The Dodge Ram T-Rex 6x6 was unveiled for the 1997 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA). For those, like me, who have no idea what this means SEMA is a trade organization that deals with the $44.6 billion automotive aftermarket industry. It has a yearly showing at the Las Vegas Convention Center to introduce exciting new concepts in automotive specialty products. Dreamers and creators can highlight their innovative designs in individual pieces or complete trucks and cars. While it is not open to the general public, they do offer an after-party event when everyone is welcome to see the magnificent display of concept vehicles. The Dodge Ram T-Rex was built “just because” the guys wanted to. It was the first full size 6x6 off-road truck built for personal use. The idea was to present a truck that could “…outrun, out-tow, outmaneuver, out haul and out-off-road anything in its class, and do it with a lot more driver comfort,” according to Bob Lutz, Chryslers ex-president. With tandem mounted dual rear axles (4 wheels total) designed to function in constant 4-wheel drive, this off road great could become a 6x6 when the front axle was engaged. The T-Rex had V10 power with a 4-speed manual transmission and offered 497 horsepower. With all the bells and whistles, (did you get that it had 6 wheels?) Amazing go and tow power, luxury interior, and little thought to aerodynamics for fuel efficiency or sleek speed, they figured it would easily get about 7 mpg. Yep, that was seven miles per gallon. This is the beauty of concepts. One can dream big and plan for the future. Sadly, the Dodge Ram T-Rex never made it to the production floor.
