed forward by one of the original three people. He continues to stencil and paste the Toaster across the world in its original form but also pushing it into abstracted and broken down shapes.

LOT NUMBER: 41 ARTIST: WILL BARRAS TITLE: ON THE MOVE DIMENSIONS: 24CM X 32CM MEDIUM: INK ON WATERCOLOUR PAPER ESTIMATED VALUE: £80-100 Will became one of a new crop of young artists working within Bristol’s world-renowned street art scene. This led to Will appearing in the book Scrawl, and becoming a founding member of the Scrawl collective. Scrawl, originally published in 1999, was a seminal book documenting a new movement in street art, graphics and illustration. “There is a fluidity and energy in Will’s work that, although constantly changing, has always existed in a world entirely of his own making. His figures appear to be in a state of perpetual metamorphosis – caught for a brief moment between one manifestation and the next, always at the mercy of the swirling forces that surround them. From his early scanned and reworked doodles through to his recent rich, mixed media work, Will has mastered every medium with a dynamism constant in all his work.” Felix Braun, author of Children of the Can.

Keith mostly paints scenes from the streets that inspired him in the first place – distinctive buildings, important moments in time and the individuals that make up what is the essence of the city of Bristol

Thom donates artwork to Temwa every year; he gives us one piece of artwork to sell for Temwa and one piece of artwork to raise money for his family.

ESTIMATED VALUE: £65 South African-born Neil Thomas Roberts is now a Bristol-based visual artist that mainly specialises in oils. His key themes generally revolve around the surreal directly influenced by the arcane, resonating with symbolic energy. Neil has been commonly described as an idea factory always twisting concepts into pictorial harmonies.

LOT NUMBER: 56 ARTIST: ANDREW COLWILL TITLE: A BOWL OF RICE DIMENSIONS: 180CM X 60CM MEDIUM: ACRYLIC ON BOARD ESTIMATED VALUE: £1,500 Andrew is one of the original Bristol street artists (he was painting on walls when you could only buy spray paint in garages). He is both the alpha and the omega of street art - his work having recently been described as ‘the next wave in street art - a movement of using fine art techniques portraying a powerful environmental or political message’. This can be seen in his recent Arctic Scream at last year’s Upfest, which received acclaim from art bloggers and critics alike. His previous piece for Upfest was named in the top 70 street art pieces in the UK from Getty Images. For him, the street art scene stands for a new revolution like the impressionists did at the turn of the twentieth century - “when ordinary people could at last express themselves and art wasn’t solely for the landowners and the church.” Whether on walls or on canvas, his work is fine art with a twist, and is simply stunning.

LOT NUMBER: 57 ARTIST: MASAI TITLE: PRAIRE MBWA-ALITNGA HAISI (WANTED ALIVE NOT DEAD) DIMENSIONS: 29 X 34 CM MEDIUM: ACRYLIC & BITUMEN ON RECLAIMED WOOD ESTIMATED VALUE: £300 I grew up living above my parents’ restaurant, which meant that I didn’t get a lot of time to hang out with my Dad but when he finished service I would join him in the studio to do my art homework. When he wasn’t being a chef, his other passion for painting took over. I guess it was then that my love for painting really started to flourish. I can’t say that I enjoyed education too much, so when I realised that I could study art at university I pursued that and acquired a degree in Falmouth, Cornwall. I have been living in London since 2010 and fulfilling this idea of making an income from my creativity. I maintain a fairly balanced combination of painting in the studio and painting murals in the public domain. I get huge enjoyment from both and embrace the influences that both practices have on each other.

LOT NUMBER: 61 ARTIST: 0RRIBLE TITLE: I SEE YOU DIMENSIONS: 64X64CM MEDIUM: 1/1 UNIQUE ONE OFF. 3 LAYERS SPRAY PAINTED EYES FINISHED IN DIAMOND DUST ESTIMATED VALUE: £400 0rrible, real name Jon Horrell, is an artist based in the rolling countryside of Devon. 0rrible has been making his mark since an early age growing up in Plymouth, exploring areas of urban decay whilst being heavily immersed in the skateboarding and drum n bass counter-culture of the late nineties into the 21st century – all heavy influences on his work today. Living and working just outside Salcombe, it is here where he feels most at home and how his signature style of stencil art has emerged. 0rrible has a deep-rooted love for nature and animals and this is portrayed beautifully throughout his collection of works, which can be in the form of a street paste up, canvas, or studio screen print. Operating from a 500-year-old farmhouse in his pigsty studio with nesting owls, swallows and bats overhead, he bases his art on his local natural surroundings but with the element and execution of street art and graffiti of the city, a far cry from the busy sprawling streets of London or Amsterdam where his street art can be found. 0rrible is currently showcasing his work with Jealous Gallery in Shoreditch, London and Rise Gallery in Croydon, London, as well as The Drang Gallery in Salcombe, Devon.

