Dave Zelenock College: Central Michigan University (2005) B.A. in Physical Education

Coaching Experience

Tennessee Tech University: Head Coach — Third Season

Central Michigan University Associate Head Coach — 2009-2012 Assistant Coach — 2007-2008 Delaware State University Assistant Coach — 2006 Northwood University Assistant Coach — 2004-2005

Dave Zelenock is in his third season at the helm of the Golden Eagle volleyball squad. On the court, Zelenock has used successful recruiting efforts to help lift the Golden Eagle program toward finding success similar to what he found in his previous positions. Following the completion of his first full recruiting class at Tech, Zelenock was proud to announce that the 2014 and 2015 Golden Eagle signing classes earned High Honorable Mention for strength of the recruiting class by PrepVolleyball.com. In the 2014 season, Zelenock led Tech to a 15-19 record, and a 9-7 record in Ohio Valley Conference play. The 9-7 was the first winning conference season since 2008. The Golden Eagles also recorded their first All-OVC athlete and All-Newcomer team member under Zelenock’s tutelage. In the summer of 2015, he saw one of his players earn a place as one of 36 athletes to participate in the U.S. Collegiate National Team (CNT) program. Zelenock has helped the Golden Eagle program continue to excel in the classroom. The Tennessee Tech volleyball team was named a recipient of the 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic award. Tech was one of nine Ohio Valley Conference teams to win the award this past year. He has also seen 21 student-athletes earn a spot on the TTU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. Thirteen athletes also made the OVC Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll

during his time, and two have earned a Medal of Honor for achieving a perfect 4.0 through both the fall and spring semesters. The Golden Eagle volleyball program has the longest streak among all teams within the TTU Athletics Department of uninterrupted semesters (30) with a team GPA exceeding 3.0, a stretch which began in fall 2000. In 2015, Zelenock was published on the national website, AthleteAssessments.com, on his success of redirecting the TTU program. Zelenock, 32, who helped reshape the landscape of Central Michigan volleyball in his six successful seasons on the Chippewa coaching staff, was named head volleyball coach at Tennessee Tech University in mid-January 2013. “The position at Tennessee Tech is really a dream job,” Zelenock said at the time. “I get to be a head coach in a conference that is competitive with the resources that it takes to win. I have a great administration supporting our program, and it is giving me the opportunity to be successful in my first college head coaching job.” A 2005 graduate of Central Michigan, Zelenock was an assistant coach at Northwood University for two years and Delaware State one season before returning to his alma mater in 2007. At Northwood, he helped the team to a 44-21 two-year record and two NCAA Tournament appearances.

GOLDEN EAGLE HEAD COACH After two seasons as assistant coach at CMU, Zelenock was promoted to associate head coach in 2009. With Zelenock on the recruiting trail, Central Michigan secured five-straight nationally ranked recruiting classes and six over eight seasons. “Dave Zelenock is an up-and-coming coach who is a proven winner,” said TTU Director of Athletics Mark Wilson. “He’s an outstanding recruiter and coach, and we are excited that he has joined the Tennessee Tech coaching staff.” “The number one thing that convinced me to come to Tennessee Tech is the people, beginning with Mark Wilson,” Zelenock said. “I want to work for someone who I want to follow, and I believe he has great vision for the department. The people are amazing, both at the university and in the community, and they make me feel comfortable. It’s a great community and I think Cookeville is a great place to raise a family.” Zelenock’s previous responsibilities at CMU included acting as the program’s recruiting coordinator and future opponent scouting. In the gym, he was in charge of outside hitter development/training. “The big change is that now I am the final say in recruiting, lineups and other aspects,” he said. “The wins and losses are in my name now, so that’s a little different.” During his six seasons at CMU, the Chippewas forged five winning seasons and a 107-78 overall record. In 2007, his first season on the staff, Zelenock’s scouting abilities helped CMU to its first 20-win season since 1985 and first postseason victory in 25 years. The Chippewas won 20 straight sets over the course of eight matches midway through the season. In 2008, the Chippewas missed their second straight 20-win season by the slimmest of margins (19-11). CMU posted its fourth straight winning season in 2009, and reached the MAC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 1996. The Chippewas tallied postseason victories over Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois to reach the semis. The 2011 CMU team ended a 33-year drought as the Chippewas won the Mid-America Conference championship and earned the school’s first trip to the NCAA Volleyball Tournament.

