Melbourne hosts the Australian Open, one of the four most important tournaments in the world, held at Melbourne Park in January. Over 500,000 people attend the Australian Open each year.

Why is tennis played? Tennis is a sport for everyone. Some of the benefits of playing tennis include:

• Great for health, fun and fitness • Meeting people and starting new friendships • Participate in competitions and tournaments that are available for people of all ages and abilities

How to play tennis: Starting the point Tennis points begin with one player, hitting the ball over the net to the other player’s service court. This is called a serve. Playing the point Once a player serves the ball, the other player hits the ball back over the net. For the game to continue each player has to hit the ball over the net to the other player within the correct boundary of the court. A player will get a point if the other player does not return the ball correctly. Scoring The points system is as follows: 0, 15, 30, 40, game. If points are 40 – 40, players must win 2 points in a row to win the game. The first player to reach six games and be ahead by at least two games wins the set. The first player to win two sets wins the match.