LOT NUMBER: 63 ARTIST: LEMAK TITLE: GANESH DIMENSIONS: 58CMX42CM MEDIUM: STENCIL ON BOARD ESTIMATED VALUE: £250 Lemak is a self-taught urban street and gallery artist. Born in 1980, he is currently based in Bristol but originates from Fleetwood, UK. He was inspired to pick up a spray paint can by stencil artists such as Snik and Tank Petrol and started creating art in 2011. He is developing a signature style of his own, merging the skills of his previous trade as a joiner with his artistic talents, and now specialises in reverse stencilling on glass. The lighting elements of the art bring out different features of the work, such as the intricate patterns of tattoos, in a distinct and unique way. Much of Lemak’s art explores and captures the natural beauty caught in the eyes and expressions of the female form, while as a big sci-fi fan he uses modern technology and lighting distinctively combined to give his work a whole new perspective for the viewer. He is continually developing new techniques and is now creating artenhanced furniture under the brand name FunArtUre.

LOT NUMBER: 64 ARTIST: LOKEY TITLE: PALETTE DIMENSIONS: 30CM X 40CM MEDIUM: MIXED MEDIA ON CANVAS ESTIMATED VALUE: £150-200 Lokey was born and raised in Bristol. His passion for graffiti started in the mid 1980s through a chance meeting in a local park, breakdancing with some kids who had returned from their holiday in America with hip-hop mix tapes and photographs of graffiti. They told him he had to have a street name, a tag, and from that point on he was hooked. After playing about with a few other tags he became Lokey. He is the youngest veteran of the Bristol graffiti phenomenon, with over 20 years of experience in the once underground scene, which is now very much a part of the day-to-day lives of Bristolian people. His writing style has progressed, over the years, from simple Bubble letters in the early days, through to Wildstyle and now the 3D lettering that he is most known for. Lokey has exhibited at numerous galleries across Bristol including at the RWA, Weapon of Choice Gallery, Upfest Gallery, King of Paint, The Farm and The Emporium to name a few, and he has also exhibited as far afield as Abu Dhabi. His main love is painting on walls – the more the merrier and the bigger the better.

LOT NUMBER: 65 ARTIST: PARIS TITLE: PARIS ELECTRO ROCK 1, 2018 DIMENSIONS: 76CM X 101CM X 2CM MEDIUM: SPRAYPAINT ON CANVAS ESTIMATED VALUE: £700 Paris rose to global fame in 2011 when he worked alongside the British rock band Coldplay creating a massive piece of spray can art for the cover of their fifth studio album Mylo Xyloto (and subsequent world tours). He regularly participates in British music events, most recently creating work for the public and private areas at Glastonbury Festival 2016. His work can easily be identified by its unique combination of atmospheric colours, detailed and highly stylised line work and space-age effects.

LOT NUMBER: 66 ARTIST: PAUL MCGOWAN TITLE: GLAMOROUS GUN CLUB DIMENSIONS: 46CM X 46CM MEDIUM: HAND PRINT ESTIMATED VALUE: £500 - £700 Paul McGowan studied art at Falmouth, Winchester and Bath school of Art. His work has often created controversy and has been regularly featured in the press all around the world, including in The Guardian, The Times, The Evening Standard, Creative Review and Arena magazine, as well as on the BBC, Sky News and many more. He established himself as a fashion designer at a young age; when he was 20 he became the youngest designer to ever sell a collection to fashion house Browns, and went on to work for a variety of well-known fashion industry names, including Gianni Versace.// During his formative years at art school, he had his first exhibition in St Ives, and won the Tate Magazine Award. Since this time, he has continued to develop a strong career for his distinctive – and often political – artworks, recognised locally in 2008 when he was appointed as artist in residence at the Eden Project. His work is collected across the world and he is a serial collaborator, often producing works released under different identities.// In December 2013 and 2014, McGowan was included in London West Bank Gallery’s charity event Smile Britannia, which is staged in the Houses of Parliament and has become an annual event. The event raises vital funds for three organisations: the Smile Britannia Project, which benefits disadvantaged communities in London, the Last Night a DJ Saved My Life Foundation, and Temwa.// In 2014, McGowan also participated in London West Bank Gallery’s annual Urban in Ibiza exhibition that features artworks from the gallery’s international network of street, graffiti and contemporary artists. Addressing emotive issues, McGowan’s works often provoke strong reactions. Perhaps the most unexpected was when in June 2010 police in riot gear were sent to raid a central London gallery after one of the artworks – a fake bomb in the window – caused reports of a ‘suspicious’ device. His current work has been exhibited extensively in the UK as well as abroad.