Individually, during his six seasons on the staff Zelenock saw seven CMU players earn all-MAC honors as well as two capture all-freshman awards. During his time as a student-athlete at CMU, Zelenock was a four-year starter for the men’s club volleyball team. He served as captain for three seasons, club president for two years and was a coach for two years. He earned his bachelor’s degree from CMU in 2005 while majoring in physical education with a minor in secondary physical science. Zelenock and his wife, Jamie, have two sons, Jacoby, 3, and, Zander Lee, born Jan. 31, 2015.

and strategic actions to meet the university’s vision. Flight Plan celebrates distinctiveness, innovation and people as it guides efforts to improve student success. He has served on statewide task forces to develop the new higher education funding formula for Tennessee and to create universal transfer pathways to provide seamless student transfers across all Tennessee public colleges and universities. Oldham previously served as provost and senior vice chancellor of academic affairs at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Freed-Hardeman University in 1980 and his doctorate in analytical chemistry from Texas A&M University in 1985. He spent a year following his graduate work as a Wellcome Research Fellow at Burroughs Wellcome Co. (Glaxo Smith-Kline) before joining the faculty at Mississippi State University in 1986. Oldham served as head of Mississippi State University’s chemistry department for five years prior to becoming MSU’s College of Arts and Sciences dean in 2001.

Along with his administrative accomplishments, Oldham has authored more than 35 peer-reviewed research articles in analytical chemistry, along with two patents and approximately 100 conference presentations. His research has been financially supported by the National Science Foundation, American Chemical Society, U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Geological Survey and private industry. He has served on a number of scholarly editorial boards and as a peer reviewer for both the NSF and National Institutes of Health. Oldham and his wife, Kari, are proud of their family, which includes three sons (Clay, Paden and Sam), a daughter (Audrey) and a daughter-in-law (Rebecca).

ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION Mark

WILSON

v Director of Athletics

University of Maine 1991

Mark Wilson raced through his first decade in his role as Director of Athletics at Tennessee Tech University — last year he completed his 11the year at the helm of the bustling department. And now he’s full-speed ahead into his next phase, continuing to provide leadership and direction to Golden Eagle athletics, staff and student-athletes. From the get-go his priority has been enhancing the ‘student-athlete’ experience, challenging them with tough schedules, improved facilities, and opportunities to develop to their fullest potential, not only in competition but in the classroom, their lives and futures. Upon his arrival at Tennessee Tech in 2004, Wilson embarked on an ambitious enhancement program to improve every facet of intercollegiate athletics at Tennessee Tech, including academic performance.

48

In the Spring of 2015, for the 13th consecutive semester Tech’s studentathletes teamed up to top 3.0 for their combined grade point average (GPA). Over the past several semesters, Golden Eagle student-athletes have posted the highest GPAs in school history. Private fundraising has enhanced facilities for TTU student-athletes, highlighted by the construction of a 25,000 square-foot Athletic Performance Center and state-of-the-art basketball offices. He initiated a new branding and standard graphic identity program for regional and national recognition of TTU athletics and under his leadership, TTU’s teams have been highly active supporting community outreach programs such as Habitat for Humanity and Mustard Seed Ranch (a local home for disadvantaged youth). Wilson’s hiring decisions have also paid off. Twenty-four Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) regular season and tournament championships have been won, along with the 2012 OVC Sportsmanship Award. The 2011 football team under Watson Brown won its first conference championship since 1975. The women’s basketball team has won two OVC championships in the last five seasons. The tennis team, under the direction of three-time OVC Coach of the Year Kenny Doyle,

has won the regular season championship three of the last four years. The Tech softball team claimed the 2015 OVC Tournament championship and advanced to NCAA play. In 2013, Wilson was named one of four winners of the Athletic Director of the Year Award for the Football Championship Subdivision, an honor selected and presented by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Wilson, 46, has been active in the Ohio Valley Conference governance structure, and has served as chair of the OVC Board of Director of Athletics and represented the OVC on the NCAA Leadership Council. Well-respected on the national scene, he is highly involved in numerous committees. Following his previous appointment on the NCAA Leadership Council, Wilson currently serves on the FCS ADA Executive Committee as First Vice President, and is serving a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee, currently acting as Chair for 2015-16. He also serves on the NCAA Football Oversight Committee. Wilson’s first 11 years as Director of Athletics at TTU have showcased his vision, energy, and enthusiasm for providing outstanding experiences for Tech’s student-athletes and fans. In addition to major improvements in Tennessee Tech’s athletics facilities, high graduation and APR rates by Golden Eagle student-athletes, and outstanding academic success,