THANK YOU Art for Africa is an important event for Temwa; not only does it bring the community together in Bristol, creating a fun atmosphere and combining this with our love for art, it also provides much needed funds to support Temwa’s projects. For everyone who has made this possible this year, and for the last 15 years, I am so grateful. I would love to mention everyone by name but here a few below I would like to specially thank. First and foremost this event would not happen without the generosity and talent of the artists who have kindly donated artwork for free - on behalf of Temwa, thank you! Secondly, all the different volunteers who work tirelessly to put on Art for Africa; they are hugely appreciated - the DJs, sponsors, designers, photographers, Temwa interns and trustees - all your hard work, energy and time is greatly appreciated. A special thank you to Sam Crossley for being an incredible and long-standing runner for Temwa. A very big thank you must also go to all the supporters who come and buy artwork - without the artists and the art buyers, the event would not be the success that it is! To the team at the Attic Bar, we are so grateful for this space. Your generosity and support is highly appreciated and the event would not be the same without this magical setting. A huge thank you goes to Jake Davies for designing this catalogue and the associated marketing materials free of charge, and for your ongoing support. Jake is an incredibly talented designer; you can see more of his work at www.jakedavisdesign.co.uk. Special thanks goes to Matt Whiteley for his incredible photography and videography skills, photographing all of the artwork and capturing the heart of this event, and so many other events. Matt is a Bristol-based professional photographer and videographer. Discover more of his work here: www.blackandwhiteley.com Last but not least, a big thank you goes to Kirsty Henderson who organised this event; Kat Lewis, who managed it on the day; and Saraphina Finch-Dean for volunteering your time to help curate and collect the art for the catalogue. Our whole team of staff in the UK and Malawi, and the community members that we work with in Malawi, are incredible people who make Temwa’s projects happen. A special mention must go to Sheena Wynne and China Mike who are celebrating their six-year anniversary on 12th May! Huge thanks to all our wonderful volunteers old and new; thanks to Dan Yeo and Rich Brady for returning to support AFA over the years. You are all legends! 2018 is a year of hope in Nkhata Bay North. After the food crises in the last few years, communities are rebuilding their lives. There is so much to do in helping them build sustainable futures, we need and value your ongoing support. Thank you for supporting Temwa and the people of Nkhata Bay North in Malawi. Jo Hook – Co-Founder & Managing Director

ITS ALL 2 MUCH It’s All 2 Much art gallery was conceived by founder Chris Logan in 2011. As an avid collector of art, he had spotted an artwork by Bristol artist Jim Starr and in the course of buying the piece he learned from the artist that he was looking for a commercial tenant for his ground floor shop on Cheltenham Road in Bristol – as a result, It’s All 2 Much art gallery opened its doors for the first time in December 2011. Bristol has been at the forefront of art for the past thirty years, primarily due to the graffiti works of Banksy ably supported by the likes of Nick Walker, 3D, Inkie, FLX and Mr Jago. A second generation including Dicy, 3Dom, SPZero76, Cheba, SPQR and Andy Council have taken up the baton and continue to transform drab urban areas into colourful murals. But as this street art is increasingly adopted into popular culture, many of these artists have transferred their creativity from concrete to canvas, a medium that is far more gallery-friendly and collectable. Residing at 11-13 Stokes Croft, it is no surprise that we talk with, and exhibit the works of, many of the street artists that Bristol is now so well-known for, but we are also able to offer our visitors examples of figurative, illustrative and abstract art. www.itsall2much.co.uk

UPFEST

The Upfest Gallery, Bedminster – Bristol’s most diverse range of original and printed contemporary art, street art and graffiti inspired artwork, also offering framing, t-shirts, POSCA markers and over 500 colours of spray paint. The gallery doubles up as Upfest HQ whilst we host The Urban Paint Festival, Europe’s largest urban arts festival attracting over 400 artists and 50,000 visitors; this year will be it’s 10th anniversary and is sure to be visually spectacular. Bristol enjoys the combination of a vibrant community of free-spirited street artists, many legal painting walls, and a very compliant local authority. This has helped Bristol to become recognised as the capital city of street art in the UK and the natural home for Upfest – Europe’s premier live street art festival. The likes of Bristol-born artists such as Banksy, Inkie and Cheo have demonstrated how urban and contemporary art can engage vast members of the general public. Upfest is now an integral part of this movement and is helping to support a new generation of urban and contemporary artists. This year’s festival will take place across the weekend of the 28rd – 30th July. The Upfest Gallery, 198 North Street, is open Tuesday to Saturday 9.30am until 5.30pm and Sunday 10am until 3pm – or visit our website at www.upfest.co.uk.