2015 Tennessee Tech Volleyball

ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION Wilson has also cultivated excellent relationships with the campus, community and alumni. In short, Wilson has facilitated growth and excellence in all areas of TTU Athletics. Wilson also developed a strategic plan for Tech’s athletic facilities and has already seen some of those plans become reality. During the past seven years Tech has completed several construction and renovation projects to athletic facilities. In addition to the APC and the basketball office complex, projects have included a new natural grass practice field, installation of new turf in Tucker Stadium, installation of lights at the Tech soccer field, renovation of the running track, football offices, meeting rooms and locker rooms, and new lights at Tucker Stadium. Last year, Tech debuted a spectacular, new video board in Eblen Center and most recently, all new seats were installed in the arena. Additional building plans call for a new student-athlete center, an on-campus tennis center, and enhancements to Tucker Stadium. Another step achieved under Wilson’s direction has been increased fundraising and development efforts with the goal of providing the necessary facilities and resources for Tech’s student-athletes, coaches and staff. All of those accomplishments have come while the department has continued to stay focused on compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations. The most recent NCAA announcements show that all 14 of Tech’s athletic programs are comfortably above the benchmark for compliance in the Academic Progress Rate (APR). Just as important are the relationships that Wilson has developed and nurtured, including the Cookeville-Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, the student body, the campus community and the region at-large. His leadership has been instrumental in the overwhelming success in the community’s host role at Tucker Stadium for the annual Blue Cross Bowl for the TSSAA high school state championship football games. Tech has also seen growth in regional and national media exposure for

its student-athletes and coaches while his hands-on approach to marketing and branding Golden Eagle Athletics has earned increased opportunities and involvement for fans and sponsors. Some of the ideas he has implemented include the Purple Pride Caravans, a new athletics logo and branding marks that have gained nationwide recognition, and an updated and modern ticketing system. Under Wilson’s direction, Tech has introduced an enhanced digital video presence for athletics, including free live web streaming productions and a variety of additional video programs, interviews and features that give fans, alumni and supporters greater access to Golden Eagle teams, student-athletes, coaches and staff. Wilson was named Director of Athletics on July 1, 2004. He came to Tennessee Tech from a position of Associate Athletic Director at Ohio University. Prior to that, he served as the Director of Athletic Marketing for the University of Massachusetts, worked as a graduate assistant in the UMass athletic department and interned with the Northwestern University ticketing and marketing departments.

Wilson received his bachelor’s degree in 1991 from the University of Maine in physical education and health, and earned his master’s in sports management from the University of Massachusetts in 1994. Mark and his wife, Melanie have five daughters.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT The success of Tennessee Tech University’s athletic teams is tied closely to the academic progress of each student-athlete, and the academic performance of each Tech student-athlete is closely monitored by the coaching staff as well as an experienced staff in Academic Services, led by Dr. Lance Jasitt. Student-athletes are the most visible component of a university, entertaining thousands of fans, students, alumni, family and friends. Their athletic abilities and achievements are a focus for national attention, as athletic events not only bring back faithful alumni, but also serve as a welcome mat to the university for potential new students. Student-athletes devote many hours to practice, conditioning and training in an effort to be the best they can be. These hours are not required by non-athletes in the student body, and these extra demands can compete with academics for the student-athlete’s time and energy. The Tech Athletics Department works to provide help with course content (through tutors and monitored study hours) as well as with time management and study skills and any other academic support services that will allow Tech student-ath-

v Assistant Athletics Director for Academics and Student Welfare

Dr. Lance Jasitt serves as Assistant Athletics Director for Academics and Student Welfare. Dr. Jasitt plays a key role in the academic success of each of Tech’s varsity student-athletes, managers, and graduate assistants. His primary goals are to provide guidance and academic resources to permit student-athletes to maintain their academic eligibility under NCAA rules and to help them progress to graduation. In this process, Dr. Jasitt serves as a primary liaison between coaches and faculty. A detail-oriented person and a diligent worker, Dr. Jasitt has developed a solid understanding of the operations of the Athletics Department, the staff and the needs of its student-athletes. In addition to his administrative role within Athletics, Dr. Jasitt is also highly involved in promoting reading and literacy at all age levels. He was the 2008-09 president of the

TTU Council of the International Reading Association and has co-taught a graduate-level linguistics course for several years. He served on the President’s Commission on the Status of Women for seven years and has been a member of the President’s Commission on the Status of Blacks since 2014. Raised in York, Pa., he earned a bachelor’s degree from Penn State in 1978 and added a master’s in public administration from Valdosta State in 1987. In 1993, he received a master’s degree in education from Old Dominion University and added a Ph.D. in literacy education from Tennessee Tech in 2004. Dr. Jasitt is a former Commander in the U.S. Navy. His wife, Donna White Jasitt, is a former Captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve. They have two children, Ian and Meagan, who are both Tech alumni. Ian is now pursuing a master’s degree in Professional Sciences with a concentration in Environmental Informatics at Tennessee Tech. Meagan returned from an 11-month roundthe-world mission trip in 2014-15 and plans to study in Spain during 2015-16.

The WIN Program was implemented in the fall semester of 2004 to provide additional support for freshmen and student-athletes whose general academic progress places them at risk for maintaining eligibility and graduating. The program involves the student-athlete, coach(es), academic advisor, tutors, and others to build academic skills for success. Participation in the program is primarily based on grades, and coaches or the academic advisor may recommend additional participation at any time. All incoming freshmen meet at least one time per week with their coach to discuss academic progress and needs as well as time management and study skill techniques. Other aspects of the program include monitored study hours, tutoring, and study skills workshops.

He serves as assistant athletics director for sports information and broadcasting, starting at Tech on Sept. 8, 1982. He not only works to tell the stories of Tech’s studentathletes, he and his staff assist in the promotions and marketing for the entire athletics department. An active member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), he has attended the organization’s annual workshop in 33 of his 38 years in the profession. He has served on numerous CoSIDA committees, including Ethics, Academic All-America and Writing, and he currently serves on the Olympic Liaison Committee. In 2004, he was voted winner of the university’s Outstanding Professional Award, and in July 2005 was promoted to his current title. In September 2008 he was inducted into the Hall of Distinction at Minnesota State University (Mankato). Schabert has won dozens of national publications and writing awards, including “Best in the Nation” from USA Volleyball for his annual media guide six times. In addition to award-winning publications, he has kept pace with the fast-changing world of the sports information profession, moving Tech smoothly into the digital age and the exploding world of social media. Schabert, 59, has established several programs within the department. He created the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in 1987 and initiated the President’s Awards program in 1991. He also established

Schabert has promoted the selection of numerous Tech Academic All-Americans and is extremely active in promoting both the academic and athletic accomplishments of Tech’s student-athletes. Two other wings in his operation are the day-to-day production of the vast Tech athletics web site, TTUsports.com, as well as the farreaching, award-winning athletic video operations. Rob and his staff also serve as the hosts to all media attending athletics events on campus. Over the past several years, many of the interns who have worked for Schabert have moved into full-time positions in the Sports Information profession at a wide variety of colleges and universities, including Appalachian State, UAB, Xavier, Idaho, Texas State, New Mexico, Minnesota State (Mankato), Florida Atlantic and St. Leo’s. A Minnesota native who learned the trade under the guidance of his father, Bob (a long-time Minnesota Sportswriter), Rob earned his bachelor’s degree in mass communications from St. Cloud (Minn.) State University in 1977, spent one year in the Minnesota Twins public relations office, and was SID for five years at Mankato State University. He was a charter member of the St. Cloud chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, the Society of Professional Journalists. In 2002, Rob was a volunteer with the Salt Lake Olympic Committee as a member of the Press Operations staff.
